Thing is Renji would've became captain if he wanted to during the time skip, but he doesn't want to become a captain because he wants to remain loyal to Byakuya staying beside him.
Its crazy dogs from the Rukon district became so powerful when it was said only those of blood can obtain Bankai. Kenpachi was a nobody too. So on board with though ❤
It will always trip me out how Kubo always loved to drip out Renji yet at the same time would troll him to the point his own sword didn't respect him and Ichibei had to be the one who told him Zabimaru's true name. Once he lost his powers Rukia was all Renji’s. I guess it was the best thing for Orihime as well since all of that bonding time got her out of the friend zone. It’s kind of funny that Rukia named her daughter the female version of Ichigo’s name though.

I think the only way Renji becomes a captain is if Byakuya dies and the Kuchiki family isn't inherently tied to Squad 6. His ultimate goal is tied directly to Byakuya, so I think if Kubo had him become the captain of another squad, it'd be a betrayal of his character.
Why didn't they give this kind of training in zero division to Ikkaku Madarame cause his bankai was not a true one unfortunately a man can dream only 😮💨
