    definitely agree on the last point!! It's always so disappointing to me to discover a new pre-made brand that states it has "balanced meat, bone and organs" but you look at the ingredients and it's just liver and heart or lung ESPECIALLY if it's a novelty protein like noooooo I was so looking forward to kangaroo spleen and ostrich brain 😭

    We feed the KIVO brand to our dogs. Every meat roll says wether the stuff is complete or not. Although I could probably add stuff for our dogs specifically. Our dogs do great on this food!

      I feed that to my dog too! I like the extra steps the company goes through to make sure their food is ethical. And it is balanced but I've talked with my holistic vet about supplements. I also rotate the protein

    i feed my dog commercial raw. idk about the popular international brands, but i tend to buy from local brands, and my pet peeve is that sometimes they would say "single ingredient meal" which means like, if they say the main protein is lamb then all the organs and bones would be from lamb, too (not counting whatever veggies they might add in later), but when you read the ingredients list closely it turns out they also add in organs or bones from other, often cheaper protein source. it made it harder to feed my dog way back when he gets itchy from chicken. he's thankfully fine with any sort of protein now, but it still irks me that some sellers would advertise their product as one thing when really it's not.

    • @PawsofPrey
      @PawsofPrey  2 года назад

      That's unfortunate! Single ingredient is a big deal especially if pets have a sensitivity to another protein that may be snuck in - I'm sorry about that.

    So much this. My kitty really liked Primal frozen Venison nuggets, and I was pretty happy with them until I started having trouble with dietary oxalates myself. This clued me into some hip and leg soreness she seems to have sometimes. If oxalates can cause arthritis in humans, they can do it in cats, too.
    I took another look at the ingredient list on the Primal venison, and the 4th ingredient is kale. KALE?!?! What cat needs a green so high in oxalate?
    We're switching to Small Batch!

      I know they use synthetic nutrients in their formulas as opposed to nutrients derived solely from meat, bone and organs. There's nothing inherently wrong with using synthetic vitamins and minerals to supplement a raw meal, so it's really up to you to decide if you want to include it in your dog's diet.

  • @geehanel-abbassi7220
    @geehanel-abbassi7220 2 года назад +2

    also, commercial raw food brands cannot be to AAFCO standards without having SOME form of synthetic vitamin, so you either get synthetic or whole fruits and veggies. so the point u mentioned about fruits and vegetables but also looking for AAFCO certification is contradicting.

    as a science graduate there is no such thing as complete or balance diet. even if feeding whole prey each individual of whole prey dont have the exact nutrient make up of the same whole prey. i.e feeding whole duck one duck can be deficient in iron compared to the next whole duck which may be too high vitamin e based on what the levels should be for that specie of duck. so every animal although containing the same nutrients can have varying nutrient profiles even if its the same specie. lastly, we as humans do not know what constitutes to a complete or balance diet for most animals especially dogs since we do not what a dogs true nutrient make ups are. hence its an estimate or range values.

    • @leanntan3229
      @leanntan3229 2 года назад

      True, every animal has different levels of nutrients and every organ is different too. But using the set values according to aafco guidelines is better than not doing so at all.

    • @michael-lynn
      @michael-lynn Год назад

      I agree. I also believe too many humans are messing things up against nature. Naturally there is no exact complete and balanced diet, and each dog is an individual, as well as the prey they eat; if looking for perfection in a complete and balanced diet that's not going to happen because people can only theorize what that is.

    I do a wmix of brands, i find that brands can use different animal parts so mixing them gives more variety, i use big country raw, primal, bold by nature and sometimes red dog blue kat, any thoughts about them? I have pretty bad anxiety so making a balance meal myself is very overwhelming, the ingredients lists on the brands I buy seem to me pretty good

      You must be from Ontario! I also feed my cat big country raw. But I find that many people who are more versed in raw feeding tell me that Iron will raw is superior in meat quality. I also feed " big country raw " dog and cat food. I also will try to incorporate some vegs and fruit in alternating days. Adding fresh yolk 1-2 X a week also helps. Once and a while I get another name brand of raw food as well as making a fresh bone broth from all my bones I keep.Dr. Morgan has a utube video of how to make a delicious 😋 broth terrific for our soups as well. Some times I do incorporate fish in a meal as well as trying to make a recipe of salmon, white fish, mussles and another fresh fish I can afford. I also feed raw bones 1-2X a week. Duck necks or chicken necks hearts, kidneys, any thing else I can source as well. I feel I am doing as much as possible to cover most if not all nutritional needs.

    One question about iron, I use iron drops (for humans) to balance my cat’s food if there is not enough iron in the meat (I calculate my “recipes” to be 100% of all the requirement nutrients)
    The drops are suitable for vegetarians/vegans so it’s plant based iron. Do you think the bioavailability is still okay if its already in a pure form, even if its not animal-based iron?

    That last point seems so strange, if anything I'd figure getting the "weird" organs would be far cheaper since those get thrown out from anything prepared for humans. It's not like you'd find cow brains just readily availible anywhere all those waste organs feels like they would be easier to get than a liver which is still used for some human foods.

    • @BreakEm22

    I recently looked at the label for a complete and balanced beef raw food. The first two ingredients are heart and liver. There was no muscle meat. This looks hugely imbalanced to me. The copper must be sky high. A dog needs liver and heart but in the proper proportion or imbalances will occur.

    Im confused because you did speak on primal in the past that they are a good premade raw brand despite having 7% vegetables in their cat raw food. It is well known that cats can process fruits and vegetables that are lower than 10%. Dry food has so much more than that and raw food companies shouldn't be put as a red flag because they use a small amount of vegetables in their premade form.
