How Louis Kahn Perfected The Monument: The Salk Institute

Completed in 1965 in La Jolla California, the institute is a testament to Kahn’s mastery of form, light and spatial organization which reflects a profound understanding of both scientific and aesthetic principles.
The design of the Salk Institute is characterized by its symmetrical composition, featuring two mirror-image laboratory buildings flanking a central plaza. The stark simplicity of the geometric layout belies the complexity of thought behind it. Kahn envisioned a place where scientific inquiry could thrive and every aspect of the design was meticulously considered to foster collaboration, introspection and a connection with the surrounding environment.
