Saw today’s performance. Went in with pretty low expectations based on videos and reviews. Wow, Lea can SING. It was like watching someone’s lifelong dream come true in real time. Really special to see something like that live.
Was not a Lea Michele nor Glee fan but I did walk into the theater thinking it would be good. At worst, I thought well Ramin is here so whatever shortcomings the show might have it would still be good to watch him perform again. But omg, Lea really made this role her own. She was breathtaking. I too was bothered by the relentless cheering and how you had to strain to hear the final notes because of the enthusiasm of the audience but I also have to admit it made for an exceptional night at the theater. It was like witnessing the stars align and as you said not something I'll ever see again in my lifetime.
Saw the show last week and Lea was magnificent. Yes, this is powerful but she also had some quieter moments that were really lovely. She has great chemistry with Ramin, too.
She was amazing, when I watched that video I wasn't expecting to get emotional but she actually broke my heart. I believe her pain and getting up again. And this is a video, out of context, I can't IMAGINE what it must be to watch the full story, seeing her live and feeding from the audience energy. Those amazing reviews make 100% sense to me after watching that performance.
This young woman can SING! Liking or not liking a voice is kind of odd in this case. Her tone, range, power is all on point with the slight nasal quality of Streisand. It's beautiful. Are people reacting to her Glee character or her actual performance here? She is a phenomenal singer. 😍
Act 1 and 2 were never ending with Beanie, then I went to see LEA (DIVAS with CAPS) and LEA was a force of nature. The show was never boring with this new leading lady, even act 2 went by fast. The music that makes me dance was thrilling and I'd rather be blue both in act 2.
I saw the show for the first time in October 2022 and was blown away by Lea's performance. So much so, that I went back 7 more times to see her again. the last time was for the final performance on September 3, 2023. At that performance she took some songs up an octave or two and held some notes ridiculously long for a human being. Before the show started, an announcement was made "At this performance, The role of Fanny Brice will be played by..." pause and the audience gave a collective gasp. 'Lea Michele" and we went wild with relief. Thunderous applause as soon as she appears on stage and screaming after every song, deservedly so. She will be in concert at Carnegie Hall on October 30 and I was lucky enough to get a ticket.
Having seen it IRL, wow did she deliver this scene (and all the other ones) because she belts it in the first act I really didn't mind and was surprised at how much she got me to feel...let's remember Spring Awakening was heavy lifting too. It's kind of an abrupt tonal shift but she really pulls it off. I was lucky enough to see it with an audience that didn't interrupt her singing with applause and I came in with super high expectations and was not disappointed. Normally I am looking at everyone in the cast but it was really hard to take my eyes off of her in every scene even though Tovah, Ramin, and Jared were all incredible too.
It would be great to capture Ramin's performance on video. He is, as always, pure magic in Funny Girl. His voice soars and he plays a fantastic Nicky! I saw him with both Beanie and Lea and he was steady and charismatic in both performances. With Beanie his numbers were my favorite and Act 2 was better for me due to his storyline. With Lea, his star dims as, impossible as I thought it could be, she far outshines him. Their duets together are good; they have the juice! The audience yesterday was beyond enthusiastic and the cheering cut into most numbers but honestly how can you blame us when we are witnessing Broadway history. The videos don't do justice to Lea's performance in person.
I was there opening night and, as I watch this again, it reminds me of "Rose's Turn" in "Gypsy." It's the "11 o'clock number" and brings the heroine to an emotional climax. Both are women consumed by ambition and driven to succeed. In Rose, it opens up a well of anger and frustration. Patti Lupone turned that into an almost psychotic breakdown. In Fanny, it forces her to return to her own drive to overcome every obstacle. She won't let Nick take her down. Both heroines follow an emotional arc. They are different people by the end of their songs. Rose has purged herself of her frustrated ambitions and can accept her daughter's success. Fanny has faced her greatest fear of being unloved and come out stronger. In 20 years, Lea will make a great Rose.

I have never seen not even one episode of Glee. I had no idea who this woman is. I thought her interpretation of this piece - extraordinary. It seems that she had to do the same as when Lansbury stepped into the shoes of Merman - when Lansbury took on GYPSy in 1973. Of course, Lansbury won us over. A new different interpretation of an iconic role. I hope she breaks through the barrier of peoples made up minds. So glad to see classic Broadway back on Broadway.
You can hate me, or you can love me, but I have loved lea Michele from the begining and I always will and she is funny girl, she’s the perfect funny girl.
