What a great location! I looked it up on Google Maps. Very cool! Thanks for sharing, JP! I believe I'll be taking my 800 f/11 out for some Sandhill Crane action this winter for sure!

Awesome - I will be looking forward to it - too long of a focal length for your backyard blind. This little spot is so awesome and only about 20 minutes from home. The advantage is you really can get right down to ground level with them at the water. Thank you Phil. 🙏💖🤗

@@aarong2374 Yeah, I really enjoyed that. I have the R1 on rental order for December over the Christmas time holiday.... I wish they had put the R5II in the R3 size body - it would have been better overall I think. I like precapture but is it enough to upgrade to the R1?.🤗💖

I like that 800mm f11 as well. I was relying on the 100-400 but kept coming up short at one of my favorite parks, got the 800 and have no regrets.

I love this lens even with all its limitations. For wildlife, I think 800 is the prefect focal length for me. And 400 is just a bit too short for sure. 🙏💖🤗

Nice one, John. I have this and the 600mm and they are amazingly good value, especially for someone starting out on a tight budget. At the store I use in the UK, you can get both these plus an R7 and RF100-400mm - all new - for the equivalent of USD3200. I think that's a bargain. I also think the pelican is feeding, notice how it turns its head and then lunges. Apparently, that beak can hold up to 2.5 gallons of water with each dive. Not sure how it gets rid of it though....All the best

Thank you, thank you - it is such a fun lens. I watch them all come in for a landing and these all land that way. I was watching them feed in a group in San Diego this past week and the landing here is different. Awesome to watch no matter what they are doing. 🙏💖🤗

Malibu Lagoon, super place for shooting. Such a variety of birds and water dwellers! Neat to see your shots of the pelicans, and interesting that they land head first in the water. Clumsy looking and yet kind of graceful as they do a complete turn in the opposite direction. Like a pirouette (aka spinning top).
Thank you! - Gaylin, Ontario Canada

Thank YOU from southern California. I love watching them land. Some have said they are feeding when they land but they all see to land that way so I dont think so. Always love your positive attituded. I went out to a local wildlife refuge (Flint Hills in Kansas) but only saw some bigger birds off in distance ( too far away) and a small sparrow (got some pics) and woodpecker (too skirmish) with my RF800 and R8. Went for walk the next day just 1/2 mile from home down dirt road and saw more small birds than ever at the wildlife refuge. Need to take my camera on my more or less daily walks.

@JonnyPink65 I was out shooting with the R7 today at my friends bird hide and a European Buzzard landed right in front of me, they are a very shy raptor and the 100-500 F7.1 lens was ideal with its close focus. The 800F11 lens is ideal as a walk around lens in open habitats like wetlands. Its a great lens too for anyone starting wildlife photography. You don't need very expensive gear to get great shots, its about knowing how to use that gear in different conditions and field craft that makes a big difference too.

@@stephenbolger5925 Perfectly stated. There is nothing that is right for every single situation- everything has limitations. We as the photographers, have to work within those limitations and get the best we can with what we have. The 800 F11 is fun, but the 100-500 in my use and opinion really is the best option on the R7.... depending on the situation!! 🤗💖

Hello, good afternoon from Florida. I think you really take great photos. That always captures my interest when you post a video. I would like to add, although I could be wrong on this, that I believe when Pelicans take flight, and land in the same area, they are usually fishing. My thoughts on the typical head first dive.
