I'm always hearing people say that a buffer before a fuzz messes up the sound, but I honestly thought the fuzz tone *with* the buffer sounded better in both cases. It's like taking a blanket off the speaker
I thought he was running the buffer after the fuzz- not before it. I can run my Big Muff pretty much anywhere- it changes the tone but they're all usable tones. The Fuzz Face though- if I put anything in front of it- it becomes harsh, thin, and just generally horrible. I can run a buffer after it and it changes the tone, but it's usable- it just rolls off some of the highs. That said- MXR makes a Fuzz face with a buffer in it- it specifically designed to run with their Fuzz Face though. This allows you to put it anywhere like a Big Muff- the buffer in front of it fools it into thinking it's seeing the guitar.
so nice to see you back! Keep doing videos in whatever pace you like. My personal "trick" with an EQ pedal is that I use a midi controlled Boss EQ-200 with four different presets with a midi loop switcher. This makes my single channel amp, using just a booster and the EQ pedal, more flexible than most multi-drive pedal boards. I generally have a boost pedal "always on" for my main sound, and use the volume control to clean up a bit when needed. If I need crystal cleans, I use the EQ setting 1 with boosted highs and volume in the effects loop, using the loop switcher to also disable the otherwise always on boost. For more distorted rhythm, I use the setting 2 with scooped mids and more volume in front of the always on boost. For solos, I have a setting 3 mid boost in the effects loop with the always on boost. Finally. I have a a "lo fi" setting with cut lows and mids in the effects loop for when I want the bass player to cut through. I love my EQ-200! And my Friedman Buxom Betty Boost. That "tight" control just makes it so easy to set up a nice fat sound. It's the perfect pedal for any single channel amp user.
One of the greatest, and perhaps most overlooked distortion pedals is the old Akai G-Drive. It had two 6-band graphic EQ sections; one before the clipping section, and one after.
Holy crap- This is a great trick! I'm all about fuzz and have been playing for many years, I've never used an EQ for fuzz like this, but you've really got me looking at adding an EQ to my board again! Thanks so much!
I use the Orange pedal baby amp and get most my tone from my pedals. The pedal baby doesn't have much of an EQ and you just made me realize an EQ pedal is a must on my pedalboard now. Love the videos man!
welcome back!! i have a big muff wicker, and it was my first fuzz. i was upset when i got lost in the mix when i tried to play it with my band for the first time, but felt better when i learned that it was something normal to come across. i love videos like these that help me work around it. thank you!!
Love that tone wicker big muff! I use it on my pedal board with a musicom loop switcher with input buffer off, but output buffer on and still really happy with the way it sounds. Great video, cheers!
I’ve found putting an EQ at the end of the fx loop to very minimally cut some lower frequencies is like pulling a blanket off my amp. It opens it up so much more.
OK so would you say to always put the EQ at the very end, is that how it is usually done? I mean, it would seem to make sense to me, but I dont claim to know it all, always more to know, this pedal info stuff is endless!
@@michaelcraig9449 I would say there is no "always put it here or there answer". EQ before and after drive/distortion does different things depending on what frequency and whether you're cutting or boosting. In this following sound demo, you can clearly hear the difference between cutting or boosting mids, both before or after drive. Boosting the mids *before* an overdrive circuit (either pedals or in the amp) sounds much better than boosting mids after the drives (in the FX loop). Cutting mids, however, has a much less dramatic difference before or after drives.ruclips.net/video/FvsdKC_ULq4/видео.html
Thank you for teaching how to get the most use out of pedals. I learned about the buffer effect with an EQ early on, but never thought of using the volume by itself for a boost.
Just looking at your surroundings?....ALL THOSE PEDALS!?...and that Tweed/ creamy looking VOX?....I'd lock myself in there for DAYS!!!...AWESOME video dude!...you've got yourself a subscriber!!!
This is why I got the Billy Gibbons Siete Santos but I found I love to really exaggerate the eq and use a wah after. So gnarley! Like Pete Cosy with Howlin’ Wolf or the Stooges but more!
I think I prefer them buffered or/and EQ'ed. I like using an unbuffered compressor into my DIY Fuzzface clone. It spreads out the guitar volume roll-back sensitivity for better control, it reduces the mudiness and I can even cheat and boost the input volume. Gives an overall nice ballsier and better defined sound.
Ill be honest, I would have gladly given two thumbs up to this video. Once for the fuzz/eq portion, and an additional thumbs up for the baby goat. haha
Ditch the eq and swap it out for an OD1x pedal. Using bass cut or treble boost adds or cuts both ends of the spectrum amazingly. Didn't believe it until I heard it. Goes great with a Keely fuzz bender before the OD.
Great video! I'm always looking for ways to play with the color of my fuzz pedals. I like to sandwich mine between two different overdrives (TS->Fuzzes->Klon). The first OD boosts the fuzz, the second adjusts the mids for a thicker sound.
Cool video. I use a Ibanez GE-601 towards the end of my effects chain. I often use it after a fuzz pedal as you are doing except I cut more in the 400 Hz region than you did in this video. I also like to use a compressor pedal with a fuzz as the right amount of compression helps to make the fuzz more articulate. I usually use a dual channel Slide Rig in true bypass for this. My favorite fuzz is a Foxx Tone Machine, but I have recently been digging Fuzz Face type pedals. I also have had a long term affair with the Roland Bee Baa. I have never tried a dedicated buffer pedal as you are demonstrating. Will have to check out that arrangement more closely.
How do you like the Freqout? I've got one too, and I don't use it they way I thought I would. It's very fun. You can make some really crazy out there sounds with it, as opposed to just getting feedback!

