I have a story I feel like sort of relates to this
A few months ago, in the beginning of April, I attempted suicide by overdose. When researching what would happen and when, I was told that I wouldn't die for 3-5 days. Despite that, the next morning I woke up feeling like I could die any second- because I knew for sure with how much I took that I would die. In my panic my feelings flipped completely; I suddenly wanted to live and I regretted it so horribly. I just wrote a poem about my experience and changes of feelings because this video inspired me, and the last line feels so important.
"There is no state of panic that can match the feeling of knowing you’re about to die."
Knowing that everything I've ever known was about to come to an end and I was going to find out the scary unknown of whatever happens after death is terrifying. This is the best way I can describe the panic I felt that changed my mind. Even through the most painful, incapacitating stomach pains in my whole life as my liver was about to shut down, I was finally grateful to be alive. A near-death experience like mine really is life changing. My entire outlook on life has flipped around because of how horrifying the feeling before death is.
Sorry that I don't know which parts to exclude to shorten this; it all felt important. Hope this is meaningful to somebody. Things can get better.

Reminds of this great poem fromt the show Bojack Horsman that really changed my perspective on suicides attempts.
      "The weak breeze whispers nothing.
      The waters scream sublime.
      His feet shift teeter-totter.
      Deep breath, stand back.
      It's time.
      Toe's untouch the overpass.
      Soon he's water bound.
      Eyes locked shut.
But peak to see the view from Halfway Down".
      "A little wind.
      A Summers sun.
      River rich and regal.
      A flood of fond endorphins.
Brings a calm that knows no equal.
      You're flying now".
"You see things much more clear than from the ground.
It's all okay, it would be.
Were you not now Halfway Down.
      Thrash to break from gravity.
What now could slow the drop?
All I'd give for toes to touch the safety back at top".
"But this is it, the deed is done.
      Silence drowns the sound.
      Before I leaped I should've seen.
      The View From Halfway Down".

    • @naquinja
      @naquinja Месяц назад

I to understand the message this quote is trying to convey but I hate it because it disregards a living creature's will & desire to continue living on.
A lifeless object would not care if it was alive or dead because it has no objectives, no will of its own, no consciousness. It exist merely as a prop of the universe. A living creature, after experiencing life, will do what it can to stay alive, at least for as long as it takes to produce more of itself. I assume this desire to live becomes even stronger the more consciously aware the living being, seeing as we think about it on occasion without necessarily being in immediate danger.
As a conscious, living being, I do not wish to return to a state of lifelessness, as I have experienced what being alive is & have been spoiled by what it means to be a collection of lifeless objects, taking control of the way I interact with the universe around me.

This subject started getting to me when my mom approached 70. She's going to be 72 in November. It was one of the things I talked to my then new girlfriend about in 2019 when we first met. Little did I know, less than 5 years later I'd lose her to heart failure after an almost 3 month battle in a Boston hospital. She didn't know she was going to die until only less than 2 weeks beforehand... the entire rest of her hospital stay, the cardio team was absolutely planning on her going home. Her heart just gave up at the last minute, and she, only turning 33 a week before death, had to come to grips with the reality of non-existence. She took it in stride, she was a bit scared at first, understandably, but accepted it. She even pulled her own "plug". told the docs to pull her heart meds. That's where I sat next to her for 3 days and had to say goodbye to the love of my life as I watched her heart give up on her. It was the most heartbreaking thing I'll ever go through. That being said, it makes me not just fear not existing anymore, and wonder where my Ally is... but appreciate every moment I'm alive from now on, even though it's been incredibly painful going on without her. Being together over 70 years... that makes it seem unimaginable to lose that soulmate... but Ally was the only real love I've ever had after many in my 35 years. I'd give anything to be able to grow old with her, even if it meant losing her someday. That someday came WAY too soon, and in a way that hurts even more, not knowing what could have been. When you find your love, you find them, and I wonder how I'll feel in a few decades, because I know I'll still be thinking of her. Growing old together, it means less time for one of you to live without the other. When they're taken young, you have to live almost a lifetime without them. Which is worse? Losing someone you connected with for decades? Or losing someone you fell in love with, and have to live without for decades? No one will ever know the answer to that I think.

