You can tell this from the vase in Tyr's temple where Kratos is depicted as the Greek God of War. Tyr went missing around 150 years prior to GoW (2018). It could actually be longer since there is no telling when Tyr went to the realm with the Greek pantheon.
Tyr went there not only before his disappearance but also before the destruction of greece, maybe after the death of ares when kratos was the god of war.

He had a hold of the sword for long enough for a majority if not all of the falling hand to be negated. The only thing that really hurt Kratos was the weight of the hand causing compression with the damaged pieces of armor with his skin. Also he is well known to survive massive fatal injuries for minutes after they are received before his body gives up. Its fair to assume kratos was already dead anyways just his injuries weren't massive enough to kill him right then and there.
