I felt worst for Jipyeong when during the end credits - the camera pans over Dalmi’s desk and there is not a single picture of Jipyeong, everyone but him :(
I really dislike Dalmi and thanks god she does not love Hjp. Hjp is too good and too perfect for her. She is blind in love just because that man has the big hands only. Ha ha ha what a big joke.!
I had the exact same thought! Like not evn one single pic. Atleast the pic with grandma. Seriously not evn one pic? That was really disappointing the ending also was disappointing to me. It was like ji pyeong's ending just got wasted. So what now he's just happy because dosan accepted his investment?
Same :((( That scene made me so upset because she wouldn't have made it this far if it wasnt for Ji Pyeong's help. It was kinda depicted as how she was thankful for all the people in her life except JP...
Sorry... I still think "Cheese in a Trap" reigns supreme. Just typing about it pisses me off!!! 😂🤣 For some reason I couldn't really get into HJP character. He was just too negative for me. However, I totally understand that he was like a genius when it came to investing and his suggestions were right almost all the time.
@@fareya955 yeah and there's nothing wrong in criticizing and giving feedback. Just because they're popular or whatever doesn't mean everyone has to sing praises of them duh
I felt the writer really didn't make any sense in making dal mi so attached to the letters, if u were just going to treat it like it does not mean anything eventually.
The script is way that off. The storyline got weaker and unconvincing and to some point frustrating. What saved the show was the power acting skills of halmoni and KJP
Nope, Dalmi is in her track. Jipyeong isn't like the character he put in letter. Dalmi said, 'letter Dosan' always agree with her (ep 2 when he went on a date with a guy to a movie), but Jipyeong not. They argue most of the time. Such as about Noongil. He didn't agree about the idea, and want they developed other app that could bring money. Because that's all he care about. 'Letter Dosan' always agree with her, means he always believed in her. Meanwhile, Jipyeong never trust her. Just like when he ran from his office to help Dalmi from bad journalist. Because he didn't believe she can handle it. If the movie guy rejected right away after he disagreed, why Jipyeong acceptable after lots of arguing? While Dosan, he always believed in her. When SamSan Tech fought about shareholders, he said to Dalmi that he chose her to be his CEO, and he wouldn't regret it. He believed in every decision that she made and will give full support. That's why she gave him most the shares, because she believed he will always agree with her. That is one meaning of big hands mean, not just literally his hands are big, but a big support. Jipyeong also insult them, even ridiculed Dalmi's idea about sailing off without a map right in front of her face. He is the one that received the letters, if those letters means so much, he must understand the key word from those letters. Unfortunately, it's real Dosan who understands. Jipyeong has been away from the character he made, while Dosan gets closer to the character of 'letter Dosan'. And one more, Dalmi's dream is to change the world. That would not happen if she is with Jipyeong. Why? Changing the world is so challenging, while Jipyeong never want to take any risk. He became hotshot investor because he only invested to a profitable companies. Companies that have higher chance to succeed. That is his character. His philosophy will not compatible with Dalmi's who is a true enterpreneur. She is a creator, she wants to create something to make a better world. Not just about making money. That would be happened if she works together with someone that understand her. It is Dosan, even to her absurd ideas (such as rock and flower during hackathon or talking dog when they discussed about what product they'll make). He always listened, understand, and then make it into algorithm. This could also be the meaning of big hands, he can make her dream come true. Dalmi-Dosan is a dream team just like Ruth and Martin Ginsburg, they share dreams and build them from zero together. So, don't rush saying the scenario was written badly just because you don't understand the story by skipping scene or because your hero don't get the girl. First or second lead is not about who is most miserable or most adorable. First lead is the one who bring the main message of the story.
@EASquak I'm #teamjipyeong too but I'm afraid I won't agree with you in this Ji Pyeong doesn't share his feelings and this is why he lost her like Yong Sil said to him "you are afraid" from the first episode to the last he was portrayed as someone who protects himself with logic and harshness that he can't express himself. What she said is somehow right about him being too realistic but it is his shell caracter, it's not he doesn't believe in sailing without a map it's just that it is too scary for him. Ji pyeong was the one in the letters but after 15 years he changed and realized that too late While Do San is a good match for Dal Mi because even though he didn't believe in what was written he changed to be the "one" in the letters What people miss about the story is that Do San catched an opportunity while Ji pyeong missed it ! This is why we see Do San as an opportunist especially when he starts acting childish and mean while Ha Ji Pyeong is trying to help but once again he is not helping for the sake of others he is helping for Dal Mi and grandma which doesn't make him that selfless The only reason we like Ji Pyeong me included is because he is a real caracter who worked hard to make his own luck and who has insecurities and who doesn't show his vulnerability while the others are just well "drama characters"
@@ummuhuwaida He didn't rush because he doesn't trust her he rushed because he feels protective towards her and that was the moment that broke him the fact that Dal Mi doesn't need his protection anymore. As the person in the letters he said it himself but not for the reasons you said. Money is Ji pyeong first concern because it was the one thing that helped him besides granma he even puts granma above when he says "I wish this debt could be payed with money but it can't". He always disagrees with Dal Mi but she gladly accepts it and argues with him even more and likes to ve nosy with the guy she dated she cut him loose! While with Ha Ji Pyeong she always asks him again and again till the hardest moment she takes his advice over Do San because she knows he's more realistic she says "I want reality not hopes and dreams" You see Do San is good for her but she always needs Ji Pyeong to be "the brakes for the car" like they mentioned in the drama And from a of this I say yeay the story was well written but not for the reasons you mentioned and we still have this void of Dal Mi not getting to know Ji pyeong but it's just because he doesn't open up which was very clear but inside he's still the one from the letters he just resisted it ! He kept them for 15 years... Just a statement: Ji Pyeong caracter gave a message to us Do San didn't !
OMG! you are dead-on with your analysis with Start-Up. HPJ was the only reason why I continued watching this drama, he was my biggest joy and heartbreak because I fell in love with the Han Ji-Pyeong/Grandma story. The second half of this drama was a let down and started to fall apart, it has too many plot holes as the story progressed, the storyline started to suffer. I never got bored with HPJ story though and to me that's an ultimate winner. Thanks to Kim Seon Ho for breathing life into HPJ character.
My sentiments exactly and you’ve written exactly what my thoughts were as I continued to watch this drama. If not for HPJ, I would’ve just discarded this drama.