Audiences getting excited over a particular artist and song is nothing new. For example, Jennifer Holiday singing "And I'm Telling You..." had audiences roaring and cheering throughout the song during Dreamgirls all the time because the audience is very emotionally invested at that moment. And the same can be said for those who love and cheer Michele. I will say that having seen it with Beanie over the summer, the audience I saw it with was not as excitable as those watching Lea.
I hadn't seen Lea perform in quite a while, and like Marc, I was surprised at the acting. I agree with Marc on the "I beat my own drum" part, she's supposed to be mentally dragging herself up to defy the heartbreak, then it's at the last phrase that the facade should break. The audience energy comes through the screen. Barry Manilow spoke about how much Bette Miller needs an audience, that it completely changes how she performs, and her first album would have been a failure had they not rerecorded it with an audience in studio. Lea does better in the same way. This finale is difficult but despite a couple of wobbles in the early part the last part absolutely brings you to your feet. Triumph over adversity. You go girl.

Some people in these comments sections really scare me because not only do they get upset when audiences the wild even though let’s be real without that reaction the theater would be dead. It also irritates me that people are acting like oh funny girl should be stuck in a museum and never be done again because it will never be done again with Barbara so people like that are basically saying they don’t want the theater to live on they want it to die and that’s just sad.
First, just want to say I'm a big fan of your channel after watching your Hamilton shows. 🙂 I was never a big Glee fan but started watching snippets of the show here via RUclips thanks to Naya Rivera and Amber Riley mainly. So I know Funny Girl mainly from Naya's scene-stealing pop version of Don't Rain on My Parade (RIP) from the show. Sorry to Barbara Streisand die-hard fans, I'm a ballet person not a broadway person, but I digress. So the heartbreak/optimism in this song reminds me of Naya ( as well as Cory) and so much potential cut short. I'm glad that Lea and Naya reconciled before Naya passed.
It's truly awful that, in an industry whose lifeblood depends on audience support, there are "aficionados" who take offense at overreactive fans. And folks people wonder why the industry is struggling.
Oh, thank God I thought I was the only one who is sick to death of the purists getting upset when audiences go bananas like you said that’s what keeps the theater alive. That’s what helps performers knows that they’re doing a good job. I don’t see a problem with it.
@@Leamichellefan2244 it’s also funny to me that people haven’t seen a reception like that in so long that they’ve forgotten that it happens. People do know that throwing tomatoes at performers people didn’t like started in opera right? Audiences have always been involved. Not everyone deserves a standing ovation after every show like they get these days. Exceptional talent gets exceptional applause.
The one thing you nailed is the Energy thing. i saw this show with Bennie and Lea. The energy with Lea Was AMAZING you could feel it surround you the Whoop was justified. i left the Bennie production wanting MORE. i got everything i wanted with Lea. i felt bad for Bennie but shes Amazing n her own right just not in this roll
After Barbra there’s only her … only Lea for that Funny Girl … u don’t like her ok … but she’s the best for it as simple as that we have to face that simple fact !
She is phenomenal! This guy's critique gets on my nerves. Please, he is nitpicking. She does this scene with amazing talent, emotion, and gut-wrenching pain. Let's applaud the talent.
I agree when you said you doubted Lea's acting. Generally I felt like she was always aware of where the camera and where the audience was. She's one hell of a performer, performing for the camera and audience but that's different than acting and getting lost in the character. Lea in the past always seemed like she was trying to look pretty in every scene. In the opening of this number, I feel like she finally was able to lose her self in the character and not caring who's watching.
I think most of these critiques are the directors fault. Some of the decisions are probably hers but a lot of these could be fixed with a better director
Yes please react to Ramin! Michele Costa on RUclips (which I think is whos video you’re reacting to right now) has a whole playlist with Ramin singing Who Are You Now and You Are Woman, I Am Man. You should do reactions to all of them ruclips.net/p/PLPsRPReRpYJK72SfM0PKV1Cbyluj8R0eJ
I have followed Lea since the day of Glee She is fantastic, and I mean fantastic…… I love her better than BS, Barbara Streisand! Thank you, Lea…. I love you girl
It's hard to compare any actor to the OG of any role in theatre. They are trail blazers and give everyone after a platform to push off of. It's hard not to compare, but you also gotta look at what the newer actors bring to the table. Taking on a role after Streisand takes balls, and that either counts for stupidity or guts. Which one it is is your opinion.
