I replace the fan and a year later the same thing happens again. The replacement fan paperwork said, no software update needed. So I didn’t do the software update. Here I am a year later and it’s happening again. I’m wondering if the pc board registers the fan (like it does with water filter bar codes) and it expires. Now GE parts says they no longer make the software update module. What’s a handyman DIYer to do?
This video saved us from having to buy a new refrigerator, an investment we didn't wish to make at this time. The video is clear and to the point. THANKS!
BOSS! Thanks for this video!!! I'd not have pulled off the back cover for fear of breaking it, but seeing how you were able to tug on it, flex it, and it not break, gave me courage. My model was a tad different - the rubber gasket was attached to the fan with rubber grommets and did not encompass the whole fan. On mine a steamer was not necessary, though there was some ice build up that a gentle pound with my fist broke up nicely. Everything else, screw removal/location was exactly as you showed in the video and I appreciate that you didn't cut the video for items like removing the evap cover. When I looked the fan part up for my model, PFE28KSKGSS, it said a software update might be needed, and the local parts distributor said he saw that too on his screen, but when he's sold this fan to DIYers and repair contractors, no one has ever asked for the software update module and no one has called back to say there was a problem with the fan that required the software update module. Total time: took me about 20 minutes to disassemble the fridge and remove the old fan. Took me about another 20 minutes to move the grommet/gasket to the new fan and reinstall all the pieces (and clean them - the crumbs that got down there - YUK!). Total time to fix, for me, about 40-45 minutes. I'm a novice appliance repair DIYer. Have fixed my washer, dryer, replaced a built-in Microwave, removed oven doors, and now, I can add fridge repair to my virtual resume.
Thank you. We noticed the fridge was 61 degrees yesterday. I found this video, diagnosed the problem, ordered the fan from Amazon, had it delivered today before noon for under $40 and 45 minutes later we are back in business.
Thanks, worked like a charm. I purchased a replacement fan off of Amazon for $60. Cut the cooling off a day before working on it which allowed the ice buildup to melt and drain. Replacing the fan was a breeze. I had to pull the fridge out to clear out the drain pan at the bottom of the refrigerator. I was able to suck out at least 5 cups using a turkey baster.
This video popped up on my playlist a week after I fixed my fridge for this exact issue. Only additional advice I can give is to definitely melt all the ice in the drain area before removing the cover over the coil. I cracked the styrofoam around the crisper fan (left corner) mistakenly thinking there was no ice build up. You’d be surprised how much can accumulate.
Thank you for this video. I did exactly what you recommended. Found the replacement part at the local appliance store for $70. The replacement, including defrosting the coil with a steamer, took about 45 minutes. Fridge took about 12 hours to get back to 37 degrees. Saved me at least $150!
This video was a GODSEND. Exact issue happened with my fridge and I was able to fix just by following step by step. Thank you so much! My fridge has been working the last month again since replacing the evaporator fan like this video said. (The only issue I had some trouble with was ordering the right fan because I think the original fan model number is discontinued. But after some digging I found the right one. But that's not the channel's fault lol. Just letting anyone reading this know that you might have trouble with that)
I would like to thank you and commend you and your channel. My wife suggested watching you and with your help, you just saved us from buying a new frig for 2700 dollars. My wife trusted me enough to listen and your tutorials were spot on. All I needed was to replace a 65 dollar fan. May God Bless you everyday.
You probably saved me at least $200 on a service visit. Ordered the fan on Amazon and had it switched out in less than 15 minutes. This video was well worth the few bucks I sent you via PayPal. Now my beers are cold again. Cheers.
Thanks for sharing this. Our refrigerator was cold on the bottom and almost 60 degrees on top. I found that fan and suspected it was the problem, but called an independent appliance repair guy. I told him what I thought about the evaporator fan and he immediately shuts me down with "Oh no that's not it". He checks it out and tells me to unplug it for 24 hours and plug it back in and get back to him. Of course that does nothing to help and he basically tells me he doesn't know what to do! That's when I found this video. I called a local appliance dealer and ordered this fan for $80. It arrived the next day and the fridge was back up and running after 15 minutes of work.
