20 years later, Davy Jones is still one of the best movie villains alongside the best cgi.
For real he looks as good or better than modern day animation.
It’s baffling how well they did the cgi for everything here
Yeah, after that the CGI got worse and worse with each year somehow...
@arradon2825 Earlier CGI was mostly hidden with darker lighting to help hide the seems.
It's a combination of planning things out really well before hand, doing as much as they could do affordably and practically, making sure the lighting was spot on. You would be surprised how much lighting can make something look real or fake regardless of the model. Having more shots in darkness can help hide things and enhance believability but even the shots during the day look great so, overall they put a lot of fantastic work into the modeling, texturing, animation, and rendering of Davy Jones and his crew.
@@arradon2825well thats just not true, but it holds up insanely well
Fun fact: Bill Nighy had to live into the abyss with polyps and crustaceans for 10 years in order to get the role of Davy Jones. What a talented actor.
Jokes aside, it’s a shame that he doesn’t have particular fond memories of making these films. He liked playing Davy Jones, but all the mocap started to irritate him after a while.
@@The_SafeKeepermakes sense, he's a classic actor used to real costumes and sets, I know Ian McKellen went through something similar on the Hobbit set.
@@KingsBardboth gave stellar performances at least
Jared Leto moment.
Damn…if I had a dime for every time I saw someone start out a comment with…”Fun Fact” I’d have a lot of freaking dimes my dude😅
theres a deleted scene in one of the movies that mentions the reason jack was branded a pirate was because he stole cargo he was supposed to deliver for beckett, with jack replying "people arent cargo mate". its a fantastic piece of dialogue showing that jack was only branded as a criminal because he freed slaves from the british navy*, i have no idea why it was deleted, it adds a lot of depth to his character. *Edit: east india trading company not british navy
If I recall it was cut due to time and pacing.
Which sadly made possible the things of Dead Man tell no tales.
The British Navy didn't run slaves. Beckett and Sparrow were working for the East India Trading Company when Jack freed the slaves.
@@vederianl9723 while im fine to agree that jack might have been dealing with the east india trading company and not the british directly, the east india trading company was a british company and britain totally still did deal in slaves.
@@mythman30 Oh you're saying british navy not British Navy. Ships owned by some people from Britain vs a branch of the government of said country.
Fun Fact: When Jack fell down the stairs with the jar of dirt that was actually unscripted. Him saying "I got it!" immediately after was also unscripted.
Him saying "I've got a jar of dirt" was also unscripted
To quote a meme I saw “was there even a script for this film?”
That was about the first film, but it still applies
Yeah that's why that confused look between Bloom yeah that's why that confused look between the two was actually genuine because they were glancing at the director to see what the hell was going on
I think the Bayou people all assembling to mourn Jack is connected to the Lore that the Black Pearl used to be a Slavers Ship running slaves from Africa to the Caribbean and Jack was the one who freed them. Which is why he got Wanted and Branded by the East India Corporation.
And probably the reason why Davy Jones said that his soul is worth 100 people. Because there were 100 slaves on the ship.
I was not aware of any of this
as someone mentioned in the comments that jack was supposed to deliver cargo(slaves) to Becket he didn't do it that is why he got branded as pirate
Crazy lore I didn't know about , baffled they didn't go the prequel direction after the 3rd :/
@@kiefcoffee didn't they do that for the 5th movie?
Fun fact: Nobody told the cast that Jeoffrey Rush would come back. The crews expressions are real.
Really?
@@Delta-mo6hn At least it says so in the DVD commentary. And the faces of the actors in the scene also look very genuine.
"Pirates 3: Jack in Hell"
weeeeellll about that...
I was looking for this comment lol
Me too 😂 @@t-60powerarmor
Jack: “We have our heading”
Peter Pan: “Here we goooo!”
What a time to be a 2000s kid for Disney DVD
I can hear that in my head!✨
That’s immediately what i thought of…..wow I feel old
Same
“From the magical moments within our hearts”
Literally, that tune *flooded* my brain. Instant nostalgia.
You cut out what to me is the best bit of Barbosa's return:
When he just takes a massive chomp out of an apple.
He finally gets to eat food.
