We live in a beautiful, small affluent tourist destination area in CA. My kids go on lockdown about once a year. In a town of 28k people. It’s not just a big city problem, it’s an America problem.

@@ileanaradkowski8720 not sure if you ever got your answer, but it sounds like there was threat of an active shooter at a nearby school. The way she said it sounds like there was no actual violence that transpired, but that someone had threatened it. So the schools go into “lockdown” where the entire school is locked, no one can enter or exit, all classroom doors are locked, all windows are covered, lights off and kids in a designated hiding area within the classroom and must stay silent in order to stay safe.
When I was a kid there was lockdown where everything is just locked but class continues and then lock out where the hiding and lights off part happens. We thankfully never had an actual active incident but there were drills
I don't think there's a place in USA you can move to, that wouldn't have this issue. Probably overseas with less gun violence. But I understand that's far fetched to be that far from family or moving countries.
Canada does not have this issue
It's not as far fetched as people think. We moved from Seattle to the Netherlands quite easily.

And that’s why I’m grateful to be living in Canada. I’m so sorry that this is a worry people from different countries have. I have a friend that quit his 9-5 job and is homeschooling his kids because he refuses to send them to school. Best wishes with everything moving forward❤

I live in PEI which is arguably the safest Canadian province and for the last 7-8 years we have had at least 1 school lockdown a year related to violence or threat of violence. With a population of about 150k, that's a lot. The world is getting scarier in all areas every day. 😔
I'm in ontario and I feel relief as well but a part of me still fears of the mental health of others and what they are capable of. :(
I'm so so sorry. I've had this happen too and it's absolutely horrifying beyond words. My step-son is in high school and I was on my way to pick him up when so many cops started flying by me on the way to the school. I got such a weight in my stomach, I felt like I couldn't breathe. When I got to the school, there were officers outside asking those who stopped if they had kids in the school and of course I said yes, he directed me and other parents to pull into the grass and said we could walk up to the gates. I joined the other parents who were all crying and screaming and it was just about the worst moment of my life. I've been so scared of having him be in public school for his whole life and it felt like it was realized. My partner's phone had just broken a couple days before too! So I had to call a friend to call his boss to get to talk to him. I called my step-son and he texted because he couldn't pick up but he said he was okay and I just told him I love him so much. And I had to wait there for so long with all the other parents and the cops. It was awful. Complete and utter nightmare. I can totally empathize with you and understand how hard it must have been. Sending you so much love ❤🫂 I hope you're able to enjoy your vacation and get a bit of rest and reset out of town. Thinking of you guys ❤

As a Canadian mom, the amount of American school violence scares me. I don’t know what the solution is because you shouldn’t be far from family if they’re your support system for you and your child. You should feel safe to send your kid to learn. If your gut tells you to move, that may the best decision. Listen to your momtuition because you always have her best interests at heart.

As I live halfway across the globe, the idea of freely owning and carrying a gun is very unreal. I can't imagine how my life would be if it were legal in the country to buy and carry without any special reason or training. That's so scary. 😢
Most crimes like this are committed by people who obtain guns ILLEGALLY. That can happen in any country, strict gun laws or not.
@@mileyharris7258 The fact is that in many countries, there are no shops to purchase guns. Even in England, police are not allowed to carry guns. When there is no place to buy them, it reduces a significant percentage of crimes.When it is not legal, there is strict control over the matter, and law enforcement makes arrests.
That’s just not true. It doesn’t happen in places where there is gun control, at least at 1/10,000th the scale.
Having a lolly pop to help with taking off and landing on the plane really helps. It helps their ears pop. Plus it helps distract for a while. Hope you have so much fun in Hawaii ❤

