What I'm more impressed with is that the guy who fell down knew exactly where to go from his stumble and made sure not to run into anyone, especially in drill that busy. As for why they ended up 4th, that was just an extremely competitive year at the top. I remember the top 5 being within 1 point of each other, and the band that did win (Lawrence Central) didn't win any caption awards and only won by .05 (still love that show, though). Any of the top 5 could've been the champion that night.
I love hearing the sound bounce back from the dome. Some bands will specifically design their music package to work well in a domed environment, and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy was designed with acoustics in mind due to the fact that they have so many marching competitions there.
Gotta love the crowd pleasing drill! For real! I will tell you, as a member of this band from 1999 to 2001, that regardless of the similarities, individually, it never got any easier to perform the drill and music everyone says are "the same". My Richland HS husband will make fun of these 3 shows I was in relentlessly...even 20 years later. They are very much not the same, but the use of the tri-tones and crowd pleasing drill tell an outsider a different story. I still get tears in my eyes thinking of all we accomplished as we marched off the field for each competition, though. Our late band director, Mr. Grzybowski had a vision of what he wanted to do, and he did it. I think of it as him polishing rocks, lol. The first few tumbles looked okay, weren't quite there...but this last one did it 😃. 4th place at this particular competition felt like a win to all of us 🥰
Hey can you ask your director how he got in contact with Mark Higginbotham? We played this my freshman year and tried using google to find him and hes nowhere to be found.
Bands are way, WAY better now from a musical standpoint and it's not even close. But shows definitely aren't as physically demanding anymore as they were in the early 2000s.
Texas bands march better now than they did back then because this was around the time that many of the best Texas bands started venturing out to compete against midwestern groups that could march better than they could, and so we had to learn how to march in order to compete with them. Pretty much any band that makes finals at Grand Nats nowadays marches better than LD Bell did in this 4th place run. Avon, Carmel, Broken Arrow and Tarpon Springs all have had to up their music game as well because they used to not be able to play better than the Texas groups....Now they can.
So does Mark Higginbotham even exist lol, my im in band played this show 3 years ago in 2012, so ive been wanting to get a mp3 of this show to add to my shows, but he doesnt even show up any where online.
I saw this in person 22 years ago. It was stunning. The perfect fusion of drum corps and marching band. Just amazing.
That closing drill though.

My favorite show of all-time

One of those moments I wish I could have seen live.
I swear its the same announcer ever year at grand nationals hahah this is a great show
The last couple minutes were so awesome that they decided to do them 2 years in a row.
Gotta love the crowd pleasing drill! For real!

1st place at BOA Arlington and San Antonio, and 4th at GN.
we are playing this for our show next year..

Wow awesome show, I can't see the formations really though lol, they are blending in with the ground.
Lovin' the 6 basses. 8'D ♥
This is my favorite band, hands down.
nice. :)
im SOOO pumped for this show! go saxes! ow!!
Go Tara! Flute soloist at 5:55
not watch the colorguard wtf? They are amazing and the costumes and work is very well done:) They rock!
They beat us at state, we got third, but I always really admired this music. Kinda wish they had beaten Duncanville for first. This music sticks
Sara Autry is why this band was magical.
One word: DANG!
i think bands were better back then

8024hawk Depends on where you look. Indiana bands for instance haven’t quite caught up to older Texas bands in general
@@KlldbyCuriosity This band literally lost to an Indiana band THEN.
Jacob Wilkins From a visual and GE standpoint yes, from a musical standpoint not as much

Met the man himself. I was a trumpeter in Miracle and Finale. (1999)
The last minute in a half was intense lol
about 2:45 mins into this show is similar to the beginning part of their 08 show: "The Quest"
What music are they playing???
schermberm is that you??
its nicky! :D
Luckily it's not domed anymore....When my district does performance there they open the roof :)
That had nothing to do with why they got 4th. In my opinion their score should have been boosted because they made such an awesome recovery.

i think i see a "random cavies visual" in there...
LD Bell did it first, actually ;)
I'm sure the show was no less than awesome. I just wish I could hear more winds. Too much percussion!
Still liked it though.
watch ld bell 98, 99, 00 they are all the same music with the "same" ending
I thought this was amazing.
@missahsee RCA dome is notorious for reverb....its a horrible place to perform...