Edit* I put something at the bottom, press read more :)
I've had this fear since I was 8 years old, when I first started to understand what life is. Every single night before I go to bed, I shake in my bed because I know i'm going to die. I spend roughly 6 hours a day, thinking about death. It hurts me, and causes me so much pain and anxiety. I don't want to stop being able to experience kissing, or hugging, or seeing smiles on the faces of people, experiencing hardship, overcoming challenge, meeting new people, going to new places. I hate thinking about it, but it's all I can think about.
I know i'm only 19 years old, and I have plenty of life left, but man, I feel like i'm just counting down my days. It brought me comfort knowing that someone my age feels the same way, so I appreciate you for that Joe. Everywhere I go, I look at old people, and I think, damn. That's going to be me. And when I get to that point, I can't go back. I can't un-age myself. I think about the eventual passing of my parents, thinking about the eventual void that they will be in when they pass, and virtually everything I love. I hope there's a God, but everything in my head points to that not being true, and that scares me so bad.
11:20 really stuck with me. I tell everyone all the time that I feel this. And it feels like nobody understands it. I tell them that I'm essentially projecting my own fears onto someone else's fate, and I feel such an incredible amount of dread thinking about it. This was a really dark message, but ultimately I'm appreciative that I found someone else that feels the same way.
Sorry for the long comment 😭Just had to say it
Edit: I had no idea this many people related to this fear. The amount of people replying and leaving their words of support has really helped calm me down. The overall fear hasn't left, but I feel less alone, so thank you guys ♥

My fear of death is because we don't truly know what happens. There might be an afterlife, we might be reborn, or there truly could be nothing for all of eternity. The latter is the one I fear the most, because I still want to be able to experience life after death, meet loved one who have passed, or to be able to experience life once again with a new outlook.

My dad died at the age of 52 in a motorcycle accident. He was the healthiest person I knew. And just one wrong turn, and he was gone.
Listening to everyone around me, them talking about where he might be now. And there I am, just thinking that the person that was my father no longer exists in any capacity.
Yet, I still can’t push myself to belief in something after death. I’m curious how others handle such a thing? I’d say I’m handling it decently, I’m trying to figure out what I wanna do to establish my permanence.

Listen man, it’s your mind, your body, etc. You can do anything you want and believe in anything you want. I get that it’s hard to believe something more on the supernatural side, however there is one thing I have to say. I personally, accept Jesus Christ as my lord and savior. If you didn’t know, what he did for me, you, and ALL of us, he died on the cross, then defeated death and sin, and he rose again 3 days later and took all the pain and suffering so that way if we put our hope and faith into him, we would have eternal life. Jesus loves you more than you will ever know. He has changed my life for the better. It is so comforting knowing that he is here with me at all times and he cares about me. I want you to feel the same way, and Jesus definitely wants that too. Like I added before , I completely respect your beliefs in what ever you want to do. I care for everyone and want everyone to accept Jesus Christ. God loved us so much that he gave his only begotten son to die on the cross for us. We are all sinners, however Jesus was not a sinner. We will all sin sometime and that’s why it’s good to ask for forgiveness. Here’s the thing getting to heaven is not through good works, however accepting Christ, and believing in him comes with trying not to live in a life of sin, although it’s not possible because we are not perfect. I really want you to feel the same way I do about our creator. He loves you so much, and I promise you that. In Jesus name I ask that you keep an open mind to this. If you did read all of this, I want to thank you for taking the time to do so😊Just remember what Jesus did for all of us and have a blessed day❤️

Whenever I think of Christianity, I get scared, frightened, about the fact that hell is a place and it is possible you can end up there for eternity. It still scares me. And the other belief that there is simply nothing after death also scares me. Im still young. I haven’t even finished school yet. But this haunts me. the most comforting thing about death is that the human mind is incapable of processing and understanding things like infinity and non-existence. It's why you can't even begin to imagine how big space is, it is impossible. So why worry about something that i can't control and am going to worry about no matter what. I would rather enjoy my moments than worry about something that i literally can't understand.