Yup! Nothing wrong with Joohyuk he is an amazing actor, but the way his character was written, was just not convincing enough to be the main lead. Seonho's character and his portrayal REALLY swept all of us off our feet. His character is just so likeable and has such a sad backstory, you can't help but root for him. He's a good man who really grew throughout the show!
@@aliakhtar_0807 nope, he may be the lead but Ji Pyeong's character is a thousand times greater than the lead. and with Ji Pyeong's character development? make that a million times.
Finally someone talking about this 😂😂 I needed more opinions on this drama, thank you so much. I was getting to upset over this. I just want Han Jipyeong to be happy, I don't care if he ends with Dal mi at this point.
what i don’t understand is why did they start the plot with dalmi’s and jipyeong’s story if they were going to make her end up with another dude totally different from the actually lovable character that they started the whole plot with... i mean dude if you’re gonna make me love han jipyeong in the first two eps then continue making me happy at the end or the plot or go away
I had same problem...why show han ji peyong at first if you guys wanted her to end up with nam do san...at first episode, i was already invested in his story...and i was like he is the main lead...but when got to know at the end of the first eps that the real nam do san is gonna be the main lead...i decided to stop myself from watching it from further heartbreak...i can understand her decision of choosing nam do san very much later after reading and kind of thinking from what i little know, but still i feel that she should have ended with han ji peyong...i also didn't know who was the main lead...so the revelation that han ji peyong is second lead made me angry at writers for introducing me to this character so early....
Yes, if they were going to commit to the love triangle, they should have started with Dosan’s childhood as well. Instead, in later episodes, we only get snippets of Dosan’s childhood as an unambitious child who always let others win. Personally, I would have preferred if they followed all four children - Dalmi, HJP, Injae, and Dosan - and then create two power couples :’))))))

I'm #TeamJipyeong but I don't think he will end up with Dalmi. Her reaction when she found out Jipyeong was the one who wrote the letters was really disappointing. It was like, oh so you're the Dosan from the letters... okay, got it. No heartfelt emotion whatsoever. They have yet to have any conversation about the LETTERS.
And her grandmother being behind all those letters!!! She witnessed SDM being crazy for the letters that she cannot find a bf for a whole 15 yrs and yet grandmother didn't even tried to tell DM the truth.
Her reaction like that because of what Jipyeong told her. When she asked who wrote the letters, he replied, "Your grandma asked me for a favor, she wanted to give you a friend. So I wrote the letters." This mean, he didn't have any intention or love interest when writing those letters. It's just grandma favour. What else she can asked? It will be different if he said, "At first, grandma asked me to write a letter to you. But then I feel like writing to you is fun and I enjoyed it. So I continue writing afterwards." This means he wrote on his own will. But he can't say this, because it will be definitely a lie. He stopped writing after he moved from grandma's house. So, that's it. Jipyeong told clause number one. So Dalmi thinks that it was lie from beginning, what's more she can say?
@@ummuhuwaida exactly. HJM never cared for her existence for 15 years. It was only when grandma asked for help he cared to intervene. He could've simply met her and said he was the one who wrote those letters under the pseudonym NDS but instead of that he tried finding the real NDS.
@@shijowilson I mean dalmi had told injae that she had found Nam dosan, so if Han goes to her and tells her I'm the one who wrote the letters she won't be able to take him to the party because he Hjp and everyone knows him and injae will think that whatever dalmi said is a lie. So that's why finding nds was important, plus the writer had to find some way of introducing nds, so they gave this stupid reason. Anyone irl would go and say I wrote the letters, but the writer wante to introduce nds so that's why they made jp find nds. Honestly would've been better if they had just jp admit it from the beginning but plot Armour.
I am team jipyeong . The one thing I finally liked about nam do san when he said to his dad that let's not be each others pride and not burden each other , then he proceeds to say to dalmi that I want to be your trophy your pride. Character development went from 0 to minus infinity.
I totally agree with him, Nam Dosan came out of nowhere. The writer build Jipyeong's character more than Dosan that's why most of us are rooting for our good boy because we all know his backstory.
Exactly. The best end for me for the drama wld be Dalmi rejectiing Do San as she cant think of a reason but continue as business partner while she go to HJP and ends up tgther.
@@OnesOut same thought.. i would love it if the ending is as mentioned above, but the writer must pull a “moon lovers” to do it. And no one can pull a moon lovers like the moon lovers writer theirselves. [For context, iu was attracted to the 8th prince in the first couple of epi of moon lovers. But then iu becomes attracted to the 3rd prince. And theres a plot twist at the end of it that makes you cry a river. But the whole plot in that drama makes sense]. the writer of start up has failed to make us move ship from jipyeong to dosan, so if shes pulling a plot twist at the end of the series it would increase the stupidity of the plot significantly. .

The story started out really good and has a lot of potential. However, the story leaned so much on how Dalmi is attached to the letters instead of properly having stories on managing Startup companies.. PROPERLY, not the emotionally driven way they showed us. Then.. All of a sudden, they dropped the storyline about the letters coz they have to forcefully push the main leads together... For no reason at all. Honestly this is the first kdrama that I did not feel any spark on the leads and like they have thrown their logic in the trash.
People who think SDM is a deluded girl who used to hang on some letters like her lovelife line depended on them, they have just understood nothing about her and about the drama.
Like you I thought the story was going to revolve around the love letters too. That soon ended for me at the end of episode 1 when that flower petal flew inside of Samsan's office and onto Dosan's head. I was instantly blown away because I just knew HJP was the lead. 🤣😂
Right I think the writer should have collab with the director.. the Director alone could not justify the story with such a strong first love build up character.. the only chance were wasted..
@@eiram31She made herself available for dating. She went to movies with guys as in dates. She rejected them afterwards but she gave them their chance. Agree with the best lead part but have to speak up for the writer. If the writer really was bad and screwed up, none of us would be hurt this deeply for Good Boy’s sake :(
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I SAID. The ONLY reason she gave Do San the time of day was because she thought he was THE Do San. People should stop romanticizing those letters... He was 18 yo pretending to be 12 yo. People turning them into love letters is gross. For Dal Mi, it was never about the real Do San (or Ji-Pyeong), she had an idolized version of a man in her head that simply did not exist. That's why she rejected all the guys after a date. The letters only allowed Do San a shot. When she met him, she believed he would be the idolized version she created in her head, when she found out he isn't (and neither was Ji-Pyeong just to be clear), she started to see him for him and falling in love with him. That's why she later told her grandma that if she had to pick between the one from the letters and the one from now, she would pick the one from now. She said she loves his hand because of the time he held her hand. At the end of the show, she said she loves him because it's him. Not because of letters, not because of some illusion she has of him, but simply because it's him.
