CLIP DESCRIPTION:
To trick the British forces on the battlefield, the militia retreats over the hill where the Colonial army is waiting to fire.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the director/producer team responsible for such sci-fi blockbusters as Independence Day, Stargate, and Godzilla, take a step back in time with this drama set during the American Revolution. Farmer Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) was born and raised in South Carolina, and fought bravely during the French-Indian wars. But since the death of his wife, Benjamin has renounced violence and quietly tends his crops, raising his seven children alone. In 1776, over Benjamin's objections, his oldest son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) joins the fight against the British. Gabriel returns from battle seriously wounded, with Lord General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) calling for his arrest. A skirmish breaks out on Benjamin's plantation, and one of his children is killed as Gabriel is captured by Col. Tavington (Jason Isaacs) and sentenced to hang. Benjamin sets aside his vow of pacifism and rescues Gabriel; with the help of his former comrade-in-arms Harry Burwell (Chris Cooper), the father and son form a regiment of Carolina patriots whose cunning and ruthlessness make them heroes among the colonists -- and wanted men by British troops. Loosely adapted from the true story of Francis Marion and filmed on location in South Carolina, The Patriot was the first feature film made with the cooperation of the Smithsonian Institute, who advised the producers on historical accuracy. Joely Richardson also stars as Charlotte, Benjamin's sister-in-law who helps him care for the children.

The funny thing was that, in reality, Tarleton (the guy Tavington was based on) was the overall commander of the British present during this battle.
Tarleton wanted to be known for his brutality not his fighting...
In the movie, yes. In reality, he was actually a brilliant strategist and this was just a case of being overconfident.

Hands down the best revolutionary war video ever made. It’s rare you find a movie where every character has a purpose, motive, and is well acted. Still watch it today.
Was one of my favorite movies as a kid (and the OG Star Wars triology)
Extremely enjoyable to watch but hesitant to give it that specific praise considering that fun and spectacle were the only goals rather than historic accuracy at all.
You're either crazy or stupid. This movie is so full of historic inaccuracies it makes my head spin.
Great movie, but pure fiction. The real war was extremely divisive and nasty, colonial Americans killing fellow colonial Americans. There were about as many colonial Americans who wanted to remain part of Britain as those who wanted independence.

The tactics portrayed in this battle were actually historically accurate, i love when Hollywood war films show the tactical side of a battle in a "Film" version. Not hit me over the head with history like some films.
No planes!
What happens to the American regulars who stood their ground during the retreat?
So does that make up for the rest of the movie bein a complete joke history/plot wise? lol
It is a little misleading. If there was a bayonet charge, the lines would have certainly been together in the event that they encountered infantry, such as in the movie, and could react to it.

If Tavington did that on a regular basis, it's a wonder he wasn't court martialed for insubordination. As seen in this scene, coming into a battle at the wrong time can make a very big difference in the outcome.
If he hadn't been killed then, he might have been after the war was over.
@@rachelsheppard9122 Read the book "Swamp Fox". It details the real life atrocities of Banstere Tarlton (The real Tavington). He was only 26 years old at the time and a complete bloodthirsty SOB. It's fascinating that they paid the extras to use real bullets to capture a more authentic feel during the taping of these scenes, simply remarkable!
real bullets ?..nonsense
Fairly impressive for farmers with pitchforks.
@MegaProjectpat , who's fault was that?
@MegaProjectpat , not the colonists fault the British didn't have the stomach for it, look at Marye's Heights, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Chancellorsville. What? Do you have a better answer? I can guarantee there were more instances of Father against son, brother against brother in that one.
@MegaProjectpat They still deployed some of Britain's best units however and were at their peak over 50,000 strong. Units like Queens Own Rifles, Coldstream Guards, A handful of Scottish Regiments, Hessians, Royal Dragoons, etc. I wouldn't say a far cry.
@@seanwalters1977 Continental armies were simply un-used to fighting this way....The French lost to the Brits and Spanish irregulars too....because armies designed for regimental discipline can't think and respond flexibly against an opponent operating on a fluid basis, ie, combining irregular tactics with regular tactics.

