I'm not tryna fight you abt this but are you sure that's a kx? Cause I have a KDX 200 and it looks basicaly the same. Side plates and everything. And the gas tank looks basicaly the same. So i think that might be a kdx or just a kx with kdx plates and stuff. Dont ryll know
Everyone has there own opinion but I just wouldn't recommend riding down large hills engine braking a 2 stroke. Besides that, down shifting to a stops etc is fine and has never blown up a motor( I've over revved the shit out my 125 plenty times downshifting landing on jumps etc never blew up) Main thing with a 2 stroke is to let it warm properly before ripping it

You're right. Excessive coasting on a premix bike doesn't do it any favours simply because it's being used in a way it wasn't designed. But there's not much you can do aside from freewheeling everywhere. You just need to keep an eye on the top end.

First time out I was asking myself, "what the frick did you do?" I had no business riding this firebreather! Sold it two years later after knocking myself out on a tabletop. The power was hard to manage...but what a rush!
had a '93 version with CBR wheels on it, this bike doesn't like the grip on asfalt. But it does like to wheelie... Ones all 6 rear sprocket bolts just broke of during a ride. Being only 60kg at the time I had to balance the bike and stand on the kickstarter at it's highest point using full body weight, and then hope I didn't get a recoil onto my leg. 3,5 years on this bike I made some nice memories...
U can tell the bike don’t really like puting around on the street but it looks so fun I’d pay someone a 100 to let me rip one for a couple hours and the black stuff is most likely comin from expansion chamber those old bikes spit oil like crazy
Maybe, but probably the exhaust mounts, that I happen to me once and it was because there was a small gap, my shoes would get oil everytime I rode the bike
I can’t even begin to comprehend how fast that thing is. Like I’m 16 and 140 lbs so a 125 is perfect for me but I’ve ridden a 250 and it was fast af. And I’ve ridden a 450 and a Honda xl600 but I can’t even begin to imagine how fast that thing is.
You arent going to blow it up with engine braking as long as your jetting is good. Ive been riding, and engine braking, 2-strokes for 30 years and have never had any issue ever. Use good gas, good oil, and proper jetting, and you won't have issues either.
agree most of the time people ruin ther engine is the jetting is lean to start with in the serch for performance that only show on dyno. go with little on the fat side on jetting and let it be better for the engine.

As long as you mix the oil rich enough to maintain oil presence of a bit during engine braking, you're all good. Worse case scenario you just have slightly shortened ring lifespan. There isn't much side loading on the piston during engine braking.
Hey man that oil coming off may be from the exhaust mount, which happen to on a 2 stroke before. I have a question for anyone who can answer it. If he put a smaller sproket kit wouldnt it be fine on the streets? I think it would have a good powerful motor and a good topspeed. Besides its a badass bike. tsu yes, better sprockets would help a bit, but the characteristics of a two stroke motocross bikes do NOT like the streets. It’s either ON or OFF. Not much in between.
AMA racing killed 2 strokes to promote development of 4 strokes. I feel lucky to have scored a 96 KX500 Dirt Rider Magazine project bike. It's a beast. Had an CR500 for years, but sold to buy my kids kx125s.

Appreciate it! It def was not at its normal compression. Shortly after this i had to replace the crank seals. I was running lean. It was lower on compression for sure. I have a 1993 engine in it now. Decomp head and new crank bearings, seals, Wössner rod and piston, Boyesen RAD valve, Lectron carb, etc.

I agree. I have the 88 engine still, I just need to replace 4th gear and send the cylinder out to clean up the bore/new piston. I plan to get the 88 motor back in this summer.
It would be awesome to have a 2-stroke 500 cc bike on the road but i couldn't justify running a bike that does less mpg than my "2.0 litre petrol turbo car". I'd love to see someone stick a lighter to the exhaust of a 500cc 2-stroke to see what kind of flames you can get off the exhaust gases. I done it on a 125cc 2-stroke once, the exhaust gases were still flammable! I've got a 2001 Yamaha XT600E, which i took apart to paint the frame, can't wait to get it back on the road soon, i love big old thumpers.
highly suggest swapping to the kips version if your gonna do lots of street riding as the powervalve really smooths out the low end bucking idk if they did a 3stage kips for the 500 like my old kdx200 91 it was 4stroke smooth power and hard to keep the front wheel down from the low end tq. awsome bike though gld to see other people interested in older 2 strokes supermotos
Oh i agree with you! I ended up putting a 1993 KX500 engine in it. The later models had 3 valve exhaust. The KIPS definitely smooths it out. I had Tom Morgan Racing rebuild/balance the crank and bored/honed with Wössner connecting rod and piston. I also added a decompression valve to the 1993 engine. I actually sold this bike yesterday and I got more content coming soon with another vintage big bore 2 stroke.
