    For Resolve 18 - this workflow also works. If you are having a resolution issue (your render is not as sharp as the direct output from Insta360 Studio), here is the potential problem and solution: 1. Make sure you have the Paid Studio Version of the Resolve that allows your input above 4K video. 2. Make sure your input file is the highest quality output from Insta360 Studio - 360 Video / 5760 X 2880 / ProRes 422 MOV file. 3. Set your Project Settings to the same resolution as the input file IMPORTANT! So let's say you are making 9 by 16 IG Reel - use 3240 x 5760 as your project settings / timeline settings (Format and Output Taps). Turn on SuperScale and make sure the sharpen and denoise turn to HIGH. Fusion uses your timeline settings as resolution scaling. In the delivery tap, you can set it back to 1080 x 1920 - you just need to make sure output source from your edit tap is the highest resolution as it can be - 3240 x 5760 for 9 by 16. This will make sure your Resolve output has crazy good quality. Again, this might be overkilled but if you want the best output, do that!

    Thanks Hugh for all the videos and tutorials you‘ve posted so far. I really learned a lot from them.
    Now I have this question: If I need this special plugin „Reframe 360“ in Order to edit videos from a 360 camera (I have a QooCam 8K) in the free version of Davinci Resolve, does this mean that I DON‘T need this plugin, when I use the STUDIO version of Davinci Resolve 18?
    In that case could you tell me HOW I can edit my 360 videos in this great software or where I may find this information?

    How are you dealing with quality loss? My videos are looking awful, very pixelated. I've tried using Reframe360XL and it's way better for animating keyframes since it's OpenFX based and not Fusion, so you can view keyframes in the timeline. However it suffers from the same problem: Bilinear filtering is too low when adjusting field of view.

    Hi Hugh,
    nice tutorial. But the Reframe plugin reduces a 360° video to a flat video when rendered. The 360° video is lost, so that 360° video can no longer be seen in VR glasses. To get a 360° video, you should stick to PANOMAP. You should mention this in your videos at the beginning, that the plugin transforms from 360° to flat.

    Hello Hugh I wonder if you have seen this problem? When I export a 5.6k Cineform (max bitrate) from GoPro player, the resulting video looks great if I watch it back in the Player itself. However when I drag the video into Resolve Studio the footage looks less sharp and colourful, even before I add any plugins. Now I if reframe some 360 footage in the GoPro player and output a 1080p Cineform MOV file, that looks great both in the Player and in Resolve! It seems that on my PC (Ryzen 5900X + Nvidia 3080), Resolve is doing something to the 2:1 MOV file which reduces its quality 🤷
    EDIT! Sorry to spam you! I just started a trial of Premiere Pro and the 2:1 MOV file looks colourful and sharp there... definitely looks worse in Resolve for me so I will keep trying to work it out.
    EDIT 2! Found it! Just not sure how to fix it. The default Zoom level in the Inspector for my clip is - of course - 1.00. Set it to 0.5, and this image will look worse/pixelated). However set it to around 3.00 and I get back the lost detail from the MOV file! The problem is that Karta VR cannot work with a clip that's been zoomed in the Inspector. Still working on it. Sorry for the epic length of this comment 🤣
    EDIT 3: OK last rambling update I hope! It's all to do with Timeline resolution... I usually make a 1440P Timeline for my videos (and output at the same res.), but if I start a new 4K timeline and import my 2:1 MOV file, the image is noticeably less pixelated/more detailed than at 1440p. The final 4K MP4 looks better than the 1440p version too. Maybe this seems obvious now! I tested this with my old Insta360 One X 2:1 files too and I see the same results... sadly it means my last three years of One X videos which i uploaded to YT were not as good looking as they could have been because of the resolution I was using 😟
    I'll go away now! Congrats on hitting 100k, that is very well deserved 🎉🥳

    Hugh, what do you think of using the desktop Insta360 to quickly frame (with speed ramping etc) , then exporting ProRes422 to Resolve to polish? Karta is amazing, but the ease of reframing and animating in the desktop app outshines the manual process in Resolve. I get that to reframe you'd have to use the app and export again, but this is actually faster than exporting full res equirectangular and then generating proxies in Resolve for me.
    I've been running tests and am having a hard time finding a big difference in how karta or the 360 apps handle sampling when it comes to 1080 output, but wanted to get your take on the downside of this workflow.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  3 года назад +2

    Hi Hugh. Love your tutorials - but I believe there is an error in this one. At 5:19 you enter 1080 x 1920 in the Processing entry. This results in terrible low-rez output - I had basically given up on using DaVinci Resolve to edit 360 video. I just saw in a more recent tutorial (How to Film & Edit 360 Video - DaVinci Resolve VR Editing In-Depth Tutorial - at 15:13) you say that the Processing entry should be the actual resolution of the camera - 5760 x 2880 in the case of an X2. This makes all the difference in the world! Thought you would like to know about this misleading tip. Doug Knutson

    I'm unable to use the mouse to simply move the image around when using davinci resolve with the Karta plug in. It limits you to using the dials in the effect panel. This seems counter intuitive compared to the Insta 360 Studio application. In Insta360 studio I can easily create half a dozen keyframe along my timeline is seconds, It would take way longer in Davinci Resolve to to the same amount.

When video/photo is loaded and view as 360 surround I have 4 options to change view. I never thought how 360 image in quest or viewing on flat screen is corrected that there is no distorion there are straight lines. Some photos or even vidoes uoloaded to RUclips are not distored. So they are displayed as " normal view". And as i suppose viewing 360 Video in headset distortions are corrected - displayed as "normal view". I suppose if it were not corrected they would be displayed as fisheye view and we would see curved lines. I dont talk about interal barrel distortion of quest lenses .Just wonder why fisheye view is default in insta360 for 360 video/ photo and not normal view?? Am I right with my assumptions? I know It is all about viewing portion of sphere on smartphone or headset but is essentialy not the same as viewing painted dome in real building. View dome must be distored bacause of curvature.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  3 года назад +1

      It does as you load a 5.7K into Resolve, resolve force downsize it into 4K to process. So you lost quality there on the force downsizing. You can see the process happening clearly in Fusion page. So yes, it does affect your quality like 1.7K lower source. Might be not a big deal but can be a big deal if you are aiming for RUclips 16:9 or Feature film delivery.

    Thanks again for this great video! I am still a bit puzzled....With the Gopro Max I can export via the player into a 5.7K HEVC file. Next I could start and edit this into Davinci. But what is the purpose or reason or difference in quality, if you export in 4K? or export in 1080p? then you could also import a 4K file from the Max? So the real question.......what is the benefit (and real visual comparison) between the 5.7K vs 4K? This also because after export you either watch your result on a 4K monitor, or 4K TV.....

    Hello Hugh and thanks for the detailed tutorial! I got a question though (maybe a bit stupid but I just switched to DaVinci): Do I understand right, that the Insta360 Files (.insv) can not be imported directly into Resolve? Do I need to convert them first somehow? If yes? How? - Thanks in advance for your time and effort!

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  3 года назад +1

      Yes the insv file can NOT be import directly into Insta360. But I will also STRONGLY suggest do not import the insv file directly into Adobe Premiere even it has a 3rd party plugin from Insta360. If Insta360 has update it will break the linkage inside Premiere and your whole working project will be toasted. So I highly suggest using the FREE Insta360 Studio to convert everything into ProRes and never touch Insta360 software again - let the professional NLE handle the rest. Mixing H265 within NLE with 3rd party codec is a receipt for disaster lol. ProRes is your best friend as it is widely use by the industry.