Or at least, he has been able to for as long as Tia Dalma has had him resurrected, and he gets one last good om-nom in for the camera
That Barbossa reveal at the end was amazing. Apparently the cast didn't know it was Geoffrey Rush coming down those steps
Yeah you can totally see it by their individual reactions.
"I GOT A JAR OF DIRT! I GOT A JAR OF DIRT! AND GUESS WHAT'S INSIDE IT!" One of the funniest improv moments I've ever seen! Even the cast didn't know what Depp was doing. 💜
“Is the jar of dirt going to help?”
“If you don’t want it, give it back”
“No [it’s mine]”
One of the best classic meme songs as well.
Same as when he fell down the steps
Which is why their confusion is so goddam believable, because it’s REAL.
Interesting Fact: The liar's dice scene has several deleted scenes, with the whole segment being available on youtube. Those additional minutes really tie the whole scene together, making it more impactful. I think you guys should give it a look at some point.
I always wish there'd be an extended cut just for the Liar's Dice scene. The shot's pretty much finished and everything.
There’s also a video on RUclips that explains the game of liars dice in full.
can you link it mate?

"Yooo is the Dad gonna get got? Cuz he's waking towards get-got territory"
I'm CRYING HAHAHAHAHA😂😂😂
That last scene with barbosa is so iconic. If you look closely earlier scene in the house, you can see "foreshadowing" from his boots, hat and when monkey is going to other room. Also during final scene, the actors didnt not know barbosa would come back, and their faces were real reactions when he came down the stairs. What way to end the movie and hype the next one.
I remember watching and not even questioning Davy Jones appearing "crazy how they hired an actual cursed pirate for this movie".
I still can’t believe how good Davy Jones looks, after all this years it is still incredible! Guys, Dead Man's Chest was released nearly 18 years ago and the CGI work on Davy Jones still looks flawless.
The Davy jones soundtrack still hits different to this day
Hans Zimmer is an artist.
32:22 not going to lie, I’m lowkey proud of you guys for finally making that shot!!! 😂 and so soon at that!!!
Something you must take notice. The song that Davy Jones's music box plays is the same he was playing on the organ before. How curious that when in the organ is full of rage but in the music box sounds sad and melancolic.
Well what's left after the rage is burnt out? Regret. Anger and rage never last forever, but regret is something that a man holds onto for years, decades, even. Regret only goes away when you let go of it.
the fight choreography in that 3-way fight between Norrington, Will, and Jack, Is masterful. it is one of the best fight scenes in cinematic history.
There he is, Davy bloody Jones... 20 years and hollywood is still failing to top him
The Liar's Dice scene is actually very clever. There's a video that analyzes it and how the game flows and helps tell us things about the characters. It served an interesting narrative purpose, on top of introducing many children to an old game that is actually very fun. To add to the origin of that game, it's actually from the Incan Empire and became popular in Europe when the Spanish brought it over. Obviously, a lot of dark history there, but it is cool that such a popular game comes from a Mesoamerican culture.
It’s still amazing how this was 2006 and Davy Jones looked so damn real!!
If only we had CGI like this. It's not overused, and isn't used to little. It serves its purpose for his design, the Kraken, and the crew. That's it. And it works
He is real.
If you want more pirate stories, I highly recommend Black Sails.
Black Sails is written as a prequel to the famous Treasure Island story. It also incorporates modified versions of legendary real life pirates into its story.
Can we talk about how well-designed Davy Jones and his crew are? The grotesque fusion between man and ocean life gives them so much personality, they’re some of the most striking creature designs I’ve ever seen on film. My favourite in terms of appearance would have to be Palifico (the coral guy).
All the chef’s kisses to the artists who designed and brought these guys to life.
If you want more context for the vigil of all those people at the end, there's a deleted scene from the third movie that hints/explains it. After the next movie check out 'just good business (deleted scene at worlds end)' it's about 4.04 min long on youtube. Its such a shame that scene got deleted
Fun fact! None of the other actors were told about Barbosa coming back. They were genuinely surprised when he popped up in that scene.
Tbh it is really nice and refreshing seeing praise going to a Pirates movie that isn't the first one and since this is my favourite out of the bunch I am so glad you decided to randomly make and upload this.
The main ships, Black Pearl & Flying Dutchman, we're built for the movie all the extra ships were chartered for the movie.
Where I live we have a Tall Ship show and a few of the back ground ships came, they are so huge in person.