I have the same issue in the last few days, the deli drawer is ice cold, bottom fridge is also cold and the upper is warm. I actually noticed on the left side the upper fan/air exit not blowing any air and the bottom one is fine. so did that video fixed your issue or it's something else? thank you.
I’m going through this problem right now. I replaced the middle evaporator fan and it was blowing some cold air right after but it seems to have stopped. I noticed the other fan on the left in the cover wasn’t spinning but that looks like it feeds the lower drawer. Were you able to fix your problem?
I am glad I came across your video. Can’t get a repairman to fix my fridge. I ordered the part from your link and will be installing it myself. Save a few hundred buckaroos this way. Will keep you updated.
Thank you so much!! We watched the video and we ordered the evaporator fan. It shipped fedex and we had it in two days. We replaced it today and the fan started working right away. Fridge went from 59 degrees back down to 38 in two hours. You are a life saver- thank you!!!
Another post thanking you for the video. I picked up a 2015 Cafe for free bc it was icing up and not getting cold up top. A $30 replacement from Amazon and this $2000 fridge is good as new. Best garage fridge ever. lol
Great video! Had the same problem. Amazon had the part on the porch the next morning, and the repair took about 30 minutes. Fridge is working great again!
Great video, super helpful. Ordered a fan off Amazon at 2 AM was able to get it today by 10 PM and had it installed in about 15 minutes thanks for making this video you saved me a call to a technician!
thanks so much for the video! The evaporator fan was exactly the issue with my GE refrigerator and it is back working like a charm. Rather than purchasing a steamer as shown, I used my wife's' hairdryer on warm mode, which worked well, even through the steamer would have worked better :). 5 stars!!
I have had bad luck with my GE French door model. All within a 1 year period. First the ice machine crapped out and had to be replaced. A few months later the fan you are replacing in this video needed to be replaced. Finally a few months after that the freezer was not at temp. Received bad news that I had a refrigerant leak. The repairman topped it off and said let's see how long it lasts. Three months later back to the same problem. He says the repair will be very costly and the fridge is 13 years old so I might want to start looking for a new one. Only 13 years of life on this GE. Funny thing is my old 30 year old GE is in the garage still working fine. Sorry to have to disagree with you on liking this GE model.
Thanks you for posting this video. My fridge was at 57 one day and noticed a fan sound that was laboring a bit. Thought it was coming from the freezer then I thought it was the condenser fan. Both fans were fine. Finally after looking for awhile I found the right video for the right fridge and save myself $200 easy maybe more. Got the fan from amazon for $40 and the rest is history. Thanks!!
Excellent video. I repaired my Fridge in about an hours time. I did purchase the steamer you suggested and that sped up the process. Thanks for saving me $$$$$ on a service call.
Great video... at one point I almost gave up and called a serviceman. Luckily, he did not return the call. It is fairly hard for the back panel to come out. However, I continued my effort using my cloth steamer... finally it came out! Took around 40 min to complete the task... had to run to local appliance parts store to get the part.
Wow, thanks! The fan in my fridge is a bit different, but the tip on the steamer was awesome. Without that I probably would have stopped there because I couldn't get the panel opened and would have called someone. If you have a DFE28JMKFES, the fan part number is WR60X26866.
Thank you for this video. Thought I was going to have to buy a new refrigerator until I saw the video. Replaced a bad fan and now it’s running like new. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
You rock!!! I had watched a bunch of help videos addressing this problem, but none looked like the inside of my GE Profile fridge. It seems GE used the Profile name for just about everything. I originally thought I had a clogged drain tube - and as I had rectified that on an older fridge, I went there first. But the drain tube was dry, so I knew I had a bigger problem. I was about to take apart a lot more on the inside than would have been required, but I figured I'd give RUclips one more try. Presto! Here I am. I have a model PYE22KMKFES. It's not exactly like the video, but very, very close. Also, my fan no. is WR60X26866 - or at least it was. It's been superseded by a new Nidec no.. I don't have that at my fingertips (the fan is in the fridge after all), but you can find it on the web. I got mine at Amazon. Also, I didn't have a steamer, so I used the wife's blow dryer on the low heat setting. I kept running my hand around the areas I was heating up just to make sure I wasn't overheating anything. This worked fine - but undoubtedly it was far slower than the steamer.