@@khenpy Episode 9. I remembered the scene slightly wrong though, I thought she said it directly but she only hinted at it. She talked with her grandma about her question of who she would pick again and said "Could it be that they are two different people?" because at that point she was suspicious about the letters being written by Ji Pyeong and then she looked at Do San and talked about liking him so much it scares her or something along those lines.
I was almost pissed off when Jipyeong wanted his letters back and Dosan first agreed for the exchange of the money tree then Dosan suddenly backed out and told Jipyeong no, he’s keeping the letters, and then hang up. Like BRUH that’s so low??? I don’t know why the writer had to paint Dosan in an even more unlikeable manner when literally most of the viewers already have negative sentiments towards his character >:(
Also what's the point of NDS wanting to keep the letter. Its not his in the first place. Dalmi's character was as disappointing as dosan's . They both r perfect for each other, dumb af. Han jipyeong would hv gotten a better girl in the future who acknowledges all that he does for her.
Nam Dosan is the main lead, though he had a 10 second clip only in episode 1. Regardless, he was great in the beginning. Relatable, cute, dorky, and very lovable. Until he’s not. I really can’t pinpoint where this happened, but Dosan quickly became the most toxic, manipulative, serial liar with anger issues and violent tendencies, male lead who never gets called out for his actions. In fact, he is rewarded for everything he does, good and bad. Why? Because he’s the main lead, of course! Duh. On the other hand, we have Jipyeong, our second main lead who feels like the main lead but is treated like a punching bag and a waste disposal. Everything revolves around him: the plot, the letters, the character development, and the relationships with all the other characters. He is the heart and soul of the story, no matter what the writers were trying to convince us otherwise. This was in part Kim Seon Ho’s doing, as he breathed life into his character. What I firmly believe happened was that Han Jipyeong was not MEANT to be as loved as he is. Rich, quick-witted with a sharp tongue and a self-made man, he could’ve easily become the antagonist of the story, but Seon Ho achieves in making him out to be a beautifully flawed human, a man who grew up with nothing and has had to fend for himself all his life.
Exactly, nds was great in the beginning but then quickly became toxic. Dalmi even said that she's still getting used to nds and that she still loves the one from the letters in one of the episodes. She wouldn't have given him a chance if she hadn't thought that he was her childhood love.
Jipyeong will forever be the best second lead we ever had. Seonho's acting is just.. PERFECTION✨ I just can't imagine other actors portraying Han jipyeong than him
dosan's still a child in the end. it was ji pyeong who had to literally put it into terms for him to understand and tell him to go after dalmi. My brain is still having a hard time trying to wrap around the fact that this writer thought that dosan's hand size outweighs the letters. Also to hear that line from Ji Pyeong saying that to Dosan was more infuriating. this writer is going on my blacklist.
exactly lmfao. the fact that dosan was STILL that insecure towards JP, and JP himself had to tell him to go after her. wtf??? maybe work on your insecurities first before getting into another relationship. I know they were trying to go for emotional but I couldn’t help but laugh when JP actually uttered those words about “hands beating out memories.” yes, hands beat EIGHTEEN years of memories. ridiculous 😂 the fact that he didn’t go after her in those 15 years apparently doesn’t make him the guy from the letters??? I’m pretty sure he was trying to make something of himself during those years, trying to SURVIVE. even the writers couldn’t justify why DS was DM’s endgame and actually had JP say those words and invalidate the existence of the letters. this writing was soooo infuriating, fr.
@@AvieMV the writer gave up halfway into the drama. she didn't know what direction she wanted to go. she gave ji pyeong everything a male lead is supposed to have (caring, selfless, kind) but end up with nothing vs dosan who's character was suppose to be a cardboard stand-in for ji pyeong and end up with everything. make it make sense writer-nim! Also I will fight tooth and nail at people saying that ji pyeong was horrible with how 'harsh' his words were. He was doing his job. Anyone who's worked in an office setting knows that how Ji Pyeong speaks is considered nice vs all the crap that goes on. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Agreed, the writer created a 2nd lead that took the drama by storm. When HJP character rose to prominence, she knew she messed it up big time so whats the next course of action? Throw HJP character under the bus. 1. 3 years gap, total fast forwarding without allowing room for HJP to confee to Dalmi or show some effort. By the time he wasmt to confess, dosan cockblock by returning. 2. The fact that HJP have to point blank tell dosan abt DM true feelings. Fuckin hell, the most stupidest writing ive seen in my 7 years of watching kdrama. 3. Is making HJP verbally concede defeat by saying he is not the one in the letters and if he was, he would have looked for her at that 15 years. And notice dm didnt have much lines to say, which shows, okay i am here to listen that you are officially going to give up on me.
@@juhee589 she was definitely trying to make dosan relatable/down to earth/warm and supportive guy but oops it took a wrong turn. Do San has a nice family, a great cousin, true friends and colleagues, a pretty and persevering girlfriend he marries. I don't think he will complain compared to Ji Pyeong. Ji Pyeong has an AI who tells him the weather every morning. He is so great of course. Maybe you should consider the question storywise and not fanwise.
@@SainyaHokage all that you mentioned reaffirm all the reasons why jipyeong is better than dosan lol. Dosan was born with everything and he still was envious, obsessive, has anger issues and was constantly pitying himself for no reason. He had everything anyone could wish for and he still had the audacity to say that he had nothing at all. Jipyeong had nothing and he still managed to grow nicely and to stand for himself. No self pity, no blaming others for his shortcomings, he knew how to APOLOGIZE (dosan who), he was so so selfless, he puts everyone’s happiness before his own and he gave more than he took. All that came from someone that truly had nothing all his life. So yes, Jipyeong is better in all aspects.
I do agree with the 2nd reason : their chemistry, when they're arguing and bantering is like they complete each other, they build positive relationship, even Dalmi didn't agree with his opinion, JP will still support her, or when they have a short yet deep convo, although there's no skinship at all but it feels so sweet and warm.
