Different types of gothic letters are one of the best for engraving practice. Also quotes, dedications on things you will craft will be most wanted I guess. I wish you quick recovery to full health!
Noticing the prescription of your glasses after watching almost every video you have published. I would reccomend taking your glasses off to engrave and other super close fine detail work.
I used to work in watch repair and for magnifying what you’re working on there is nothing better than eye loupes that clip onto your glasses...you can get them in multiple zoom classes...you should be able to find them on amazon.
Cool! Looks like a fun skill to learn, I know nothing about engraving, but it seems to me that you'd have a lot more control if you had a handle on that thing that was easier to index and get a better feel for your work, rather than a round handle.
that is a hand engraving vice for wooden handled hand engraving in soft metal , steel engraving is done in a fixed solid vice or a vice you rotate with your feet , round flat vice with a steel tube passing through the bench to a foot ring , you sit high put your feet on the foot ring and rotate the work with the feet under the bench while cutting curves above the bench , you don't have to rotate your body
Goldsmith here. Bench height is usually about 40 inches to top. Allows you to rest your elbows on bemch top. Also with gravers you generally shorten the blade for your work, hand graving I cut about an inch off of them. Also carve a sweep into the back of the knive graver so that sharpening is easier. Sharpening must be perfect, they need to be polished and the cutting face needs to be wicked sharp. Had a chick that worked at a local shop make a stupid mistake and ride her hand up the back of the graver ball. Tool wasnt sharp it jumped the cut and slammed up to the wooden pommel through her palm. Missed tendons but she was lucky. Please be careful. Hammer graving tends to produce sticcato lines due to the start stop but can be cleaned up by hand later. Gravers are usually HSS and last most people a lifetime.
does anybody tried that tecnique of acetone to transfer the painting from the paper to the steel and after that use ferric chloride to mark it? if works, its a easy way to mark knives with.
Don't worry if you need some days to revover. Most of us know, how bad it ist to have your wisdom teeth removed. We will still be here after a few days.
Idea: Make a damascus version of that engraving hammer. What a skill to hone, engraving. Respect to you for diving in with your usual enthusiasm and drive. Hope your mouth feels better soon.
Remember when you used to start your videos with tig welding since you wanted to practice. YOU NEED TO START DOING THAT WITH ENGRAVING, STARTING TODAY Then you'll get your practice, then you'll get better!!!
One of my favorite things about your channel is that you are never afraid to try new skills and you incorporate the new skills as you start new projects. I can only guess how awesome your projects will turn out in the future!
I know the pain Alec! I got all 4 wisdoms out at once and I couldnt eat for a whole week and my face blew up! I wanted to laugh at myself but the pain was too much
I did an apprenticeship as engraver in Suhl, germany. The ball vise is good for smaller tasks and letters but for making scrolls ect you should Build a vise that can rotate freely. We used a normal vise on a bearing with adjustable height and adjustable rotation. Thats how we did it in class. And thats how the professional engravers in germany do it. You can get the curves a lot better and kinks will Not Happen that easily. It will be a lot cleaner. Keep it up, you doin very good. love your vids.Greetings from germany. Hope this will help you, cheers Edit: another tip: perfect distance from your working piece is when you can put your fist under your chin and your elbow on the vise and keeping your back straight. Otherwise you will end up having serious back pain very soon ^^
Arie Kieser speaking of getting much better i made my first knife using alec's pre-form technique and it the best one ive made yet. Its a chopper with a convex grind, and a black walnut handle and it looks very nice
I really like the mellowed down version of you! Most of the time you are a bit to intense for my taste, but your channel is to good to just " not watch anymore". Damn you 😉
Tranquility and silence, finally. To be honest, I like this style much more. You're finally not yelling at the camera. Can you continue like this? Sincerely yours P.S. Get better soon
Haha, I do tend to mute it whenever something comes out of the etch... Still some of my favourite content on RUclips at the moment (except for This Old Tony, but hey, no one can beat that)
Bobby Hempel, you - maybe. I - don't. It's a matter of preference. IMHO, if you say so. No doubt, it's definitely one of a hell quality content. But general loudness and noisiness for me - it's a drawback. No offense intended.
