Thanks for this video, it was very useful. I left my normal road tires on my touring bike (38mm on a Mongoose Randonneur) and hauled my trailer over the full length (end of May 2020). Suspension is for the soft... :) Definitely needs 2 days to fully appreciate it! I was getting a little jaded at the end... Oh look, another beautiful suspension bridge... The big tree you had to squeeze under has been chopped apart so you can ride through and the mud near the start has been freshly gravelled over! We had no frost, but the temp was 4.5 degrees going over the summit! I'm going to go back in the summer and do a couple of loops from Piropiro!
Me & some friends riverboarded from the north island to the south island of New Zealand 10 yrs ago. Your NZ videos are bringing back lots of memories. Makes me wanna go back & bike it now! 🚵♀️👍🏼
Mike Skor New Zealand is so gorgeous it is worth the painful feet! We have purchased socks and shoes to make the journey easier! The trails they have created in NZ are really nice! And already planning our return trips!
The bridges! 😱 The frost! 😱 My name at the end if one of your videos! 😁 Awesomely awesomeness! You two make my day with each and every video. When I have a crummy day all I need to do is watch, or re-watch, your videos and it makes everything better and always makes me smile 😊 Keep up the great work!👍
Vivian Frerichs Thanks for all your support! That’s the least we could do! Maybe a cameo in the future too?? And yes the bridges were quite scary especially since they bounce around when you go over them! 😝😝
Bought my self a brand new kona sutra 2023. I'd like to tour one day with my bike ,just dont know where yet. The fact that i m 58 too makes me think im too old for this.
Ryan very impressive with only 2 gears, you guys must be very fit riding touring bikes over trails. Hoping your days get warmer so your toes don't suffer.
I can't handle the cold well enough to enjoy riding in it. I'll ride all day and night if it's say 75F up to 110F. I live in Az US. Above 110F only in early mornings. You guys are tougher than I am certai nly! THANKS!
@@radbikeadventure Yes indeed! That'll be warm. I grew up in 4 seasons weather. Used to ice fish. (Neurological disorder!) Lots of sunscreen, please. I've learned the hard way. Love you guys and the way you approach life. Always impatient for you next video. Cheers!
Wow, thanks for your hard work in sharing your adventures. Hope you can get the derailleur fixed soon and maybe some sort of over the shoes (like galoshes) covers to keep your tootsies warm and dry. All the best.
Andy DerksMKKT953DI Yes more to come in the next vids re the derailleur issues. Thankfully we found out about gortex style socks that work wonders. And shoes helped too 😆 We just didn’t think it’d be so cold on the N. island!
Ahhhh yes, next time we definitely will. Lots more to explore in NZ in future trips. Since I lived there a "few" years back, I have a special connection to the place so rest assured we'll be back!
Teckin We found it to be hard to find spots off the road in the north island since much of the open land is being used for grazing sheep. But on the nz trails there are plenty of spots. And many of the trails have free camp sites. On the South Island. It is much easier to wild camp as there’s less people and more wild areas. I would try to do as many of the nz trails as the roads can be quite crowded in certain areas and during peak season. I would travel to nz in the shoulder months.
@@radbikeadventure here in NZ you can pretty much camp anywhere even if you find yourself surrounded by farmland just ask someone and be respectful with cleaning up your campsite.
Cool. You should ride the Old Ghost Road. You might need to hire mountain bikes but it is a great trail to ride. Quite sketchy and technical in places. Check it out on other YT channels.
Alex Morgan Ahhh I know we really wanted to ride that but alas we are saving it for next time! We’ll have a better set up and can also tackle Mountains to Sea and Alps to Ocean 🚵🏼♀️
@@radbikeadventure Thanks for your reply. Shoulder???? I am hoping to be in NZ in early 2020 before it gets too cold. Not sure just yet I my bike set up whether full suspension, front only hard tail or solid frame MTB. Will be trying a bike packing set up as I think quite a few sections of the Ghost Trail would be very difficult to negotiate with big panniers as the sections are narrow, technical and high up! I am considering my Surly Troll with 26" wheels as I can have thinner tyres 1.75 inch for most of the roads and smooth gravel and 3 inch tyres for more demanding trails like the Ghost Trail. This is the max tyre width the frame allows. Then change back after. Sounds a faff but could be worth it. Or alternatively I go with my KONA, yes KONA Kula Hard tail with front suspension with 2.6 inch tyres which is also a strong possibility. Either way you need a rugged bike for the Ghost Trail. Maybe it's just better to hire a bike for a month but I would feel more comfortable on one of my own bikes. It's a pity your road bikes aren't suitable as it is by all counts a fantastic trail with stunning scenery and I'm sure you would have loved the challenge. Maybe next time for you. You'll have to go back. So many places you have visited you are going to have to re-visit.
Jimmy Johnstone Ya it said for two people. It was a bigger meal. Definitely better than we thought it would be. It seems more expensive but for those that don’t want to chop or prepare than it’s a good option. We were still snackish afterwards (like always) and ended the night with chocolate.
@@radbikeadventure I buy the 2 person meal for just me when sea kayak camping. I am always too hungry after a day paddling to have just one portion. Chocolate is always in my food bag too. Sea kayaks can carry a good load of kit, similar to your loaded bikes, so there is never a problem taking sufficient supplies for 5 to 7 days. In Scotland there is plenty water to filter in most places, but I can also carry several litres in bags. Your trip in NZ looks very similar to some NW Scotland areas. Different vegetation but similar trails.
@@jimmyjohnstone5878 I could definitely see having the 2 person meal all to yourself. We snack a LOT and always have bread, peanut butter and cookies on hand for the late night hunger attack lol. Kayak camping sounds pretty sick...and Scotland is gorgeous. We keep talking about going to the UK ( did my first cycle tour there and went around Isle of Skye)
@@radbikeadventure Scotland is perfect for sea kayaking, and doing trips with camping kit makes it even more special as places can be reached which are not accessible by car or bike. Remote beaches, small islands, sea lochs surrounded by mountains. We are lucky to have it all to explore. Hopefully you will get here soon. Get in touch if you do, for tips on locations and for a place to sleep if in my area.
Thanks Rob. Actually found it totally fine. Tried to avoid main roads when we could and perhaps because it was winter there weren't a lot of cars on the road.
Thanks for the video. I used to show my wife, a non-rider, what its like on some of the trails I ride.

Can you still get the possum fur accessories? They should keep chilly bits warm.
Yes if we could, we would have gotten head to toe Possum fur! but loaded up on socks for sure!
Any issues tackling the Timber Trail in your gravel bike? Or is it just a road bike?
Ghee!
Love your videos, but why do you just wear toe socks when riding?

No. Use a camp ground. Support a local business and then all your shit and rubbish isn't left in a field. Nobody likes freedom campers.