You guys make the reactions so much fun. The pirate costumes and shooting at the tv everytime they shoot in the movie. This is why you guys are the best! Keep up the good work.
Another fun fact: the cast weren't told of the actor for Captain Barbossa's return, so the surprise on their faces is genuine.
Honestly, movies like this and Narnia really show how well Disney had their CGI and effects in the mid-2000s and how the artistry of it has been lost in a lot of ways.
Ragetti, the one-eyed pirate, is second only to Jack in this series when he appears. Dude is just gold throughout. That actor, Mackenzie Crook, deserves all the praise.
1:07:47: This cliffhanger was INSANE when this movie first came out!
To give you some context, as the movies don't go into it, Beckett had Jack under his employ and told him to transport some cargo. (That cargo being 100 slaves) Jack refused and set them free. Beckett then branded Jack as a pirate then burned and sank his ship. Some time later, Jack jad come across Davy Jones and struck a deal with him. Jones would raise the ship from the depths of the ocean and Jack would captain it for 13 years. When the ship was raised it came out black, hence the name The Black Pearl.
I say this for 2 reasons. The first being that at the end of the movie, you see the slaves that Jack freed at Tia Dalma's hut, morning his passing. The second reason is that Jones' deal to Jack in the movie was for Jack to trade 100 sould for his freedom. (The same ammount of souls he had freed before losing his ship to Beckett) Jones basically told Jack to deliver to him 100 people who would become Slaves to the Dutchman. (Something that Jack is completely against as he constantly talks about how much freedom means to him.)
There's a deleted scene showing Will played two different games against Davey Jones. The first game was for Bootstrap's freedom and Will won that, ending his service. The second game is the one for the key which is what we see
Which is why Will is so cocky telling Davy Jones “you can still walk away”. He already won once, what’s to say he can’t win a second time?
Pirates 3: "Jack's in Hell" Not saying anything! 😆
One of my favorite parts of this film is the insane island sword fight. It's just so unabashedly, unapologetically ridiculous. Every single second just revels in the absurdity.
Fun Fact: nobody on set knew that Geoffrey Rush would return as Barbossa, so their surprised reactions to him appearing at the end were real!
Also, Davy Jones is kind of like the Grim Reaper of the sea, so the original deal that he made with Jack was to raise his ship from the depths of the ocean after he was burned and sunk by the East India Trading Company. Another fun fact, the "Black Pearl" was originally called the "Wicked Wench", but Jack renamed it when it was restored since the ship turned black from the fire.
I advise you to watch the extended deleted scene of when Norrington gives Lord Beckett the heart of Davy Jones. It really adds more to Norrington’s character and to Lord Beckett as a villain and global threat.
17:40 The reason they hurry is because as Gibbs said, Jack's life will end once the drums stop. The drums stopped in the scene.
My first movie of the franchise I experienced and on the big screen too. Davy Jones is a villain that I always found interesting, with his character and the visual effects of his octopus head. Ofc, the Kraken is marvel in itself as well.
32:20 is the moment we in the audience get SHOT!😱 (they finally had a shot stick to the camera🥳👍🏻)
41:51 you should make the “thank you for your patronage” clip from SpongeBob a usual part of this section instead of just doing it for your SpongeBob reactions.
In my opinion, the scene were Will gambles for the key is so much better if you watch the full deleted/extended scene. It’s another 5 minutes and it is so good.
The rules of Liar's Dice are not easy to find, but the gist is that you're betting on how many of a given number have been rolled by the whole table, and bets can only be made by picking a bigger roll or more of the same roll
Say you bet that there are six fours on the table. Someone else can only raise the bet by picking at least seven fours, or changing the bet to fives or sixes
If you go back when she accepts the monkey and lets him out of the cage he scampers off and excitably jumps onto a corpse. It's a blinka nd you'll miss itmoment but they show you Barbosa's boots all the way back then! I figured he was coming back by the end of the movie when they did that.
