Came across this video looking for info on how to get the shell off the Bachmann GP40. Thank you so much for that. Although not on this particular model but we have seen a fair share of such grinding noise in many locomotives, the primary reason being a loose wire coming in contact with moving parts usually the shaft. Double check if that is what is happening when you put the shell back on. Hope that fixes it for you. Cheers.

I'd pull the truck apart, remove the wheel/axles and access the contact strips without it on the truck. This way you can get a good, hot solder connection between the wire and the strip, without melting the truck body or sideframe sides.
That sounds like a much better idea. I haven’t looked back at this video in a couple years or so I think. I think next time I need to do it, I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks.
@@skylitejunction5589 yes. I've found it's easier to disconnect the wire from the fiberglass circuit board, and reconnect it there, rather than risk injury or damage trying to solder onto the side of the truck.
I have one that sounds like it has flat spots on the wheels. I am not inclined to want to take it apart. Maybe Bachman should pay better attention to quality control. That is not from being overlubricated either.
Found this while looking for a video of how to get into the Gp40 so I can service, clean them. I have the Two Bachmann Santa Fe GP40, 3507, 3508. And they run fantastic. 8 years now still pull strong, and silent as. Mine are DCC not sure if that makes a difference

I would run it without the shell, not a single noise was made. All I heard what the wheels on the tracks. When I put the shell back on, it’s making that horrible noise. So yeah. Not sure how to get rid of it. Lol.
@@skylitejunction5589 I'd look on the inside of the shell for signs of contact, if none seen, colour shell with a marker in areas where moving parts seem to run close, E.g. motor area. Then run and re-check. Can then remove a little material 'sandi g with drum sander on dermal" at I time until all runs fine.

@@skylitejunction5589 all good. I didn't have a permanent layout myself, that being the reason I stick with the Bachmann track. At the moment I'm playing with the idea of making directional block signal lighting to add. In under a section of 9" straight, to then simply daisy chain to other's via a 3 or 4 wire ribbon layed under the base. I've managed to make a reversing loop, and point turnout lighting to show open or closed switches. All build into the bases,. I other controls needed, all off the track power, so it's all just plug and play as normal. Can send you pictures if you're interested
The Bachmann's are designed for easier access than how you did this. Just take off the truck sideframe covers, drop the wheels and you can solder the wire from there.
Yeah, I didn’t know you could do that till later on. I think the problem I found was the body is…I guess hugging the chassis? I’m not really sure, but it’s still making that awful noise. Hopefully I’ll find a way to get rid of it. It’s not the motor, nor the gears, or anything. It has something to do with the shell on the chassis. Just don’t know what, yet.
Just bought the Bachmann 'Rail Chief' set with the BNSF GP40-2 loco. Yeah the loco is a bit noisier than my other HO scale loco: a Mantua FP-7 A/B combo in Pennsylvania RR finish. Nowhere near as noisy as yours though actually I rather like that it makes a little noise as it somewhat simulates a diesel loco running..as long as it doesn't get too noisy indicating something is wrong. No problems so far pulling a seven-car consist.

I was soldering some wires cause they looked important, and I feel the heat shrank a super small part of the shell. So yeah, haven’t ran it cause the noise was bothering me so much. I might have to give the Mantua engines a try. They sound pretty good. I’d plan to buy an 4-4-2 Atlantic by them eventually, maybe those diesels can be another thing I can give a try.

Thomas The Tank Engine Yeah, it actually had something to do with me snapping that red wire while I was doing some maintenance on it. It did still work, 100%, surprise surprise. Lol. But I thought it be best to solder it back on, I did the first time with different solder, and it made that first noise. Solder it again with proper electric solder, and it didn’t turn out too bad in the end.
Thomas The Tank Engine You’ll never know man. I probably wouldn’t say that. I did knew at some point that I need a soldering iron, but I never was too fused about getting one. But yeah, maintenance is key to model railways if we need our engines to run nice and smooth. This is the first time I’ve ever have to solder something, and it didn’t turn out too bad in the end. You just have to be very careful where you touch the tip though, cause it’s as hot as magma. lol. But yeah, as long as you’re careful on maintenance when you don’t snap any wires, you should be okay. That’s the lesson I learned. :)
Western pacific railroad Productions That could explain the noise it’s making. It could do for some maintenance. Possibly a lubrication, or depending on what motor it is, it may need taken apart, and cleaned. Hopefully you’ll figure it out. ;)

Oof, that sucks. It might sound like a gear has a crack in it or something. Since they’re nylon I think. That could be the issue.

I'm really happy with mine -- it's one of my best pullers. Also, I found for this purpose, a solder pen works best.

I never had, and I don’t know how either. Though, there is tutorials of it on RUclips. Not to do it on this engine, but to help you on how to do that.
