I will always write melodies starting with a bassline following my chord progression in 1/8th (or 1/16th if its a slower bpm song) alternating between the root of the chord and an octave above to give it movement. that movement makes it so much easier to create the melody arragement in my head and then the rest just falls into place as you go along.
Yea Ive done that for years as well. It also sounds very deamy which is cool. Ive shifted to using an init sound as im honestly lazy. But for beginners I do recommend a plain piano as not everyone knows which plucks are pure, and which are hard to hear :) But hell yeah dude, plucks with reverb is such a vibe!
I have full time job to survive. HAHA music doesn't pay the bills. Unless you have lots of fans willing to pay for your concerts. Maybe ill have higher chance if i make cheesy love songs in chines mandarin. -_-' but that I will never know.
A lot of people lose the enjoyment for making music the moment they start to view it as a bill paying aid. Make whatever you like man! Just be careful with the pressure :)

Oeh I used to do that as well, almost gives the reverse bass vibe which is easy to get you in the mood:)
When i make a melody, I always use a Pluck with a big reverb on it. Thats the way how I get the harmonics.
