Holding a degree in respiratory therapy opens up a diverse array of career opportunities and specializations within the healthcare sector. Respiratory therapists play a vital role in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with respiratory and cardiopulmonary disorders, a need that has become increasingly significant, especially in light of the recent global health challenges. This quick video covers the role of respiratory therapists and what you can expect to do with a degree in this essential field.
    ➡️ Roles
One of the primary roles of a respiratory therapist is to work in hospitals, including critical care units, emergency rooms, and neonatal or pediatric units. In these settings, they are instrumental in managing life-support systems, administering oxygen, and aerosol-based medications, and performing chest physiotherapy to aid patients in breathing. Their expertise is also critical in managing ventilators for patients who are unable to breathe on their own. Beyond acute care settings, respiratory therapists may also find opportunities in long-term care facilities and rehabilitation centers.
This involves working with patients who require ongoing respiratory care, such as those recovering from severe respiratory illnesses or surgeries, and individuals with chronic conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. Their role includes developing and implementing rehabilitation programs to improve lung function and overall quality of life for these patients.
    ➡️ Scope of Practice
The scope of a respiratory therapy degree also extends to diagnostic services. Respiratory therapists conduct tests to measure lung capacity and analyze blood samples to determine gas exchange levels, contributing to the accurate diagnosis of respiratory conditions.
➡️ Pulmonary function testing, arterial blood gas analysis, and sleep study evaluations are some of the areas where their expertise is invaluable. In the realm of public health and education, respiratory therapists serve as educators and advocates for respiratory health. They may work in community health settings, providing education on smoking cessation, asthma management, and promoting overall lung health. They also play a role in training and educating other healthcare professionals, patients, and the public about respiratory health and disease prevention.
    ➡️ Research
For those interested in research and development, a degree in respiratory therapy can lead to opportunities in clinical research. This involves participating in or leading studies to develop new treatments, medications, and equipment to aid in respiratory care. With additional experience and education, respiratory therapists can progress into leadership and administrative roles. These positions involve overseeing respiratory departments, developing policies and procedures, and contributing to healthcare management and policy.

What can you do with an RT degree... You can keep people like myself alive. When I hit the ER I'm not looking for a doctor...I'm looking for the RT's. They are truly unsung heroes in my little world. People take breathing for granted... until they can't do it. I am but one person but I have a feeling that there are millions of others who appreciate the vital role you play in their care. I can only thank you from the bottom of my heart.