I still like how circus type music was played when they were swinging back & fourth in the cage. Pure gold
fun fact: jack used to work for the east india company but didn't like the way they did things. And all those people holding candles at the end where the slaves jack freed from the east india company when he wen't awol
They really need to add that scene in where he tells Beckham
Davey Jones has to be my favorite movie villain of all time, he has a banger theme, a great and tragic backstory and a intemidating design
Davey Jones is still recognized as the best CG character ever in film. It's actually insane how well he's held up and how much Hollywood has failed to replicate him. If you want to see Bill Nighy (Davey Jones) and Johnny Depp face off against each other again, I'd reccomend watching the animated movie Rango. Absolute classic and their on screen chemistry translated so well to animation.
A lot of people mistake Elizabeth in this movie for being in love with Jack, but it was always a red herring. She was fascinated with Jack yes, he represented the freedom of piracy she was fascinated with since a girl, but she never wanted him romantically. The compass pointed to him the first time because he had the letters she had just begged him for in his pocket, and the second time because it was pointing to where the chest was buried. Only flirted with him to vex him and kissed him to kill him. And I love the little detail that when Mr. Gibbs says Jack's honest streak won out, even though Elizabeth feels guilty because she believes Gibbs is wrong, he's actually right, Jack had the time to survive and chose to go down how a Captain should.
I like the trend of the tall one of the dumb pirate duo being surprisingly smart, he could've easily been a one-note stooge but he's got a lot of reflection in him. Barbossa coming back is a highlight of the series, and he finally got to taste that green apple. The next one is probably my favorite of the series, it gets even darker but they managed to up the epic scale of it.
The Magic Conch is never wrong.
But now you have the 'why is the rum gone' sequel to listen to... I got a jar of dirt.
And now we wait for the next film. "My peanut."
"What!?"
"Sea turtles, mate."
"Sea turtles" predates "Cactus" for about 10 years.
Liar's Dice is the best scene in the franchise and it's why I love Will as a character so much. He's the brains of the three protagonists. That whole bit where he plays a losing game just to learn something important to get one over on the bad guys is such an anime-esque move and I love it.
5:43 Jack was formerly a captain sailing for the EITC, with an arrangement that Jack’s pirate lineage as the son of what is essentially a Pirate Lord being kept mum so long as he sailed as instructed and smuggled what Beckett asked of him. Jack was fine with the arrangement until he was told to smuggle a hundred slaves to Beckett’s plantation. Jack didn’t agree with this and set them all free in Barbados instead. He was captured in Tortuga, branded a pirate, and forced to watch his ship burn in the port and sunk. While rotting in a cell, Davy Jones appeared to him and offered him a deal. Ten years to sail his ship once more before serving an eternity under Jones or to pay the price of sending a hundred souls in his stead to replace the hundred slaves he freed. Jack took the deal, his ship rose from the watery depths anew, blackened from the flames, and he was freed from his cell. Following this he amassed a crew with Barbosa as his first mate. They betrayed him during their search for the cursed treasure of Cortes, to the protest of Bootstrap Bill Turner. And so on and so forth.
They keep talking about Sea of Thieves watching this not knowing it literally has a Pirates of the Caribbean dlc.
I just finished watching the first Pirates of The Caribbean movie with my family last night, a couple days after your reaction to it. 😆 Also, love this one.
18:17: I love this part. 😂
21:15: NAHHH!
That Betrayal combined with the cliffhanger ending had me hooked as a child! They knew what they were doing :D
32:21 Perfect Shot!
I always thought that guy said “lamb/pork” which doesn’t totally make sense but “long pork” is such a niche, dark iykyk thing.
I CANNOT wait for them to see 3! Despite pop opinion its definitely my favorite of the trilogy
Same
My second favourite but I still love it
My personal favorite of the trilogy!
More that 3 , but yep - fist 3 just enough
@@KM-yr7xd I don’t count the fourth or fifth movie personally I don’t like those
Hans Zimmer is the one who made the Pirates of The Caribbean Music Score. The man is a genius and aside from Interstellar and Inception, it's definitly my favorite work he's ever done.
Fun fact: the reason why the price of Jacks soul is 100 souls is to be branded a pirate Jack let free 100 slaves. So Davy Jones is throwing that back in his face by making him sacrifice 100 people for himself
Missing context on why Davey Jones gives crews he sinks a chance to join his crew. He's the ferryman for the dead and refusing to do his job and ferry souls to the other side. He's letting them go lost at sea, why they slit that one dude's throat then toss him in the ocean when going down the line asking the dying men if they would rather die or be part of his crew to postpone judgement for their sins in life.
