My first Welding Lathe made from a Old Bicycle

  • Back around 1998, I got a request to quote a job that involved welding 200 or so small round stainless steel parts.
I didnt have a welding lathe or even a turntable at the time...but I quoted the job anyway and got it.
The story was... was supposed to get 100 parts every month for several years. (seems like thats always the story to get you to quote lower) but I had heard that song and dance before so instead of stepping out and spending money on a welding turntable, I built my own DIY welding lathe turntable for these parts for the first order of 200 parts. I used an old bicycle, some drill chucks, and a cheap Kmart variable speed drill motor. see the full article here goo.gl/h7720K visit the store here goo.gl/P36UKS

We had a similar set up but used the armature and gear case of an 5" angle grinder, cranked by hand via a handle attached where the end bearing should be, we had a 4" 3 jaw chuck attached to it and just held it in the bench vise by a custom made flat bar handle instead of the stock round hand handle, worked a treat for over 12 years.

  • @RollingEasy

I've just set up a vertical version of what you've got there with the lathe's 4 jaw chuck pointing skyward. Its just a small turntable sat on top of a thrust bearing bolted to the very edge of the work bench. It centers pretty good and with a dial you can get almost .000 run out when it turns. And what turns it is a weight on a pulley on a cord that runs twice around the vertical axle and tied to the bench going past my hip. I move sideways and the load raises turning the table until I'm ready to weld and then I slowly ease away on my hip and the weight turns the table and jaws at a controlled speed and good enough for non stop welding..... But all your gear is so much better. I never mastered TIG in heavy industry as in boiler tube welding on powerhouse site construction. Just could never co ordinate the wire and the hand piece enough to get good looking smooth welds like you've just shown. Congratulations.

necessity is the mother of all invention.... and it only had to work once, right?
another trick for thin stuff. not that that has anything to do with what your doing here. put a 't' in the gas line and run it to a strip of sheet bent so there is a gap for the gas to fill and duct tape it to the back of your thin sheet being joined. this will keep the back side from burning if your a little too hot . works great for .034 sheet ( stainless) may have to use a couple cfm more gas so both the back of the weld and the torch get enough gas to shield best.
love seeing stuff like this! good work!

Since you already own the lathe you might use it to rotate a rollout wheel if needed in the future. Your gear reduction would have no problem turning light to medium work. A cheap or free way to get a bearing and flange combo would be to use the front wheel bearing and flange assembly from a 4x4 or front wheel drive car. Get the stub axle too. RUclips videos on rollout wheels and pics from welding forums may inspire your design.