I was having the exact same problem with my refrigerator and it had the same solution you showed. I would have never thought of using steam, but it worked marvelously! Thanks for the video.
Precise explanation to fix my problem. Sure enough my evaporator fan wasn’t spinning freely and am going to order a new one. How do I know if I need a software update or not? Thank you!!
I have this same refrigerator. It’s 8 years old now and recently I get periodic condensation inside. I replaced all the door seals and that didnt change anything What could the issue be. Thanks!!
Thank you. Followed this and now our refrigerator is working great. Ordered the parts from amazon (next day delivery) since the local store wanted double smh.
My inside is not cooling my milk like it did 😢.. the girlfriend said she heard like a clicking sound from behind the fridge right before this happened now, This beat the same Coincidence...? Your video is pretty thorough.. good job..
Just did mine 30 min ago.....fan was defiantly the issue. It will take hrs to get it back to 37 but as soon as i plugged the new one in, it fired right up. It will get back to normal, but folks need to remember that the temps will take hrs to acclimate. Just leave it alone overnight and check the temps at the door.
Cheers and thanks for this video. Luckily found the OEM Niden fan locally at a appliance parts house down the road. I used my clothes steamer to good effect on removing the evap cover. Couldn't get as directional with the steamer as yours though as it doesn't have a hose attachment. So I used a turkey baster to pipe boiling water down the drain hole and clear the frozen line. It was worth the trip to the grocery store to get that in time saved trying to use my steamer to do that since I couldn't get close enough to the drain. Great video and thanks again!
Just put a new evaporator fan in with your help so I appreciate you! I did have a lot of ice built up so I am curious if I need to do this software update you mentioned…
Awesome video! That being said, I can't believe you like these refrigerators! We're on our third GE Cafe french door refrigerator. Current one is CYE22TSHPSS. Constantly having problems with them...thermostat, fans going out, control board, defrost not working. We have an LG from the mid 2000s that just works, no questions asked.
Thank you for this video; the PN linked wasn't the exact model I needed, but I believe the symptoms/remedy are the same. My fridge looks almost exactly the same as the one in the video, but GE parts catalog showed different PN; it may just be an updated PN since this video is 3+ years old. I ordered a fan and will hopefully have the install done tomorrow when the parts shows up.
Thank you. Excellent explanation... when the parts store said "that's a popular part I have plenty in stock" I knew this was the problem. How major a problem is this that the corner parts store keeps "plenty?" Thank you for your help.
I also thank you. I didnt pay enough attention to the noise that was apparently the fan on its last legs. Opened it up and the fan was seized, but started again once moved. It might buy a little time to get a replacement fan. Now if I can only get the drain to drain...tried to snake it and use hot water, but it still pools below drawer and eventually freezes. The ice sheets are cool, but annoying to remove so often.
This helped out so much! I’ve been trying to figure why my fridge was collecting water and couldn’t find any information on where the drain was located thank you!
Good video. Alternate way to defrost is to use a shop vac to blow air on the ice; very quick. The idea is to move room temperature air across trhe ice quickly
Good video! Direct and to the point yet very informative. I completed the work in an hour or so and all is working well. Saved myself hundreds of dollars I’m sure. Thanks!
Thank you for helping me to diagnose my refrigeration problem. Your presentation was detailed in explanation and demonstration. I was able to call my appliance repair company and tell them the symptoms and order the replacement fan. My one question is about the software update you mentioned. Can you tell me more about possible updates as well as if a homeowner can make that update and how it is done?
We had water leaking out the front of our GE and I thought it had to do with ice maker. But now the top isn’t cooling properly. We cleaned out the drain tube on back, and cleaned ice under freezer and all around tray and the drain behind back panel in freezer. We also ran hot water thru to make sure it wasnt still clogged.