I discovered layering a fuzz into an overdrive pedal yields some good results. (I'm a cheapass) I've tried both a Danelectro French Toast and some no-name silicone fuzz pedal into both a tubescreamer and a mosky silver horse (not at the same time), but with the OD pedals, turn the gain all the way down, level to unity, and adjust tone as needed. What this did to my ears is pretty much keep the fuzz gain characteristic, but injected a lot of mid range to have the EQ be closer to "amp-like." But, now you have me thinking I need to get an EQ pedal....
Good to see you back, and great tip. I stole a trick from David Gilmour, and will use an overdrive with the fuzz feeding into it. It sounds counter-intuitive, but it actually focuses the fuzz, and rolls off some of the fizz.
I run my new-ish Big Muff Op Amp (Sustain max, Tone 1o'c, Volume 1o'c ) into a Vox Over the Top Boost (Bass 11o'c, Treble 1o'c, Gain 9o'c or just before it get's too muddy) Into an AC30 normal channel. The OTTB pedal and AC30 both have a hi-cut filter which are used. This gets me the near disintegrating tone I want without the muddiness and excess fizziness.
Swollen pickle and a od2 in the front, boss gt3 multieffects in the loop. The EQ on it is great, the effects are generally more powerful (more controllable parameters) than their stompbox counterparts. I’m able to extract from it a very wide variety of vastly differing tones with blending effects.
I really like your videos, i appreciate the goodnes and modest attitude. I think in this video is missing "the mix" to illustrate what are you taking about.
MXR 108 has a buffer switch so with it on you can place it anywhere in the chain, its also actually brighter on that setting and cuts through more so that may be an option for some.

Unhappy mouth eq setting after fuzz to stand out more in the mix.
BooBoo cool! Definitely have the problem of the guitar disappearing with fuzz on when playing with a band.

But unhappy mouth makes me a sad fuzz face :(
Damn. That was _super_ useful. I've heard myself drop out of the mix when engaging the fuzz, but it never occurred to me to put an EQ after it.
Many have used a tone driver type pedal as well for the same boosting EQ effect. Like an Electro Harmonix Crayon, for example.
I use a frowning GE-7 before a Big Muff as a lead boost. Now you've twisted my arm into getting a second as a fuzz shaper. You're a bad man (THANKS!)
The thing for me IS to use bost anda a litle EQ before The fuzz anda a litle EQ after for shaping
Welcome back and hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

I like my TW Muff, but it's a bit noisy. I almost wonder if it's a problem with my specific pedal
That makes so much sense, I've got to experiment more with the pedals I use.... and the order.
Welcome back Sir,you’ve been missed.
Brian is great to see you back top tone tips merry Christmas
Just gonna say, this is a life saver for anyone who buys guitars with built in buffers, like the music man cutlass
