I bet it was her cancer diagnosis. The timing seems right. Later on, when Kathryn Joosten (Mrs Landingham) went on to play Karen on Desperate Housewives, that character died of cancer. Miss Joosten died 20 days after the series finale of DH.
Did Mrs. Landingham died before or after Zoe’s kidnapping? That was Sorkin’s last episode. Did she want out of her commitment to TWW twenty episodes in the three seasons that she was “on”?
That special sadness you get in cars going to a funeral and then that brief melancholic sadness on the way to the grave. People try distract you like the wife does here but its best to just hold their hand and keep quiet. When the mourners want to talk they'll talk.
@@MearnieToonYes, Abby was mourning Mrs. Landingham, but for Jed, it was much more personal. His relationship with her went back to his school days, and it seems she’d been his primary assistant for decades.
I loved this episode but the one thing that I always questioned was this.. Unless Jed pulled some strings as POTUS how did she get a funeral in the National Cathedral?? She was just his secretary not a Senator or a Head of state.
If you live or I believe work?? in the parish you can get married and have a funeral service in St Paul’s Cathedral in London (not buried though!) so it’s likely that the rules are going to be the same anywhere.
But what does Jed have? She was his " big sister", his confident, and his friend. Yes he has Abbey and the girls and his White House staff, by Mrs Landingham had been a part of his life for thirty or forty years.

Because in the episode right after Leo’s funeral, Josh goes out to LA to surprise Sam. If he’d seen Sam a few days before, the callback to how Josh originally got Sam to join the Bartlet campaign wouldn’t have worked. They should have had Sam say something to Josh about how he was sorry to have missed Leo’s funeral, maybe saying he was out of the country or something.
Love this series, but as a former Catholic myself I was always bothered by Bartlett’s faith. People as intelligent and well educated as Jed and Abby Bartlett would be have been atheists.

It wasn’t an official state funeral. It was a regular one that happened to take place at the National cathedral, and Bartlet wanted to attend.
