    As a Catholic I was super impressed with the show. The Catholic portions were so on point that I felt like I had been to mass after episodes. They even got the Act of Contrition for the priest correct. It has changed over generations and he said the one that was appropriate for his age.

      @jacquelinecallejas1390 Год назад +24

      I am not an atheist but I think if you are going to write an atheist character you should do it right and in MOST movies I've seen they have the "atheist" "hate" God and usually for a BS reason like "God" let my wife die. An atheist can't "hate" God because he doesn't believe one exists. So it is unfair to portray atheists like that. There must be very good reasons to be an atheist so write some into the character. BTW I ALSO think if you are going to write a character as a Christian you shouldn't go the other way where EVERY Chistian is a right wing nut hypocrit looney. I liked that this show showed evil as well as good Christians.

      Yeah we usually either get the “lost soul who has been hurt but will find faith again” or “insufferable know-it-all who is just SOOOOO much smarter than religious people.”
      Riley was just a human. His journey to rejecting religion made perfect sense. But he wasn’t a jerk about it. And his line to Erin, “I hope you’re right,” after she described heaven was so sweet.
      For most of us, the idea of getting to find everything lost in life and live in peace sounds great. We’d be delighted to find out it’s true.
      We just don’t believe it. But it’s not ok to take that away from others and Riley doesn’t do that.

    • @kayla8402
      @kayla8402 Год назад +1

      Yup. Ultimately that's part of what it nailed is that, being a decent person, being empathetic and paying attention to people as people, is universal, irrespective of religion or lack thereof. Religious belief can help promote that, can help frame it in a supportive way, but then you have to watch out for the hypocrisy, power seeking, etc that shows up.

    Personal take, idk is this on purpose or just coincidence with the plot not but I personally love how they choose Fajr prayer as their last prayer.
    Knowing their condition (Hassan's bleeding and Ali's not in good shape) by default we can choose to combine our prayer to the next prayer (Jama') if we can't find anything to clean it or if we're in heavy pain like Hassan's case we can even shortened it (Qasr), but Fajr prayer is different and the only prayer that we can't combine or shortened it, for me it kinda gave even more meaning to their last prayer.

    I might have misinterpreted this, so will go back and give a second watch.
    But one of the things I did like about Hasan was that he was three dimensional, and they weren't afraid of showing that actually, despite what he said, he DID have some issues with his son potentially converting to Christianity - and was struggling to balance this with being open minded.
    I think that's believable, and human, and far more interesting than making him perfect.

      @siyumkhan578 Год назад +10

      @susivarga7303 basically there are two perspectives here. One school of thought is that you just pray in a straight line on the map to Makkah.
      The other school of thought says that you should pray in the shortest path to Makkah. The shortest path to Makkah in the northern hemisphere is Northeast because the earth isn't a perfect sphere. Basically if you were to take a string and measure on the globe from any point to another, usually, the shortest path won't be in a flat line but rather an arc that goes more north/south than expected. I may have explained this horribly so you should look up the term geodesic if you are still confused.

      Muslims do believe in miracles but when we say miracles we are talking about the miracles of the Prophets peace on them all. So like how Moses pbuh parted the red sea, the seven plagues, how Jesus pbuh made a bird from clay and it came alive, how Jonah pbuh survived in the belly of a whale. All the Prophets came with a message and miracles. The Prophet Muhammad pbuh was given the Quran and we consider that to be the message and also a miracle. Of course stuff can happen that is unexplainable and wondrous and a Muslim would attribute that to God. Don't know if they are necessarily called miracles though.

    I was raised Muslim in an Arab country for all my life but lost my faith as time progressed, it just wasn't for me. But I still *know* for a fact that representation is important, and how to call out BS representation from actually good representation, and the difference between 'liberation' and islamophobia, etc. So this show genuinely brought a smile to my face. There's a lot of good memories of being Muslim, like going to Umrah and eating honeyed mortadella and olive oil and bread on Friday and waking up at 5 AM to pray with my dad, setting up chairs everywhere for people to sit down, and running between the mountain tops at the green lights, and all the little things in life that shaped my identity that are so tied with the religion I was raised with, and seeing it be represented makes my heart flutter, and genuinely brings a smile to my face. Because I'm sure there are other Muslim kids and adolescents and adults alike who kept their faith and are still experiencing those things, and discrimination for it, so this just... makes me happy, y'know? That they get the representation the young and believing me never did get, and even if I'm not Muslim now, nor will ever be, it doesn't mean that part of my life, my childhood, was any less for being so, and representation still affects me the same it does my childhood friends who clung on to belief and Islam.
    Thank you for this video, it brought back a lot of really nice memories for me.

