Live from John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, Los Angeles, CA
Northern Stars, an Evening with Rufus Wainwright.
Giving his only U.S. performance of Northern Stars, in honor of Canada’s 150th Anniversary, and first performance in Los Angeles in three years, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright sings an intimate evening of curated songs by Canadian musical icons Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen, among others.
Through all these years, ive must of heard this song a hundred times. When Rufus sang it, be its like hearing it for the first time. Genius.
Sorry for the screw up comment. I had tears in my eyes from the Beauty of Rufus's voice and talent❤️
It’s like listening to a human Stradivarius. Exquisite.
@@tonyfejeran4536 Wow! I Love that❤️
This is (okay, for me) simply the best version of the song.
Few are as beloved of the Muses as Rufus Wainwright. His talent is constantly astonishing. Doesn't that make just us all so lucky.
Absolutely.
There are no words. This was so beautiful. He is amazing I’m in tears.
This is one of the best performances I heard in my whole life. Rufus is a force of nature and Joni, well, Joni is God.
If you can say someone was born for a particular purpose, Rufus was born to make the world a better place through music. I can't imagine a world without the blessing of his voice. He believes in everything he sings so much it starts to feel as if you are hearing your inner voice. That part of yourself you can't lie to, because it knows all of your joy and pain. In fact, it makes me appreciate my joy and pain knowing I'm not alone with lifes struggles.
Beautifully described, that’s a talent as well, thank you ✨🖖🏻
You have said what i could feel but not describe. Thank you. I would like to quote you in a workshop I'm giving for singers.
@@wildhoneyjazzband9688 Please quote me. Rufus has made a major change in my life. "When all the world is a hopeless jumble and the raindrops tumble all around
Heaven opens a magic lane. When all the clouds
Darken up the skyway there's a rainbow highway to be found .. leading from your window pane....to a place behind the sun, just a step beyond the rain..
Listening with tears in my eyes. This is an amazing rendition. What a heavenly voice and emotional performance. I am gutted.
I never heard his cover before. I have chills all over my body. This man has one of the most amazing voices of all time. Love Rufus
THANXXX.
MET MARTHA & LOUNDON. HEARD THEM BOTH, SO GENEROUS AND ALL .
FOR ME BROTHER AND SON , H’S THEIR WARM DIVA OF GENIUS AND LIFE AND LOVE AND TENDERNESS AND UNBEARABLE SOUL OF BEAUTY HAPPINESS PROFOUND PAIN. 🙏MELANIE DENIRO
A true, pure and amazing beautiful strong voice at the same time modest; one of the greatest artists no doubt, i enjoy and adore his way of being himself; a man who is not afraid to show his sensitivity give s courage and inspiration to live, thank u Rufus!
What a voice! So clear and so full of depth. I love this version. It never fails to bring me to tears. So much meaning in his interpretation.
I've heard Rufus before but he seems to be getting better as he gets older, what a voice!
Heard him sing this in Amsterdam. He brought the house down.
I have loved Joni Mitchell's work passionately for 50 years, but never stopped to listen to the lyrics of this song as breathtaken as I do now.
Unbelievable, magical ❤ 🙏
What a man and what a voice sung with such feeling thanks Rufus
So good. Rad pianist too.
Thanks for sharing ✨🖖🏻
Just WOW
Thank you for sharing ❤
There could never be a RW tribute act, a unique, impossible to replicate voice.
Rufus, simply sublime.
Is there anything this man cant sing? I think not! He is just perfection squared by a billion’
Thank you!
I love how he made it a theatre piece.
This is breathtakingly beautiful. Thank you.
I really don't get all the covers of this songs at hyper-lightspeed. They almost make it sound happy. But from the chords to the melody to actually listening to the lyrics, this song is pain incarnate. It takes covers like this to shine light on emotional content of this song.

