How does a Watch Winder Work?
If you own a luxury watch, chances are, you’re interested in learning how to best care for it. Many brands, such as Rolex and Omega, require a serious investment, after all. It makes sense that one would want to protect their asset. One way to ensure that your watch is in perfect working order is to store it properly, and watch winders are a popular option for anyone who owns an automatic mechanical watch.
The purpose of a watch winder is to keep your timepiece wound when you aren’t wearing it. Automatic watches are powered by the motion of the wearer’s wrist. As they go about their day and move their arm, the watch will keep itself wound. Watch winders are an excellent alternative if you don’t plan to wear your watch often and don’t want to deplete the movement’s power reserve.
Depending on the type, the winder will rotate the watch in either one or multiple directions. This gentle movement keeps the watch wound.
Do I Need a Watch Winder?
Whether you need a watch winder or not depends on both the watch and your personal preference. If you have a large collection of automatic watches, then a watch winder will save you the bother of having to reset your watch every time you want to wear it. This is particularly useful if your watch includes multiple functions, such as a day and date mechanism. In that case, it’s worth the price of a winder to be able to put your watch on your wrist and go.
If you only own one watch, you probably won’t benefit much from a winder at all, especially if you wear your timepiece often. You might even find that adjusting the date each time you strap your timepiece on your wrist isn’t that much of an inconvenience. In that case, it might be worth it to skip the winder altogether.
Keeping your movement running in perpetuity has its pros and cons as well. To start, wearing a watch often or keeping it in a winder keeps the lubricants within the movement circulating. By keeping these oils from dying out and coagulating, the movement remains in excellent working order. On the other hand, if you properly service your watch, the break-down of the lubricants and oils is no longer a factor because they will be replaced regularly.
Keeping your watch constantly wound also adds a level of wear and tear to its parts, even if it is only an insignificant amount. If the winder is set correctly, the movement will only be wound as much as is needed for that watch.
How do I set my Watch Winder?
That brings us to the important question, how do I set up my watch winder? Depending on the brand, and even model, there are a few factors to consider. It also depends on the watch winder itself as some options don’t offer as many settings as more expensive models.
A popular option included with every winder is the rotation setting. Do you want the winder to rotate your watch clockwise, counterclockwise, or bi-directionally?
Another factor to consider is turns per day to keep the watch fully wound - aka TPD. A standard setting is anywhere from 600 to 800 turns. However, some brands require as many turns per day as 800 to 850. It’s best to do your research beforehand to make sure you choose the best setting for your watch.
How much does a watch winder cost?
A watch winder will set you back anywhere from just $50 to as much as several thousand dollars, depending on the winder itself. Some basic models can accommodate a single watch and include simple settings. In comparison, there are also more expensive winders on the market that can hold multiple watches and offer advanced settings.
It isn’t necessary to buy the most expensive option on the market to keep your collection wound and ready to go at all times. It ultimately comes down to choosing a watch winder with a silent and reliable motor that can accommodate the number of watches you own and the settings needed for your collection. A sensible watch winder should only set you back, at the most, a few hundred dollars.

I just purchased an Orient Bambino version 3 watch and a watch winder. What selection mode do you suggest I set the winder for my watch? I'm new to the automatic watch life 😁 Thank you.

    Hi
I have a large Invicta automatic and a large band 9”.
I got a Triple Three winder and I can’t close the lid when winding.
I wonder if you can suggest a winder that would work for this large band large watch? I am part disable and I don’t get enough usage to keep it going.
    Thank you

If you're into accuracy, you'll be adjusting the time of your non-daily mechanical watches regularly, perhaps every time you select one for wear, so even keeping them on a winder won't suit you. I have a winder for each watch that does not have a manual wind function, which total just two. I have no mechanical watches with complications beyond day/date or GMT, and I have no mechanical watches that lack quick set day/date functions. So really, that I have winders at all is more a convenience than a need.

My skagen watch didn’t work and I really thought it’s because I didn’t have watch winder and I didn’t use it for a long time. It turns out I just need the battery to be replaced. 😅

😱 I've been grinding away for three weeks now pouring over watch winders and trying to decide my budget and how many slots I need. I currently have 10 automatic watches. I think a middle or the road winder would be fine but just how many slots will be tough decision. Does Bob's sell winders would a call to you be helpful.

£75 on amazon... 2 double winders, 6 extra slots at the bottom and 4 winder settings. I got mine for £25 as I had a gift card 👍🏻

@@dkMAVERICK416 wow my comment was way more than 6 months ago but thank. I finally pulled the trigger on an eight watch programmable winder on Amazon. The name doesn't matter it's a Chinese unit and variants of it are all over Amazon. The price was right and so far it's working great. But it is mechanical and is running all the time so at some point it will have issues and probably isn't repairable.

who needs a watch winder.... no one besides perhaps a watchmaker to test functionality after service. Otherwise it'll just ware down pivots and slowly turn all the lubrication in the going barrel into an abrasive. Winders are a great way to fill a watch with metal dust. If you don't wear a watch everyday just wind it up once a month and let it run down. This exactly how you should run your classic car once a week to move oil around or turn your bottles of wine monthly to keep the corks from drying out. And if you don't like setting the time on your auto, then maybe try an apple watch or quartz.

I agree that like any machine, running it constantly will cause more wear and tear, however with modern movements (especially co-axials which require less oil and less maintenance), most will be fine running 24/7 for 5 years before needing service. They’ve done a great job minimizing friction over the years. Theres many tried and true workhorse movements out there that can run like a 300k mile Toyota. Of course if you have an antique or non co-axial, you’ll want to run it less and service it more.

The whole "oils drying out and migrating" thing sounds dubious to me. Makes more sense that constantly keeping them wound would do more damage in terms of wear than letting them sit. Ultimately, the winders simply serve as a convenience more than anything. I'm looking at Grand Seiko's FAQ and it states "If your watch has a mechanical movement, try not to leave the watch unworn for too long. Your Grand Seiko watch performs best when worn for at least 10 hours a day." That pretty much sounds like marketing gobbledygook to get you to buy a winder if you're buying at a boutique. Like, I seriously doubt they've done any lifetime testing to determine that the watch being worn 10 hours a day is what is best for it.
