The beast that is Jethro Tull on any given day do battle for me for Best Prog Band ever , and along with the likes of Genesis , YES , and Van Der Graaf Generator completey epitomise the genre.
Runner-up trilogy in my view is the incredible Pastoral trilogy.
Obviously ( I think ) winning trilogy should be Aqualung , TAAB , A Passion Play..... but let's not forget its evil twin. The Chateau Scooby doo album ( you know the one ). PHENOMENAL !!!
So id say the 8 albums ( which has to include Minstrel in the Gallery Tara !!! cos quite rightly it's OFF THE SCALE !! ) are absolutely essential albums and I envy anyone hearing any of these for the first time.
How about a Van Der Graaf Generator segmented series in the same vein as this Dermot.
    Great video guys. 🎵🎵😍

Although you excluded it from the first trilogy, I was glad to hear the kind words about This Was. It was a bit of a different animal, more like Fleetwood Mac or Chicken Shack, but when I feel the need for a Tull fix, This Was and Minstrel In The Gallery are my two go to's. Interesting look at the Tull discography guys! Cool idea and great show as always!

I find "Living in the Past" pretty indispensable, as it compiles all those great early singles and b-sides. Those tracks are just as vital as the album ones, IMO. Ian was so very prolific as a writer, his albums alone couldn't contain all the great songs he made.

An interesting walk through of the Tull discography. I well balanced assessment, and you didn't shy away from the lingering disappointment that set in during the early 80s. A case of continuing to make music when you have run out of new things to say; it can be good, but not interesting.
That would be an interesting theme for an episode, artists who never ran out of interesting things to say in their music.

Well Dermot and Tara. Brilliant analysis of one of my top 5 favourite artists! Agree with 98% of what ye said- up to 1982. Agree 100% with your analysis of post '82 Tull.
Interestingly enough- one of my other fav bands - Rush - were fantastic up to and including 1982's Signals album, after that they were hit and miss. Eighties keyboards ruined the band! I actually got into Tull in a slightly different way- I was in Five - O records in Waterford ( remember the one in Clonmel Dermot?) And it was the first time I've bought an album based purely on the cover. The only other time was De Dannan's Midt covered mountain. Anyway I then worked back to Songs from the Wood. So for me , the years 77 to 82 lps are special- love them! However once I discovered the rest of Tull- of course the earlier stuff is amazing ( war child and too old not so much!) Anyway- even though they made rubbish in the 80's, luckily they were great live up to the early 00's. Not Tull without Barre though! Worth noting Dermot and Tara, that a few gems exist during the latter years- 1988's 5lp box set is amazing! 1992's 'a little light music ' is brilliant. On a different note- all the Steven Wilson remix boxsets are absolutely brilliant! So good that to me they set the standard for how box sets should be done. Outstanding effort! Absolutely essential I think. Anyway I'm getting started, so I better call a halt! I'd say I enjoyed that video the best so really well done to the two of ye. Great stuff and as I said- must catch up! Take care now.

Thanks. That's a great comment. Your own insights are brilliant. Yes. I started some of my rock journey in Five O in Clonmel. That's where I discovered Renaissance and Uriah Heep. So, thanks to them for putting me on the right road. It would definitely be nice to catch up. If you're still in Waterford, I work around the city a lot. 👍

Ah no bother Dermot- I live just outside the town and I was thinking that yourself and Tara might be interested in coming down here one night to obviously meet ye, but to talk and play music for a couple of hours. I have a good few friends who are musicians and music fans, but most of them wouldn't be prog fans really. We do music nights on a regular basis both out here and in my friends studio, mainly in his studio because you can blast sounds to your hearts content! I can as well because I have no neighbours- but in August my wife heads to Melbourne so the house will reverberate with music! It would be nice to have a prog night! Also I mainly like the big prog bands and you two sure have a load of stuff to share . Mind you I've heard stuff like Can- even bought an album(tagore mago) and flogged it soon after- could not hear anything only a fuckin racket! But I'm open to hearing stuff- no bother. So if you're not getting sunburnt in Spain - sometime in the first 2 weeks of August, ye are most welcome! If ye're away - I have a room for music , so any evening really Dermot. Ok - talk to ye soon? Ondebawl!

