- One of the world's most famous landmarks is made from soapstone. The Professor visited Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) during our recent trip to Rio de Janeiro.
Slippery soapstone is rich in magnesium.

*Pulls baby powder from vest*
Professor Poliakoff also dominated the crowd in that shot with his water bottle. Perspective is amazing.
I'm Brazilian and talked with him in Florianópolis
It was really amazing!
We took a picture and I watched his lecture.
it was a pleasure!!
Hugs from Brazil to all the people from Periodic Videos team, you are awesome!
Imagine how the staute would look with the professor's hair on it.... would be awesome
The shot of Christ the Redeemer and the fog was really cool! Maybe someday I will see it in person I hope :)
Great chemistry too as always!
Baby powder, this sort of ... powder... you put on babies.
A professor is always prepared, check out that utility jacket. Batman ain't got nothin' on Poliokoff
OMG! so glad you came! love the periodictableofvideos! thank you all!!!
What stroke me is that I always heard the the Rio de Janeiro mountains, except for the Arpoador Rock - situated exactly between Ipanema and Copacabana beaches - were made out of Gnaisse, and not Granite. Antd therefore a different substract, of a completely diverse geological age...
i love the feel of soapstone
Interesting video. A few days ago a lightning stroke the statue again breaking one of its fingers.
The base looks more like granite than marble to me.
glad to know you had been here!
Please make more videos like this! So educational, i was amazed at the cool fact about the conductor and the marble! Thanks for the educational video!
Every time I see there's a new periodic video out I immediately "like" it since I know it'll be good and so that I don't forget to later.
This video is no exception ;)
Seems like Professor Poliakoff had an enjoyable time in Rio de Janeiro. I'm glad that so many of these videos are made, on so many topics, in so many locations.
Espero que você tenha curtido a viagem! Volte sempre professor!
E mais um ótimo vídeo!
Really *really* cool idea for a video, guys. Congrats and keep up the amazing work you do!
This professor is a wonderful guy. He pulls all kinds of things from his pockets.
Excellent video!
I love how he breaks things down:)
Thankyou:)
I didn't expect you to visit my town ^^, i'm glad you did.
@periodicvideos I'll take care of that:
"Legendas em Português disponíveis para este vídeo: Clique no botão "CC" logo abaixo do vídeo"
PS: Can't wait to see this, I live in São Paulo and it was an honor to have the Professor in my country. Keep up the good work!
Brady, I know you're plate's full already, but I would love to see a geology channel- especially with the rich geologic history in the UK.
Thanks for this video either way.
@periodicvideos Legendas em português estão disponíveis para esse video... use o pequeno botão CC.
I'm very glad for known that Professor Poliakoff visited my country.
I hope that there is more videos about the brazil
I love how the professor trekked up that mountain with a bottle of baby powder.
Who'd have thought a video on soapstone could spark such a colourful and enthralling comment discussion ;)
Science fascinates me. I just wanted you to know how much i appreciate the hard work you put into these videos. I thoroughly enjoy them! Your an interesting fellow, keep up the good work. Could you, whenever you have the time, do video on how you got involved in science. Amazing. Hope you enjoyed your trip to Brazil. There is so much to see in Brazil and so little time. The geology there is spectacular....and biology.
@periodicvideos Looking forward to them !!!!
Where does he get his ties???
It's funny that you posted this video on the same day I was thinking of asking you to do a video on how soap works to remove dirt on the molecular level. I suppose it still doesn't hurt to ask. Will you do a video explaining how soap works to remove dirt on the molecular level?
Great vids btw, I wantch them all the time.
I use soapstone in my welding career to mark metal for various jobs. Frankly, Im shocked anyone would make a statue out of it because you can hold it 3 inches above a table, drop it, and it will shatter. Its extra brittle. Nice video
I love how he just pulls out baby powder out of his jacket.
Wow! Professor is here in Brazil! Enjoy :D
Glad to see the Prof got a chance to get out of the lab :D
Amazing, what else could I say
love the tie :D
Hi Brady,
how about this as an idea for a project...
recreate the experiments that Primo Levi made in his book "The Periodic Table".
Love all your videos and glad you won your prestigious award recently.
All the best
Wow you went to Rio?
That place is gorgeous.
Muito interessante, realmente o Cristo Redentor é um grande feito da engenharia brasileira.
I am not a chemistry person but I do watch your videos and find them interesting
So nice to see that you visit a place here from Brazil! If I knew you were comming I would invite you to stay at my home and visit Iguassu Falls with me. Kisses from Brazil, we love you!
@periodicvideos xD I'm a brazilian and I know:

Wonderful country!
Brady - yr vids are just getting better and better - I really really hope you keep making them and dont get poached by some big flash outfit! :)
@periodicvideos According to babelfish its
Subtítulos portugueses disponíveis neste… uso video a tecla pequena do cc.
awesome
Very interesting
Ah, youtube, surely the most enlightening, informative, and powerful medium for forming common understanding between different religious viewpoints.
..at least the science is interesting.