I love the contrast of the Militia members to the Colonial troops, when they fall back and that huuuuuge volley just starts ripping them apart. Then the Militia kneel in front of the Colonial troops and fire another volley. Its just seems so heroic. A normal man, without strict military training but had drilled here and there was now elbow to elbow with professional troops and his fellow countrymen to fight off the same foe. The contrast in Uniform, and how they fight its so empowering, I will forever love this movie.
its hollywood nonsense
@@TheBlueCream It's pretty close in its essence to what actually happened during the battle. The feigned retreat to set up an encirclement by the regulars, counting on the British to see the militias as undisciplined and so proceed into a reckless charge actually happened.

Without them, giving orders to a bunch of people standing in line formation becomes trickier what with the canons and crackling muskets and the dying and all the cacophony of war.
This Tavington is really Tarleton (who famously gave no quarter to the defeated and unarmed American soldiers, and cut them mercilessly when they were begging him for mercy). In real life he escaped with the departing ship from Yorktown. The movie took care of that slip; it killed him as a patriot wanted him to.
Tarleton's escape did him little good. Due to his reputation for cruelty, plus some bloody-minded quotes from him that were published later in the press, he was socially ostracized back in England and his military career was thwarted. He was effectively tarred with the same brush as the turncoat Arnold and the major Tory military leaders, including those who'd commanded Native American auxiliaries. Each of these was popularly accounted "successful enough on the battlefield, but not a gentleman." PS -- The Delaware-raised Patriot partisan leader and army scout MAJ Allen McLane was twice the man Tarleton was.
Much appreciated for this bit of information ℹ️ thank you 😊
Me Gibson's character hunted native Americans for sport
@@50zcarsman Thats only partially true when he went back to England he served in parliament every year up to 1812 with the exception of only one year. Was eventually promoted to a full General by 1812 held two more commands in Ireland and England and finally in 1815 was made a Baronet followed in 1820 by being made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Bath. Don't know that you call that being tarred and feathered really. Especially since he was considered a prominent Whig politician despite his reputation as a Rake.
You mean after the patriots used the surrender as an excuse to take a shot at him right
Animal Mother was a British traitor in his past life...
A third of the American population at the time was pro British
The guerrilla campaigns in the southern colonies were absolutely essential. It tied up Cornwallis and his army for a good chunk of the war. If they had been able to march north and join Howe, that combined army would have rolled over Washington and the Continental army in New England. As it was, Washington could pick his spots to engage Howe on his terms and to his advantage. Once they showed they could beat the English Army on land, that was the catalyst to get the French to commit their navy to blockade the English and commit their officers to train the Americans and support the army economically. Then it was all over but the shooting at that point.
Yeah, the proper British Army couldn't handle it that their foes wouldn't stand still in ranks and get shot at like a professional soldier. They didn't stoop to the level of shooting people from the tree line, ambushes, shooting officers first, and other ways the militias came up with to stand up the most powerful army in the world. One of the reasons they lost.
@@shawnheidingsfelder8179 Almost sounds like you are pissing on the militia. British soldiers were no shining angels themselves.
Tavington would have been right at home at the Gestapo/SBU or the Azov Battallion.
That satisfaction moment when you see the Brits running into the troops that were waiting behind the hill :)
The same they later did with the french
As a both US and Polish citizen, both the underdogs in their past, I feel special satisfaction watching those scenes of the British defeat. Absolutely love it🔥❤👊🎯
As a half Pole half Brit I regret to inform that not only is this film very inaccurate and insulting, our history is very different. The British never committed any of the atrocities than the Prussians or Russians did during the partitions or 123 years of occupation.
I suggest a video by the channel History buffs about this film.
@@bears9055
Yeah, this film also doesn't show Washington trying to go toe-to-toe with the British and losing sorely. The hit-and-run tactics really were what won us our independence. Without them, we couldn't compete. Washington had to learn that mistake the hard way. Too many victories in a row and not enough discipline to understand that it doesn't mean you're invincible. Ego is the destroyer of empires and loser of wars.
@@bears9055 actually if u read n go to battle fields especially this one is very accurate I was just at cowpens when brits did this they were finished at this point over the hill
This is why never chase the enemy on retreat and most likely it may be a trap .. but the British Cavalry Commander was soo angry to chase after and lost . Rrong move ....
Special edition ha true
It's often extremely important to chase down retreating enemies, the Union failing to decisively crush the Confederacy after a couple couple early victories probably added an extra 4 years to that war for example. Just gotta suss out whether it's a trap or not
Note when the Americans win its victorious music when the Brits win it sounds like Darth Vader stepped into scene
Amazing line battle at a distance of ten feet between each other lmao
U know, when he hacked that last person in anger, revealed his personal capability to protect his own
Banastre Tarleton was very competent, went on to be the MP for a very Conservative Liverpool and brought a hell of a lot of trade. The irony was that the Empire in the 1800s when untouchable didn't see the use in taking back the Eastern areas when far superior.
Mind you, what else do you expect from a film released for 4th July with inaccuracies. Still a fun film.
But was he a sadistic psycho in real life?
My favourite part of the film, love watching large scale battles from this era. I do wonder if those regulars at the front with the malitia would of been told they were being hung out to dry when they retreating.
There's probably more bashing us Brits than actual historical accuracy but still an enjoyable film.
its rubbish
This is John Williams score The Patriot, Directed by Roland Emmerich. From The Director of Independence Day, and John Williams, the Composer of Star Wars.
1:30 damn i really liked that one.
I especially love how they took careful attention to historical detail to include the "Don't tread on me" flag from 1776! Truly the best historical depiction of the Revolutionary War there is!
Combat Tactics ... by retreating, you draw the enemy into the trap... The Art of War.
I love this revolutionary war movie
Эпическая сцена 💯
the musket fire is probably more accurate than real life, but also gotta remember that a musket fires a giant projectile by today's standards. If it hits, its doing a lot of hurt.
Who learns?
This film is beyond a masterpiece I watched it as a kid and it truly made me appreciate our countrys history and what it took for America to be what it is
It’s a historical joke. Go read a book kid.
It’s not historical accurate and made the British army look bad. Thought I read or heard somewhere they wouldn’t try to kill an officer’s family to get them to engage in combat
This was my top favorite scene of the Patriot movie and sadness scene is where arrived at martins homestead Tavington gave his order to the British commander and his troops to burn down the house abd killing the wounded Patriot militia soldiers when the music played and after the British marched away music was beautiful after Martin lay down his son Thomas head on ground shows a bag of tin metal tiny soldiers to melted down to make musket balls muskets guns and pistols of history are amazing to own as a collection.
The British never committed such atrocities, it's made up for the movie.
Would have looked cooler if Tavington and the dragoons were riding on motorcycles instead of horses. I thought of this since 2000
feigned retreat, brilliant, also used by Ghengis Khan and William the Conqueror.
And Zatoichi every few seconds.
Not entirely sure William MEANT to pull that particular trick though.
Why cant Hollywood make more American revolution movies???