I am especailly really impressed with the scene in the classroom where Hassan tried to explain to them that Islam also believes in Jesus Christ but we just call him Prophet Isa PBUH instead. It's just that we believe the bible has been greatly altered.
    In my experience, a lot of non-muslims and westerners genuinely have NO clue that we acknowledge Jesus, and a lot of them kept getting surprised at how so similar Islam is with Christianity. At times it reached a point where I find their surprise bewildering, since I thought to myself that SURELY the fact that Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all abrahamic religions shouldn't make you THAT surprised? So yeah, I'm glad they included that wonderfully written scene.

    Thank you for your analysis! I'm super invested in this show because I was already a Flana-fan but apparently he made this show based on decades of pondering these things as a former Catholic who's now an atheist. And I was raised Catholic, I also went to Catholic school! They made us go to mass 1/month, 1/week during lent. And I am naturally an atheist--i spent decades pondering or obsessing over the topics Midnight Mass expostulates on.
    Obviously I related to Riley. I went thru the sitting out communion thing for years. Your parents are hurt and confused and worried, the rest of the community is doing a micro-judgement when their eyes linger on you.
    I loved the discussions and ideas in the show. But I LOVE that it didn't falsely pick any belief system as 'the obvious good guy.' it's a Catholic island so naturally there are catholic villains (Bev..=POISON) but it's not saying Catholics are fools or bad people. It does 👀 @ Catholicism's cannibalism aesthetic but you know what i think sometimes constructive feedback is appropriate...
    It wasn't about 'fixing' Hassan or Riley or Riley's parents or Erin, Mildred, Sarah, etc. it accepted everyone who is genuine and compassionate as valid. And people obviously makes mistakes. Riley, Joe, Father Paul. I think it exploded forgiveness in a very human and understanding way 💜

    I was watching reviews about midnight mass and i have seen your your video about the tv series and muslim representation. fist of all i would like to thank you about your video, because i think lots of people doesn't even know what a 'normal' muslim is! because mostly they are watching some cheesy or radical character on tv! so its good to say to people ' look guys, this is a good representation'
    Even though I'm deist now, i have been raised in muslim family, in turkiye, I prayed too many times and I practice namaz at certain period of my life, and i'm living in london now. and i have never seen a proper muslim representation in tv series, let alone in a horror tv series!
    Before i start i agree with you about muslim representation in movies and tv series, it feels like they (western media) simply don't care how they are doing it. and it's really shame to see this poor representation about muslims.
    I really like hassan's character and how he wasn't radical islamist. I'm serious! most of the time when we see a muslim character' they are somehow radical characters. they get offended easily by any mistake to them or their religion and take it super seriously and act like stupid! hassan was really cool on everything. even though when the others kind of insulting him and his religion but in a nice way(!) he was keeping it cool! especially in the class when he was talking about his concerns about bev and her missionist behaviors' like giving them bible at school. and whomever write his monolog in that classroom about how islam sees jesus and christians, i would like to give them an oscar or something! yes! finally in somewhere they got it right! muslims are also believes jesus, christians, but they also believe there is something more after jesus which is true religion, islam! that's exactly what they believe and that's exactly what they thought me in the elementary school! it has been 2 years i have watched the show, and i'm 35 years old, midnight mass still has one and only muslim representation who said this part and got it right! and btw hassan's life might be one of the proper muslim presentation on tv about how the christian world sees muslim in real life, in professional life and in religion life.
    about the pic. in the house, i just would like to say, even though me and my family knew its not good to keep pics in the house, we always had some family pics on the walls. especially in the living room. but whenever my mom practice namaz in the room, she was covering them with some cloth or she was choosing other room if there isn't any pics in it.
    in the final scene, the fact that he died while he was praying made me say, just like you said, wow it's a straight ticket to heaven! My mom was saying this so yes, lots of people believe that! Moreover i also thought (even though I am not a muslim, as I said before) what an honor it was for him, his head was in prostration while he was praying. I'm not sure if the show did this on purpose, but if they did on purpose, I want to congratulate the person who did this research and found it!
    btw, the tv series did a really good job about muslim representation but what i understand from other reviews they did also a good job atheist and christian community representation in the show. i can say that muslim representation could be the hardest part to make it right, but atheist and christian community parts are also hard to catch it right i think.
    anyway, thanks again for your video!

    Excellent video, loved to hear your perspective as a Muslim. Hassan was my favorite character of the show, the only one who seamed to have common sense; perhaps because he was an "outsider" in that community, it allowed him to be more critical, which I liked about him.

I do not know how but the fact that the priest was able to avoid back of the class behavior from taking place was impressive now that I think back to it.