I skipped almost all scenes of main leads after 10th episode they were annoying AF I completed it for only Han Jipyeong and grandma scenes honestly at end I liked in jae more than Dalmi
When the grandma ask dalmi which dosan she prefer and the answer ..dosan from the 15yrs letter but suddenly the big hand over power the 15yrs letter... Gosh crazy...
While watching episode 16 im like "do san and dalmi's scenes seems boring as F to me now. I want to skip their scenes and see more of jipyeong's scenes." Lmaoo. Jipyeong and halmeoni is carrying the series with their emotional scenes while dosan and dalmi's romantic scenes looks shallow to me. They aren't giving me excitement.
Srsly,he is the strongest second male lead ever His impact are no joke He even got solo content from Netflix,a solo content for a 2nd lead?it means they know the character is so popular, I watch it till the end ep bcs of han jipyeong
Okay i'm crying. the real justice for jipyeong character, still dont know what the meaning about this drama at all. why PRH made character jipyeong just like that :(
You know when start up began I was immediately drawn by Jipyeong and I had TRULYYY hoped that Jipyeong wouldn't meet a cruel 2nd lead fate. But the writers did him so dirty, even with the ending all I could wonder was- Did Jipyeong ever get any less lonely? He spent all this time helping others, did he ever get someone to do the same for him other than halmeoni?
Great video, Paul - as a screenwriter myself I can't understand the storyline and character development. The screenwriters choices make no sense. I'm so furious I'm even considering not even watching the last two episodes - but still hope we've been played all the time and Jipyeong will complete his characters arc as it should be.
Spare yourself the disappointment. Or if you do, don't even bother analysing it because it's no longer as deep as it seemed. Also, as much as we know dramas aren't always supposed to mirror reality, this one just doesn't make sense. Lol
Most of the funding came from brands that have Suzy and NJH as ambassadors and they came from the same agency too... i think that's where the illogical writing came from, after all the drama needs money to be produced and everyone is still a paid worker. this is just an assumption, but i mean that's the only logical reason some scriptwriter as big as PHR will do this... her past works was completely spotless and amazing. everyone was deeply in love with it. Dream High, I Hear Your Voice, While You Were Sleeping, and Pinocchio!? 👏 i like both NJH and KSH as an actor, but no one can deny that the storyline was crafted in such a way that was so forced to make us drop the second lead and root for NDS. it's just a shame that Start Up which had so much potential in the start ended in such an abrupt way in which nothing makes sense.
By the end of it, I never cared anymore about Jipyeong and Dalmi, and just wanted closure for the most significant plot line in this entire show, basically the one thing that influenced everyone’s lives- the letters. And yet, the writer still refused to give us that. Going so far as to invalidate Jipyeong being the guy from the letters. How hard was it for both to acknowledge how important the letters were in their past, and the comfort it gave to BOTH of them. Dalmi to acknowledge that Jipyeong is her first love, the guy she held dear for 15 years. Jipyeong telling Dalmi that he was her first love, and that it was gonna be hard, but he has to move on. Couldn’t even work out a friendship between the two after 18 years worth of memories??? How does that even make sense from a literary standpoint?
Throughout my experience watching K-dramas, I've never thought very deeply about how the character will be after the show ended. But now, I still thinking about how HJP's life would be if the grandma died. Will he be alright? who'll accompany him when he feels alone? Will the orphanage children accompany HJP? Well, after repeating several times the 2 main scenes in the last episode, namely when he was with the grandma and when he met 'yongsil', I realized that happiness isn't always about "we can end up with the person we love". But when we can do anything we loved. In this case, HJP likes things where he devote his life for the lives of others. He's been a good boy. And I hope, wherever he is, he'll always be fine. Really, how sad it would be, if only, in any parts of the world, really lived a person like HJP and ended up alone, I'd judge that most of life is so hideously unfair.
I don't know why I'm watching this. I'm just randomly searching for Han Ji Pyeong all over the place and RUclips recommended this to me. My gosh, I still can't move on.
That's not true... Dosam learn so much more than Jp in the time jump, you can see he change a lot and after that he embodies the role of the "real lead"
Yes. Because they loved him before because NJH is a great actor. But tbh in this drama Jipyeong character is more admirable. And Seonho played it really well.
This is the first drama that doesn't make me feel a thing when they kissed... It seems like being forced and no spark at all... Am happy that Jipyeong doesn't get Dalmi 😂😂🤣🤣 I'll have him myself
DoDal's first kiss kind of bothered me as to how good they were for a bunch of no-relationship-since-birth. it also reminded me how shitty my first kiss was when they had it on a rooftop while i got it in a dark alleyway. lmaooo 😭😭😭
The guy literally manipulated his way into Dalmi’s heart pretending to be someone else, prevented Ji Pyeong from telling the truth on different occasions and finally when everything was revealed, he cried and went on and on about how excruciating it was for him to lie ( poor him lol) and then after one episode he was totally forgiven?! He literally got away with everything by self-pity. What disturbs me the most is that people were rooting for him just because he was played by NJH. I’m sorry but if I didn’t know who the main lead was, I would have thought DS was a villain.
Oh how manipulative he is. I can’t forget how he told Dalmi that him and Jipyeong were close friends so she wouldn’t talk to Jipyeong. He wanted her to believe they were friends so Dalmi would tell everything she wanted to tell Jipyeong to him first so she didn’t have to interact with JP. How can anyone excuse that behavior??? That’s not cute.
@@swana4960 ikr??? Remember when he was supposed to keep grandma’s secret ( that she was losing his vision) ? Did you notice how he took advantage of the situation? He told Dalmi because he wanted her to know he’s developing Noongil because of her grandma. He wanted to win her heart. And he didn’t tell Ji Pyeong but at the exact moment he needed his help, he brought it up because he knew how important grandma was to Ji Pyeong. And the fact that he eavesdrops on Dalmi’s conversations without her knowing.. omg! He stalked her while she was drunk, listened to her conversation with that lady and that’s how he found out how she really feels and then the next day, he knew exactly what to say to comfort her!!! Idk that’s not romantic. He also eavesdrops on her conversation with In Jae in ep 15 which was followed by that stupid elevator scene. Him bragging about how marvelous it was to sail off without a map blah blah blah. He learns about what Dalmi wants to hear and later he tells her the exact thing to impress her even if he doesn’t believe in it himself. Every single time... he’s just a manipulative simp. I have lost count of his questionable behaviors tbh. He had no morals.
lead or not , only this kdrama makes the second male lead have really great chemistry and sparks with the female lead. nam do san and seo dal mi no matter how the director tries to make them all lovey dovey it only disgusts me huhuhu 😐✌️
@@OnesOut the thing is you think it is a biased opinion because namdosan was played by NYJ, but on the perspective of those people who don't know any of the lead stars, Han Jipyeong rises without a single doubt than any of the character introduced. imagine reading this in a book, I don't think you will still root for a Namdosan. we are talking about the character here and not about not your faves who played their role amazingly.
