@similaritiesendhere it's true he wasn't a technical wizard but he didn't have to be. He fit right in with the 80s showbiz environment that was prevalent at that time. He was given an opportunity and he made the most of what tools he did have

Memphis territory was full of chomos. Ken Wayne is in prison right now for CSC on a 13 year old. Eric Embry said that Lawler might have never smoked a joint or drank a beer but he had some serious issues and skeletons in the closet

The more I hear from Honky, the more I respect him. He appears to have aged best out of all the 80s wrestlers and can remember the stories from back in the day better than anyone. Certainly a clever guy knowing it wasnt going to last forever and getting the $ in while he could👍
I started watching wrestling after seeing Honky vs. Ricky Steamboat. That match was amazing. Cool stories too. I still wonder about the Rick Rude death cause.
@@MatthewGreensley-ed5hvAs Honky Tonk Man he made plenty money. He wasn't a great athlete. He could sell, knew how to work a crowd, and he could talk trash with the best of them. The Honky Tonk Man gimmick was perfect for a heel. Wayne Ferris made it work.
I don't think too many people will disagree with that. It's that listening to him talk sometimes, depending on the subject, he comes across as salty af. Like his prime waned right around the time wrestlers started making real money. That Elvis impersonation might have worked with crowds in the 80s, but it wasn't going to carry him through 90's.
Jerry Lawler and Honky Tonk Man certainly have an off and on relationship as cousins. It reminds me of the dysfunctional relationship with the bulldog cousins, Davey Boy and Dynamite Kid.
I wonder if he was one of the ones that pooped in Lawlers crown when he arrived at the WWF. Story was there were a lot of people upset about Lawlers payoffs in Memphis and Vince had to threaten the locker room to get them to stop.
All those years being The Honky Tonk Man and people ripping him off left and right. I didn't really care for him, but I understand his frustration in the business.
Yea i dont see why so many talk so highly of memphis it always seemed like a second rate product compared to rest of territory’s. Booking, production etc. No surprise Lawler and Jarrett ripped everyone off.
In Jerry's book he wrote that Honky was talking $#!+ online. Jerry called him out on it, and Honky was like "We can work together, and we get some heat on this." And Jerry was like nope. I think it had something to do with 1. Not talking to him first. And 2. Talking about Jerry's mom. I think because their mom's are sisters? 🤷 So my guess on why they don't talk, is because of Honky.
Not all cousins are close, and him and Jerry have had a lot of issues over the years. I am on good terms with my cousins and even still I barely ever talk to them. Last I heard though they had patched things up and are fine now, but that can change at any time.
More to the story, he was told to drop the belt and them tear down his character and give him another, but didn’t bother to tell him what it was or how it was supposed to work for him. Thants a career killer unless it’s a real good one.
Shout out to the legendary Honky Tonk Man🔥

@@olstar18 he is very consistent whether he is drunk or sober. I believe he is honest.
I always liked the Honky Tonk Man but now watching these interviews he’s in my top 10 greatest of all-time.
He said "one of his (Lawler's) teenaged queens". Jerry is a sick dude it sounds like.
Memphis territory was full of chomos. Ken Wayne is in prison right now for CSC on a 13 year old. Eric Embry said that Lawler might have never smoked a joint or drank a beer but he had some serious issues and skeletons in the closet
THE FIRST 30 SEC I THOUGHT THE HONKEY TONK WAS BEING INTERRORGATED BY THE IRS.😂😂😂🎉
The ultimate warrior interview from around this time is like a 2 hour prisoner of war interrogation.
Had the privilege of seeing the Blonde Bombers when they worked for Nick Gulas. I was surprised to see Wayne in WWF as the Honkytonk Man, but what a superstar he became
Before he went to wwf he was in southeastern...with fuller....armstrong...idol...golden
You would think that being cousins, Jerry would want to look out for Honky Tonk Man. It's a shame that money and ego would come before family.
Im with u.... If someone is like f*** family, whats the purpose 🙃

I hated Honky as a kid, he was a great heel. I have grown to really dig him from all the shoots I have seen him in.
Peace and love
6:39 he knew about vince 😂
strange thing to say! I wonder what he meant...
Everyone knew
Ferris was a good heel. There are guys that spent their careers making the “stars” look good. He was one of them.
Legendary booker and manager Gary Hart strongly disliked Memphis Wrestling, stories like this were part of the reason why.