If anyone needs an excuse to invest in a Surround audio system, Jethro Tull provides it! All of their classic albums sound fabulous in their deluxe digi-book reissues with included 5.1 Surround mixes by the inimitable Steven Wilson. Even the early albums (ahem) 'benefit' immensely from this treatment. I've been listening to Tull religiously since 1969, and still enjoy my vinyl copies, but my Surround versions are like hearing them with freshly astounded ears.

Couldn't agree more. Never really liked A until I heard Steven Wilsons remix. He took layers of grime from it and what a great album was hidden underneath. Especially the 5.1 and the live recording included it is powerful tight and heavy. The Benefit remastering and 5.1 also brings out amazing nuances that I hadn't heard before and made me seriously re-evaluate its brilliant songwriting. Surprisingly the only 5.1 in the collection so far that showed up it's weaknesses was broadsword. Which is an album I really like and the remastering is fine. The 5.1 just pulls the recording a bit apart and shows up the 80s recording more.
Do u not think under wraps was up there with the 80s musical masterworks like ABC,culture club, Kajagoogoo omd etc....... 😮 I recently got a Tull bootleg from the under wraps tour, London Fields I think, the band are on fire, really top notch. The numbers from UW benefit greatly with the live drums. But they're still pigs ears.

@@anthonydunphy819 Great insights there from the 5.1 remixes. I must avoid the Broadsword one, so. I think Under Wraps would like to be up there with the bands you mentioned. But those bands fitted the aesthetic they were trying to convey (80s schlock). With JT, the effect was jarring and starkly distasteful. I'm still reeling after it, about 40 years later. 😂🤣😂

    Hi Spinnin' Proggers👋🏻
Really can't disagree with anything you said there Dermot. When I saw them live a few weeks ago I really enjoyed the newer songs. Probably because Anderson's vocals were similar to the studio versions, but he struggles with the older stuff and it's sad to see how much he's lost his mojo😥
On a more positive note I went to see Nick Mason's Saucerfull Of Secrets on Wednesday. I won't mention any songs so it doesn't spoil the setlist for you guys. It was only the second date of the tour and they seemed a little under rehearsed at times. Guy Pratt frequently had to prompt and count Nick Mason into the next section of songs. Also, Guy Pratt didn't seem entirely happy a lot of the time. He seemed to be having effects pedal issues, sound level issues, issues with one of his bass guitars, and issues with flashlights from mobile phones being used to record video. That said, it was still a really enjoyable gig tho. I'm looking forward to hearing what you guys think of them.
If you'd said to teenage Terry back in 1979 that 45 years later he'd be going to a Jethro Tull gig, a Gary Numan gig, and another gig where some guy from Spandau Ballet would be playing Pink Floyd songs he'd never have believed you😵‍💫

I took a gamble on it because I had not heard of them before, and I almost didn't buy it because of the flute. I am glad I did as that remains one of my top 3 favorite albums of all time, along with the Beatles "White Album", and Genesis "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway." GREAT SHOW!!!

@@SpinninProg My #2, just behind "Benefit" is "Minstrel". IMHO, a highly underrated title in the Tull catalog!! However, I am a massive fan of "Stand Up", "Aqualung", "TAAB", "Passion Play" and beyond. I was not as thrilled with "Too Old" or "Heavy Horses" when they were first released, but they have grown on me over time. I do love "Songs From The Wood", but I don't rank it as highly as most Tull fans do; or at least the rankings I've seen online over time. A great album, to be sure, but not over Benefit, Minstrel, Stand Up, Aqualung, PP, TAAB, et al.