Change terrifies me more than death.
I’m not religious, and I don’t cling to any particular beliefs. To me, death feels like the unknown-a vast, quiet nothingness. Yet, sometimes, I can’t help but revisit the innocence of childhood, where I once imagined death would lead me to my own little world, a place just for me. But now, as I stand here in the present, it's not death itself that haunts me-it's change.
The first time I truly feared death was when I lost someone close to me. But in that loss, it wasn’t just death that frightened me. It was the realization that life itself was shifting, transforming in ways I couldn’t control. We live believing that things will stay the same forever, wrapped safely inside our little bubble of familiarity. Everything feels like it will be okay, like time will always be on our side. But then, without warning, life changes. People grow older. The familiar spaces of childhood fade into something new-your room, once a sanctuary of innocence, becomes a workspace for the future you didn’t ask to rush toward. And suddenly, you see how short the time really is.
I’m only 16, but even turning 12 made me realize just how much change terrifies me. The idea that everything I know and hold dear will inevitably transform-it's overwhelming. Death, for all its mystery, feels almost easier to confront. I want to believe that there’s something waiting beyond, but as someone agnostic, I’m left with uncertainty. With so many religions and beliefs, it’s hard to know where to place my trust. I’m left standing in the middle, unsure of what to hold on to, hoping to find answers in a world that never stops changing.
I know change is nature and everyone goes through it differently, but its something I havent coped well with for a long time.
(now of course if its a life or death situation Im going to fear being killed, but you get my point)

I can relate 100% Change is completely normal but It's something that is still unsettled with me.
Im an atheist so I dont know what to expect when death hits, but I can agree I wish things would stay the same forever even though after a while It might get boring, but then you look back on what you didnt want to change, whether it be loosing a parent or a kid, loosing a loved one or a pet, failing an exam, failing your career.
      Or even loosing childhood.
Its something not alot of people are ready to cope with, and with you being still so young, all I can say is to keep going man, I can understand it might be hard, but you have to push

i relate to this so much. i always think about "how does society function? do people really not question "why do we all decide to get up every day and go to work?"
my parents do not question a thing. they do everything they do because "thats just what you do."
and if they do question it all, they cling onto the bible. religion is an easy, comforting answer.
when i was maybe 8 i spoke to my friend on the bus on the way back to school after a field trip
i said "do you ever think about the fact that this is all here" why do we exist? why does anything even anything at all? we could just as easily not exist, we are a blip in oblivion.
i continued to think about how people pour so much time and energy to achieve things that only have manmade value. my mom spoke to me about how she felt she had not done anything with her life since her coworker had 2 more college degrees than her. I told her that those are achievments with manmade value. they do not matter. except, they do to some people. because if nothing matters then we must create our own meaning right? this is why people decide to get up every day and go to work. this is why people do what they do and keep a bible on them so that if they do question it all, their answer is just a hand reach away.

Yeah I fwt. My great grandma just passed away last year from Alzheimer’s on top of other things. A couple months before she passed my great grandpa passed from brain cancer. My great grandma felt like it was her fault for some reason and just gave up. It was easily the saddest experience I’ve had. Just watching someone you love wither away with nothing you could do about it. She ended up living with us for a few months so we got to make good memories before she passed. I’m also a Christian so I believe in heaven and that is definitely more comforting at certain times. But it’s still sad knowing that something like that could happen in the blink of an eye. My dad likes the saying tomorrows never promised, and it definitely is something to keep in mind as you’re going throughout your day.

The day it happens, the moment we lose consciousness, there isn’t any fear to be felt, not because it’s not scary, but because nothing will exist. That’s ironically what is scary is nothing, but when there is nothing we aren’t anything at all.

Life and death are complicated concepts. We think life is just living, and death is just dying, but we don’t know what life brings or death. It’s valid to stress about death and to think about it naturally because we are mortal, and we witness/realize it exists. I’m glad I saw this video. I won't pretend to even remotely have it figured out or act like I know how I want to view it, whenever the topic comes up in my mind I try to immediately avoid it because well i'm young and don't want to acknowledge just how quick everything for me can end. but this video was a little different and I think that could be in part to having it talked about by a creator I like and frequently watch, and seeing that despite the kinda upbeat obnoxious yet grounded in reality type of character talk a bit about his views on the same type of thing helps make it easier to think about rather than "why is nobody else thinking this". I am agnostic, and the fact that I will never truly know what happens after death immensely frustrates me. I lean towards Buddhism and I think I believe in some sort of reincarnation, but as Joe said, I think a Buddhist who has reached nirvana is one of the few that would be completely comfortable with death. Part of me believes we are living to find out what happens after death. Living to die, essentially. But my physical mind and body will never know what happens after death, because even if my soul lives on, MYSELF, my brain, the body that is typing this, will be gone. I want nothing more than to be comfortable with death, but I think the reason I fear death is because there’s so many possibilities as to what could happen after. And for life, for existence, for my own being to end? What would an afterlife feel like? What would nirvana feel like? Would I long to live my life as I currently am, existing, sitting on my couch? I really do want to be in eternal peace, with my lord, whoever or whatever it may be, if there is a lord, however I also do not want my life and existence on earth to end. Also the fact that 100 years from now, I will be entirely forgotten is absolutely terrifying.
Sorry if this is kind of all over the place. I hope there’s at least one person out there that sees what I mean and agrees.

