I found this video while researching making my own custom rack with help from 3D printing. I wanted to see what the feature set of modern racks. This was extremely helpful and well done!
@jeremymoller1038 Thank you. I'm glad you found it useful. I can't remember if I mentioned it, but I did try and create a 3D printed lock for securing the axle QR lever. I gave up as I couldn't get sit strong enough. However, as part of that, I modelled the outer assembly that holds Thule lock barrels. If you are interested, let me know, and I'll chuck it on thingiverse.
Hello, I recently bought similar Orbea rise and I’m looking for good roof rack. How is your experience with this bike + this rack? At the store seller told me that the bike is dangerously close to the weight limit. In addition, this weight is distributed high (because of battery) so that the bike can sway a lot. Can you recommend it based on your rise?
Hi I've had no issues with the rack it's much easier, and safer, to load the bike than other roof racks I've used in the past. In terms of weight it would depend on which Rise that you have. Mine is the carbon version M30, which is lighter and from memory it's at least a few kg under the racks max. My friend has the Ali version ( H20 I think is the model number) which is heavier but under the limit. Bear in mind that removing the front wheel saves some weight. We have traveled a fair bit with it including several journeys of over 100 miles. Never had an issue or noticed swaying issues. Not sure if your store rep is just being cautious or trying to push a different rack or is not keen on roof racks.
I’ve owned a top ride for a while now, it’s a good rack, but, while it is very is very easy to load a bike, it is also very easy to remove. This is my criticism of the rack. I feel it needs a lock on the quick release mechanism, the rear lock is not sufficient enough to stop someone having a go at stealing your bike. Just been emailing Thule about this, to see if there was any modifications available, sadly not. Would be interested if anyone has come up with an alternative? Good video by the way. David
Thanks for the feedback glad you liked the video. The closest thing I'm aware of to lock the wheel axle is the replacement axles available from SCIDS mentioned in the video. This is an axle with a drilled hole at one end for a padlock this works with my old rack and the new FastRide HOWEVER this would not add security with the top ride because the jaws are not lockable. If they added an option to lock the jaws and the axle it would be more secure. I'm conflicted as to whether this is a disadvantage since I don't think anything they added would be much more secure. Better option I think is to add an additional decent lock or not leave unattended.
if someone wants to steal your roof rack mounted bike, they will steal it. This mechanism is perfect and doesn't motivate theft 😂😂😂 what a ridiculous thing to say

@@DTSquared agreed about not leaving unattended, just a faff on the odd occasion at motorway services, having to put on a massive ‘Gaurd’ D lock.
The other option is the yakima highspeed, but some have issue with mtb brake fit. And it cost a bit more.
