- In this short 5 min video, I explore if upgrading to Tesla's Premium Connectivity is truly worth it, and share my thoughts on the Model 3's infotainment system.
These videos are a labor of love (hours of editing) but I feel as though sharing my experiences in this way is helping to inform others about all things Tesla. Let me know in the comments what videos you want to see from me next !

You don't have to always reconnect your phone. There was a previous update that allowed you to always stay connected.
I cant find anyone else talking about this online. Or in our manual. Can u send me a link ?
Thanks! I live in the rural US and subscribed mostly for Sentry mode camera access and traffic for when we're urban-bound. All the best
Thanks for watching !
New owner here. Is the subscription needed to keep Sentry Mode on? I have until the 29th on this month.
I'm have fun with the "Live views" and Sentry Mode playback videos of all the people stopping to check the MY and M3. ❤
@@kirivanyam5969 Hey, you'll still be able to turn on Sentry Mode, but Premium Connectivity allows you to view camera's via the App (Live Sentry Mode).
@@RyanCowan Thanks, then I'm going to get the the yearly $99.99 after the expired date since I wanted the features. I notice Phantom drains effects it more with the live Feeds active.
I don't know about other countries, but here the Mobile internet is so expensive, so 10 USD per month for the internet in Tesla si absolutley worth it.
I totally agree Ryan … I’m never in the car when it charges! You are correct with the 20 minutes and the time it takes you to visit the bathroom.
Appreciate the comment ! Always nice to know when someone agrees 😁👍
Got my MY LR last week and used SC for the first time at 17%-85% in 30 minutes. The charging stalls were located about 100 feet away, so a quick Restroom breaks and food orders we came back with 1 minutes left.
Sattelite map and real time traffic information is easily worth the price alone!
Google have satellite map already with others software tho..live traffic view also 😂
CarPlay is a must!
CarPlay will never come as it’ll take away from Teslas own software. They had enough leverage with Apple to get Apple Music and Apple Podcasts. I’m happy enough with that
And…in 4 years of Tesla ownership, I have *never* had to type in my routing or anything else using the keyboard… voice commands have always worked…
Great video, and 0.55-1.20 nice editing different spicy things lol cool. Nice to recap of this. I look forward to fsd video from you soon when it comes to Australia full version and subscription. I have premium connectivity always but I look forward to sentry live lol ,
Thanks Tintuu !!
Honestly, they should do 2 lower tiers, $2/month for live sentry monitoring on the phone, with all the controls, including saving a specified event on the phone from the distance, for making insurance claims easier, in case of hooligans messing with your car while you are somewhere, like a mountain trip, or simply riding your electric bike somewhere when you don't need the features the car brings at that time.
and a $4 or $5 that has the live sentry, but also the maps, and limited RUclips feed to 1080p (or 720p 60fps), because that is the biggest bandwidth gobbling thing.
Any idea which mobile network carries this data? Seems to me that coverage could be something less than stellar for those traveling outside the capital cities, making premium connectivity even less attractive.
Good question, if anyone knows the answer to this let me know. The data we got when travelling regionally seemed to be fine.
@@RyanCowan Telstra for AU, works out well as my mobile is with Optus, so I can hotspot that on roadtrips where signal is poor for Telstra and still stream music.
Thank you for sharing. This is quite useful to me as I am awaiting my MYP delivery.
Thanks ☺ Congrats on the soon-to-arrive Model Y ! Keep in mind premium connectivity now includes Live Sentry view, which may be more appealing now.
@@RyanCowan Thank you again. I will subscribe to the premium connectivity for that feature. Cheers
Well crafted words … thanks for posting this.
I think I need this because I take my mom to go because she go grocery shopping and it take long so I can watch on the screen instead of wasting my phone data.
100%!! 😂
I honestly don’t think it will ever be worth it until they let you stream while driving. I understand the whole safety concern, but I still call BS. Give me a warning safety notice to agree to and let me do with my car as I want.
I wish Tesla would have the Premium connectivity items split pricing. I am interested in the cool looking graphic navigation maps, but I really don't need the Internet, Music, Carokee, or Streaming in my vehicle. I all do that on my PC at home. Except for the nice maps, you can't watch movies or browse the internet while driving. And i am single and retired.
