I called DYSON a few years ago. They deny that the inner parts can be cleaned-- yet I can SEE all that dust built up in there. Anyway, every three months, I've gotten to the first part of getting the cyclone out of the clear plastic bin, washing it with water, and letting it dry. LOTS of clumps of dirt and dust came out. Now, perhaps I will go the full route based on your instructions. (My 5 year warranty ended this year.) Thanks for the lessons.
I cannot thank you enough for this video. I had no idea that one could even clean the inside of a vacuum and turns out it is the cyclone giving off odor. So easy to follow your instructions and I am not a handy or coordinated person.
On balance I'd say you do less damage to the cyclone by flushing it with water and letting it dry completely than taking a flathead screwdriver and prying it open. You can probably only do that about 10 times before you're going to snap one of the ports. On the other hand if you flush it with water, you can just place it over one of your heater vents in your house and it will be dry within the day. For what it's worth, I've been doing this for a while now and it hasn't caused me any problems yet! Your mileage may vary, of course. 😃
Same. I had mud that smelled like a dead animal in there. I disassembled and soaked everything with water. It's clean but let's see if I can put it all back
Holy cow! Your videos are very thorough and easy to follow. Had no idea there were this many parts to clean. I think you even said this wasn't a full disassemble which means there's more steps for a full cyclone clean!?!
Great video Michelle. A lot of people don't take a moment to read the instruction manual that came with their Dyson. They even go to the repair centres with the clogged cannister with dog hair with horrendous odours. They won't empty the cannister, and if they read the manual they would know that if it stopped pulling up dirt check the channel, check the chute for clogs. Check the filters and most importantly DO NOT USE THE VACCUM TO suck up sheeetrock dust, sand. Use a wet dry vac for construction, sheetrock cleanups.
Thank you! I used to prefer bagged vacuums because all this mess didn’t seem worth it, but my Dyson D65 Animal is a real beast - best vacuum I’ve ever owned. It’s worth it to me to go through this process, and I’m not constantly looking for the bags when I need them most.
You’re welcome! I also prefer bagless vacuums. My previous vacuum used a filter I needed to replace every 6 months. It was such a pain to find one. I like the fact the filter in the Dyson can be washed. Thanks for watching.
I couldn't get it with a flathead so I used a little pen knife to snag the end of the spring and line it up. It IS tricky! And you have to make sure that other spring is lined, too.@@stephanievassar4072
You really had me scratching my head over cleaning your Dyson with a paintbrush, indoors. However, you did a fine job of showing the actual steps to clean the Cyclone, details hard to find in other RUclips videos. Bit of a chore to disassemble, clean, and reassemble, but that puts this vacuuming beast back into top shape. Many thanks! 😁
This was exactly what I needed! I never knew how to take it apart. Thank you. Mine looked exactly like yours, before & thankfully after. I did, however use water to clean the parts & let it dry outside. Great video & explanations!
I've owned every animal dyson that has been sold. The entire cyclone can be rinsed/washed. You can literally submerge it in water and let it soak if you choose. Fill with water, agate, rinse extremely well, and let dry for 24 hours at least. Like someone else commented, I place it on top of an air vent to help dry. I would never personally pull it apart. It is an interesting video, though. Also, if you wash it, don't forget to pull out the washable filter and wash it separately, also drying for 24 hours.
thank You, this looks very helpful. now I just need to do it. I'm scared to do it, I worry that I'll screw up something. how often does this need to be done? I've not found Info how to clean the cyclone in the instruction-manual, so thank You ever so much!! best regards.
I can't stand when vacuums are dirty. I take ours apart and wash these with hot soapy water. We leave the components to air dry. I have another canister to swap out for the dirty one. It seems a bit extreme but we have 2 Belgian Malinois.
I saw another saying to use cold water because hot will stretch and crack any seals. Unless you remove them of course. But apparently the entire thing is "supposed" to be washed with cold.
This is exactly why I prefer a nice bagged vacuum. Don't want to mess with all that. My Miele stays clean and I don't have to spread all that dirt or breath it when I empty it.
It is all washable opening and closing the tabs will wear off soon. Wait till it’s summer wash the whole thing with a hose. What you have done is good if it’s really badly caked up with dust.
👏🏼 nice work! Like new. More people need to take care of their dyson’s like you do. Definitely wear that mask, or have a fan or breeze blowing the opposite direction of you 😷!
Thank you! I’m glad I was able to get inside the cyclone to get out all the hidden and lingering dust. It was pretty dusty cleaning out the cyclone. Next clean out I’m definitely going to go outside or in the garage to avoid the dust floating around the house.
Well...Many people criticize vacuum cleaners with a water filter, but in the end you still wash any vacuum cleaner with water to give it a good clean. but when you wash the canister of a vacuum cleaner with a water filter, you are not breathing dust.
This is the method that I have been using for years without any problems : I remove the inside filter and wash it with water , take the hole cyclone outside and wash it with the water hose (or run your tub water inside if you want to wash it using warm water) wash everything and let it dry overnight. Next morning put everything back together and Voila! Using your method with time the plastic will brake and replacing parts form Dyson is almost as expensive as buying a new machine. Sorry I don't recommend your smelly and dangerous method of disassembling the entire cyclone.