the shooting in Uvalde happened while i was living in a different part of Texas and six months pregnant. i cried for days. it’s so scary and infuriating to feel like you cant send your children anywhere and trust that they’ll be safe. my daughter is 19mo now, i’m a sahm, and my husband and i have gone back and forth on what we’ll do when she’s old enough for school. i still don’t know what we’ll do. my bonus daughter is 7 and in public school in a small town, but i’m still scared for her constantly. i don’t know what the right choice is, or if your daughter will be much safer anywhere you go in the US. i guess i don’t know the point of this comment. i guess just to commiserate with you and any other scared, hurting moms.
Unfortunately this is a problem everywhere in the US. I moved from Philadelphia to a tiny city in PA called Williamsport - and we recently had some unprecedented gun violence that impacted high school aged kids….. I don’t think moving will make a difference.
It’s so sad that as parents we are scared to drop off our children at daycare or at school due to the violence that has taken place in the past years. I have a 2.5 year old and I’m terrified for the time when she has to go to school. Not only is there potential violence but sometimes even staff and teachers turn out to be monsters. We can’t control everything but what I can do is try to live in a city where crime isn’t as high and definitely will be homeschooling my child. ❤

I live in Australia and never have to worry about getting a call like that. You need to leave the country and live somewhere with different laws in order to decrease the high risk to your child. And sorry to say, but it’s not a word wide issue, the high level of risk to your children is a USA issue.
I’m an American mom living in France and I won’t move back for this reason. I grew up in a small town in FL and we had a pipe bomb in my middle school and I’m still traumatized from the bomb squad evacuation and never feeling safe in school
I’m so sorry Brittany. I have the same exact fears. I’m sure every mom these days do too. This isn’t your home. Home is where you feel peace. Doesn’t matter if you’ve lived here 12 years. You will go find another home somewhere else. I personally would NEVER live in LA, or any big city while raising my kids. I can’t homeschool because I need sanity and a life when my kids go to school or I’m not the best version of myself. I grew up in Las Vegas and had many incidents (almost kidnapped, school shooting ((gangs, not todays school shooting)), stalkers, lots of criminal activity in the area) and that left me with trauma. I’m finally acknowledging that now at 25 and I left Vegas at 11. I had nightmares growing up and slept with the covers over my ears because I was scared of burlgars. Anyways, I live the country now and it’s the best thing ever. I recommend TN to you (where I am) I’d tell you areas and stuff if you’d like to know, just not sharing that on the internet:) Those swimsuits are super cute! I think that blue actually could be your color!
It’s very scary when that happens. I live in the country and they have had lockdowns at schools out here. It can happen anywhere. I’m so sorry. It is very scary and I’m worried about my son starting school someday.
I’m so sorry Brittany, this must have been so scary for you. I would honestly encourage you to look into homeschooling a little more. I think it’s possible for most families to make it work and it’s the only option that will guarantee something like this won’t happen again. Sending you so much love.

I second that! I am self employed and not a big earner at all but I am gojng to HS my kiddos starting this year because I’ll just make it work with evenings and weekends of work! Mine is less on safety (I’m uk based) but being able to spend time with them and having control over what and how they learn (they are twins and soo diff so they will deffo have different learning styles) if you have support you’d be amazing at it. Nobody js a better teacher than the person who loves you most ♥️♥️♥️
I agree. We’re in Europe currently but homeschooling is my goal once we return to the US. I couldn’t take the risk.
Starting over as a mom is scary and difficult but I would do what feels best. I do believe you have a good head on your shoulders to make this decision and your daughter will be grateful that you care so much one day.
If no one else has said it to you before, I'll tell you this now, you'd be an amazing homeschooling mum. It's just an idea. But understandably a huge commitment. And it wouldn't be like your daughter misses out on the social aspect as there would be heaps of group activities you could do with other homeschoolers or just within your own friends circle. If that's at all an option you'd seriously consider, I'd want you to at least know you'd be great at it so that part shouldn't worry you! It's just other factors like teaching kids independence and just life stuff that comes with going to school outside of the home environment. I hope you find peace in your heart and mind so stuff like this doesn't worry you whenever she's not with you. It really is a parent's worst nightmare!! 😞❤
There’s definitely no where “safer” than the other. It’s more so choosing in person or homeschooling. We live in a tiny country town with less than 1,400 people and my sons first few weeks in kindergarten they were in a tough lockdown with someone awful outside. They caught them and everything was ok but needless to say; I thought being far from major cities would dim this but the fact is it’s a scary world and there’s crazy people everywhere. We have to make the best decisions for our own. It’s terrifying. I’m sorry you were in that position and hopefully everyone is ok going forward. Just follow your gut!
I don’t want to invalidate your personal reasons or anything but I just want to say that my nieces school was on lockdown both Friday and yesterday for the same reasons. They live in “Nowhere, MI.” I suppose it’s true that statistically there are safer places to live compared to others. But just don’t rush into leaving your friends and family and support system.
I couldnt imagine growing up with these fears let alone being a parent having to deal with them. I live in Canada and this is just something we dont go through yet see it happen so much in the US. I can definitely see you living the Canadian life and making here home. Its definitely an option if this issue becomes to unbearable.