When you lose it chasing an army, just to be ambushed by a second army next to it.
This was supposed to be the battle of Cowpens. But no mention of General Daniel Morgan. Great effects and battle scene just the same. This is the battle that forced Cornwallis to Yorktown.
It was actually a mix of the two, Guildford Courthouse and Cowpens. The film makers basically just used the army size and commanders from Guildford Courthouse the only thing they took from from Cowpens was an American victory.
And also the tactic of the militia of a decoy, they sort of made Gibson do what he did like he was telling his men to fire 2 shots
Actually, Morgan was mentioned briefly, just not seen in that movie.
you know when he tells Nathaniel Greene and the other fictional character that they under estimate their militia? What are you suggesting Ben? I suggest we use that (patriot music) I know you guys have sacrificed alot, all i want you to do is fire to shots then retreat. That was a tactic Daniel Morgan came up with
Right. A couple things they left out are that at Cowpens, the militia didn't retreat so as to mask their own second line, as here, and they didn't do it at a run. They filed off in fairly good order around a low hill instead, and were lost to British sight for awhile -- thus enhancing the shock of the British as they crested that hill and stared into the musket-barrels of the re-formed militia. Also, the British commander was encouraged to charge b/c there was a rain-swollen, unfordable creek behind the rebels -- so he thought he had them trapped, and could capture the entire enemy force. But Morgan counted on that water obstacle, too, to keep the militia from running off as usual, and thus get them to concentrate on executing the rather complex scheme of maneuver and fire he set for them. There's no similar motivation for a frontal assault here; it just looks like glory-hunger on the part of the British.