I’m 70 years old. For me, this production does not hold a candle to the original production which my late husband performed in. Nor did the 1968 production of FG I performed in at 15. I was only in the chorus of this college production of “Funny Girl” in Los Angeles but our Fanny was played by a brilliant actress/singer who’s name escapes me, but she was a polished pro who came into our production and really made it shine, but again, regarding FG on Broadway today? No. This production is just painful for me to watch! There is ONLY one Barbra Streisand!! Her voice & performance is seared into my mind & heart too deeply. However, Lea’s greatest contribution is admirably displaying to the younger set a “different type” of music & entertainment many young people today know little about, which in turn should inspire many to learn more about Broadway musicals and the great composers and artists who labor to create them! It’s a beautiful, inspiring, thrilling medium. If Lea succeeds in doing that, then this production will have served a magnificent purpose indeed.
@@bigbandsrock1 oh I agree! Streisand is a powerhouse that no one should try to copy. And I'm glad she didn't try to do that because that's just suicide hahaha. What a Funny Girl legacy your family has! No wonder this show is so near and dear to your heart!
Like I said and I’ll say it again. I hope they remake Funny Girl. If they do, they better cast Lea Michele as Fanny Brice, because she really was born to play the role. She really is the greatest star 🌟. Cory Monteith would have been very proud 🥹, and so would Naya Rivera (May they R.I.P. 😇🕊🙏🏽❤️)
Hi, Mark -- I caught Beanie's performance on Broadway and appreciate this comparison video. Just from the bootleg snippets I've seen so far, Beanie was much funnier than Ms. Michele who is a superior vocalist to Ms. Feldstein. So, both ladies' performances leave me unsatisfied. My major critique has to do with you presenting your analysis by placing yourself in full screen with your subject as an insert. I think you should reverse this -- and place yourself as the insert so we can get a better look at what you're critiquing. As is, Ms. Michele's performance occupies such a tiny portion of the screen, it's very hard for us to form our own opinion. I truly enjoy your work and appreciate the thought that goes into your segments.
And you're right about comparisons between Lea and Barbra being a waste of time. Like comparing Richard Harris's Dumbledore to Michael Gambon's. Two different performances of the same character, just take them both and be glad you were give two views of role to enjoy.
I'll wager that Michele is way past the (endlessly disruptive) response of her fans. By now, navigating their outbursts must be something of a trial, as it is for those in the audience who don't want the proceedings to be constantly interrupted by a theater-ignorant following. I was there; the audience hijacks the show.
This song is from the movie not the original stage show. It was written for the movie so there would be an original song that would be eligible for a Oscar , and it was nominated but lost.
Well duh. Most actresses know that and would never dream of claiming to do it as well as Streisand. She’s the unattainable goal but Lea Michele sure does give it her best shot.
@@KatSut1978 I was pleasantly surprised with the maturity and depth that Lea brought to the role... her singing has never been my personal cup of tea but she does a very good job! I simply wish SOMEONE would mention and address those annoying glottal attacks. I find they distract from her vocals ... but that is my opinion LOL Hard to Believe Barbra was in her early 20s when she starred on Broadway !
I think that he underplays the importance of the audience's reaction. That is the beauty of live theater. Of course, when it is obvious that many members of this audience are there only for the star. It happens here, but it has always happens. We can see it work when the artist steps up to the challenge. It can flop when the draw is horrible. Oddly enough many of these draws are not as awful as one would have expected. One example was David Hasselholf in "Jekyll and Hyde." He gave a competent performance (which actually surprised me). Another was Susan Lucci, who was okay in "Annie Get Your Gun." But, they both got people into a theater for the first time.
I don't pay attention to who is cancelled or other drama. All I know is that Beanie was wrong , Lea was born for it. It won't be great once she's done her couple years.
This was on Broadway??? I don't understand her in this role. Who is better Lea or Streisand??? Sorry not even CLOSE to Barbara--no comparison in any way!!
Are you seriously saying reacting to a live audience on Broadway is a demand for just someone like Lea Michele? They all have to do this. Also, it's never a problem for 300-400 people. To be considered "Broadway," the seats have to be 500+. Educate yourself if you're going to educate the rest of the world on it.
Ok. I love her commitment and dramatic performance in this scene, but there is a lot of out of tune moments. I have heard it in other FG bootlegs and no one mentions it.
@@tomtomlinson4826 exactly thank you when some thing calls for a motion like a song, you can’t expect perfect pitch and honestly when you’re pretending to cry, you do go off pitch and if you ask me that makes it far more effective.
@@tomtomlinson4826 My comment is with regards to all the bootlegs I have seen. It has been a consistent issue regardless of the emotion being conveyed. And you can be emotional on pitch.
