Human "instinct". Not that I believe humans have true instincts, but there are some things so deep in our subconscious, so much part of the deepest base of our understanding of the world, or things where our brain reacts before we are consciously aware of it, that it is as close as we get to instinct. I think the Uncanny Valley is part of that, and AI images can ping that part of our minds.

This! The one with the person in the orange shirt standing next to the giant “crocheted” lion is a great example: the lighting on the lion vs person seems to come from a different source without casting accurate shadows and the colors are much more vibrant and saturated than the scene around it, making it look like it doesn’t belong in that photo (because it doesn’t).

My answer was EXACTLY my point. Even the most professional and beautiful pieces of work no matter what they are will have a flaw or two if scrutinized closly enough. Why? Because real art in any form that is made by hand and not a machine, looks genuine and is from hours of love. You cant make love. You FEEL it.

also every time anyone said things like "wow this is beautiful! you're so talented! how long did this take??" the account owner just thanked them and didn't say anything about how it's ai 😭

    • @kray3883
      @kray3883 6 месяцев назад +57

If you wanted to do one, you would need some kind of armature inside for support. If I wanted to make one real I would be using an armature, some stuffing but not that much, fabric matching the yarn or one shade darker, and then yarn as a non-structural layer. Anywhere there was a problem with gaping you could either tack it all in place or fill in extra stitches. It would be a huge project, though, like prime time commercial level budget.

The general rule of thumb to detect ai is that everything just... melds together. Due to the way generative AI works, it does not exactly know what part of the image is a hand and which is a dress or hair, which means that often it will just... blend them together. If someone's fringe suddenly becomes the wrinkles on their forehead or if someone's fingers turn into lace, it's likely ai-generated!

That's what's referred to as 'like/share farming' Especially with things like facebook posts. People will put up sob stories and sad pictures and implore people to like/share to help. Then eventually when whatever threshold is reached they will edit the post and change the image and story to something else, either for themselves, or because they sold that past to someone else to fake that their thing/idea is popular.

A "big white moth purse,..." is doable, but/and it sounds very detailed (perhaps making use of a variety of fibers -- silk, fringed yarn, chenille(!)😊,...). If not "made by" a professional designer (think: *CREWS OF crocheters working round-the-clock for a fashion designer), graduating students of fashion institutes have final projects that are also incredible in detail/workmanship! In both cases, I don't know that a pattern would EXIST! More likely, there may be sketches, inc. insets/magnification of what (stitch) is suggested to attain 'the look'. 🙄In any case, are RUclips travelers probably looking to take-on such a project? [If so, I would suggest appliqueing parts of formals, wedding dresses, misc. fabrics + trims to a base purse or assembling sections that you have crocheted in various stitches, to make it a "crocheted purse". Either way, you can say you did it! It IS possible, and your project would be unique (...🤭and you will learn a very practical reason "why" these PATTERNS don't exist!🤯). Try it! Good luck☺.

For me, spotting AI follows a few steps, based around the concept of ‘mottling’
Mottling is when the image seems to warp and deform like melting plastic. This can be seen as fused fingers, tangled or cobwebby string/hair, or any bizarre mangling in the image. Mostly it will be small warps, changing the shape and form of small details like teeth or eyes. This is best seen when zoomed in, as AI is capable of getting most of the general beats right, but struggles in detail. There are also what I call ‘artifact bubbles’, where discoloured floaters appear in the image with the texture/look of oil (colourful sheen, etc.)
    1. Blur your vision, look for anything that feels different, this is a good way to spot inconsistencies or mottling
    2. If you can’t find anything wholly wrong, but can tell that something is wrong, assume it’s AI
    3. Take a once over of the image, look for artifact bubbles.
    4. If there are no artifact bubbles, look at hairlines, mouths, eyes, jewelry etc. These are common locations where mottling will occur.
    5. Examine hair and fabric for further mottling.
This is a very comprehensive method, but it’s helpful if you’re not sure.

Crochet is naturally ugly and thats ok, but ai removes the ugly and adds weird hyper detail thats tiny and mashed. Shit looks weird and not natural, therefore. Fake. I hate what ai crochet has done to facebook.

I'm talking specifically about those pictures of the grandmas standing next to a crochet tank, or a lion or an elephant or whatever. pieces that big would be SO expensive to make, not just with the yarn, but whatever stuffing they use to make something that heavy actually stand straight.

Another way to distinguish more realistic ai images is to seek for “tangents” or connections between items that shouldn’t exist: hands blending into clothing, hair strand blending into the shoulder “outline”, etc. A lot of the time AI images will have two objects share an outline in a way that doesn’t happen in real life.

