    In 2019, Brian Flores and Miami’s defense were dead last in the NFL by DVOA. In 2020, the Dolphins jumped to 11th overall and 6th in pass DVOA. They went from giving up 35 points per game to just 21. All this improvement was spurred by the fronts and pressure packages from Brian Flores and great secondary play from Xavien Howard and new addition Byron Jones. Miami had one of the highest blitz and pressure rates in the NFL with almost 10% of their blitzes coming from a Cover 0 look with no deep help. They also brought five or more rushers on over 1/3 of their defensive snaps. They weren’t without flaws - especially in the run game, but the defense came up big without the big names to back it up.

    The average runstopping game and issue sealing the edges is exactly why we they traded for Benadrick McKinney and drafted Jaelan Phillips; to help solve those issues. Flores saw the holes in his defence and went out to solves them asap. The LB core last year as pretty middle of the road but picking up better depth pieces in Duke Riley and Brennan Scarlett will help with that. Both can play the run better than what was there last year and are also pretty solid in coverage too

      Really excited for Phillips. Frees up a lot of things on defense if he plays up to his potential and gives the Dolphins someone that can win a one-on-one

    Stressing how they did this without a premier edge rusher...like prospect Jaelan Phillips...is making me a little uneasy 😬

    • @WeeklySpiral
      @WeeklySpiral  3 года назад +3

      If Phillips pans out, they're going to be tough. Having a guy that can win a one-on-one will do wonders for that front and allow Flores to back off from bringing the all-out blitz looks while still getting home.

    Vikings fan here. Love the Flores hire. I would rather get burned deep once in awhile than burned short-and-medium on every play under Ed Donatell. I don't mind losing with an aggressive defensive gameplan if it's at least fun to watch.

    U def have to have elite cover corners to run anything similar to this. And the Fins have exactly that with Howard and Jones...

    • @WeeklySpiral
      @WeeklySpiral  3 года назад +1

      100%. Biggest reason that Xavien has some leverage with his holdout deal. If Flores wants to continue to bring heat, they need those guys on the back end.

    • @WeeklySpiral

      Definitely a lot of competition in the division. If they keep playing like they did on defense, they've got some nice weapons on offense now as well with Waddle, Gesicki, and Parker. Exciting time to be a Dolphins fan

    So I believe that with the additions made to the defense (specifically Jevon Hollan > Bobby McCain) that this defense will be even harder to pass against. Holland is a better run defender, tackler, & cover man than McCain was. If this team can play with a lead, watch out!

    • @WeeklySpiral
      @WeeklySpiral  3 года назад +2

      Definitely not a team you want to play against from behind. If Phillips brings some juice in the pass rush, it’ll be a nightmare for teams. Really need Xavien Howard on the back end though. So as long as that gets ironed out, there’s huge potential there.

    High Risk. Absolutely. Allen smoked the Dolphins in both games. He only struggled for just over a quarter of the second game.

    • @WeeklySpiral
      @WeeklySpiral  3 года назад +1

      Part of the danger for sure. Allen tore apart 0 looks all last year. Surprised the Dolphins didn’t change things up a little more against him.
      If you want to take a look at how they did it, I made a video after their Week 17 game.

      Exactly why I think we’ll be better. In the beginning of the season, fitz was turning the ball over left and right which is a big reason why we lost several games. Tua didn’t turn the ball over like fitz which will be huge for us