    I was raised, and still am, Catholic and I loved the show. Many other commenters/reviewers have reiterated my same feelings about how accurate the show is to Catholic Mass so much so that it felt kind of warm and familiar in a way. I didn’t feel the show was attacking Catholicism - or any religion - but more depicting the dangers of misuse of religious text and manipulation of others with misuse of religious text, which essentially goes against the main point of the text. Eg. Bev knows verses by heart but doesn’t live in a way that shows love and understanding like Jesus preached, whereas Riley’s mum is devout and demonstrates this by being loving and kind. I feel like this kind of thing can be probably translated to any religion or ideology. An interesting note about Hassan is that Ali says at one point something along the lines is that Hassan only ‘became’ or converted or starting practicing as a Muslim for Ali’s mother, which might indicate some things that have slipped, like the picture for example, and also I feel informs how painful it would be to see Ali in a way turn towards Christianity and away from Islam as perhaps Hassan may feel he has failed his wife or Ali is turning his back on her or her legacy - not intentionally but how Hassan sees it or feels. If that makes sense. May be wrong of course but just some observations I had

    My favorite part at the end, when they are all on the beach and the Muslim father and son were praying, the father died moments before the son did, and I thought how that was subtly brilliant in showing an example of the mercy of the Creator. The father did not have to see his son burst into flames. It really moved me, especially if that was intentional. It was a well-thought-out detail.

Shows how deep the writing went with tying a lot of the show back to religious faith.

    I always see MM as a question of faith and less religious. Is how a person needs to know what its good and not, or what is right or not, despite what is been told. Like Bev. Bev considered herself the true believer and confronting with with Angel/Demon, she never question! She just accepts as right thing to do. Even when what they where doing was wrong. Bev just didnt question! People with blind faith are dangerous. For me this is what the show is about. It doesnt matter what is your believe, as long you can question if is right or not to do, to behave, to live in such way. It doesnt matter if you follow a holly book, word by word. It matters if it comes from your heart and knowing to not do the wrong things, even if someone tells you, it comes from God.

    He was done quite well in my opinion, Like I was bothered about the picture thing too but TBH many poople put pictures and stuff in their homes, we even have albums kept in this huge box somewhere.
    I felt he was a brilliant depiction of a 'normal, average' Muslim u know?
    He's seen praying with his son and over all a non-judgemental kindhearted man but still his son, seeing all the miracles, gets doubts in his head. I can imagine the kind of upbringing he may have given Ali.
    The prayers were absolutely wonderful too, like oh wow that's so accurate!
    He even says Astaghfirullah 3 times at the end! SO DO I!
    The only tiny issues I had was
    'Assalamualykum' instead of saying the whole phrase.
    And at the end when he dies in Salah with Ali and the sun is nearly out.
    Me: You aren't supposed to perform namaz at this time, it's already light!
    Me: Well you are almost dying so, guess it's okay, and it makes for a beautiful moment.

    Muslim here. To represent muslims in a positive light is comendable, but representing them positively while christian catholics are so to speak " the horror movie characters" comes to the same in its essence. It is one thing to represent us in negative/positive light in an ethnic, cultural sense, as humans we have ours flows... What is disturbing is the distortion of those who have faith in G... in general, no matter which. That is not fixed by drawing a "nice" muslim character(imperfect, just like any average joe), but actually enhanced by mirroring the good guys vs the bad ones, just inversed. We haven't moved the needle here, rather sunck a bit deeper. Sorry to say.
    Ramadan is right next door. May there be more faith.

    I love horror, especially psychological and tragedy disguised as horror. Midnight mass did this really well. I think what made it so spooky/eerie was how well done Hasan's character was. It's rare to see a muslim character, let alone a well-done muslim character in the horror genre. So as a Muslim, you're always a bit removed from the story and atmosphere. It's not your world. BUT in this series, with Hasan there, I felt like the world was my world and I was stuck there with him. That protective wall of "oh i couldn't imagine myself in that situation" was gone.

    The only thing that struck me as a major plothole was that Ali was allowed to partake in the Communion.
    This would NEVER happen in real life. Non catholics are simply not allowed to partake in Communion. It's goes against the sanctity of the sacrament and they make really some ridiculous amounts of fuss about it.
    So if they are not letting non catholic Christians partake in Communion, chances of a Muslim being allowed to are even lower.
    So Flanagan could have avoided this by writing a scene and turning it into a discussion between Bev and Pruitt. She being thoroughly against it and him being all about letting everyone willing to partake in his "miracle" join in.

    • @Goomyx1492
      @Goomyx1492 2 года назад +4

      Alternatively, I could also see Bev pushing for it because she might see Ali participating in Communion as essentially converting him and pulling him away from another faith. Even though it's not something that would be allowed in the Catholic faith, I think we can agree that she and Paul both did MANY things that wouldn't be allowed in the Catholic faith, yes?