Another reason is I am only in a vehicle for very short trips and do my charging only at home.
I know 10 dollars per month is not that much, but if I don't use it, why pay for it in the first place.
Just my thoughts. Make the "graphic maps only" a special pricing which can be used while driving. I think the radio works without premium (not sure), that is all I would need. If I find a dire need for some of this stuff, and YES, I can always pay 10 dollars for a month and then cancel when not really needed.
Last, i don't have a good enough smart phone to work good enough with the connectivity. But works just fine for calling and texting.
I use apple music and the navigation uses internet for traffic and stuff so i would need it
Update: I've now subscribed to Premium Connectivity 😅 As you say, Apple Music and now also live sentry mode is a game changer for us.
Good review Ryan!
Ok, so it’s only data, not limiting artificially access to Netflix. In this case, a techy person could easily setup a Mikrotik LtAP system and avoid the subscription
loved this video no where i have seen actually says anything about using your phone data so thanks for that. hopefully be ordering my model 3 soon fingers crossed.
Thanks for the watching ! Glad you got something out of it. Very excited for you to be ordering a model 3 soon !
I'll sign up just for the Caraoke app alone ha. Btw, where did you get that sweater? It's dope.
haha thanks mate, the sweater was from our online clothing brand HALT. We are hoping to bring back the brand soon 🙌
does sentry mode work without premium connectivity? Just without live view?
Does the premium download Tesla software updates? I was under the impression that Tesla stations were equipped with hotspots.
Just buy the annual subscription which is $20 USD cheaper than doing the monthly sub.
Don't think we have that available in Australia yet, will keep an eye out for it.
Would have been nice and also a common-sense thing to throw in at the end how you sign up for those who don't know
I just want to know how difficult or easy it is owning a tesla in Sydney without being able to charge at home.
Nice one Ryan, I can definitely see why you're not quite ready for it yet....mine is a no-brainer as my company are paying for it so I'm lucky that way! Hope you are both well mate, and thanks for the vid. Marcus
Thanks Marcus ! That's a no-brainer for sure 😂 How good ! Hope you're well too mate.
Agreed 💯
does the Premium Connectivity comes with a Tesla spotify premium account?
YES!
can you do it month to month to subscribe to the premium connectivity or its a yearly contract? also what do you mean by you always have to connect when you are in the car? can you still drive, lock and unlock using the iphone with or without premium connectivity?
is sentry mode out in Australia yet?
Hey Ryan, you mention Boombox in this video. Is the hardware (external speaker) even installed in the models available in Australia? If not it will need more than an update to the premium subscription software.
Yep, I'd need to take it in to Tesla to get this added. I think it's around $700 to retrofit.
Are Tesla seat really small or is the female passenger super tall since her knees is above the dashboard 😮
Very informative videos and contents. +1 Sub 😊
THANK YOU ! 🥰
Hey Ryan, do the remote control features like climate control still work without PC?
Yeah
So as long as you connect to the mobile hotspot of your phone, you don't need to pay for the Tesla subscription?
Correct for some things, other things like live sentry mode will not work from that app without the subscription
What color tint is your moon roof?
20 minutes to charge your car is really setting a high expectations. Realistically around 35 min
Our average supercharging time is 12 mins after almost 3 years of ownership. Very rare to be to stopping for 35 mins unless you're driving across the country
You mentioned as part of premium, you get unlimited data. Do you know how much data is offered with Standard? Google isn't helping as I keep getting American results.
No data is offered with standard (although maps will still work obviously)
@@RyanCowan hah, not obvious at all, I didn't know that. Thanks!
Such a good video 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Sounds like AppleMusic is coming
So excited about this !
ryan i have aquostion about tesla premium connectivity can you use like a esim from phone sevic center
if u can is it wouth it
Yes
if Tesla is reading.. yes it is worth it... at 2.99/month not 9.99!
Do you need premium connectivity to remotely control the a/c(when the car is not connected to wifi obviously)?
No 👍
Hi Ryan, has your model got Boombox? I was looking for the Pedestrian Warning system. I just received my model 3 2022.
No Boombox and cannot find anything regarding plugging in a USB drive on the computer.I have plugged n a USB.Thanks.