Well, thats a coincidence. I was chatting with an engraver today who was on holiday in my village in France. I google his name and his stuff is incredible - 3D engravings on gun stocks. His name is Vincent Crowley - I'm hoping to do a Chop knives collaboration with him on one of my knives. Great to see you pick this up so quickly - hope the mouth heals quickly!
Why not try to get a hold of Holland and Holland and see if theyll give you a tour and give you a crash course in their workshop since they do a LOT of engraving?
Just started practicing a bit as well...I hope at least you are a pro by now, because in a year or 2, everybody will own a fiberlaser :p so when I am a pro, its obsolete.
Alec would love to buy some shirts from your store but like all people that have online stores you stop at 3xl some of us are big guys and need a little bigger shirts. I personally wear a 4x so if you get any of those I'll buy some. Thanks from Michael in America. Keep inspiring all of us to Puch our limits and boundaries!
If this is your first attempt at H&C engraving, you did very well. Looks like the ragged edges of your cuts may have been caused by either not having your graver properly sharpened or making too deep a cut (too aggressive). I like a parallel face on my graver as it makes nice even cuts and is easy to resharpen.Graver control comes with practice and nothing can replace it. If you want your engraving to look like you've been engraving for 20 years, you have to engrave for 20 years. There is only one shortcut and that is to train under a good instructor. Love you video's. Keep up the good work. Those that dare, win.
Prayers for a fast recovery.. I've never had wisdom teeth at all. Clove oil will help with the pain and a used tea bag will also help soothe pain. So glad you decided to delve into more engraving art.
Black magic? Is this a dig on A Childers "Prayers for a fast recovery" or tea bags and clove oil? If it's the latter then ice is good for reducing swelling but should be used on the face while applying a moist tea bag to the wound. The tannins in tea are vasoconstrictors that help stop bleeding as well as being antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Clove oil is of little use after an extraction but it's one of the foundations of dentistry. It's used for both antiseptic and pain killing and a temporary filling is essentially dental cement and clove oil. On the other hand if it was a dig against religion, grow up.
When you started off this video all quiet and subdued, I thought it might have been because you were out partying for Alex's last night in the forge...
Not that I dont like your usual videos, I love them actually! But I think I actually prefer this "serious-face Alec" for some reason. On the subject of wisdom teeth - I also had mine removed about a month ago, I feel you mate!
It's nice to have a break from the normal super energetic Alec. His noisy enthusiasm is sometimes overwhelming for a quiet introverted person like myself.
I like the calmer video a lot more. That's just me. Hope you are feeling better soon. I was all happy I hit 10k subs (still am) but you are at 1.1m! Amazing Alec. Engraving is definitely a huge rabbit hole, I have been doing some lately on soft metals making arm rings.
Feel well soon, I’d love to get into engraving- it’s just so hard to figure out what gravers to get and where to get them, the geometry of the faces, and how to sharpen them (diamond, I assume).
Alec thanks for the inspiration I now have a forge some tools I’m thirteen and I’ve been saving for a belt grinder my family gave me a tig/stick welder/plasmacutter for my birthday and I love blacksmithing
As a Jeweler by trade for the last 15 years, I can safely say that engraving is one of the more challenging tasks I've attempted. The key I have found is to make sure you always have a very sharp graver and sometimes it helps to grind a small relief on the bottom of your graver. Something around 10 degrees or maybe less, everyone has different ideas about it but it seemed to help me.
One thing I found in my brief and far less successful foray into engraving was the tendency for my hand to not move as the cut is made, so the graver gets shallower and shallower until it skitters away from me over the surface and scratches the metal. But this video has inspired me to sharpen up my tools and try again.
You need to learn to hold and use the chasing hammer: it's not actually held and used like a blacksmith's hammer, but held with the big bulb end nestled between ball of the thumb and 3rd finger and your hand/wrist basically vibrates against the end of the graver. This gives you a huge amount of control as the graver moves tiny amounts so you can follow small and subtle curves vs. the big jumps and angles you're getting as you "whack" the end of the graver the way you're currently doing it, and the long shaft of the hammer gives you more than adequate power to engrave even hardened metals (as long as you have a proper graver) due to the long springy lever effect..