Uh, I don’t know. Maybe this was a bad night. But, personally for me, this came off as a high school production. She had a lot of intonation problems. But I will admit I will never accept anyone other than Streisand. It’s all about the voice.
We all know she is talented, and she can act, and she has a big stunning voice. No surprises there. But I feel like society needs to evolve past rewarding people who have toxic personalities, just cause they're talented. There are lots of talented people in the world who aren't assholes.
This is the kind of thinking that gave us the whole Beanie fiasco. This isn't preschool, it's Broadway. There isn't a category in the Tony's for "Nicest person".
@@jenm9099 what gave us the “Beanie fiasco” was the fact that they wanted someone famous. They cared more about putting someone with a big name on the marquee then they did about casting the person best for the role. There are so many talented people in the world who aren’t racist toxic people. Cast an unknown. Funny Girl was Barbra Streisand’s second Broadway role, and her first movie ever. It made her a star. Why couldn’t it do that for another unknown performer?
@@Jah_LEASE_yah I'm sure they could have cast an unknown. I agree that the producers were looking for a "big name" to star in the revival. What I don't understand is why they thought Beanie was that big name. I had literally never heard of her before. The fiasco ensued because Beanie couldn't sing the role She was so unqualified that people were upset she had been cast in the first place.
@@jenm9099 By the time she was cast she was already a golden globe nominee. She had a big enough name that they cast her even though she didn’t have the vocals for the role.
@@Jah_LEASE_yah For me that was worse. I went from having no clue who she was straight to cringing at her voice. There really is no excuse for that. Either way, it was a mess.
They're both amazing. However Barbra Streisand, is Barbra Streisand. I've never understood why one performer would want to remake the work of a perfect performer that preceded them. I always thought, why not take a show, or song, that wasn't as good as it could have been, and remake that. Make that near miss amazing. When you redo perfection, you're always going to fall short of the original, no matter how good you are.
I felt like she did the more intense part in a truly great way, very powerful and moving. The softer, crying parts however... I just didn't feel it at all, even snickered a little because it felt fake.
She can belt out a song. I don't think that she can caress the notes, her voice is one dimensional. I think Sutton Foster would have been a better choice. Granted she has the range but I don't like her voice.

I saw it in 1965. Would have loved to his one . She's so Good
First, just want to say I'm a big fan of your channel after watching your Hamilton shows. 🙂
I was never a big Glee fan but started watching snippets of the show here via RUclips thanks to Naya Rivera and Amber Riley mainly.
@@chachabunny123ut thank you exactly, well said.
Lea Michele was on Broadway well before any film productions.
Loved this performance and your comments about it.
In the opening of this number, I feel like she finally was able to lose her self in the character and not caring who's watching.
this. yes.
I think most of these critiques are the directors fault. Some of the decisions are probably hers but a lot of these could be fixed with a better director
The breakdown was my fav
Ramin in I am Man and You are Women is INCREDIBLE.
I have followed Lea since the day of Glee She is fantastic, and I mean fantastic……
I love her better than BS, Barbara Streisand! Thank you, Lea…. I love you girl
'A live moment that'll NEVER be quite the same again!'
Thank GOD!!! 🙀😵💫🙄🥶🤣🔥😈🔥😩💣💣💣💣💣💣💣!!!
I like that song very much.:-)😀🙂:-(The words of this song are very beautiful and emotional.
the music that makes me dance reaction next? :P
Fantastic commentary.
There is video of Ramin and Ramin and Lea. I have been his fan for 12 years. He IS a treasure.
This song is from the movie not the original stage show. It was written for the movie so there would be an original song that would be eligible for a Oscar , and it was nominated but lost.
No one can sing it better than Streisand.
As Streisand techinique was top notch. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
I always wonder why "My Man" wasn't put at the end
It was only for the movie. I would’ve LOVED to see Lea sing My Man live. Whoo would’ve been chilling.
This was on Broadway??? I don't understand her in this role. Who is better Lea or Streisand??? Sorry not even CLOSE to Barbara--no comparison in any way!!
Sondheim didn't write this. Actually when he heard they were thinking of casting someone non-Jewish in the role, he declined the project
❤❤❤
Your video reminds me of the guy who used to post him watching videos… you should be smaller than the video of Lea. It’s so distracting. Imho
I’d love to hear you comment on anything by Cuan Durkin, maybe “Perfect” 😊
PLEEAASSSEE DO REACT TO MORISSETTE AMON BRUNO MARS EVOLUTION MEDLEY(WITH 3RD AVENUE)🙏🙏😍❤💕❤🔥🔥🔥🔥
Dude, The Sondheim song is called "Losing My Mind," NOT "I'm Losing My Mind." And it's one helluva song.