I live in England and so I can't imagine ever experiencing anything to do with guns because they're just not a common issue here, I'm from London and we've never ever had a gun threat in our local schools. i have an upcoming kindergartener and tker - we are homeschooling! lots of charter options in CA and they give you money you can use for curricula and extracurriculars! we are very excited and i am so relieved we don't have to deal with in person school! lots of park play dates and ways to socialize - the homeschool community is HUGE!

For the plane get one of your old handbags or wallets and fill it with random stuff that she can find. Old business cards, random fidget toys, stickers, mini note book, anything that is not a kids toy that you can put in there for her to find and play with. Hide things in all the zippers and all the pockets
Homeschool. With your job it's a no-brainer. You don't have to move and your daughter will be safe. I started to homeschool after sending my first kid to public through kinder. There was a threat at his k-8 school which wasn't the only reason we pulled him but definitely a factor. Once I pulled him out I felt so much relief for so many reasons and homeschooling has been so much fun. It has brought our family closer together. I highly recommend.

We live in Australia and this is NOT something we have to worry about or deal with. Our children have lockdown drills but we've never had to discuss what would happen in the situation you have just dealt with. I'm so sorry that's your reality and it's NOT good enough.

I live in Spain and the idea that a school could go on lockdown is terrifying, its just isn't feasible. Also as a mother I can only imagine how terrifying it must be and I understand you 200% and I am so sorry you have had to go through this. I agree with other comments, it feels like a USA problem.

Brittany I’m so sorry, I have a 21 month old baby girl and I think about that stuff all the time it makes me paranoid. I actually lived a similar nightmare but mine ended in a tragedy, my one month old passed away from a rare illness at birth 3 years ago and I know a parents true nightmare first hand, it’s the worst ! It’s completely normal to be petrified of these things. We can only control so many things and you are doing your VERY best mama ❤️ I’m glad Arrow and all the children at the school are safe and nothing bad happened. Because of what I experienced I over protect my younger daughter and even though I feel guilty for always watching her like a hawk I’m trying my best little by little. So yea your panic and fear is totally validated and understood, this world is getting bat shit crazy.

Girl! Homeschooling is the best most freeing thing! Look for some mom groups meet like minded mamas and get plugged in. Honestly, it has been the nest thing for my little family.
Homeschooling might be a good option since she is so young.
She doesn't even need to be in care at her current age. It's an option. Not actual "school". She's in what my country calls daycare.

i never ever wanted to be a homeschool mom, but as my toddler gets to that age i’ve pretty much decided that’s what i’m going to do. unfortunately schools these days do not do a good job at protecting our kids. :(