Alec, maybe it is a great Idea to ask men at arms reforged from the awe me channel for some advice, a couple of these Guys have a lot of experience with complex engraving. Just a couple of suggestions for you, I like that you try out some new things from your own perspective, it is very inspirational.
Love the way you jump in and learn and apply new ideas, just shows that anyone can try and see what they could do! Best of luck on the new project and swift healing.
Hammer and chisel engraving, the recommendation is to set up your work free standing to be able to walk around it.. it makes it a lot easier to make curves and angle changes. Also polish your graders. 3000 grit makes a big difference. The higher the polish, the better they cut (provided the angles are ground right)
LOL what a big coincidence I just got done with the dentist today had a root canal and another tooth fixed I feel your pain I hope you get better and the first time I learn how to engrave my teacher had me start out with softer metal like copper and aluminum he says it's easier to learn how the metal moves while your Engraving and help you perfect your technique then gradually move up in hardness
"had a doctor go hammer and tongs on me" had me dying I don't know why.
mortallum 1997 that’s my understanding of what a dentist does 😂
That's what happens when a dentist and a blacksmith crosses paths.
Different types of gothic letters are one of the best for engraving practice. Also quotes, dedications on things you will craft will be most wanted I guess. I wish you quick recovery to full health!
Wisdom teeth suck, got all of mine taken out in April. You're a real trooper for continuing the videos! You'll heal in no time!!!
Noticing the prescription of your glasses after watching almost every video you have published. I would reccomend taking your glasses off to engrave and other super close fine detail work.

Yay! Something as a Jeweler i can watch and be like "What a noob" Instead of the usual "Hrm, that's interesting"
that is a hand engraving vice for wooden handled hand engraving in soft metal , steel engraving is done in a fixed solid vice or a vice you rotate with your feet , round flat vice with a steel tube passing through the bench to a foot ring , you sit high put your feet on the foot ring and rotate the work with the feet under the bench while cutting curves above the bench , you don't have to rotate your body
If you want to look at more decorative techniques maybe chasing would be something you would be interested in?
That start had an Apetor vibe to it
Get well soon. I know what you are going through.... @18 I had 8 "hammer and chiseled" out. Not fun. BTW love the softer voice!!!
Goldsmith here. Bench height is usually about 40 inches to top. Allows you to rest your elbows on bemch top. So glad your doing this. Just starting to learn myself. Go watch Shaun Hughes Hand Engraving. Amazing work and detail
Wait... what??! Just acetone on a regular pic 😱
Yeah im stunned too....WTF :-o
Yep, news to me too. Wonder if it'll work on wood as well?
has to be a laser print for the acetone trick but it does work on wood
I started forging because of you
I feel you there man mine are just coming in so I am kinda scared what will happen so please don't edit out the bad parts
You’re leaf is better than I can draw 😂
“Ahh damn I smiled”
ASMR blacksmithing could be a thing
does anybody tried that tecnique of acetone to transfer the painting from the paper to the steel and after that use ferric chloride to mark it? if works, its a easy way to mark knives with.
get well soon :D
Don't worry if you need some days to revover. Most of us know, how bad it ist to have your wisdom teeth removed. We will still be here after a few days.
PLEASE ENGRAVE SOME RUNES ON THE SWORD
this episode of Alec Steele makes me wonder how the hell tattoo artists get good at what they do. Do they practice on pigs or something???
Haha no yeah I’m fine my jaw is still numb and I have stitches and swelling and much pain but I can still make this video. Beast Alec haha
Idea: Make a damascus version of that engraving hammer. What a skill to hone, engraving. Respect to you for diving in with your usual enthusiasm and drive. Hope your mouth feels better soon.

Michael Goodwin DEFINETLY A GREAT IDEA GOOD SIR!
Agrees whole heartedly.
Good idea
Michael Goodwin then tig weld again haha
Just had a 4 tooth removal a few months back, i feel you my good sir.
i mean lifehacks are just stupid but that acetone trick thingemado is just the best thing ever. Get well soon
I just tried this and it didn't work lol is my acetone broken?