Well all that did nothing for the cooling in the top portion of the refrigerator, could this be the problem? Items in the deli tray were freezing, but the rest of the top wasn’t very cold.
Thank you so much for this video! I was wondering if you could do a video on the touch screen repair..the screen doesn’t respond when you press on it. Thank you!
Super helpful. Do I need a software update? Model is GFE26GSKBSS Serial AH512932 It's 7 years old and I had some ice on top of condenser. What's worse was there was 1 inch of solid ice on pan down below.
How do you know if your fan is broken? Would it not spin if plugged in? My fridge drawers are freezing but the top of the fridge is 60 degrees. How do I know it's the fan or something else?
Thank you for this video! I didn’t have too much ice, so the cover wasn’t very difficult to take off. But there is water right up to the top of the drain. It’s not filling the drain pan, just breaching the surface of the hole. Does that mean there is still ice in the hole?
Great video, i ordered the one from Amazon, and its has the extra pigtail connector. I installed it. Now im not so sure it's the right one. Repair tech told me i needed to replace the cover as well and get a softwaye update. Total coat $700 and wouldn't be until next week. How can i get the software update?
I got home from work and found my GE fridge not cooling on the top, but the lower drawers were starting to freeze. I followed your video and and had it fixed in less than an hour after I got the fan!! Great video! Got any recommendations for a good dishwasher? I have a GE (not very old) and it’s toast. Never liked the way it performed. Any recommendations would be appreciated 👍
We have the same GE french door as in the video, model PYE22PSHHSS. Our fan shown in the video is working, However, every 2 to 3 months, the coils freeze up on the evaporator and we have turn off the fridge, thaw it out and then plug it all back in. In the process, our cover with insulation has become compromised. Question - what would cause the evaporator to freeze up every 2 to 3 months? Do you think it needs a new evap, the mentioned software update, possibly new cover with good insulation, etc. Any help is appreciated. Fridge works fine when we thaw it out and start it back up. Thank you so much for any and all help and for posting video.
This video was EXACTLY what I needed for my fridge. THANK YOU for posting it!! Now I need to know if I need a software update as you mentioned because I did have more ice on my coils than what yours have in this video. My model number is PFE28RSHHSS. Please let me know.
Hi. Great video thanks! I have a question. I have a similar refrigerator. The evaporator is going on and off intermittently, making a revving noise. I took everything apart and found a lot ice on the bottom. I took the fan out and it kept “revving” and running on and off. Do I need to replace the fan? Or is there something else that I should replace?
We have a GE PFE29PSDASS and we’re getting ice under that wide drawer. Could you send me the info on the software update kit? Thanks. Very informative video.
In you video you mention a possible software issue the model and serial numbers for the ge French door refrigerator PFP28KSLSS. Serial number TL510230. I’ve ordered the parts and steamer.
Great Video! My fans are running, is it possible they’re not running full speed? My fridge isn’t making ice and the refrigerator isn’t getting below 40°F Thanks
Sorry my GE model PFE27KSDSS Serial LA 505021 I still have a few months of warranty . It covers anything within the sealed refrigerating system . I don't know if that's included? I must have something more wrong . I also noticed another little compartment on the L side of the bottom back panel when you removed it. Can you please tell me if that could be my problem or what that is . I truly love your video . It's so straight forward and informative . I wish I would have watched before calling a repair man. Though I believe he did try . Thank you once again
I hope this is the problem, I guess my question is the whole top of my refrigerator is frozen how do i remove that? but i am about to check the fan thank you, you also possibly just saved me 2700 or more..
Thank you for the video. I have a question about this fan. Does the fan work for both top and freezer section? My freezer is only in the 20 degree and my top fridge is in the 60 degree. The bottom drawer in the fridge is very cold though.
Curious…all iced up as seen in video. Replaced fan and defrosted some but not entirely. Put all together and returned to cooling…for a while. Couple days later, doing same thing. Wondering if drain wasn’t cleared properly? Model #DFE29JMDHES
Thanks for the video. What if the evaporator fan works just fine? Top of fridge isn’t getting as cool, bottom deli drawer is freezing, water dispenser is freezing and won’t dispense. Do I need to replace the deli drawer fan? Or is it another issue?
