I remember doing something like this with my Dad. My father was a painter who liked sometimes to engrave designs in small sheets of copper, heat them over a flame and then add them to his paintings. Sometimes he would give me pieces of leftover copper to engrave designs of my own and then we would heat them over the kitchen stove and watch the rainbows appear. I hadn't thought about that in years, until I saw this video.
This is truly amazing. I'm taking digital art this spring, hopefully I'll find a unique skill like this to set myself apart from others majoring in art. This gives me motivation.
@@ChildofYAH I think the point they were making is that your course specialises in digital art, so to do something like this, you’d need to take analog art too.

I love flame painting, it's so pretty! I don't do it myself, but that's only because I don't have the space for a metalsmithing setup yet. Also, getting the timing down so precisely isn't easy. Mad props to this guy.

Wow!! Absolutely beautiful! I'm a minimalist working on getting a mini rv or a camper van. This will be my final home! I would love to have a piece of your art once I'm in deco mode. Considering that being in a tiny home choosing items for your home they say " everything needs a dual purpose to take up space". But your clocks are so gorgeous I'd sacrifice the dual purpose for a signature piece.
Could you explain about the oxidation part, if you know. I could see him applying heat with the blow torch thingy and getting different colors, how is that explained scientifically?
I used to do this when I was 17. I worked for an artist that made copper sculptures. We made full sculptures of fish, mermaids, horses, ballerinas, etc.. This was one of the things we did for someone's backsplash in their kitchen. Btw.. If anyone meets an artist by the name of Dave Murphy (not the famous Dave Murphy) who does this sort of thing. You tell him Evan Robinson is still waiting for the few hundred dollars he never paid me.
@@Anione111 No unfortunately I ended up getting into retail construction then diagnosed with cancer in 2013. (I'm cancer free now) I should have invested in the torches and supplies back then and continued making sculptures even after Dave left. I'd probably be rich right now. Lol
@@EvanRobinson85 Oh, no. I guess only a small percentage of people are lucky enough to make a career out of their talent and passion. Llife happens as they say and people have to change tracks. Glad to hear you won the battle against the big C, though 👍🏻. Wish you well.
What this doesn't show is how time consuming this process is. The copper needs to cool between stages or the colours disappear. This takes HOURS and is so hard to do. Just beautiful work!!
One thing that seems to be good about the mass production of everything is that more and more one of a kind handmade art and stuff n things is hitting the market and being sought after.. people are more willing now to look for and pay extra for handcrafted anything.. so that's cool