One of my favorite things about your channel is that you are never afraid to try new skills and you incorporate the new skills as you start new projects. I can only guess how awesome your projects will turn out in the future!
I know the pain Alec! I got all 4 wisdoms out at once and I couldnt eat for a whole week and my face blew up! I wanted to laugh at myself but the pain was too much
I feel your pain as well ThatAussieBloke all four taken out
Whenever people talk about wisdom teeth and all I suddenly realise I have only a few years left before it's my turn...;_;
This was awesome to watch! Hope you feel better soon! 🙌😃

This is the same vise that Sam Alfano uses and well, he’s the best in the world. So yeah, he’s got the right tools.
Wisdom teeth, highly overrated!
yeah still have 2 of these and can't wait to get rid of them
Quentin Bry lost a couple in a car crash after the steering wheel tried to rearrange my face (before airbags softened the process) 😂
I had to have my back molars removed to make space for them
muppetnumpty65, that's no fun at all, they're supposed to detonate before that happens
Got 2 of them removed because my jaw is too small, they almost damaged my back molars
The 2 left on top, will go too after a couple of months
0:19 Its not 3/4s less smart. Just 3/4s less wise. Feel better soon.
Alec good luck with your teeth, and keep up the great work, I an following and learning from you. I am getting much better.
Arie Kieser speaking of getting much better i made my first knife using alec's pre-form technique and it the best one ive made yet. Its a chopper with a convex grind, and a black walnut handle and it looks very nice

While I love HIGH ENERGY Alec, I also rather like q u i e t Alec. The contrast is refreshing.
Tranquility and silence, finally. To be honest, I like this style much more. You're finally not yelling at the camera. Can you continue like this? Sincerely yours

Blood Angels Assault Racoon NOOOOO!!!!!! We love loud Alec

I like this quiet contained style too. Maybe Alec can find a comfortable middle ground?
I have an idea. Just let the guy be himself...
1.1 million subs! 👍 You will be at 2 mil beofre the end of the year😁
Dentist, forgers with a different kind of metal.
Feel better!
The intro sounded like a Bob Ross video black smith style haha, love it!
love your vid even if you can’t talk
Ahh but the real question is does your dentist whare your merch??? Lol.. Never STOP learning Alec never... Be praying for your fast recovery
Your drive to learn is unmatched, sir. I love watching you progress through things like this.
Actually I think "This Old Tony" does teeth extraction! And no way he would make you laugh!

If you like engraving, check out Shaun Hughes Hand Engraving channel, amazingly detailed tiny pieces of art.
Why not try to get a hold of Holland and Holland and see if theyll give you a tour and give you a crash course in their workshop since they do a LOT of engraving?
1320crusier if I were a professional engraver, that would be my Mecca
Wisdom teeth-
Keeping mouths quiet since 2003
Just started practicing a bit as well...I hope at least you are a pro by now, because in a year or 2, everybody will own a fiberlaser :p so when I am a pro, its obsolete.
I'm totally cool with the occasional quiet Alec vid, recovering from surgery or not.
This type of work doesn't meet the Doise criteria of the workshop
It's clearly Shoise. Shavings and noise- 'cause if you think the tap-tap-taps aren't loud and annoying...
How will Alec ever finish the Viking sword with 3/4 less wisdom?
¾ less smart = 59% smrt 🧐
Philip Gardiner it’s because he lost his wisdom
Jackbo M He gets it he’s poking fun at himself.Quite witty really.
Paul Fitzpatrick if you think I think wisdom teeth actually contain wisdom.. 🧐
Forge a coffee cup😎

Alec, try carving on copper, bronze, and aluminum. THEN work on steel. You jumped straight into the deep end!
Prayers for a fast recovery.. I've never had wisdom teeth at all. Clove oil will help with the pain and a used tea bag will also help soothe pain. So glad you decided to delve into more engraving art.
Lucky. I got nerve damage from getting mine out.
The tea bag also helps with inflammation and to prevent infection.