Model number DFE28JMKFES, serial number TH534054. Top part of fresh food section warmer. Bottom part of fresh food section cold and has ice. Pulled the trays out and the evap cover off and the top two evap coils have lots of ice/frost. I suspect that the evap fan motor is bad, but in your video you mentioned some type of software update that might be needed?
Hey! thanks for the video. Does the small fan that pushes air into the veggie crisper only work if the bigger fan ..the one you replaced..is working? You disconnect and reconnect it in this video..but don't mention it.
I took the cover out and unplug the fan wire and hook it back in and turn on the fridge, the old fan still spinning..meaning the fan is still working propertly even though you can feel, hear, and see it spinning or just teplace a new one?
Hi thanks for the great video, I just replaced the evaporator fan and you made it easy. Two questions. One my evaporator coil was not frosted over at all everything looked great, the reason I changed out the evaporator fan was because it was making a clicking sound. Now because I kept the fridge on frost started forming all over the components, will that defrost on its own or should I have defrosted it before finishing the job? Two I have a question about the small fan on the left side for the deli compartment, that thing never came on at all when I plugged it in but when I went to put it back I forgot which way it was facing, I faced it with the label/model# facing towards the compartment, is that ok or do I need to flip it? When should that fan run? Thanks
Hi! Can you please let me know if there is a software update required? I really appreciate this video, made it so easy to take apart and I will get a new fan motor on Monday. I would just really like to avoid having to do this every 6 months so if there's a software update or something else I need to do, please let me know.
Thanks so much for a great video! We have almost no cooling in both our GE French Door unit...both the refrigerator and the freezer...model number CFE29TSDCSS. Would replacing this one fan in the refrigerator also solve the problem for the freezer? The unit still seems to have a hum, which I am assuming in the condenser working. Thanks!
I found this fan on amazon. I read that the 3 blades are the real fans. If it says upgraded, do I need the software update module? There is another fan directly to the left covered in styrofoam. I’m assuming try this first? It’s cooling ok, but the fan sounds like it’s going to explode. Ty for video.
Thank you for this video. We defrosted the ice without replacing the fan and it seems to be working and maintaining the correct temperature. Would you still replace the fan in this situation? Thank you.
I thought for sure this would fix the issue with my GE model GYE22KMHGES, but it didn't. The fridge actually seemed to freeze up even faster with the new fan, which I ordered from GE and was told it wouldn't need the software update. Guess I'll try replacing the defrost thermostat next, as that seems the most likely culprit. Very frustrating that the fan didn't fix it.
Ge adora franch door Model DFE28JMKFES / Serial MH510458 the some frozen ice on the coils and it goes up to the vegetable dewar and causing it to freeze I see the turning on but I don’t know if doing it’s job or could be the sensor on the evaporator need to be changed…your input is appropriate thank you
I put in the new fan and it has been running for about 12 hours. How long should it take before the fridge gets back down to temperature? Should I feel airflow coming out of the top vent in the back of the fridge? I may need that software update you mentioned.
You just saved me $2000. Appliance repair guy said I needed a new fridge! Tried replacing the fan and it’s fixed. THANK YOU
Sounds more like a salesman than a repairman. 😉😂
Grab a beer on me brother, local supply had the fan in stock for $80 and the fix took 30 minutes. You just saved me from stroking out this weekend!!!
This video saved us from having to buy a new refrigerator, an investment we didn't wish to make at this time. The video is clear and to the point. THANKS!

This worked fine - but undoubtedly it was far slower than the steamer.
thanks for the help. i wasnt sure how to pull the motor just to find out you just pull the motor. appreciate the video. this was my exact fridge.
Confirming that this fixed my issue...saved a lot of money...great instructions allowing me to do it myself
I was having the exact same problem with my refrigerator and it had the same solution you showed. I would have never thought of using steam, but it worked marvelously! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for this video. It saved me an expensive technician call, much appreciated.
Thank you so much for this video. I fixed my fridge because my pos husband wouldn't.
