THE PEOPLE'S JOKER Movie Review | Vera Drew | Batman | LGBTQ+

- "The People's Joker" is a wildly original depiction of all things Batman through the distinct prism of director, editor, co-writer and star Vera Drew, who uses the superhero mythology to explore her own transgender journey. It's a parody of the DC Comics universe, with a creative array of storytelling and animation styles, but it's also a personal tale of identity and self-esteem. Bob Odenkirk, Tim Heidecker and Maria Bamford are among the supporting cast. Playing now in New York and Los Angeles but expanding to more cities in upcoming weeks.

Sadly, this is probably one of those things that will remain in my watchlist until I've completely forgotten why I put there and just remove it, because it's highly unlikely that it will ever reach the Finnish shores.
I saw this the other night, it’s bonkers, but it’s pretty good. I asked a friend of mine who works for WB how the hell they got away with it, and apparently it falls under fair use because it’s a parody. The way that it was explained to me, and I could be wrong, is that WB were all up in arms about it at first before they knew exactly what it was but then in the end the general consensus was like “Whatever, who cares, hopefully it’ll just come and go away in one ear and out the other.” 🤷🏻♂️
It's amazing that this exists, right? But that's what the whole disclaimer is about off the top. Glad you saw it!
still no first omen review?
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I have hurd about this ages ago and then it slipped my mind. Now i will seek it out
my friend saw this at TIFF 2 years ago and told me i had to see it!!! in st. louis webster university has a terrific art house film society and they are screening The People’s Joker thursday-sunday next week and i got tickets for the thursday screening!!! so excited!!!
I very curious about this since Fish Jelly reviewed it, I'm glad you covered it too-and it ain't even Tuesday!
Don't you worry, we've got artsy stuff lined up then, too :)
I'm curious too, it looks good.
Saw the movie last year and its so fucking good. Honestly the weird animation and greens screen layering never bothered me, it leans in and makes it work. Main thing i wish was better was the walking in place green screen stuff.
This is unrelated to this video, but I am really looking forward to a review of The First Omen, so I hope you get to watch and review it!
I saw the movie tonight and really liked it for what it was. All the incorperations of seemingly at least 4 different visions on screen i just wish they all gelled better together and i wish it had been more funny considering this was supposed to be a parody. I still really enjoyed this either way and was more amused and also gave the feeling of sadness for the character and how he came to be. I definitely connected to it emotionally in some ways but ya, missed more laughs but I'd give it an 8/10 too Christy. 🔥🔥
Thanks for your thoughts!
I am interested in this. ❤😅 Looking amazing by the way. Will keep saying it every time!
👏👏Yep exactly why we need BAD!!! It sounds like a hoot, I read it will unfortunately probably never get a release here in France, but will keep an eye out just in case!🤷♀
I want to see this so badly! Will I be forced to seek "non-traditional" methods of finding it?
Not at all -- as we said in our review, we have a link in the description to the film's website so you can see where/when it's playing. Hope you enjoy.
Any plans to review The First Omen?
Probably for streaming at this point.
The trailer reminded me of this underrated comedy Elijah Wood produced called The Greasy Strangler.
So it's a RUclips parody video or a Tubi movie?
Honestly, from watching the trailer I have such a hard time understanding how this movie has gotten such good reviews. The production value looks awful in many of the clips they use -- the story and acting would have to be *incredible* to make up for it.
@@andrewteague114 It's because ideology is more important to quality to these people. I'm all for trans stories and subverting genres but there has to be at least a small amount of craftsmanship and decent humour at least.
The only way I can see this Succeed is as an Art House/Indie/The Room situation. Something so bad it is really interesting.
But it's not so-bad-it's-good. It's just good!
What the Hell
This movie was like the scatterbrain segments between commercials on Adukt Swim. I don't mean that in a flattering manner, either.
Well Vera Drew worked for Tim and Eric as an editor for a while, so that's definitely intentional.
@@BreakfastAllDay The problem is what you're describing is not a movie.
Time is valuable people , you don’t have to watch every “movie”
Toxic Maskulinity should by a new superhero-adjacent genre.
Its basically a youtube video. Not really a movie
Trailer looked bad and story seemed prime for mockery
Ugh. This movie makes Troma movies look like high art. Yes, DO make queer movie - but don't make shite that looks like this tripe.
Thanks for your thoughts -- have you seen this yet?
"The People's Joker" What heap of garbage.
I wish we had a system of mechanical royalties where all I.P. is available for fair use, but a portion of the revenue went to the owners of the I.P.