Probably my favorite of his. Altho it is hard to choose just one!
I always find it fascinating when a great talent appears to be obsessed with a former icon or show.
Why is the video of Lea small and the whole screen taken up with the creators facial expressions? Off putting.
That was short. I thought she would do that for a lot longer. that was only a couple of weeks.
No can ever compare to Barbra Streisand. Not even Lea Michelle.
People could whoop a bit softer quieter.maybe.
Ok. I love her commitment and dramatic performance in this scene, but there is a lot of out of tune moments. I have heard it in other FG bootlegs and no one mentions it.
Sometimes eprfect pitch gives way to emotion. This song called for emotion.
@@NicoleHeaston Hmm. That seems oxymoronic ... losing emotional control yet, amazingly, staying perfectly on pitch. Not sure how that would be done.
@@trb7153 lol
No.
Final?? Didn't she just get on lol smh
the last number in a musical is called the "finale"👍
pls react to Morissette's BRUNO MARS Medley cover😊 Thanks!
not a fan of LM, sorry, but wish her well
Uh, I don’t know. Maybe this was a bad night. But, personally for me, this came off as a high school production. She had a lot of intonation problems. But I will admit I will never accept anyone other than Streisand. It’s all about the voice.
I am not a fan. I agree that this is forced. She usually looks surprised that she hit a note and she does it a lot here.
She’s still a racist.
The fiasco ensued because Beanie couldn't sing the role
She was so unqualified that people were upset she had been cast in the first place.
I don't like this song. Honestly. That is regardless who sung it.
Let's face it, it’s a musical about Barbra Streisand not Funny Brice.
I felt like she did the more intense part in a truly great way, very powerful and moving. The softer, crying parts however... I just didn't feel it at all, even snickered a little because it felt fake.
Ordinary and forced.
You talking about yourself?
She’s evil
She can belt out a song. I don't think that she can caress the notes, her voice is one dimensional. I think Sutton Foster would have been a better choice. Granted she has the range but I don't like her voice.
Sutton lol great but not this at all
Wonder if she is bullying any cast members? She is known for this!
She's not, the cast loves her. But YOU are bullying a celebrity online. Pot, meet kettle!
@@broadwaygeek8975 Don't even waste your breath trying to find logic with some people. They are just lonely and want anyone to give them even a little attention.
She doesn't bully the cast! Just the black ones.
@@broadwaygeek8975 that was beautifully said I mean they keep bringing up what she did 10 X years ago but yet they keep bullying her now in the present and they don’t see the fact that they are hypocrites. I definitely agree with you pot say hello to kettle because that’s exactly what’s going on here.
@@valeriewimberly4568 you nailed it you definitely nailed it out and look at the comment right after yours because it just proved your point about them being lonely and wanting attention.
Well, I don’t know her, and I have never seen Funny Girl as a play……but I adored the movie and I must say, she is no Barbra Striesand. I’m not familiar enough w/ Lea Michelle. I don’t even want to know who play Nick Arenstin (sp) because I loved Omar Sharif so much. But the years have rolled along and it’s probably time to see it in a new perspective. I’ll try not to criticize her.
Ehm no, she ain't Streisand. Her name is Lea Michelle, they are two completely different being from different times. Do you also judge fishes by their abilities to climb trees?
@@Evey94Marti striesand and Lea Michelle, are not totally different. They are BOTH singers. That is where they are alike. Where they differ is in their styles. I need to get to know Lea Michelle better so I can appreciate her style more. I’m sure she is a lovely singer.
If a fish could climb a tree, I might judges it’s abilities against a bears abilities. But silly, a th ish can’t climb a tree. Silly!!
@@Evey94Marti my thoughts exactly thank you I’m so sick of oh she’s not Barbara. She’s not Barbara. No she’s Lea Michele and she’s amazing.
Ramin Karimloo plays Nicky - Phantom of the Opera, Jean ValJean Les Mis among others. He can actually sing! Good grief. Lea is brilliant, better that Barbra IMO and I'm a fan of Barbra's since she began.
All i see is an over fluffed Glee actor
Breaking down crying is realistic. Have you tried singing while you're heartbroken and crying? smh
Please react to Morissette and Alan Menken “a whole new world” with will smith as an audience. You might see Morisette in a new movie musical……. Soon