@ndyt nice one!! bet that looks awesome. we recently did kitchen too, loved marble, but heard it broke really easy, so expensive to replace. didnt know we could get granite tho - that stuff is HARD! nevermind, still looks good. agreed - i would put money on that base being granite - even a granite facing/veneer type thing, but real polished granite.
How about a video about aerogel? Idk if that would be possible...
JESUS WANTS A HUUUUUUUUUUG
I like how the professor whips out the baby power from this vest hahah!
Awesome
What else are you guys planning to do in Brazil?
Wow - I didn't know that statue was made of soapstone. I would have thought it would be badly weathered by now. I guess wind and rain aren't as hard on substances as the mentioned freezing and thawing.
What about rain (acid rain in particular) doesnt that affect the statue?
@biodanubia I just hope the Professor made the trip to the Falls. No one should miss them being so close.
I like how his eyes move slowly. Bit like that mamoth thing from sesame street.
@rjal1992 well he is a chemist and not a geologist. A very very smart chemist at that.
very cool,
@donperry1Depends on how long people are willing to keep fixing it.
@afascina yes marble is metamorphosed calcium carbonate. granite is a volcanic rock. very different
What tie does he have on now
Welcome to Rio, Professor.
I am a Brazilian and I live in Rio. Are you still in rio ?
1. I love how he just pulls out baby powder out of his jacket.
2. Congratulations for "...I am sure that many people can read all sorts of significance into that. (Pause.) I don’t read any significance. Except as a fantastic demonstration of the different kinds of materials, of the different chemical compositions, can give you such different properties."
LOL
indeed it does, but im pretty sure they repair it sub-yearly due to even a hard rain being able to erode it some
@danlnad hi - was that comment/question directed to brady or the prof? Im pretty sure there are already vids about how both became interested in science. the prof has a few vids about various aspects, if i remember correctly.
Finally he visited my country.
Well good luck not being robbed in this city there, cause Rio is really a violent city, despite all its natural beauties.
Come to Singapore~!
Brazil is a great place. I've been there.
why does helium have a lower freezing temperature then hydrogen if hydrogen is the lightest gas ? because i know it goes like that up till helium and hydrogen then it switches and the heavier gas is harder to freeze ? or am i completely mistaken and wrong
@jeebersjumpincryst, just dropped $3k on granite counters in my kitchen. Did a lot of shopping around and I never saw marble that looked like that, but I have seen a lot of granite that looked just like that. Also, marble doesn't stay shinny like that when exposed to weather. It is not nearly as durable as granite.
I've been to Brazil a couple of times and spent about 2 months there. I love it there, but professor... I have one bewildering question.... How on earth did you take the British weather there? :P
PS You were less than a mile from where I stayed for some of that time :D
It's the first time I hear someone speak about programmed elements in religious terms and not in terms of computer programming
Looks like the Professor is having way too much fun, lol.
Would acid rain erode the soapstone? I know that acid rain certainly affects marble.
I love this channel by the way!
Thank you for all the great videos!
i am reminded of original batman movie where batman just happens to have bat-anti-shark-repellent during a shark attack when he pulls out the powder. but seriously, interesting video.
@lexichronicle2 This is a channel for learning, not dogma
@Almontmarine
periodicvideos made a video where they asked around their contributors about their religious views. Look it up.
i love how the professor kept taking the things out of his pockets
It's hard to be sure but the base looks like it's made from Gabbro or similar mafic (alkaline) igneous rock rather than the marble mentioned. Just an ex Geologist being picky ;-) Keep up the good work.
o rio de janeiro .continua lindo música de caetano veloso.
so NaOH, this soapstone is really soft, what about throwing the statue with some kind of harder and stronger stone, will it break?
You should see about that incident in the US with the 50-foot foam-and-steel Jesus that burned to the ground after being struck.
Thumbs up for the doctor carrying baby powder in his jacket :D
@rimwydas44 It is the same statue, favela's are the slums of rio...The COD guys are pretty good about using real places in their games like chernobyl in modern warfare 1.
i want to meet or just take a photo with him! Are you still in rio ?
i went to the christ last week i truly regret not going at the same day :'(
But how could i know....
I have a new innuendo now, stroking the stone.
magnesium silicate is MgSiO3.
@fkazuo24 thank you for correction, all my point is it is very very beautiful statue stands in a very very beautiful city of very beautiful country! very symbolic (even material used) and breath taking!
Ohh my godness! Prof Poliakoff is at my city! I want to meet him! Brady how can i do it? Please answer me! o.O
de ja vu,
has anyone seen this uploaded before
@igorcoreixas I met brady in london at a youtube convention, he gave me 2 business cards, 1 was for sixty symbols and the other for periodic videos. its a shame the professor wasn't there.
MgSiO4(OH)2 I think
does marble come from marbles? :D
the base is not made of marble, but granite that is harder and more chemically stable.
Owwwwwnnnn, in my country!! Cool.. I wish I were there! =(
This man is a boss, just look at his epic hair.
Why was the professor in Brazil ?