I believe Tesla was forced to remove the boom box recently. R u based in Australia?
@@RyanCowan New Zealand, Cobber.
@@farmerfarmerer3847 Yeah well we don't have the boombox feature here in Aus, and now not sure if it will ever come now given the legal issues they had in the states.
@@RyanCowan we don't get it because in Australia there is no laws for Pedestrian Awareness sounds. It was only a fun feature because the NHTSA required that Electric Cars must make a noise so pedestrians are aware of your vehicle. So Tesla turned it into a big loud speaker.
It’s annoying when they lie in the video for their connectivity.
Will pay someone $600 to use my referral code on top of the $250 you currently get. Need this Model 3 acceleration software update !
I gladly pay $9.99/mo just for traffic and satellite view…!
Is it only when charging that you can watch Netflix etc? Not when parked? If so do you know the reason for that? Thanks!
Hey Leanne, sorry I should've made this clearer. Yes, you can watch content when parked 👍
@@RyanCowan awesome! Thanks for your reply 😊
Is there any info on what network and whether the car uses 4G or 5G here in Australia?
Great question ! My guess is 4G but not sure
Nice Vid! First Comment!
Thanks !
yeah is cool but... if you seat all day long driving and evben while charging.... is no good for your mental... get your ass out and do some jogging while waiting fully charged!
The price of 2 coffees a month
.. and I don't even drink coffee 😂 But at some point we have to weigh up which subs are worth it for us, otherwise we'd signed up to everything
@@RyanCowan yea to many subs out there but it’s worth it in the Tesla much better.
hey bro, can you pay for a yearly subscription?
Apparently this option is just rolling out now, but not sure if its coming to Australia.
If you want to get free Premium connectivity again all you need to do Ryan is buy another Model 3 ;)
... or a Model Y 😏
@@RyanCowan When is the Tesla Model Y coming in Australia? Carsales said later in 2022, but it's just never coming.
@@shekharpatel3692 I was very confident we'd be able to order it by now .. I'm still hopeful it will be first half of this year but who knows 🤷♂️
Tesla is getting android auto first.
you should really learn how to level music vs voice on your videos...
Getting better at it now. This was an older video. But if you have any advice, would love to hear it 🙏
Honestly for $9.99 a month it’s a no brainer….
Not worth it for us, but when they add more features it will be.
Totally worth it for Live View Cam 🫵
Just finish watching this and realise I shouldn't have ordered a tesla yet .... Australia still has a long way from ready for EV
Thanks for watching. I’m interested to know what your concerns are ? After almost a year of driving this car, I can confidently say the time is now for EV’s. They are about to take off 🚀🚀🚀
@@RyanCowan the charging situation want ideal really. If you have time fine you could drive around but if you need to be at somewhere at a scheduled time I think this trip would be very fustrating.
@@luckdingwong2196 yeah I guess I'm just saying from experience of owning one, this has not been an issue for us. Every time we leave the house with 100% battery. We only need to stop for charge on long road trips. And we have heaps of fast chargers here in Vic.
Wrong - at least in USA! After inputting my pswds once 18 months ago, my Model '20 Y logs-into Netflix, YT, Google, etc., automatically. So, I guess it's not the case DU? IF $99/year unlimited internet access subscription is too steep4U, then I'm sure FSD is out of the question - which makes me wonder why you bought a Tesla - ya know, the amazing car that improves as it ages!? Call me suspicious, but a 'not worth it' call by a YT content provider seems like click-bait. If so, well played, but I won't be subscribing.
Geoff, thanks for the comment.. but I dont understand why you're upset .. I explain in the video why we don't personally see enough value in the subscription with its current set of features. I do not intent to create click bait - only to help educate people and share my experience.
premium is worth it 100% , you'd be stupid not to have it.
What feature do u value the most? Doesn’t personally seem worth it for us, but everyone is going to be different
@@RyanCowan yes true, but I have to have that connectivity, otherwise screen to me is plain and blant, to me it's outdated to use Bluetooth for music and not be able to stream and have satellite view maps. The big nice screen becomes almost pointless without it, but that's just me.
Why do you need a premium connectivity on a car
We need car play!
I used to think that, but now I see why Tesla's approach is so much better.
