I grew up fishing in Back Bay Virginia in the late 70s and early 80s. It was a world-class Bass fishery then before they started pumping salt water into it. I was back there a couple years ago and they had stopped the saltwater pumping and reintroduced Florida strain bass and the fishery is coming back. Those creeks you are fishing bring back really good memories of casting baits up close to those grassy banks and Cyprus snags and having a big bass explode on them or retrieving Johnson's minnows over the milfoil beds.

So , I do not own one but based off your review and what I can see. Coming from me using an Autopilot 136. The autopilot 136 is what 4900? 4500 when I bought it. It does not come with a battery , which my Dakota Lithium battery at the time was 1200. 100 AH battery. That same battery is 699 now and prices of lithium are getting even cheaper. So today you would pay 5600 to have a Autopilot 136 with a 100 AH battery from Dakota Lithium with an 11 year warranty. That being said , I highly doubt the amperage usage of this PDL is as efficient as the Minn Kota , and its definitely not as versatile. So , I know you said its not a good comparison but if I'm buying a kayak from Old Town. I expect the higher priced kayak to be better in every way than the cheaper one. To me , this is a major fail for Old Town. No one that buys these kayaks should look at this kayak and say its an upgrade over the autopilot.
The EPDL comes with a battery but the whole thing is only a 1 year warranty , which includes the battery. With the Old Town Autopilot , its a 1 year warranty on the hull , and Dakota Lithium gives you an 11 year warranty on the battery. They are an American company and a very good to work with. Now , the Autopilot is a minn kota trolling motor , which means in the future , you may see upgrades to increase thrust , like a head replacement , or a lower unit replacement to go from 46 lbs thrust to say 50 or 55 , maybe even 60. Maybe a 24 volt system , two smaller form factor batteries in a single case with a 24 volt head for even more efficiency. The only thing the autopilot lacks is speed , over this model.
Looking at the EPDL , the most important factor for any fishing kayak , is the size of the usable space. Space you would use constantly. Almost any peddle system has one flaw , the drive is close to you and it takes up a large portion of the usable space. Wilderness Systems radar kayak is the least intrusive of this aspect , that is a peddle drive system where the drive slides straight up and pivots forward to lay down out of the usable space . Most peddle drive systems though are between 2000 to 3500 and some at 4000 if you are looking at Hobie. However , at 6 grand , peddle drive should not even be a thought. They should have never introduced a 6 grand peddle drive kayak , even a power assisted one. 4000 with a battery? more reasonable.
I'm sure the chair is comparable to the autopilot , if not the same one , the pockets on the sides , inside should not have that black plastic overtop the netting/pocket, you can not stick tall things in it , like fish grips , etc.
The Drive and how it clamps down to the kayak , if you get grass on the prop and have to clear it , anything you got beside that big hole is subject to be lost , forever , it should have a raised up lip around it to decrease the risk of losing baits or other expensive items. It should not be flush with the inside/bottom of the kayak. If that break away shatters , is that something that can be locked down again? or do you have to use a replacement? What is up with that?
The battery they give you , is a deep cycle , not 100 AH battery , more like 40 something. maybe 60.
My final thought is this. This kayak in Ok for 4 grand , but not for 6k. I compare it to Old Towns, used to be top model. Its about the same weight , only a little less. Smaller battery. Less usable space . Poorly managed compartments. Battery not as secure as a Old Town. Drive takes up much more space and heavier and less features but faster in use. Breakaway not reusable? ( not sure on this ). Go back to your statement , passing over fish to get to fish. The faster you are moving , the more likely you are to bypass fish. I see speed as more of a hinderance than a help. I go as fast as 3.6 mph in Oregon inlet which is some pretty damn crazy tides , and as slow as 2.4. I have no reason to go faster , I catch just as much fish if not more within 2 miles of the dock as the guys traveling for hours in the sound looking for fish. Spot lock keeps me still on everything 15 mph winds and tides in same direction , I barely ever get pushed off the spot.
Old Town wants to charge 6 k for a kayak? Ok fine , do another better version of the Autopilot. What does that mean? It does not mean much change but. Larger head and lower unit for thrust increase , maybe 24 volt options? Multiple engine sizes? Rear hatch access? Maybe slightly longer 14.6 version? Make the cabin space in front of the seated position a foot longer? Better hull design to have less resistance? Narrow the hull an inch or two? It could be a tad bit skinnier. That you could charge 6 grand for. Not this EPDL. Its not anywhere near 6 , not even close to doing what a Autopilot can for less with a 11 year battery warranty and larger battery.

I tested the epdl at the ICAST show and I own a PDL 106 and Autopilot 120. Nothing beats the autopilot 120 in my opinion. Spot lock alone is a game changer if you are a serious kayak fisherman plus all the other Minn Kota motor features like North lock.. I like the epdl top speed at 6mph though for sure 😁 I wish AP 120 would go little faster..

I feel like the whole point of a Kayak is so you can pick it up and walk to the water by yourself. Once you get into peddles and battery powered Kayaks it defeats the purpose IMO. Might as well just have a small boat and a trailer at that point and be more comfortable.

From what a wildlife biologist told me people were taking pictures or writing the numbers down and giving the numbers to friends or kids and calling it in multiple times for the rewards.

    • @EliasVFishing
      @EliasVFishing  9 месяцев назад +2

I think if you have a lot of spots that are some reasonable distance apart this makes a lot of sense. It’s also your preference of what has better fishability - a kayak or a boat. Also if you are chasing a lot of surface fish, striped bass, albies, mackerel, etc this is a top of the line kayak for that too.
If you are only fishing a mile or so from your access point and no reason to get to areas quickly - you probably won’t gain a whole lot. If you are going to cover three miles worth of stuff and want to bounce through stuff quickly and know there is lots of dead water in between this makes sense.
Yep it’s tighter than other kayaks I’ve been on. Will take getting used to what to do with fish. (More netting and leaving in the water going forward)

I’m a loyal old town fan boy but for me this kayak missed the mark. Proprietary only to the epdl big water and not plug and play with their other models. 6k+ after all said and done for it and I can’t even spot lock or swap the drive to other models is just a miss for me. I get the use for it and how people want the option to pedal and have the power but at 6k I feel like the market for this is super niche and they missed a giant target audience with it. I’ll stick with my ap and salty for pretty much the same price.

Always entertaining content. I know that area well and this time of year it’s relatively bug free. Amazing how that river system is so diverse in fish species. At some time of the year I’ll bet you can catch any fish in NC except trout and walleye. Would you mind telling what your outer suit is? Thanks for your work.

Those things are pretty cool. Would try and figure out how to get a trolling motor on it.

Not to be mean but a $6000 kayak is no longer a Kayak, it is an adult toy... no matter what the manufacturer says, there is nothing to justify that price, for a plastic boat whose basic construction costs is between $150 and $600 with all the additional hardware... This trend of $3k + kayaks has to stop as it is actually killing what the essence of kayak fishing was and reducing it to another place where wealthy adult males overspend just to flash their large discretionary spending accounts... Please stop promoting these manufacturer who are actively killing the sport. PLEASE STOP BUYING THESE BOATS, buy a real boat instead if you are going to spend that much.

Man I love fishing for big bowfin on light tackle. Let me know if you wanna get on some bigger ones. 28"+ January is one of my favorite times of year to fish for them, don't have to be up early fish from 10-3 when that water starts warming up the bite gets hot, can catch 30-50 a day with an average size of about 25" and biggest ones being close to 30"