The thread on that green dress looks like it was haphazardly thrown onto a pile and then flattened and glued or something.
There are also so many ai embroidery images that don't show real embroidery, you can tell by the weird texture of the various threads, one looks like long short stitches and is crisp, and the other is an incredibly zoomed in french knot that's blurry, from two different actual embroidery pieces. The thread on the long short is regular embroidery thread but the french knot looks like it is SUPER chunky yard because of the close up. And there are weird tacked on stumpwork parts that seem glued to the hoop for some reason. The colours are also weirdly intense.
In one of my embroidery groups someone posted a picture of an ai photo to show how it was fake, and then went to actually recreate the image. Her piece looks great, it's incredible, but not as vivid as the ai one, and the 3d stumpwork details are not there, because she made something that actually exists in reality. It's kind of sad.

If you can't tell which images are ai, you can't tell which seller is a scammer, and which made a beautiful pattern that actually exists in reality. This goes for crochet, sewing, embroidery, woordworking, miniatures, etc etc. 2. Beginners think they can recreate something that is impossible, because the stitches, or materials, etc don't exist. Which means many beginners will not continue, which means that certain crafts die out, and with that an entire history and know-how disappears. 3. Knowledge about crafts is sketchy as it is, people who sell their work get so many comments about the price, and customers have very unrealistic expectations. People order a custom embroidered portrait of a pet, and the price is 200$ and then when the piece is almost finished they offer 75$ because they saw a pet portrait printing company making posters for that price. (this is an actual thing someone I know experienced) They already have extremely skewed ideas about what is possible and how much it will cost, and ai will only make that worse.

Some examples here are at 0:57 (some of the bricks near the woman’s head appear to be melded together), 1:01 (river canal turns inward towards the woman’s figure on the right, and the big building in the back seems to be on top of what looks like a bridge structure even though there’s no sign of a bridge going across behind the woman) and 1:09 (metal pole with no purpose is randomly in the background, the perception depth between the old woman and the car is screwed, and the woman’s garage seems to go way far back than a normal garage would).

Still, I do love them in a way. It is just a fun thing to look at and they are sometimes beautiful. Also, I mostly don't really crochet with a pattern and so I often found myself trying to "reconstruct" the A.I. item, how could they be constructed in a proper way and how they would actually look like if crocheted for real. I do realize that making most of them would require a lot of time and effort.
So I don't really mind most of these A.I. images. I found them fun. Still, I prefer to see the real stuff which have actual effort in them for you to admire and only look at the A.I. stuff if only I choose to (which is actually not that often).
And I do have to put the line down against the people who pretend these are real stuff and trick people. Like, no! It is one thing to have fun at seeing what an A.I could come up with; deception is just evil.

Exactly! Even if ai is mentioned in the caption there will still be people commenting like it’s real. I just want people to know it’s fake.

I had started commenting on the posts to call out the ai and then the algorithm flooded my feed with more, and now I have to block these pages ahah😅

@@crochet.with.illjayYeah the only option is to ignore them. Otherwise the algorithm thinks, "Oh you interacted with these videos, you must like them, here's some more!" Doh.

Another big clue is the drape of the fabric. So many AI fiber arts have really weird draping that doesn't follow the natural draping of the cloth

Sometimes AI crochet pictures also link to a "pattern"... But when you buy the actual pattern it's just AI generated mess too... So be careful!!

Some of the AI pics are genuinely great ideas that would be with a little reality tweek really cute. I could see AI helping designers come up with new ideas.

I never thought there'd be an AI problem in such a niche community.

This just inspires me to create and photograph a huge project that people mistake for AI.

AI is so frustrating. It's stealing data from actual artists of all types and creating stuff based on that data. It's nothing but very specialized plagiarism.
There's actually people on the internet who truly believe, that because they set the parameters and made the AI make something, it is intellectually their property, and will swear that they made it and use AI as nothing but a paint brush.
Recently AI creators were caught speaking about artists as nothing but source material for their AI, and not a single one of the artists had signed a contract of any kind that would suggest doing so willingly.
AI is a cool concept, but there's a huge lack of protections that victimize artists, and people are far too infatuated with it to notice or care that it's happening.
    It's a problem.

I can now differentiate ai pictures because of its filter and perfect picture and looks a bit animated, i always commented that "it was obviously AI" but sadly most people will believe in fake images

You are absolutelly right. But this gives inspiration by it's crazy multicolorness and multidetailness. For me these are the ideas how to step over the rules, to make something insane. I never share such things, I keep them for myself to cheer my fantasy. And I can say, what stops me from trying to make a straight copy - I imagine unbelievable amount of DUST that these beauties may instantly collect while being crocheted😂😂😂

id like to see people make actual crochet pieces of ai, like those kids dresses, but make it better than the ai picture