I would consider homeschooling at this stage. There are so many benefits with homeschooling, safety is definitely one of them. Also, you’ll be creating a stronger bond with your little one, create more memories of you two together. You can tailor her learning the way you see fit, observing what she’s interested in and fostering and encouraging more learning in that area. If she’s struggling with a subject you can spend more time teaching her that.. (things what would be missed in a class with 10+ kids with only one teacher). The benefits are endless and she can still be socialised with other kids. There are so many homeschooling groups these days, plus you can get her involved in sports and other activities where she can play with other kids.. but at the end of the day, the main thing is: you can have complete peace of mind knowing she is safe. Of course you don’t have to do it, but it is absolutely an amazing option you could consider for you and your family ❤
Just got back from HI; was there for a week and half on two islands. It was super windy and kind of chilly at times. Be sure to pack Arrow a long sleeve or two! Have the best time!
In my opinion, I would move or homeschool. There is absolutely nothing worth your child's safety. You make some hard decisions that you may regret in the short term but the alternative is unthinkable.
So sorry you went through this. Homeschooling could help in the short term but ultimately you are living in a country where the safety of children is not high on the government's list of priorities - this has been proven time and time again. Please know that there are many countries where children are safe at school - it doesn't have to be like this.
Gurl, come to Canada. You'd love Montreal, and Toronto is expensive but fun. Vancouver is tits because of weather, mountains, sea and vibes, a bit sleepy but easy south flight to see your mum and same time zone. And we're not allowed to have hand guns or assault rifles. 🎉

One of my favourite things about living where I live, Australia, 700,000 guns were destroyed when I was kid, including my dad's, and we got a new stereo with the money the government gave us for it haha.

You see the thing is I absolutely hate that the only option is to homeschool. I don’t WANT to homeschool. I want my kids to have the academic and social opportunities that traditional schooling offers. I also want a break from being with my kids and the opportunity to focus on my career again. But the country we live in does not prioritize our children’s safety. This happens time and time again. It’s sickening. I’d look seriously into moving to Canada. I’m so so glad you’re all safe. One of my biggest fears should not be taking my young, innocent child to SCHOOL. This is America.
Honestly these things only happen in the USA. Always wondered why people have the dream to go to a country where weapons are seen as normal.

Im with you. I have been pondering the same myself. Just about 2 weeks ago my aunt called me saying that her daughter, my cousin called her from school crying saying that people were shooting in her school. I couldnt believe it. Thank god no one was hurt but that one bullet that was shot couldve hit anyone. I just moved to western Massachusetts from Sw Florida a little over a year ago mainly for family support since im a newly single mom of a 3 year old. I sold my home and now im here where i have family to help me with childcare while i work my 12 hour shifts. I work at the local hospital where just a few days ago we had 3 stabbings come in as traumas in my shift alone. Ive been doing alot of thinking lately and i know that i must leave this high crime city. I dont want to raise my beautiful baby boy here. I dont want him to fall into drugs or gangs or be a victim of a crime/violence. I want him to be safe. I dont want him exposed to all this nastiness going on. Yes, shootings, violence, and drugs are everywhere, but some places have way less risk than others. Im having the same worries you are having. I have been in a bit of a depressed space just thinking about having to stay here up until i can save enough to buy my home in a more of a rural/ farm-ish area. Until im in a place where im less dependent on family for child care...until i can hopefully do prn instead of full time and be able to spend more time with my son. I feel you 100%. I know I'll be a wreck when i finally have to bring my son to kindergarten and be forced to release control of his safety and wellbeing.
sadly it’s the reality for everyone in the US I don’t think there’s really a safe space to go. It could happen anywhere! homeschooling has really changed over years and there’s like co-op opportunities. My public library has resources for homeschooling families
I’m with you and understand you, you are an amazing momma and I KNOW you will make the best decision. My 4 year old says she hates school because she hates drills that they need to do to practice for lockdowns and that breaks my heart .

