It's all about repressed sexuality.......one of the nuns literally goes insane with repressed sexual desire. You have to watch this masterpiece quite a few times before you can truly understand it.

C Shizzle : "The nuns in this movie seem to behave like black boxes and I just can't comprehend why they are saying what they say and why they are doing what they do".
That is because they are living in a place that is totally out of their element: intensely isolated, harsh climate, cultural clash, hostile native, and in the case of sister Clodagh and sister Ruth, their ego-battle. If you have ever tried to live in a foreign country alone where you don't speak the local language, maybe you can comprehend what kind of psychological effect it could have on your psyche.

@@cshizzle7223 it is a great movie and perhaps it does not exist simply for you to understand it or to relate to it.er,,many 40s or 50s movies will have stilted dialogue.casablanca cannot be compared as they are too different

This and "The Small Back Room" are my favourite of Powell/Pressburger's. People go on about "The Red Shoes" but it doesn't do it as much for me.

It's a wonderful wonderful film - a cornucopia of delight. What geniuses Powell and Pressburger were, what masters of the art of cinema, what illustrators of our lives - not just then but now and for evermore.
Their message is as valid and alive now as in former years.

I just started watching it (the 2020 one). Is it good? Is it a remake of the movie or is it something else?
*Edited- Was pretty good... then again, I haven't seen the original so maybe after I see it and compare them, I'll change my mind? Who knows! I do admit tho that when I first saw the previews it looked like a horror miniseries and was a little bit bummed out when I realize it wasn't. I was expecting a "The Nun" kinda story with demon possessions and all. 😂

I finally saw it last night all 4 hrs! Slow burn 🔥 No crazy sex nuns (despite hot Gemma Atherton in charge) no pillow fights or even much of a steamy hook up with the charming Mr Fix it guy. He sent Sister Ruth packing and she couldn’t stand it ! I was kinda hoping Sally Field could fly in and save her soul. I’ll have to see ‘47 version to compare the eroticism.

I watched this on TMC last night and I have to say, it's beautifully shot! How the colors pop on screen, and how they made it look like it was made on locations. Also the climax was pretty nail-bitting. I'm glad I saw it.

This is much more than a simple "sex movie", it's more like an acid trip. Powell makes the viewer experience the thoughts and emotions of the characters by the words and actions he uses in a very covert and subtle way. You experience sex and sexuality but to call it a "sex movie" really is belittling it's unique power.

A display of the narcissus attitude of a nun being shown her way to God and his love through kindness and LOVE for all human kind. They called it black narcissus because of the smell but the story and plot has twist and turns that are allow us to reach far beyond and discover the LOVE of God.

This is by far a better version although Sabu is the most laughable casting . The whole thing has the necessary air of unreality and the scenes involving the past in Ireland and the kitschy Christmas celebration are very strong in their depiction. You cannot surpass this bottom of the garden India and exaggerated habits although Runer Godden is said to have disliked the adaptation.

@WalterLiddy No, there is nothing simple about this film; the narrative and its characters is a very rich and broad tapestry.
But when asked what kind of movie this is, I simply say "It's A Sex Movie" which is precisely what it is.

One of the more breathtaking movie I saw lately.
Favourite scene : the "potato terrace" scene.
Favourite quote : "I give you to the rain season"
Oddity : the black narcissus (Sabu) has next to nothing to do with the story, apart from the sisters' comments in the kitchen about his way of dressing. Btw, on the other hand, David Farrar's wardrobe choice is spot on.
Who is the actor playing the holy man character? He doesnt seem to get any credit anywhere. Was he even an actor?