I honestly don't understand where was this chemistry between JP and DM.... A lot of chemistry from his side, absolutely none from hers. She was never interested in him beyond mentorship/friendship.
This Kdrama killed all the beauty of handwritten love letters and the pure sweet first love 💔 It shows no matter how selfless and generous and kind you can be , you get nothing at the end but a broken heart 💔 Instead, lying and taking other people's identity and efforts (one year of writing those beautiful letters) and being violent and hasty would get you luv !??? ... is this really the kind of message this drama is trying to convey ??? 😣😣😥😥
@@henzz14 but he's the only one who got benefitted from it. There's no way in hell dalmi would even look twice at him were it not for the letters or the lies
Kim Seonho's potrayal of Han Jipyeong is hands down the best acting in kdrama world. His little gestures, facial expressions, and tone of voice are spot on. He made Han Jipyeong so likeable and the directing crew and writers probably did not anticipate that he will outshine everyone. But they should have had a hint during their filming process because Seonho speaks through the lens. His emotional scenes with Halmeonie, it's crazy real. That's why our pain at the end is so big. We rooted for the best guy and they did him dirty 😢. I'm just happy Kim Seonho is getting the recognition he well derserves. Will continue to root for you. Han Jipyeong, you are an unforgettable character. I will hold you in my heart so deeply. ❤
i like nam joohyuk, i watched some of his previous dramas. but then kim seonho came like a storm and stole my heart. man, he is no joke. i love him so much
I also would like to say it’s also not only about the character that’s written for Han Jipyeong but Kim Seonho who played Han Jipyeong’s character shined that character!
Love does not need reason and it is not first come best served. Nam Dosan is not a negative man and does not take no for answer just like the female lead’s dad. ✌️
Why people choose JiPyeong rather than Dosan? Now I understand. Why do few people sympathize with Dosan. Because most of the other kdrama have the main character who is almost perfect or has a sad past like JiPyeong. But there is one very interesting fact Dosan. He is a representative of most of the youth in the real world. Not having a fixed stance, cowardice, not yet successful, and insecure. The reason I like Dosan is not because he is better than JiPyeong or bcs the actors. 100% I'm sure Jipyong is better than Dosan. JiPyoeng is the one everyone wants. Handsome rich firm protective and nearly perfect. But Dosan is the majority of us. Always want to be proud of our parents and the people we love. But quite the opposite. "DISAPPOINTING". Dosan is the representative character of the StartUp. StartUp is not just a title (startup). StartUp is a character. And that character is in Dosan. Who is starting a better life. Dosan who is struggling. Dosan who is pioneering. When I saw dosan, I seemed to see myself, who was struggling to taste the sweet and bitter life of the age towards adulthood, feeling insecure when seeing friends is more successful who is insecure when meeting our crush. We have to learn from the character of Dosan. THAT THE REALITY IS LIKE THIS. Still struggling. We need Dosan to motivate ourselves. I tihnk that message from writer want to give to audience. Why can't Jipyeong play the lead? Because the jipyoeng here has been successful. if the main character is JiPyeong, the title is not a startup. A realistic woman would definitely choose Jipyoeng, but in reality a man who is almost perfect like Jipyeong is almost non-existent in this world. Jipyeong Is A SandBox for Dalmi, someone who protects dalmi from getting hurt. Most people definitely choose jipyoeng for dalmi rather than dosan. But Dosan is what Dalmi needs. Dosan is Dalmi's wing. Someone who encourages Dalmi to reach her best. Someone who doesn't criticize her but believes that dalmi is more than enough to fly without a doubt.
Dalmi is like blinded by love. But it’s the opposite of her character which is smart. She even stay silent when Dosan disrespect Jipyeong. How come? Her character is so confusing.
Han Ji Pyeong is really a remarkable in KDrama history. Kim Seon Ho really justified the character of Ji Pyeong, he is a great actor. You can't easily forget Start Up series after watching it. Congratulations and salute to all Actors and Actresses of Start Up they are all good.
*I came to the conclusion in the last two episodes that it wasn’t really Dal-Mi that I wanted to end up with Jipyeong. I just wanted HIM to be happy and have someone see the value in him. I thought they’d shoehorn in him with In-Jae and it would’ve made a bit of sense. Especially with her wearing all white at the very last scene.* *Thank you for pointing out the crying!! It was so annoying. To the point I was super uninterested in any scene with Do-San. HOW are hands reason enough to love someone. Now I get the beauty in deciding to stop believing in fairy tales and go with your heart for what’s in front of you even if it fails, but Do-San is just an over all bad choice. WHY is he a choice?*
Dosan’s character is so flawed. He is such a manipulative sad boy and his immaturity is even comparable to to those of antagonists. But one thing that this series do is that it depicts reality. In reality, no matter how perfect or likeable you are it doesn’t guarantee you getting the girl. And sometimes, the girl would even choose your rival for no logical reason at all.
He is not the most perfect anything, he is really mean and talks in a very aggressive way, he treats people really bad. Jp dosent deserve Dalmi bc he never makes a move to be with her
@@mjcbk Alright. Let me set this this straight. Of course Ji Pyeong isn’t perfect. No one is actually. But we can’t deny that his character is very likeable as shown from the facts on this video. Also for him being mean, he has a reason to do so. He isn’t actually “really mean”. It’s just that he does not shy away from from giving honest comments and criticism which is very much needed since he’s a prospective investor dealing with business start-ups. But he reflected on his past attitude and changed his ways eventually. Now, you have a point on why didn’t Ji Pyeong made a move on Dalmi during the 3 years that Dosan is away. Was he too busy? Is he hesitant? Who knows. We can blame the writers for not explaining why the hell Ji Pyeong didn’t make a move on Dalmi during that time. But I’m pretty sure if he did, it would’ve been game over and Team Ji Pyeong wins. But that isn’t the case.