No I’ve taken mine apart loads and not broken yet you just have to be careful.
Any advice on how to get the spring back in place? Might need a video on that alone! :)
Did you ever figure out the spring? I’m stuck on that problem.
Oh my god my roommate vacuumed water using my dyson!!! The inside had MUD. This video saved my life thank you
You could totally disassemble cyclone
Same. I had mud that smelled like a dead animal in there. I disassembled and soaked everything with water. It's clean but let's see if I can put it all back

Thank God for this video. My Dyson stunk so badly I wanted to heave it out. The Cure!!!
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to make it and helping all of us out.
Good video! Where does the small spring go and how do we get it back in? Mine fell out, but I can’t figure out how to get it back in
Same problem. I have the spring but I can't seem to get the piece back on with it in place?
How do you get the spring back in on reassembly?
I’ve had to use the flathead to hold the spring back on the button while lining it up with the tab on the unit. It’s tricky, but doable.

Thanks for posting this video, now I’m fully convinced why Miele Vacuums is the way to go
Yes. I have a Miele. Definitely head and shoulders above my Dyson but I keep the Dyson for the basement :)
God I wish I would have known that before buying a Dyson. Hate mine. @@LisaHarrison

Thank you so much - the instruction manual is limited and I now have a very clean Dyson!
I did full rip down and washed wirh soap and water. Let it dry for a few days. Just like new.
how did you get that little gray button spring back in?
Great tips and video.nice to see you back .
Great video, excellent information. Followed these instructions and I have an awesomely clean Dyson. Very very helpful. Thanks

How the hell do I get the spring for the grey catch to go back on !!??
I never got mine to stay on - did you figure something out?
You have to put the spring on the button then hold it back with the flathead while lining it up with the tab on the unit. Tricky, but doable.
Thanks for this info. Really helped.
I probably could have figured this out on my own, but the video was helpful in saving me some time! Thank you!
Fantastic tutorial Michelle 🤩🤩🦋
Yah but how do you put the spring back in the sliver button
Great explanation! Thanks 😊
Thank u so much for uploading this video it helps me a lot so thank u so much appreciate your patience for braking it down Step by Step
THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart!!!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching.
Oh dear 😳 Thank you very much indeeeeeeed 🙏 This is exactly I wanted to know, finally I found your video🤩👍👍👍👍👍

What do you recommend?
@@ashton583 depending on how much you want to spend but id say Sebo, Miele, or Riccar. On the low end a hoover bagged model or an oreck.
Imo this really isn't difficult. But to each their own I guess. I like that this one comes apart so easily so that you actually CAN deep clean it all.
So satisfying to watch your amazing thanks alot for this video it helped alot
Thank you! This was super helpful!
Thank you so much. Much appreciated ❤️

yours is DC66, mine is DC40. should the procedure still be the same? thank You. regards.
When I take apart my Dyson DC41 I blow the dust out with a air compressor

can I just remove the mesh, without removing the entire thing? regards.
thank you so much for your video helps me a lot 🤗🥰

Thanks! This was perfect
I spray that down with a hose.
