The expulsion of Indians from Uganda by Idi Amin had a severe impact on the country's economy, with a decline in GDP by over 40% in the years following the expulsion. The loss of skilled workers and entrepreneurs led to a decline in production and economic output, and foreign investment also decreased due to political instability and uncertainty. The economic shock caused by their departure had a long-lasting impact on Uganda's economy.
The ugandans had become slaves to the slaves, just like the burmese to the indian muslims, as one burmese indipendence leader said "slaves to the slaves" After indpendence most indians were expelled and of course it lead to economic downfall, because indians had been the british tool for indirect rule with a large role in the economy. That is not absolutely true, Amin asked the asian community, many holding both uk and Ugandan citizenship living in Uganda to keep their money and wealth in Uganda and not in uk and Swiss banks. The asian community exploited Uganda by making all their wealth using Ugandan resources and the money was banked in uk and Swiss banks fir themselves which didn't benefit the economy of Uganda. Amin gave an ultimatums to the asian community to become Ugandan and bring their money back to Uganda from uk and Swiss banks and help develop Uganda if they wanted to stay in Uganda and use Ugandan resources or leave Uganda for good within 3 weeks. Most asian community chose to leave and they played heavily on the victim card so that uk and the rest if world would give them asylum. The asian community wanted the the best of both world, ie become rich with Ugandan resources but not put back for the progress of Uganda and its people. Why didn't the asian community accept to give up their dual uk citizenship, bring back their money and stay back in Uganda as Ugandan and help build the country. I know for a fact that asian industrialists including Madubani family damaged and broke the machines of their factories before leaving Uganda so that they could not be used by Ugandan people. Today, the Indian community who have returned to Uganda offers university scholarships to the black natives of Uganda. They also have black natives working in their businesses as trusted employees. We no longer have separate schools for the Indians and the black natives, like Old Kampala Secondary School where as one of the few black natives I attended my A-Levels, when it was predominantly Indian. Believe it or not, the Indian community in Uganda have even requested to be recognised as one of the native tribes of Uganda! On several occasions I have spotted some of the men dressed in our traditional kiganda attire such as the Kanzu. Incredible, isn't it.? The expulsion took the Indian community by surprise. Imagine being expelled from one's native country within just three months, where one had lived for three or even four generations! An Indian friend and former classmate of mine at Old Kampala I visited at their home at Nakivubo during the expulsion told me something I will never forget. When I asked him where his family was going, he replied that none of them knew their destination, but that they would make up their mind as soon as their "papers" were ready. Was 1972 a lesson learnt? I think so. Look at the transformation of the Indian community in Uganda today. I go further by suggesting that just like the death of Apartheid South Africa, the expulsion was one of those things that sent a message to the world that black Africans can take risks, seek redress, assert themselves and actually prevail, even if their fortunes and economy would be in jeopardy, as it happened in Uganda in 1972.
@@matthewmann8969 But neither is anyone else throughout the world native to wherever they were born and brought up, except, of course, the natives of eastern Africa. We know from scientific evidence, that everyone on this planet originated from the African continent specifically in eastern Africa, where our ancestors lived in prehistoric times until they migrated around 50,000 to 60,000 years ago, to everywhere they are found today on this planet. Thanks to my undergraduate biological anthropology professor. Therefore, immigration is as human as the changing weather. No one can stop it. Back in prehistoric times unlike today, nation states were non-existent. Today, as a result, we have laws, regulations and so on, that determine who, when and how one can move from one country to another and what one's responsibilities will be when one gets there. We also have the concept of human rights, which are universal. So, when the "Desi people" you have mentioned decided to come to Uganda generations ago, they were simply returning to the same place their ancestors had left thousands of years before. Even though their ancestors had left no nation states behind, their descendants have to deal with today's realities. Today in every single African country we have different ethnic groups, languages, laws and so on, everyone migrating there will have to contend with, including the "Desi people." It would be up to them to adapt to their new environment, just like their ancestors had done thousands of years ago when they migrated from Eastern Africa to the rest of the world. Hence, the question you should be asking yourself is this: Can the "Desi people" returning to Africa, live in harmony with the "native" Africans, even though they are not "native" to Africa as you have put it? The simple answer is yes. However, there will be sacrifices to be made, challenges to overcome and so on. Most people are quite comfortable living where they were born and brought up unless they choose not to. They would then have no one to blame but themselves.

They also used to treat the indigenous Ugandans as salaves or something close to that.

Ugandan Asians didnt help Uganda they helped themself to enrich themself and at the same time took over the racist colonial mentality the British had at the time to the Ugandans. They where already made a merchent middle class so its not hard to build yourself up abroad with already having certain recources.
Desi people will never be native to Africa neither will any other Non African no matter how friendly they are or at least appear to be yeah.
Recognized as a native tribes of Uganda?? WTH?? That’s disgusting. The nerve of them trying to insert themselves where they clearly do not belong. They are South Asian - let them be proud of that and stay out of Africa. Regardless of how long they have been there, they will never be African natives- they do not deserve such an honour.

Having suffered 63 years of British class rule, it is no wonder Ugandans had little patience for this. They fell prey to Idi Amin's plans to paint them as the villains when the economy soured.
And even though our economy suffered the loss of many skilled workers, many Ugandans, even today, still celebrate the brutish Amin for this one act.
@John Babirukamu...South Asians would to the same of any group would be stacked above them in their own land. We can say what we want of Idi Amin but this was good decsion made by him.
