- The year was 1970, and all eyes would be focused on Osaka Japan, World Expo was a temporary futuristic city, where the world came together to showcase achievements and cutting edge technologies.
Expo 70 was held over 183 days in 1970 where monorails and a strange artwork called Tower of the Sun was exhibited which features in 20th Century Boy movies. Tower of the Sun still survives till this day.

fantastic as always. was lucky enough to live in Nagoya in 2004 and in shanghai during 2010.
visited both, very different expos.
Everytime i pass through North Osaka i reminisce this expo i wasn't around to visit.

Wow, both must of been an amazing experience. Apparently Shanghai holds the record for attendance at 73 million visitors.
Nagoya one was sleek. Shanghai less.
Crowds in China are notoriously messy. those 73M felt like 200 ....

I was there as a young boy (14), and would love to go back again one day. I was there with our local pipeband ( The Highland Laddie Pipeband, from Powell River, BC), and we played at many of the pavilions. BC, Canada, the Amphitheatre, and of course, in Festival Plaza, under the watchful eye of the Tower of the Sun.
Thanks for sharing your memory Brian. I'm sure it must of been an experience of a lifetime. Maybe you can make it back for Osaka Expo 2025. How would you describe the weather there compared to BC weather, much hotter?
Gamera Vs. Jiger brought me here although my parents went to Expo 86 in Vancouver and they said it was one of the greatest experiences of they're life.
Awesome. I been to Vancouver 20 years ago it was great. Went to the Roxy on Granville Street.

My father was the guy filmed in this in the video of the underneath the geyser room in the new Zealand Pavillion. Expo opened on my 7th birthday it was our families disneyland growing up.
That's amazing, thanks for sharing this info. It's great that moment under the geyser was captured forever in time showing the operational aspect of the mega event. I'm sure it was an amazing experience for you both.
@@JapaneseHistory It was . My father has passed now he talked about expo for years it was his lifes adventure. I went there in 2012 it has left a legacy not just with our family but the world.
My Dad worked at Expo ‘70 for 1 month as part of the British exhibition. At home we still have an empty souvenir Suntory whisky bottle that he brought back.
Nice, Andy Laird. I'm sure your Dad had a blast at Expo 70 and enjoyed that fine Suntory whisky. You should refill it, no one would know lol.
Would love to have seen this. I live in Dubai and went to the 2020 Expo here and it was very sad compared to Osaka's. Most pavilions were just bland boxes with video screens showing scenes from whatever country was hosting. Osaka's expo seemed to have been about the exciting future ahead.

That would have been cool. We're there many pavilions left? What about the famous tower of the sun or the geometrical expo tower. I think they dismantled it after the year 2000.
@@JapaneseHistory The tower of the sun is still standing as you probably know but not the expo tower. There is a lot of masonry work and stone foundations left over, as well as a stonehenge-looking circle of rocks. It's like walking through the ruins of an ancient city. There is also a museum in one of the original buildings with a bunch of artifacts from then. Honestly one of the most fascinating places to visit in Japan, would definitely recommend it if you're in Osaka.
Amazing thanks for sharing. It's amazing they couldn't find another purpose for the site like an exhibition centres or something like that or an amusement park. The buildings and architecture looked amazing and so bizzar even by today's standards. I guess it was all built quickly and not to last. Anyway thanks for sharing.

Yeah it looks crazy to me also. All the different architecture in the one place makes it look very random indeed. And all the people and lines remi ds me of an amusement park. I want to go.
I went to Expo 70 as a sailor aboard the Royal Australian Navy destroyer HMAS Duchess. I have a bunch of photos that I have scanned into my HDD. I would like to send them to the Expo museum if anybody could tell me how. I have very fond memories of the Expo and of Japan in general. Being an Aussie, I also went to Expo 88 in Brisbane.

I'm sure, G would have had an amazing time there. It was a demonstration of the future, some of the technology and concepts were 50 years before there time, like video conferencing and conveyor belt sushi.
In 2025.... Osaka will be host the World Expo..... Again

I went to world expo 88 in Australia was fantastic the Japan pavilion showcased high definition TV for the first time
Was the last expo to have the USSR as a Pavilion before the fall of the iron curtain and the prototype internet and touch screen tech was on display but was only tiny compared to how massive world expo 70 in Osaka was
What a blast from the past, missshellybeach. I remember world expo 88 advertisements on TV. I wanted to go so bad but never made it. I did make to Canberra to see the new parliament house building though. It's really amazing to think that 32 years ago the technologies being showcased have only now really made it into the main stream.
I remember a teacher at school telling us about the "information superhighway" built on glass. It sounded fascinating, but I didn't really know what he was talking about, and here we are.

Yes that would have been a good idea. I know most of the buildings have been demolished. The tower went down in the year 2000. Now the site is mostly green parkland.

My parents went there.
They must of had an awesome time seeing all the exhibits of the future and the crowds must of been mind blowing.
I was there like two years ago, the place seems very Eire and something not quite right, hard to explain, got bad vibes from it.
Don't blame you it's a shadow of it's former self. Considering 100 million people went through there it must have felt like a ghost town. But I know people have fond memories of the place.