I gasped instantly when Barbossa came back from the dead! It's the kind of trope i always like, You have the first OG villain who was the main villain, And then later with new villains to face, The first OG villain comes back by becoming Heroes, Or at least an anti-hero in protagonist role 😁
It's crazy how Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa returning was kept secret from the cast and that his reveal and their reaction was genuine.
The Barbosa reveal at the end is such an insane moment even their yells understate it.
Did you know:
the reason that Jack was branded a pirate was because he refused to transport slaves for the East India Trading Company, last I checked.
Fun fact for you.
“People aren’t cargo, mate”
Okay, so let’s break down the game of dice for everyone that needs to know. The rules are such: all players roll dice in a cup and then have to place bets on how many total of a certain number there are under the cups. For example: A player can wager 5 ones, this means he is betting that out of all the cups in play, there are five dice that rolled 1.
Now to increase the bet you can go one of two ways. Increase the number of dice, or increase the value. For example, a player bets 5 ones, your bet could be to either raise it to 7 ones, or maybe raise it to 3 threes. This ostensibly changes the wager from “How many ones are under the cups.” To “how many threes are under the cups.”
The turn ends when the next player challenges the bid.
So Bill betting “12 fives” after Will is essentially him falling on the sword because HE knows there is no way there 12 fives in play, the Dutchman knows it, and Will knows it. He is challenging the Dutchman to call him on it.
This puts the Dutchman in a situation: if he calls, then he doesn’t get Will in a debt. If he doesn’t, it makes him seem weak to the crew. It is a wonderful catch 22.
Fun fact: the letters of marque and the privateer status that were offered to Jack were a real thing. Nations would pay and pardon pirates to plunder ships belonging to other enemy nations. This is also what the Seven Warlords in One Piece were based off of 🏴☠️
Them goofing around that Jack will fight the Lovecraftian Horror from inside now with nothing but a sword to the brutal realization that the movie did, in fact, just killed off the main protagonist was a wild mood switch.
I love how Boom the word says. “What?” whenever he’s confused by something that he heard or saw, his delivery is so goddam funny.
Fun fact: The part of when Jack falls down the stairs with the jar of dirt was completly an accident. He really fell down hard and the reactions of the others were real, but Johnny like the genius he is managed to stay in character despite the fall.
Jack doesn't know what he wants because the chest is useless without the key and in order to get the key he has to confront Davey Jones which is a death sentence. He also wants to be free at see but he can't because of the Kraken hunting him from the depths.
from part of when he fell down the stairs and started saying i got a jar of dirt.. all of this was improvised by depp.. thats why their expressions was like that and made scene even funnier.. from OWWW from staring at him like what is he doing
32:21 *Anxiously points at Ruff* *In Pintel's voice*: "He shot me!"😰
Had to do a callback to the first film there. Gotta say that was rather impressive, well done!😂👏🏼
so excited for part 3!
Barbossa comeback is one of the best character comeback in movies. He is my favorite.
They did, in fact, build ships for these movies.
Fun fact: I was queueing with a friend to get the autograph of one of the people who went to the moon. We started talking with the person behind who was also queueing. Turns out it was one of the designers of the black pearl + others, and their initial design was rejected immediately by the builders. They'd apparently based it on the Vasaskeppet (The Vasa Ship) (we had just been to that museum). That ship sank before even leaving port.
So yes, in the most roundabout way, they did, actually build the ships and this was how I found out.
39:14 - there is a deleted/extended scene where Will Challenges Davy Jones and wins the first round, the scene ends right before he lays out the picture of the key to Davy jones.
To answer your question at 15:24-ish. They did miniatures for the big full pulled out shots battle pieces (and explosions). They half built ships for the close ups (like on the deck type of shots) during battles and others. They had it in a special building where water would be sprayed and it would rock back and forth!!!
I 1000% recommend looking up the behind the scenes for these movies! It’s really cool and interesting!!
Technically the girl (I don’t know the actress name) who play Elizabeth was technically under age for the first movie. She had to have her mom with her on set. She also was really scared to jump off the ship in the first movie, it took literal days before they got the shoot that they ended using.
1:06:22 Those are the slaves Jack Sparrow saved, they are mourning Jack.
