We had this amazing TV new back when I was a teenager and we used it for at least 10 years in Australia. The picture was alway great and digital SD TV looked amazing and vibrant compared to analogue. We got this tv in about 2003 because the new plasmas were too expensive at the time and digital tv had just come out so it was a great selling point. The tv came with a single scart plug which split out into component and normal composite video which we plugged into a DVD player with component. Later on we got a scart to scart plug and connected the digital foxtel box to the tv, can't remember which mode it ran in - foxtel picture quality in SD was terrible compared to free to air. I also connected and played a lot of Xbox 360 on it via the component cables the first gen had and also Nintendo wii with an aftermarket component output cable. At one point the TV failed to turn on - we got it repaired - power supply replaced by a local shop. In the end my parents upgraded in 2013 to a Samsung 42" LCD which only lasted about 6 years before the backlight went bad. So then it sat unused for a few years before they put it out for hard rubbish - it probably still worked. I'd love to find another one day as it makes DVDs look awesome as well as retro games.
Interesting localisation of a UK/ European set for the Australian market by omitting RGB functionality. FYI: Sony UK are based in South Wales (Bridgend/ Pencoed). I believe they manufacture the Raspberry Pi devices there, nowadays. The PCMCIA is a CI (Common Interface) slot to accept a CAM (Conditional Access Module), which would allow decryption of pay TV services. The MODEM functionality may be linked to this (interactive services, on-demand movies, sporting events, etc). I think the AV2 RGB output was possibly for connection of a DVD recorder to allow recording of the TV's digital tuner.
I use a KD-34XBR960 for my ED and HD console games and some PC usage and these also have a similar RGB selection in the service menu that lets it take RGsB over the YPbPr jacks. There's no region override but you can hide the service OSD. It's probably a leftover from factory but it's interesting that it seems it was reused for the AUS models and also showed up in a similar form on a set like this.
I think a better way to test if it's 100Hz or not besides the 15kHz whine would be to check different shutter settings from the camera, point it at the TV and see the effects. I have had the zapper work on a 100Hz TV occasionally, so I don't think it's a very reliable test.
Great detective work, Rob! According to this Wikipedia article, the BL country code refers to Saint Barthélemy (which I believe is a French territory) - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2
You should have shown the subwoofers, the stars of this tv!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..... I would use this tv to bang songs if I had it. This is what subs are for
Hi Rob. This is very similar to the one we have. Ours is kd-32dx40. Didn’t get to show you when you popped over a few years ago. I may even try the RGB change as we currently use a transcoder for the rgb/yuv :(
Thanks Rob! I just bought one of these and your instructions were incredibly helpful. Edit: does anyone know how to get back into the service menu after changing the region? Pressing 5 now turns the tv on.
@@rgbrob its tricky to get into for sure. Ive got test suite on the screen now and im about to adjust geometry. 11000 hours on it. It was a cool 50 bucks with factory stand. BIG TV but im happy to own it. Thanks for recommendation!
I'm picking up a similar model tonight but without a remote. Not sure how i'm going to be moving it on my own, thing is shaped like a pyramid laying on its side and weights about as much as one.
Even with those 2 shutter speeds its not always possible to get a steady picture. I think a camera with and adjustable shutter speed that can go into 1 or 2 decimal points would help to synchronise very closely with the tvs actual refresh rate (NTSC 59.94 interlaced fields per second for example).
Great video Rob. I've got what looks to be a slightly later model Sony KD-32NX200AUS and it has three scart ports with two of them YUV scart and the other s-video. Looking at the manual the UK model has the same ports as rgb scart so it looks similar to this tv. It has a different service menu so the same trick doesn't work though. I've tried to turn a few things on and off but no luck! Just wondering if you've heard of my model and have any ideas?
I've owned around 12 kd sony consumer grade tvs form the usa. All our kd sets run component and need a converter for rgb to component. Also none of our kd sd sets are widescreen. There are widescreen kd sets but they are not sd. I think what you call a 100 hz set is similar to a hd set in the usa. I have owned one before and did not like it--input lag and lcd like picture quality. I would love to have a 32 inch widescreen. I watch a lot of movies on my crt and 4/3 tubes are not ideal. I usually crop the image into 6/9 using vlc but a widescreen set would probably be better. However I am literally using a 36 inch kd set as I type this (crt emudriver) and the added tube size probably makes up for the lack of widescreen. I'm guessing that a 32 inch widescreen is comprable to a 27 inch 4/3 when 4/3 gaming. On the other hand, a 36 inch 4/3 tv is probably comparable to 32 inch widescreen when viewing widescreen content, with respect to viewable area. I am surprised you are not more impressed with the picture quality. The kv3xx series of kd sets in the usa are comparable to low end pvms with respect to horizontal resolution, however they are the best kd sets. The inferior kv1x, 1xx and 2xx series are almost as good. I have noticed that some kd tvs such as the kv 36fv15 have weird edge enhancement features hard coded into some of the "picture mode" presets. On these tvs it is by far the best to use the "movie" and "standard" presets and turn the contrast, brightness and sharpness down. You might want to give this a try. The presets probably have a different name in Australia but watch out for that edge enhancement.
Hi rob, thanks for the video I have the opportunity to buy this tv, is it worth it for xbox, GameCube and ps1 / 2 light guns also comes with original stands

Hey Rob, just a question about RGB mode on this tv, will it do 4:3 aspect ratio or does it force you to stay in 16:9? Sorry if this was answered previously.
Hey guys. I am in need of some help. So, I'm from Australia and I have been searching for a high quality PVM (preferably Sony Trinitron) for quite some time now. My dream monitor would be a Sony Trinitron 20L5. Although at this point I can settle with any Sony Trinitron that is decent. On the rare occasion there will be a PVM listing on Ebay, Gumtree and there was one time I saw one on Facebook Market Place, but completely overpriced and not even a good monitor. These are the only Australian Market websites that I know of, please let me know if there are any others. I suppose they have become more sought after as time goes on and people tend to hold onto them. Anyway, if anyone out there could give me some advice on where to look and who to contact, it would honestly mean the world to me. I desperately need one of these monitors... Cheers! :)
Would be great if someone came up with a bypass of the processor and could change some components to double the scan rate so we could actually display 1080p on the HD CRTs. Horizontal resolution isn't actually 1920 though, I think the super fine pitch XBR is only around 1440 or so horizontal from reviews and specs I've read in the past.
The labels upside down so you guys in Australia could read it
That CRT is such a beauty. Glad to see even more wonderful CRT content, particularly with the relative rarity of widescreen CRTs.
I have the Japan-only version of it. KV-32DX750.
It has a multi-av port for using a Playstation in full RGB.
I didn't think I'd watch this video all the way through. It was satisfying to watch you work out how you got RGB going!
So thorough, and the tip on how to switch to RGB is great. You're a legend :)
I wanted this tv so much when it launched!
Super happy you figured how to get it to boot with the YUV bit disabled, nice one!

Yes but can you get it to NOT stretch a 4:3 picture to a 16:9 frame? Sony calls this Auto 16:9 Enhancement and it's maddening.

You should wait ten secconds, inbetween turning electronics on and off, so that ALL of its capacitors have dissipated their voltage.