@@frncsjm but even in the series he aknowels that he is mean.... I get that is he's job, but you can be honest and not being mean xd In the last episode he is prove wrong when he said that he never support a company that would never be profitable, and he was really mean with the guys the first time they met. He is a great character but NOT perfect in any shape o form. And it was his fault that Dalmi fell in live with Dosam, Jp had years to approach dalmi, but when dosam had the chance he went all in. In the real world that's the person who wins, the one that takes risks and does everything with his heart (like dosam did in the series) (My mother tongue is spanish; sorry for the bad grammar)
Wow, your analysis is very spot on. 😊👏. I think this biggest case of second lead syndrome partly happened because of the charm of kim seon ho too. It is supposed to be a typical second lead character as other kdrama. Alas, Kim seon ho nailed it in every scene that make everyone rooting for him. He made a loveable Han Ji Pyeong and with that great acting and fresh handsome face, he made people falling hard for Han Ji Pyeong. 😊
Revisiting this show 5 years ago, and I agree. I feel like the writer was banking on the actor’s historical characters to feed the love story. Justice for Han Jipyeong forever 😭
About 2 months ago i found Kim Seonho. I watched his reality TV show. Then decided to watch Start Up even though i know he's the 2nd lead. Just watched 3 episodes and in every episode i cried for him. WHY DIDN'T THE WRITERS GAVE HIM THE LEAD ! !!!!!!
#TeamJipyeong Start-up is already over but I'm not over ji pyeong 😭 like why all those year she was looking for the boy in letters and at the last she chose do-san?
I'm 100% sure that if I had watched this drama in my early 20s, I would have been furious that Jipyong didn’t end up with the girl. But now, watching it in my 30s, I’d prefer a boyfriend (or husband) like Dosan. His love language is through actions -> he protects Dalmi, inspires her to set bigger goals, and supports her unconditionally. As a woman in tech I'd prefer to have a partner as Dosan. Someone who could explain complex staff with no prejudice and judgement. That part felt really refreshing for me 😅 As for Jipyong, I think his main storyline is about learning to open up to the people around him. From that perspective, he did get his happy ending. He acted tough and thought he can handle life alone, which, in my opinion, is why he lost Dalmi. He knew who she was, had feelings for her, and yet didn't approach her, even though he had around 10 years to do so. And then, an extra three years when Dosan was in the US.
All of your points are what I yelled at the TV every episode. HJP was literally as the lead, like the actual leads this writer has written in the past (I Hear Your Voice, Pinocchio, While You Were Sleeping) but for what I can only imagine was based on the actor or trying to be “subversive” did we end up with Dosan. Dosan’s character was a waste for his actor, he tried so hard to infuse pathos and charm into a character that just isn’t written that way. Gah I am STILL not ok about this 😭
I don’t care who the main lead is but the truth is Kim Seon Ho made the success of Start Up, and after that, with HomeCha, he proved he’s a so much talented and attractive actor. A real star never need position to shine, just bcz it ownself shine wherever it is
Omg thank you for this video. I was (still am) so brokenhearted with the ending that I dont even want to rewatch the drama even though I used to love it. What annoyed me so much was that they didn't even bother to give Jipyeong a happy ending he deserved, like he moved on... and??? Gosh the writers need to see this.
In my opinion, JIPYEONG is the most appropriate for Dal mi after all, he was her first love and he has always been behind as a shadow for her.On the other ✋ would have been great if Nam dosan met someone else.!Everyone happy 😊😍😁
Absolutely! From a writing perspective it just makes sense that she would end up with Jipyeong. What’s the point of setting up this story for Jipyeong and then completely ignoring his story
Thats not true, a first love doesn't mean anything. You can see why she falls for dosam through the series, you can't see that that process the other way around
just listening to your summary at the beginning makes you fall in love with HJP lol...then to see the adult version, how could we not fall in love and want him to win all that his heart desires? I will forever love and hate Start-Up
ahh now think I realized why I dropped this drama. I stopped at ep 4 and couldn't get myself to watch it bc of the main lead. There was just something really fake about him like u stated very static 2D character basically created to be the love interest of Suzy's character, and I didn't like the fact that they were planning to snowball the huge lie about the real Dosan writing her the letters.
This drama was good up until the writers made a lot of forced changes. Han ji pyeong had everything to be the romantic lead but for whatever reason the writers forced do nam son in the role of lead love interest. In episode 8, you knew that the writers played favorites and wanted to sell us on the actor who played nam do San. I stopped watching. The story was just bad. The writers just didnt seem to have any understanding of their own characters and why they act the way they do. The whole plot felt contrived.
Will I guess when they hired the actors they all knew what the roles are. Who is lead & who is second lead. I do think the writers lost it from episode 8.
@The Asian Theory The narrative that the people wants heavily reflects in their values, they want love to have a reason like how people got mad on 500 days of summer when the female left without reason and fall in love with someone else at first sight. THE REASON GROWS AS THE STORY PROGRESSES. It really awesome how the main character who is blindly in love sees much clearer than the audience themselves, failing to see the theme "sailing off blind" which is a major component of the story. And was foreshadowed since the first episode by dal-mi and her father gaving up their jobs. The values that Dal-mi and Han ji-pyeong have do not align and will be a problem if they ever got together.
Wow! Awesome analysis. You completely echo what I believed- why did the writers treat Han Jim Peong so badly? They never gave him a chance with Dal-mi. It was a very unsatisfying and forced ending to a story that had started off as a modern gripping tale. I think the makers should come out with a season 2 with Han Ji Peong as the main lead and make amends to all the millions of viewers and fans!

Yeah so true
i totally agree. KSH acting is no joke.
@@ummuhuwaida sounds like a simp lol
@EASquak I'm #teamjipyeong too but I'm afraid I won't agree with you in this Ji Pyeong doesn't share his feelings and this is why he lost her like Yong Sil said to him "you are afraid" from the first episode to the last he was portrayed as someone who protects himself with logic and harshness that he can't express himself.