Well this interview was 25 years ago lol.
Honky Tonk is the most honest wrestler ever!!! Plus #GoElvis
He's very wise
Once he got the opportunity to be the Intercontinental champion in the WWF, I don't blame him for running with it as long as he possibly could.
Honky Tonk man my top 5 for promo and in ring antic's
If I ever hated my cousin that much I just wouldn't talk about them
7:09 UHHHHH did he say Vince McMahon was chasing little boys? how do we not follow up on that?
Wayne was a really good tag wrestler with Latham as the Blonde Bombers.
I started watching wrestling after seeing Honky vs. Ricky Steamboat. That match was amazing. Cool stories too. I still wonder about the Rick Rude death cause.
I don't care what people say. He was good in the ring.

😂😂
I think his mother and Lawler's mother are twins.

Not all that unusual. I have like 12 first cousins and I really only have any kind of relationship with two of them.
I wonder if he was one of the ones that pooped in Lawlers crown when he arrived at the WWF. Story was there were a lot of people upset about Lawlers payoffs in Memphis and Vince had to threaten the locker room to get them to stop.
Would Honkey have even been in the locker room or even doing anything in WWF around that time? Probably one of many other guys.
First mark here 😂
Here's the thing, if your asthma name wasn't Lawler, Jarrett or Dundee, you didn't make money in Memphis
He was the one doing the work regardless, not them
It's best to get backroom stories from as many angles as possible. The truth is going to land somewhere in the middle.
Honky Tonk was tuff. Good wrestler
He’s going off on his own cousin
Cousin isn't a big deal in a place like Tennessee half the state are his cousins!
$999? Man that ain't a thousand.
It isn't
UPDATE: They've buried the hatchet.
Honky tonk is straight up good folk…
Jerry was always jealous of Honkys good looks, dancing, and singing abilities!
I know you can't be serious
@chriskimmel7736 Yes he is..

I never got what people saw in Jerry Lawler the only thing entertaining he did was his angle with Kaufman
Aren't they cousins?
HTM got lucky twice in a row
Steamboat wanted time with his new son after winning IC and Butch Reed no showed since he was suppose to beat Steamboat

Greatest ic champion of all time..Gunther is as exciting as watching paint dry.
When money is involved, family doesn't matter.
I’m abducted to these interviews now.
Like him or not, Honky tells it the way he sees it.
I'm from Memphis I thought Wayne and Jerry was cousins

The ring boys.

In Jerry's book he wrote that Honky was talking $#!+ online. Jerry called him out on it, and Honky was like "We can work together, and we get some heat on this." And Jerry was like nope. So he was picking and choosing who he would drop the belt to. I think that's out of line and he really didn't have the clout to get away with that.
Clearly he did
Ya no way Wayne had the balls or cache to leave with the IC belt. I've heard him claim that a few times.
Idk but this guy gives off Elvis vibes 👀
Did Honky Tonk say Vince was chasing little boys?
Yep he did say that... anywhere kids go Satan is not far away, it's a sick world...
No one's gonna have a gay pedo as a right hand man for decades unless he's the same! Birds of a feather
😂😂
he's said it for years, it's the big reason he was blacklisted from wwe. the rick rude thing got him blacklisted almost everywhere else, though.

What happened with Rude???
Now I've met Honky Tonk and he was a pr!ck, but if that's true, why would you treat your own first cousin like that?? Lawler seems like a pr!ck too...
I heard he wasn't a good wrestler to meet.
Listen to the lesson here, people. Never got a check that size again.
Imagine if he had said “Thank you! How can I help us get to $2000?”
Because they were trying to be the same character?

Honky Tonk talking about a man being bitter while being bitter himself and the irony that is lost on him is hilarious
America 1st ..... maga baby maga 👍
Hinky gives out about his payoff then says he was trained to shut his mouth. Which is it?
The more stories I hear about these paydays and the backstage antics the more I think its all bull. So unprofessional
They're first cousins. Of course they still talk lol.
Bullshit. I haven’t talked to my cousins in YEARS. 🤦♂️

No big deal in Kentucky 1st cousins are married
Older man wanting young girls!!!!
999 😑
Wayne always full of grievances.
HTM is so delusional. He was lucky to have that one run with WWF, if not for that run, nobody would have ever heard of him
You need luck in the wrestling business, Mean Mark Callous wasn't ever gonna draw a dime, then he got lucky, Vinnie Vegas would have drawn even less
Sounds bitter and weak