Our daughters are the same age I’ve been on this parenting rollercoaster with you. My heart goes out to you I’m sorry you had to go through that it breaks my heart I couldn’t imagine sending my children to school and not knowing that they would be safe. I’ve also moved every year since my daughter has been born we’ve had to uproot and start fresh and build that village again. It’s really hard but every time my village gets stronger and I’m so happy we’ve finally found somewhere to lay roots. Hope you have a fantastic holiday ❤

Homeschooling is the best bet! School is for education, and you for sure can educate your child the best. You know your child. You know what works, what doesn't. It can be just as beautiful if you make it. You've nailed Arrows socialising, you can enhance her social activities outside of education. They don't have to go hand in hand. You can do it.
I live in the greater LA area too, we thought we moved to a safe area. Nothing has happened...yet...but that doesn't mean it won't. I cry every time I see a family on the news affected by gun violence and rethink everything and debate leaving. But I don't think anywhere else in the US will feel safe to me. Unless we move overseas, I feel stuck with how things are until laws change.
As a person that lives in Australia, I am thankful that our gun laws are very strict here. You can make change, vote for a president that is going to make the changes needed in your country to stop violence in schools. Here are a couple of options so that you feel empowered, teach your kid about safety, partially homeschool your child. Distance learning? In Aus we have options where school can be conducted at home with their teachers. As a person, that has a strong channel you can be an agent for change.
I highly recommend the Travel Guide from Hawaii Travel Guide (they also have a great RUclips channel) I used it last year for my honeymoon and it’s amazing they have full days planned with activities on the same route, they recommend local attractions, tips and tricks, places to park and eat (even dishes! We have a joke that the only 2 “regular” meals we had were because we chose places not featured in the guide). It’s like having a personal assistant plan your vacations and you just go and execute without a worry, costs around 30 USD and was the best spent money ever 🏝️😎
Homeschooling was the best decision I've ever made for our family. Whenever I hear things like this it reminds me how grateful I am for homeschooling.

Unfortunately unless you move to Europe or Australia there's literally no place in America that doesn't have this issue. Suburbs, cities, rural areas are all the same.

I know this is probably too late bc you’re probably already here haha but iPad, snacks and a toy she’s never seen before are my best tips for a plane ride with a toddler. I like to also do a red-eye flight coming here so she’ll sleep on the plane. But of course little ones can be so finicky about their sleep arrangements 😬 my pediatrician said it was safe to give my little a children’s dose of melatonin for the plane ride so we did that last time we travelled. It did help :)
My Heart goes out to all children and parents who have to endure this madness. I live in Denmark where it is not possible to purchase weapons without a license. I remember as a teen growing up and learning about school shootings in the states and we were so baffled as to why there wouldn’t just be a stricter gun law to aid the problem.
It is insane that now, 20 years later, nothing has changed and the frequency has just gone up.
I wish you all the best of luck in the upcoming election season - maybe the future generations will push against the weapon association 🤞🏽🕊️
On a happier note: regarding the smoothie pouches for your daughter you should be able to bring them regardless of their size :-) i was travelling from Denmark to Ecuador with my son when he was one and we had an enormous snack-pack with smoothies etc. to last us three weeks and they didn’t even question it because we were travelling with a young child 😅 the smoothies are great for lift off and landing as well 👂 have a safe trip ❤

There are lots of charter school k-12 programs in California that you can look into such as California connections academy. Students earn the same high school diploma that they would earn in a brick & mortar school. There’s field trip and extracurricular opportunities as well :) Sending love! 💕
I'm so sorry you (and all of you who live in the US) have to deal with this and I don't know how to ease your fears.
Even without that threat where I live there are still moments of pure terror - and I think in a small way that's kind of part of being a parent and having a literal piece of your heart being away from you. (For me, living out of a city it's the fear of danger from snakes, ticks, and spiders).
But 100% I would completely understand wanting to move yourself and your child away from danger like that. It's just a weigh up of probability and risk. The risk of what could happen vs the upheaval of moving again and the (more likely) impacts that'll have.
Hey, whatever your choice you make is a good choice. You're mindful and you're so incredibly invested in your family. Any choice you make with those in mind are good ones.