Excellent and clear video and advice. I ordered the part and the steamer and finished the job in 30 mins!💪
Thanks for the video! Super helpful and saved me a lot of money. My family and I appreciate your service.
Great help man. Love when folks like yourself post something that is very helpful to many of us. Appreciate it.
No problem 👍
Precise explanation to fix my problem. Sure enough my evaporator fan wasn’t spinning freely and am going to order a new one. How do I know if I need a software update or not? Thank you!!
I have this same refrigerator. It’s 8 years old now and recently I get periodic condensation inside. I replaced all the door seals and that didnt change anything What could the issue be. Thanks!!
Thanks so much for putting this out there fixed my fridge at the same time as I was cooking dinner. This was a life saver.
I know it's been a while, but do you remember how long it took you?
@@moeknows5418 like 45 minutes or so. I did it at the same time I was cooking diner one night
@@charliewhitledge3207 thanks!
Thank you. Followed this and now our refrigerator is working great. Ordered the parts from amazon (next day delivery) since the local store wanted double smh.
Thanks for the video! I was able to easily fix my fridge for a $70 part myself! It was definitely a bad fan, working great now.
Nice work!
I'm wondering if I need software update too though, it's a non-wifi GE Profile French Door model (PYE22PSHSS)
Three weeks wait for a repair technician...Thank you so much!
YOU SAVED ME HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
This was a fantastic video. I followed along and fixed the fan easily. Cost me $35 total. Thanks!
Thanks!
Glad to help! Thanks for the kind words!
Thank you so much for your video! I emptied and thawed out the refrigerator so I didn't need the steamer. Fixed it!
Great video and walk-through. I replaced this fan in my refrigerator this weekend. Simple easy and it works. Great thank you.
How do you do a software update on the type of fridge like the one your working on in this video
How does the small fan to the left work? When does it turn on and off?
I love this fridge we have them in our apartment complex where I work and the only problem we have is with the evaporator fan.
Thank you so much for this video! I was wondering if you could do a video on the touch screen repair..the screen doesn’t respond when you press on it. Thank you!
Super helpful. Do I need a software update? Model is GFE26GSKBSS
Serial AH512932
It's 7 years old and I had some ice on top of condenser. What's worse was there was 1 inch of solid ice on pan down below.
I have the same model. I'm wondering if it's the same fan evaporator. As he is saying here. GE says it changed. Any thoughts
How do you know if your fan is broken? Would it not spin if plugged in? My fridge drawers are freezing but the top of the fridge is 60 degrees. How do I know it's the fan or something else?
Thanks for the vid. The Harddest part was melting the ice specially in the h clogged hole. Now the waiting game to see if it cools
Thanks for the great video. I just ordered the part and the steamer. And thanks for putting the link in the description.
I had the exact problem, super easy to replace the fan. My fridge still isn't getting below 40 degress
Did you find out what was wrong with your refrigerator I am having the same issue as you any information would help thanks
Thank you so much this did the trick. Would have dad to wait a week for service and who knows how much for the repair.
I have the white ge cafe fridge with no water dispenser in the door. It just stopped cooling properly. But it's the whole unit. Freezer too
Great Video! My fans are running, is it possible they’re not running full speed? My fridge isn’t making ice and the refrigerator isn’t getting below 40°F Thanks
Great video thank you! How can I tell if my refrigerator needs software upgrade?
Sorry my GE model PFE27KSDSS
Serial LA 505021
I still have a few months of warranty .
Thanks for this video. $30 and 30 minutes instead of an expensive repair or replacement. I can’t wait for my next appliance to break.😂😂😂
Same here.
Did you guys ever get an answer to this? I’m having the same problem right now
Curious…all iced up as seen in video.
I suspect that the evap fan motor is bad, but in your video you mentioned some type of software update that might be needed?
great video. I was wondering how we can tell if the fan attached to the evaporator cover is bad?
Hey! thanks for the video.
Absolutely perfect video that I needed to fix my refrigerator. Thank you for this!!
I’m a tech and I so totally agree with you. My favorite fridge. What camera setup are you using? Looks like something mounted on your head