I don’t know why you people want to believe so bad that he is gonna convert to Christianity. He also explicitly said in the video that he is learning more about different religions, and he’s already not satisfied with a lot of the explanations that religions (besides religions like Buddhism, which he is looking into at the moment) have given for everything. I assume this would include Christianity, because it’s one of the largest religions so I’m sure he already knew a lot about it, and learned a bit more before moving on to find a religion that better fits him.

The reason I'm not scared of death is becasue I belive their will be no pain. If you think about when you first gained conciousness, when you first gained the ability to remeber you were probably around the age of 4 or 5, but then if you think ot before that you remember nothing and you also felt nothing, you didn't feel pain you were just kind of waiting to be existing. I think that this is not the only life that we all have all lived, its the only one that we are remebering. I think to myself why am I remebring this life, this moment and maybe I am dead already and this is just me going through my memories whilist I was alive. Maybe when we die it would be like a dream, it feels like a second then maybe we will be born into a new life, a new universe or maybe even something else that we don't know of in this life.

It's weird to see joe be sad because he is the person who makes you laugh and say some of the most funniest things I could ever think of. But for the first time, I think he shared some deep stuff, and he didn't make fun of any of it. Love your kids man keep it up❤❤❤❤

as someone who’s had many near death experiences; when you’re in that “this is it” moment at least for me i’m always super calm and almost just accepting the outcome. now obviously i’ve never died so idk how it is right as you’re dying but being on the edge plenty of times definitely gives me an idea of what dying would be like for me and i think it’d be calm and an acceptance that i can’t do anything to stop what’s going to happen

I’m glad that I do, as it makes me less afraid of death. Like if you’re Christian you believe that there isn’t nothingness after death, but eternal happiness and life. So being Christian makes me less scared.

please post more of these. one of my favorite songs lyrics comes into my mind it’s parabola by tool. the lyric: “Twirling 'round with this familiar parable
Spinning, weaving 'round each new experience
Recognize this as a holy gift and
Celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing
A chance to be alive and breathing.
This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality
    Embrace this moment, remember
We are eternal, all this pain is an illusion” this is beautiful to me. i have struggled with many issues in my life and i know a lot of people have but this is just proof to keep going. one day one hour one second at a time. i do believe in something of an afterlife but i have strayed away from being raised as a devout catholic as i just couldn’t deal with some things being taught. being taught to put loads of shame upon yourself if you aren’t perfect or holy enough. and i’m somewhat in between religions as well. i will likely stay christian but i truly think that people shouldn’t have to subscribe to a religion to believe in god. why can’t we have our own thoughts and beliefs and feelings? just remember, life is a gift. we don’t know who is giving us this gift, but we are here nonetheless. relish it. live your life your way. we are all one body of human. no one is lesser or above. stay true to yourself. and most importantly LOVE YOURSELF.

this joe vid actually had me thinking… just sitting on my lunch break at chipotle… what weird is usually i’m laughing at a joe vid but this one…. i didn’t even smile one bit… i just took it all in. I’m a christian and actively go to church… but it’s still so hard to wrap my head around death and losing my family and friends in the next 50 years…and i still don’t stop and realize how special each moment is but this helped me. Crazy how fast this is all going to go.

I gotta say Joe, I don’t normally comment on any videos, but this video really did just make me sit back and really think. I always don’t like think about death because of the unknowns , but I do like the fact that it makes you realize how small you are and to just cherish every moment you have. Good vid Joe!