Ice will work best actually. Black magic isn't as reputed in the medical world
And if non of that works, use good old oral morphine. Lovely stuff.
Black magic? Is this a dig on A Childers "Prayers for a fast recovery" or tea bags and clove oil? When you started off this video all quiet and subdued, I thought it might have been because you were out partying for Alex's last night in the forge...
Alec Stein? Ben Steele? WHO AM I WATCHING!?!?!?!
You should engrave Norse runes because it is most of the Viking religion
Not that I dont like your usual videos, I love them actually! But I think I actually prefer this "serious-face Alec" for some reason. On the subject of wisdom teeth - I also had mine removed about a month ago, I feel you mate!
It's nice to have a break from the normal super energetic Alec. His noisy enthusiasm is sometimes overwhelming for a quiet introverted person like myself.
i don't know if I'm super lucky or not but in addition to the 4 missing adult teeth i have i also seem to be missing my wisdom teeth as well.
dude take a day of to recover
Love the softer voice . Do it once in a while among ze videos... and learn from this experience. 🙂👍
Quiet Alex makes me uncomfortable. It's like when my wife gets quiet and makes me wonder if I've done something wrong.
you did, you definitely did....
Feel well soon, I’d love to get into engraving- it’s just so hard to figure out what gravers to get and where to get them, the geometry of the faces, and how to sharpen them (diamond, I assume).
ASMR intro... I liked it
Its ASMR time
(Homer simpson scared squill)
Ah! A calmed down Alec steel!
גיא שעשוע Lol XD well, this is an interesting glitch
Alec thanks for the inspiration I now have a forge some tools I’m thirteen and I’ve been saving for a belt grinder my family gave me a tig/stick welder/plasmacutter for my birthday and I love blacksmithing
Dang wisdom teeth are terrible! Waited years to long to get mine removed, and it was no walk in the park. Hope you feel FANTASTIC again soon! - Danny
Talking so quietly doesn't suit you xD
As a Jeweler by trade for the last 15 years, I can safely say that engraving is one of the more challenging tasks I've attempted. The key I have found is to make sure you always have a very sharp graver and sometimes it helps to grind a small relief on the bottom of your graver. Something around 10 degrees or maybe less, everyone has different ideas about it but it seemed to help me.
I learned something new today! That acetone trick is awesome! Thank you Alec! :)
co-lab with Uri Tuchman?
calmest video ever... your lack of teeth is struggling to contain yourself, and not smiling to!
One thing I found in my brief and far less successful foray into engraving was the tendency for my hand to not move as the cut is made, so the graver gets shallower and shallower until it skitters away from me over the surface and scratches the metal. But this video has inspired me to sharpen up my tools and try again.
The learning curve for hand engraving is years, not months.
Silver steel makes great knives too. Also great for Hamon
I losed my Wisdom teeth too , and I can not forge anything for 4 days😣😫
Try engraving towards your body.
gargle some whiskey Alec! 👍😉
Very Nice could Imagine you making engraving some Bigger stuff. Howe long does the small engravings Took?
Your ambition is always inspiring Alec, Engraving will be an incredible addition to your skill set, and your work. Keep at it!
Alec, maybe it is a great Idea to ask men at arms reforged from the awe me channel for some advice, a couple of these Guys have a lot of experience with complex engraving.
Just a couple of suggestions for you, I like that you try out some new things from your own perspective, it is very inspirational.
When you're quiet, you're like a blacksmith David Attenborough, it's quite amazing
Love the way you jump in and learn and apply new ideas, just shows that anyone can try and see what they could do! Best of luck on the new project and swift healing.
Hammer and chisel engraving, the recommendation is to set up your work free standing to be able to walk around it.. it makes it a lot easier to make curves and angle changes. get yourself a pneumatic engraving hammer.... much more controllable and quicker.
With your lack of enthusiasm, this honestly sounded like an old professor lecturing his half asleep class xD
I like this volume better anyhow. Makes the words you’re saying easier to absorb.
Feel like you should make you're own ingraving hammer to go with you're home made chisels
Damn, sorry to hear about the teeth. I've found brandy is a pretty good anaesthetic 😂 Hope they have a quick recovery!