What she said is somehow right about him being too realistic but it is his shell caracter, it's not he doesn't believe in sailing without a map it's just that it is too scary for him. Ji pyeong was the one in the letters but after 15 years he changed and realized that too late
While Do San is a good match for Dal Mi because even though he didn't believe in what was written he changed to be the "one" in the letters
What people miss about the story is that Do San catched an opportunity while Ji pyeong missed it ! This is why we see Do San as an opportunist especially when he starts acting childish and mean while Ha Ji Pyeong is trying to help but once again he is not helping for the sake of others he is helping for Dal Mi and grandma which doesn't make him that selfless
The only reason we like Ji Pyeong me included is because he is a real caracter who worked hard to make his own luck and who has insecurities and who doesn't show his vulnerability while the others are just well "drama characters"
While with Ha Ji Pyeong she always asks him again and again till the hardest moment she takes his advice over Do San because she knows he's more realistic she says "I want reality not hopes and dreams"
You see Do San is good for her but she always needs Ji Pyeong to be "the brakes for the car" like they mentioned in the drama
And from a of this I say yeay the story was well written but not for the reasons you mentioned and we still have this void of Dal Mi not getting to know Ji pyeong but it's just because he doesn't open up which was very clear but inside he's still the one from the letters he just resisted it ! Yes, if they were going to commit to the love triangle, they should have started with Dosan’s childhood as well. Instead, in later episodes, we only get snippets of Dosan’s childhood as an unambitious child who always let others win.

Yes....it is very frustrating
In this case, incompetence. An "own goal".
Yeahh😭
I'm #TeamJipyeong but I don't think he will end up with Dalmi. Her reaction when she found out Jipyeong was the one who wrote the letters was really disappointing. It was like, oh so you're the Dosan from the letters... okay, got it. No heartfelt emotion whatsoever. They have yet to have any conversation about the LETTERS.
And her grandmother being behind all those letters!!! She witnessed SDM being crazy for the letters that she cannot find a bf for a whole 15 yrs and yet grandmother didn't even tried to tell DM the truth.
It's because the writer wrote that way. Curse the writer. Lolololol 😆
Hahaha 😂🤣 right!!
That line would be one of the best in the history of kdramas, but they ruined it
THIS. The reverse character development bothered me so much whereas hjp was leaps and bounds ahead
@@notvanessa590 you're right it would have been the best.
@@MemeLeeMusic we can't even compare hjp and nds.
I totally agree with him, Nam Dosan came out of nowhere. The writer build Jipyeong's character more than Dosan that's why most of us are rooting for our good boy because we all know his backstory.
If they just made dosan as dalmi's business partner and jipyeong as her lover it would've been perfect.
Exactly. The best end for me for the drama wld be Dalmi rejectiing Do San as she cant think of a reason but continue as business partner while she go to HJP and ends up tgther.
Nah dont think it would go well even if they tried
Nah i dont think it would have go well because the writer was tryna give a reason of the daily problems
But the whole plot in that drama makes sense]. the writer of start up has failed to make us move ship from jipyeong to dosan, so if shes pulling a plot twist at the end of the series it would increase the stupidity of the plot significantly. .
It’s okay. Dosan & Dalmi is perfect for each other bc they’re both idiot
Han Jipyeong is my biggest crush in kdrama history. and Kim Seonho really really did amazing in playing the role. he is such a great actor

@@SainyaHokage but in some way she did though. she never had a boyfriend nor dated anyone because she waited for dosan of her letters.
@@eiram31She made herself available for dating. She went to movies with guys as in dates. She rejected them afterwards but she gave them their chance. That means she was neither obsessed by Do San from the letters nor waiting for him. She is too realistic for that. She just used the 12 years old Do San of the letters as an excuse or a reference. This is why she fell in love so easily with Do San from SamSan Tech.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I SAID. The ONLY reason she gave Do San the time of day was because she thought he was THE Do San. Had he come up to her with his plaid t-shirt, scruffy hair and delivered the baseball to her. Once she speaks to him about the letters, she would've known he wasn't the Do San and wouldn't have even bothered with him to begin with.
LOL, honestly, I feel like the big hands thing is gonna be a running joke. Why do I like him? Oh, he's got big hands lol
Ha ha ha , I will very upset if the girl whom I Iove just because I have a big hand only .I must wonder if she want me to help her family in farm work. Ha ha ha.
thenataliee Exactly what I was thinking when the show ended. She wouldn't have like the real Nam Do San because he was barely like the letters.
@@ynat1903 which episode did she said she would choose the one from now? I recall she said she'd choose the one from the letter
@@khenpy Episode 9. I remembered the scene slightly wrong though, I thought she said it directly but she only hinted at it.
Also taking care of a plant (which is a gift of someone you like) is way harder than keeping letters and if u forgot or left it in another person house, I don't think it can be considered urs either or didn't care enough to get it back earlier.

Han Jipyeong received so much love because of Kim Seonho’s portrayal. He is an amazing actor.
Dalmi's character was as disappointing as dosan's . They both r perfect for each other, dumb af. Han jipyeong would hv gotten a better girl in the future who acknowledges all that he does for her.
Then HJP is so dumb for liking Dalmi loll
I totally agree about this!
PERIODDDD
In jae would've been good for HJP 😭
sure, I hope there is start up part 2 about han ji pyeong romance
Totally agreed! Well said
Exactly, nds was great in the beginning but then quickly became toxic.
Dalmi even said that she's still getting used to nds and that she still loves the one from the letters in one of the episodes. She wouldn't have given him a chance if she hadn't thought that he was her childhood love.
That sewing when he's angry thing is absolute bullshit
Also a hypocrite he reprimands injae for lying that she was the swing girl but he himself was lying to dalmi

dosan's still a child in the end. it was ji pyeong who had to literally put it into terms for him to understand and tell him to go after dalmi.
I know they were trying to go for emotional but I couldn’t help but laugh when JP actually uttered those words about “hands beating out memories.” yes, hands beat EIGHTEEN years of memories. ridiculous 😂
the fact that he didn’t go after her in those 15 years apparently doesn’t make him the guy from the letters???
@@SainyaHokage all that you mentioned reaffirm all the reasons why jipyeong is better than dosan lol. Dosan was born with everything and he still was envious, obsessive, has anger issues and was constantly pitying himself for no reason.

i like both NJH and KSH as an actor, but no one can deny that the storyline was crafted in such a way that was so forced to make us drop the second lead and root for NDS. it's just a shame that Start Up which had so much potential in the start ended in such an abrupt way in which nothing makes sense.

Honestly, I believe the only reason why people ship DoDal is because they love Nam Joohyuk, not because they love Dosan

Yeah and thats a fact. Jipyeong is still better because he's a good boy and his scenes gives a powerful impact everytime its sad or happy

The character, Han JiPyeong exudes strength and sophistication with plenty of vulnerable moments. He was my absolute favourite!
