“When I discovered Apollo interfaces, it changed my life.” - Che Pope
After contributing to the music industry for nearly 25 years and working with artists such as Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, and Aretha Franklin, Che Pope took on a unique challenge: record a killer, '60s style funk/soul track using the real-time processing and authentic analog emulations of the Apollo interface to record the masters of swing the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
The goal of this session was to track “Higher Ground” just as it would have been done in the ‘60s, so the choices Che made were true to the era, style, and recording technology. Che was able to use the natural room sound of the hall and microphone bleed to his advantage, giving the song a unique character that only this space and session could create.
When processing these tracks, Che Pope kept it simple. Adding ambience would have been unnecessary for obvious reasons, but Che decided to record with a UA 610-B Tube Preamp, Studer A800 Multichannel Tape Recorder, and a Fairchild 660 Limiter on each channel.

All you need is a world class band, room and $100k in mics and you too can sounds this good! All jokes aside, sounds great.
....to be fair, a lot of bands back in the 60s were recorder with just one mic...
Im just jealous. Apollo user here. Its a lovley and very clever showcasing.
apollo audio is all he used... cheap , and an apple laptop. you can do with excellent mics 200 bucks each , multiple. won't hear a difference... and his mics didn't cost 100 k LOL!!!
@@alexgregory1427 While the mics are likely quite a bit more than $200 each (and possibly approaching the $100k figure referenced above), and Apollo isn't really cheap, in an overall respect you're right! Wish this was a full concert! Thanks Universal Audio!
This is brilliant. It doesnt sound old, but its actually does not sound too modern. Really guys you impressed me. This is a very good job. A very nice place, a very good micing placement and a beautiful band. Huge respect to people who made this.
I love love love the feedback at the end. Confirmation to me that there’s definitely a soul in this Oh My Lord. 🙌🏿
Wonderful.
Superb sound - fantastic music.
Thanks for making my day. 😆👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽😆
Sounds so good! We cant wait to get to NOLA on easter!
Thank you for the Universal Audio Artist Sessions.
We love doing them! 👍
I don't care what hardware or software you used. This is joyful. You captured a great performance in a historic space. If different hardware or software was used, it would sound a little different but it would still be magical. Congrats!
One word, FANTASTIC
🥂
Love it, again great work UAudio!
That mic collection is unobtainium !!! It better be a good sound an it is ;)
the organ player was unreal... soo good
Muy bueno ❤🎉
Beautiful work!
Fantastic
Damn, now this is straight up soul music!!! Feeeeellllllin' IT! =)
Indeed!
Oh heck yeah! GOOD STUFF!!! :-)
Thank you awsome song
😍
Great ! Maybe too much room but it’s more cool this way
Awesome! UAD - best! Funk cool!
Pretty darn good
I wish that you guys would put this session for download for us Apollo users to check out the mix.
It sounds good , very good indeed but I think Che Pope's production has little to do with this sound/music and that's because of that still sounds very modern to me. The band is amazing .
pure fire
Had me movin'!
awsome
real smooth
Doesn’t sound 60’s at all. Sounds 90’s. Shhhhhhhhhmoooooookin.
Wow!❤️
KOO-MANGOO !!!
VERY NICE
👍
Big difference between the Coles and the RCA Mic. Maybe it the mic placement, it's is roomy!
Not really 60s sounding but damn that sounds great
that moment at 4:26 when the audio and video for the drums don't line up
B.S. This is my favorite New Orleans Jazz band of all time. I recognize the background or the Preservation Hall, where I have been many times. But this crap is not New Orleans or other Diixeland Jazz music. Shame on the Preservation Hall for this disgrace.