Funny there was a theory of how Jack keeps being lucky getting out of trouble or seemingly escape every scenario. The theory is that Jack's hat brings him luck every time he puts it on evaded issues. Kinda funny how he kept outting hats on throughout this movie and was constantly unlucky. In the first movie he took off his hat a couple times to save Elizabeth but evaded getting hanged by intertwining with Elizabeth and Will. Just a theory not confirmed
39:10, If you haven't already, I highly recommend you look up the extended version of this scene. It is CRIMINAL that it wasn't included.
To sum up, Will bets 100 years of service against his and his father's freedom and wins. Jones does a sarcastic little clap by hitting his pipe against his claw and as he walks away Will demands another game. Jones stops and tells Will, "You can't best the Devil twice," to which Will replies, "Then why are you walking away?"
if you didn't know already, fun fact:
there is a deleted scene explaining the whole Jack - Davy Jones origin.
Jack had prior dealings with the east india trading company, was transporting cargo for them on his ship "the wicked wench". some time into his work for them he was ordered by Beckett to bring 100 slaves from Afrika to America. Jack set them free instead because "people ain't cargo". as punishment he was brandmarked by Beckett, his ship set aflame and sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Jack then struck a deal with Davy Jones to raise his ship - burnt now, that's why the black pearl is black and so "run down". The deal was he could have his ship for another 13 jears as captain. then the mutany started and Jack lost the Pearl.
that's the backstory which for a reason I will never understand they cut from the movies - and that's also why Davy Jones is asking for specifically 100 souls, 'cause that's what Jack lost his ship for once before.
Davy Jones is one of the best villains in cinema. Period. And still looks so good 😭
1:06:21 Those people were indeed holding a vigil for Jack. According to supplementary material, they were slaves, whom Beckett tasked Jack with transporting on the Pearl (then called Wicked Wench). Jack instead took them to Tia, and set them free, resulting in him getting branded. Beckett's fleet eventually hunted him down, and sunk the Wench, which is when Jack called upon Davy Jones and made the deal. Since the ship was burnt by Beckett, when Jones raised it, it's wood remained black.
30:25, "Yeah, he said- OH SHIT!!!"
That's exactly what Jack Sparrow was thinking.
So the backstory of Jack and the Black Pearl is he was part of the navy and Beckett told him to transport 100 people to slavery and he said people aren’t cargo stole the wicked wench with the 100 people on board Beckett then had the ship attacked and sank and branded Jack as a pirate. Jack then made the deal with Jones to raise the ship from the ocean although it had then been burned black so Jack renamed it to be known as the black pearl. Jack would captain the ship for 13 years then join Jones Crew for 100 years which is why when Jones asked for 100 souls it shows how Jack changed as he lost the ship trying to save 100 people and was then willing to sacrifice 100 people to save himself
FINALLY! A reaction to this movie where someone didn't ruin the Barbosa reveal! Every other reaction I've seen of this movie someone always blurts it out before the reveal happens and it pisses me off so much lol. That reveal when I watched it for the first time was nuts! So good! I hate when one person makes a correct prediction and ruins is. Let the unexpected happen lol
IMO this is the best pirates movie of the franchise. Davy Jones is an epic villain.
The most unbelievable part of this movie is that the water wheel sequence was done practically. They were actually on/in that fuckin thing sword fighting (with a lot of safety lines and a very carefully controlled roll-speed, but still)!
Edit: Large portions of the sequence were done practically, there are obviously still some portions that are clearly CGI, but most of the wide shots and closeups where it's not like, tumbling off a mountain were practical.
If I’m not mistaken, technically the Flying Dutchman and Davy Jones are two completely different pieces of pirate lore, but these movies decided to combine elements of both to make their version of Jones
There were cheers in the audience when Barbosa came back.
Going from the build of suspense to the equivalent of a football stadium applause within seconds.
58:39 Batman's looks like he's having traumatizing day right now
20:40 oh this moment!!! 😂😂🙌🙌 iconic.
they didnt even tell them who the captain will be
so the look on their faces is actually true surprise
CPT Jack is like the Obi-Wan Kenobi of his world and has managed to piss off like every evil person and get away with it💀
Watching these with you guys has been so much fun I genuinely feel like I'm sitting on the couch with ya'll. You're gonna go absolutely crazy for the next movie