A gets a pass. I think there is some good songwriting... I do have a soft spot for Broadsword. It's not a logical thing... I don't know what it is. Some of the songs just resonate with me. @@SpinninProg I could not agree more! I even like "Under Wraps", which most folks 'poo-poo'. I think it just needs to be remixed. Yes, Tull are not at their best during their 'synth' phase, but still some very notable material therein. I, too, am not a fan of "War Child", and rarely listen to it. It took all the strength I could muster to order the deluxe box, as I want my Tull collection to remain as complete as possible. I enjoy "Broadsword" far more today, with the box, than I did when it first came out. Very fun video! I have long thought of Tull in terms of trilogies (it applies to Genesis too if you think about it, just more loosely in 1973-74 because it was so varied and you'd have to count a live album). Another point to consider here - if you look at some of the older songs on the 20-year and 25-year anniversary Tull box sets (Stormy Monday Blues, One For John Gee, Aeroplane, Sunshine Day,, "19", "To Be Sad..." ,etc), these would form a great album to set up a trilogy with L.i.t.P. and This Was. Those old songs were so good, in retrospect if the market had picked up Tull a bit sooner, all of those singles would have been on some album or other of the late 60s. One of the greatest psychedelic folk albums never released!

Ian made me buy a capo. He was a major inspiration for my style of acoustic playing. I've always loved his playing. Tunes like Mother Goose, Salamander, Brick, My God are a lot of fun to play.
Jethro Tull from This Was to Stormwatch are required listening. A to Rokflote has its moments for sure but the discography gets somewhat dicey. Very much like Yes' discography. From 90125 to Mirror are full of spectacular moments but still can't hold a candle to the 70s Yes. Tull was my wife's favourite band so I've been listening to a lot of Tull lately. Mention should also be made on what a fantastic job Steven has done on the remixes. Also the book/box sets are a great example of what I want out of a box set. I'm looking forward to Bursting Out coming up.
I have a feeling that Dermot doesn't like Under Wraps all that much. Hmmm...it's not that bad (but also not that good).
The Christmas Album is surprisingly quite good. As is the live album A Little Light Music. Check it out.

For me (and this is, I believe, what is colloquially called a 'hot take') the final album by Jethro Tull was Stormwatch. After this album, Mr Anderson broke up the band, in theory, but in practise returned with a completely new group (plus Martin Barre) and elected to call it Jethro Tull. This was a despicable manner in which to treat his other group members and really it displays the more unpleasant and egotistical side of the man's character...which is a pity because there are stories of his generosity and kindness to other bands during the 1980s and 1990s. It is a shame, therefore, he could not be as generous and kind to the other members of his own group who played on Stormwatch.
I do enjoy a few tracks on Catfish Rising and The Christmas Album but to my ears, almost everything from A onwards is boring middle of the road dad rock, the only exceptions being The Pine Marten from A and Kissing Willie from...whatever album it appeared on. However, this does not detract from your long and informative video which was a joy to watch, especially as it included a few facts previously not known to me. For what it is worth (probably not much) my favourite JT albums are This Was, War Child, Tales From The Wood and Stormwatch. If I have to select just 1 from out of those...er...sorry, but I can't!

    • @SpinninProg
      @SpinninProg  25 дней назад

Very valid comment. I tried to sugar coat the change in personnel after Stormwatch. But you're correct. It was a contemptuous situation that was morally reprehensible. I have heard it was due to the corporate overlords demanding a new Tull album instead of the solo album. This put Ian Anderson in a very sticky situation. I would have thought he could have held out... But we don't really know what the dynamic was and who was the organ grinder in this situation though. 🤔

I agree (mainly) with that chap from UNIT below (or above, wherever this appears) that Stormwatch was the final proper Tull album although there are a couple of decent tracks on A and Broadsword but Under Wraps...I can't give my opinion of that because I dislike the use of swear words but when I first heard that I realised it was possible to loathe and detest an album even more than Big Generator and Talk. Yes, the 1980s really was a truly terrible decade for classic progressive rock groups. I enjoy War Child but I find Minstrel really boring apart from the title track while Too Old To Rock & Roll is absolutely abysmal...I mean, all right, not quite as bad as Under Wraps (let's face it, nothing is as bad as Under Wraps, except perhaps an album by Taylor Swift or Lizzo) but still totally tedious. Nice cover, though! I always thought it a shame Tull stopped doing instrumentals after The Pine Marten Jig on A. Perhaps if they'd written a few more of those, Ian Anderson's vocal decline might have been deferred until a later date. Anyway, a lovely video.
PS I request a video on progressive rock singles that focus on bands (like Tull and The Family) who released really top quality tracks on singles and EPs that were never included on albums. I think of One For John Gee, Pan Dance, For Later, Wondering Again, Life Is A Long Song, Small Cigar and so on.