So true
Oh how manipulative he is. I can’t forget how he told Dalmi that him and Jipyeong were close friends so she wouldn’t talk to Jipyeong. He wanted her to believe they were friends so Dalmi would tell everything she wanted to tell Jipyeong to him first so she didn’t have to interact with JP. How can anyone excuse that behavior??? That’s not cute.
@@swana4960 ikr??? Remember when he was supposed to keep grandma’s secret ( that she was losing his vision) ? Did you notice how he took advantage of the situation?

And he didn’t tell Ji Pyeong but at the exact moment he needed his help, he brought it up because he knew how important grandma was to Ji Pyeong.
And the fact that he eavesdrops on Dalmi’s conversations without her knowing.. omg!
He stalked her while she was drunk, listened to her conversation with that lady and that’s how he found out how she really feels and then the next day, he knew exactly what to say to comfort her!!! Idk that’s not romantic.

Me watching Startup : skipping all the unecessary scene of Do San and Dal Mi.
Please make a series for Ji Pyeong!
The Most Popular Second Lead in The K-Drama History : Han Jipyeong (Kim Seon Ho) 💙💙💙
all the casts did great but Kim Seonho brought different colors in this drama as Han Jipyeong
Jipyeong is definitely better than nam dosan😔
Love does not need reason and it is not first come best served. Nam Dosan is not a negative man and does not take no for answer just like the female lead’s dad. ✌️
better,? says who? hahaha
Seo Dal Mi & Suzy don't think so xp
I agree he was the main and best characters for Start Up, I feel bad for Do San but Mr Han is the main lead
I need a second season where Dalmi ends up with Mr. Han.
sadly the end was to close, because they married and work together, etc
so the writer of start up really make us angry af
Dalmi is like blinded by love. But it’s the opposite of her character which is smart. She even stay silent when Dosan disrespect Jipyeong. How come? Her character is so confusing.
agree omg 😭 her character development could've been better
Maybe she got mesmerized by his kiss
starting the first ep and fell for jipyeong only to find out he wasn't the main T . T
Happened with me... stopped watching it...
The writer really wanted us to be hurt. 😂
Definitly the writer did it.
I also stopped watching....frustrated with the twist of the story
Yes, they did hahaha
I dont think really yall just took it too biased he was tryna give out a message but yall took it in too much
True😂
Seon Ho's acting is too good for a second lead. Love him to the moon 💙. Thanks for this video
I think startup is indeed for kim seonho himself, it boosted his career even more thru this drama!
Han Ji Pyeong is really a remarkable in KDrama history. Kim Seon Ho really justified the character of Ji Pyeong, he is a great actor. You can't easily forget Start Up series after watching it. Congratulations and salute to all Actors and Actresses of Start Up they are all good.
i could've liked nam dosan if he had a character development but nah he's still that annoying character.
True. No development at all and the writer is expecting the viewers to like him " just because"..
@@kyriepark5581 just because he has... nice hands 🤡
Nahhh Dosan character showed no development at all after 3 years but he grew up overnight, from ep15 to ep16. It wowded me, it the most sarcastic way
You probably watched the drama blindfolded or you are just simply too biased
@@videomester99 yup forget to take the blindfold off till now
*I came to the conclusion in the last two episodes that it wasn’t really Dal-Mi that I wanted to end up with Jipyeong. I just wanted HIM to be happy and have someone see the value in him. I thought they’d shoehorn in him with In-Jae and it would’ve made a bit of sense. Especially with her wearing all white at the very last scene.*
*Thank you for pointing out the crying!!
Dalmi was asked again in ep 15 why does she like Nam Do-San and she said that she doesn't need a reason why she likes him. Ngl I hated that line.
I thought he’d end up with big sister too! They were closer in age and experience.
Dosan’s character is so flawed. He is such a manipulative sad boy and his immaturity is even comparable to to those of antagonists. But one thing that this series do is that it depicts reality. In reality, no matter how perfect or likeable you are it doesn’t guarantee you getting the girl. And sometimes, the girl would even choose your rival for no logical reason at all.
true, it's sad really. Jp just ends up alone
He is not the most perfect anything, he is really mean and talks in a very aggressive way, he treats people really bad. Jp dosent deserve Dalmi bc he never makes a move to be with her
@@mjcbk lmao, "He is really mean"
In the real world that's the person who wins, the one that takes risks and does everything with his heart (like dosam did in the series)
(My mother tongue is spanish; sorry for the bad grammar)
yea, i couldnt understand why writer PHR made JiPyeong character perfect only to make him 2nd lead. 😥
Thank you for making this! I still can't get over how dirty the writer did Han Jipyeong. He deserved much better!
That part felt really refreshing for me 😅
As for Jipyong, I think his main storyline is about learning to open up to the people around him.
I love your insights!!! I totally agree with you!!! I almost did not finish this drama because I don’t like how the story flowed in the end.
Jipyeong always be the lead in myheart 😘. Thank you for this vid❤
Gah I am STILL not ok about this 😭
I knew it! Good thing I didn't waste anymore time finishing this. I totally agree with your video.
Your analysis is so RIGHT!! Spot on!! It was very disappointing that Han Ji Pyeong was just like “set aside” later on in the drama..
Haaay we all love Han Jipyeong! Such a remarkable character!
@@RiceSquad 😊👊☺ I know, right?
@@mjcbk I rly can't see y she will likes NDS. Even SDM can't think of a reason to like/choose him
Lol, the do san in the letters never existed in the first place. It's hilarious how you want a non-existent person to be with dal mi
just listening to your summary at the beginning makes you fall in love with HJP lol...then to see the adult version, how could we not fall in love and want him to win all that his heart desires? I will forever love and hate Start-Up
Jipyeong is the best boy
Han ji pyeong truly deserves the better ending. He's the main character ac to me that give his limelight to couples 😢
ahh now think I realized why I dropped this drama.
Exactly! It had such great potential. Sad to see it just waste away to obscurity
Will I guess when they hired the actors they all knew what the roles are. Who is lead & who is second lead. I do think the writers lost it from episode 8.
IKR
jess0099 the series should have ended on episode 9. Episode 9 has an 8.2 on Imdb then it went all downhill eventually with a 5 for episode 16.
Dosan might end up with Dalmi as main lead but for me Jipyeong is the main lead.