I completely agree, he does such a beautiful cover full of angst and emotion. I knew it was going to be special when I saw he’d covered this song, he didn’t disappoint. What a beautiful voice he has. ❤️
Rufus has such an amazing voice. I’m shocked he doesn’t have more mainstream commercial success, but I’m also glad he’s not some huge [whatever genre he is] star.
Oh god isn't he wonderful the beautiful rufus
Beautiful voice! True and amazing talent...
Beautiful
What a tremendous performance!
Rufus sang this last night Melbourne Recital Centre.... Have heard this sung so badly over the years - Thank You Rufus! Gave us goosebumps & you could have heard a pin drop in the auditorium. Come back soon.....
What a beautiful performance by Rufus of this amazing and timeless gem by the High Priestess of Song, Joni Mitchell . So sensitive, so poignant . GL, Sr.
He’s one of a kind,a voice both beautiful and emotionally moving (deeply) I spent the night listening to more of him (and more of him)!!!
Ah man he got me, so beautifully done x
This is a very nice cover by Rufus from the depths of his gut. Love this song.
I am listening to this and him singing with Sting! I can finally understand the words and love his passion.
While I understand his wish to write originals ...this is fantastic ! Thank you, Rufus !
Magnificent!
Thank you for sharing this.
Amazing voice!!! and rendition!!!
Lovely
Brilliant cover of this classic.........this is the pace it was meant to be sung at. He's a great artist, always developing his style. A proper chip off the old block.....his old man Loudon Wainwright WII and mother Kate McGarrigle......oh and sister Martha Wainwright. What a singer/song writing dynasty he belongs to. Listen to 'Rufus was a tit man'.......one of his dad's off the wall numbers.
Always picture Joni sitting in a diner in Detroit, smoking away while writing this. If the music doesn't pause to puff and ash...start another cigarette or get more coffee ....
Amazing voice! Gorgeous man pur Rufus
While I was not at this performance, I was privileged to attend Rufus' two shows in Montreal last week, at Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Secours. It is always a joy to listen to Rufus, whether he is singing or speaking.
Incredible 😲😲
He pours himself into this song. A great song with a passionate singer, just incredible
Magnificent, just magnificent
WHATEVER YOU RECORDED THIS VIDEO ON the sound is so pristine, this sounds like a live album almost, im blown away, also this performance is sick which also helps lol
Wow!
Amazing videos! Was there last night also. So happy someone with skills (of which I have none) captured some of this amazing show. Thank you!
Good Jesus!
Ok. It's a Little theatrical, but that is Rufus. Love him.
Devastating
The cicadas sing with him !
This was his only US concert of his Northern Stars show. It featured songs from only Canadian artists. I was lucky to go, but it was an odd show. Right across the street is the world famous Hollywood Bowl which also held a concert that night. Both are outdoor venues, so you could hear their 17,500 fans applaud and cheer over our 1200 fans at Rufus's show throughout the night. Rufus had a tinge of jealousy in his comments...saying how 'we should be across the street' and something to the effect of 'we're on the wrong side of the street'....and stuff like that all night. Then when it came time to do his Joni Mitchell songs he told of how his mother hated Joni Mitchell and would not allow her albums to be played in their house when he was growing up (another bit of jealousy he presumed). Then he did a Neil Young song and said how HE hated Neil Young and his music and had to 'search' thru his catalog to even find a song he liked (Harvest Moon). The show was filmed for a 'future' concert film, but Rufus was not at his best that night, so I think it may have been shelved. He was disheveled and had to do a few starts and stops on songs. He had just flown in from New York and was rushed from the airport to the concert so he was not as prepared as I've seen him in numerous concerts before.
Actually, he did an excellent Northern Stars show at St. Ann’s Warehouse in New York City.
❤
Put some pep in it boys, sounds like a funeral dirge
Four people have their entitlement to be wrong.
He fucking meant every word didn't he?
yes he did
Really way too slow for my taste. I find it hard to keep focussed.
ugh - must be an acquired taste
I love you Rufus, but shave.
Hahaha
Whoever playing the piano should be replaced. They almost ruined it.
