      It’s sad that kids go to such places to drink and vandalise. But it was adults who tore this place down and turned it into a ruin.
      Kids have a lot more to do than when I was a kid but somehow they don’t know how to just go out and play! Society, technology and social media, I believe, has somehow ruined childhood, they grow up faster perhaps with the extra knowledge and not for the better…
      However, there is something magical about exploring abandoned places, you get to let your imagination run wild with want went before

      As kids in the 1970s we were taken to visit a large ruined mansion somewhere in the outskirts of Newcastle Upon Tyne - a good drive from the city centre but not out in the countryside. It was by a main road and not fenced off or anything. It was just left to fall apart. It would have been Gerorgian or Victorian I guess. It was clearly very dangerous but that didn't stop loads of people just wandering around like it was a museum or something. It seemed to be quite a local attraction. My guess is it would have been demolished long ago. I wish I knew more about it. Anyone who had seen it back then would know what I was talking about.

    • @martinsodyssey
      @martinsodyssey  8 месяцев назад +2

      @@kvdp9543 you never know it might still be there, with new kids exploring, if it is, nature will really have taken over but now. it’s actually crazy how many mansions lie in ruin. Operating costs are one thing but the owners almost always take the roof off to avoid paying tax to the government and that’s when nature really takes over and they get battered by the elements. You enter thinking, I’d do this up, but even if you had the money, which most of us don’t, it still would be an absolute headache to renovate! They are a mystery though, you can’t help but be amazed and wonder what happened within the walls…

      @@martinsodyssey: As you stated I too let my imagination run wild,..how majestic the interiors were, the people that passed through the threshold in their finest clothing , the dinner parties and so forth. It is disheartening to see these historic, (my opinion), stately manors, castles, houses and cottages fall into disrepair. 😢

    • @martinsodyssey
      @martinsodyssey  8 месяцев назад +1

      It’s a double edged sword, it’s sad to see them running to ruin, but if you think about it logically the only reason most of these places exist is because disparity of wealth, which usually stems from unelected power (kings, queens and noblemen) robbing off the poor. And if they were to be renovated it would probably come out of tax payer money, instead of going to schools and hospitals. Hotels are the obvious investment opportunity but it’s probably more economical to build new from a financial stand point. There are plenty well preserved stately homes, castles and palaces, I guess, but I do get a unique feeling from walking around a ruin, something special about using your imagination…

      Good question. Your first 2 words are my short answer! Beyond that there is no one answer. I saw a picture of “The Pineapple” house on Instagram, check out my video if you’ve not seen it, and I thought that’s weird and curiosity made me want to see it, I took the dog and the family and I literally stumbled across this huge abandoned mansion in the grounds! Because I had my young daughter I never got to explore it but I did read up on it and look at archived photos; when I decided to start YouTubing I knew I had to return and explore. If you take the Blackness Castle video, I cycled that way many times and always looked in from outside the gates and I always wanted to go in, The abandoned Artland video I was reading about the artist who created one of my favourite places, Jupiter Artland and I realised he’d done other work in Scotland including an abandoned one, and of course the internet is full of useful/useless information! I have a list that is too long of places I want to see. Some off the beaten track, some well known to locals, some known to the world!

      I don’t think it had any more history to tell, it was a family home, a school and then a ruin. I don’t think it had great or tragic stories known to the public, it all happened within closed walls and doors. But I have to disagree, I think it’s full of personality. Sometimes you just have to use your imagination.

    We want to stop by on our way to Doune Castle, but we are very short on time. Google maps seems to think we can drive to the Dunmore House (not just the Pineapple building), but everything else says we have to hike half an hour to the house and half an hour back. I don't know if we have time for this. Are there any shorter entry routes?

    • @martinsodyssey
      @martinsodyssey  3 месяца назад

      I’ve only parked at the public car park by the pineapple, I think the other route is to a residential home (I think)so I’m personally not comfortable imposing. It’s got to be less than a mile from pineapple to Dunmore House and that route passes the back of the pineapple and the stables which are not to be missed too. Brisk walk is probably only 10/15mins if you are quick. However you could easily want to spend hours here if you venture throughout the whole grounds, there is a tower also that I haven’t found yet! I wouldn’t rush it if you don’t have to but appreciate you have other places to be!Good luck, hope you find the best route for you and enjoy yourself!

      It’s not clear, it changed hands from a family home to a school, my guess would be cost of ownership and maintenance became too much. It’s massive! But the school only lasted 2 or 3 years so there it lies ruined and wasted. There’s been a few stories of hotels taking it on over the years but it’s never materialised. It was also used as a set for Outlander, a TV series!
