Thank you so much for such a clear and concise video. I am a single mom and with the help of this clip, I was able to fix the starter cord on my son's mower! He is special needs and mowing helps calm him. You helped save me the hardship of transporting this mower in my car Plus the cost and my son is happily mowing the heck out of our yard!
Seeing it done first saved me from taking the whole recoil unit apart! The video showed how simple and easy it was to do! I can't wait until one of my neighbors' cord breaks so I can impress them with my new found knowledge!
Thanks for the video. I called a repair shop and they told me the length should be 87 inches, I bought a 96 inch cord rope at Home Depot and followed the video. My rope was too thick to fit through the guide on the mower handle so I untied the handle end and ran the rope through the guide and retied the end for the grip handle. The cord rope cost 14 cents a foot or $1.12. I though about buying the whole starter assembly for $13.50 but the shipping cost was $8 as no one in Mpls had one in stock, plus I would have to wait a week for delivery. Repair was very easy and I complement you on the video. =============================================== My Honda HRX217 mower has lost its self propelling as the spring has fallen off the belt drive. How do I reattach?
I broke mine in the middle of cutting the yard. Went to the local hardware store, watched this video and was done from purchase to starting the lawnmower in thirty minutes. Great video!!! I did a boat knot then slid the rope from winder to the outside. Yes backwards but it worked for me. Thanks!!!!
Broke the starter rope on my Honda the very first time I used it. Thought I'd have to pay a repair bill. Or send the machine out for a week while someone fixed it. Nope. Saw this video. Fixed it myself. Finished the lawn. Thank you.
This video was exactly what I needed. After I got the replacement cord I was able to replace it almost in real time with the video. Super quick repair. Thank you for showing me how to fix myself.
thank you. i replace my first pull cord today after watching your vid. perfection instruction and I was able to replace cord on the 1st try. great quality vid with great instruction. many thanks from kansas city.
Hi, Great video! One of the three nuts that holds the starter assembly to the lawnmower will not loosen as the nut is slipping under the starter assembly. Can you inform me how to access under this area so I can loosen this third nut? Thanks, Ciaran
Thanks! Do you happen to know if just about any "lawnmower" rope will be good to use? As silly as that question may be, I don't know if other lawnmower strings are different and cause issues when pulling in the rope.
what does it mean when the rope is hard to pull/won't come out more than a foot? it is a Honda but not same model as yours, just says Honda. also, I turned it over and pulled all dried grass out from underneath then tried to start it; the rope came out a bit more easily (still hard to pull though) but did not go back in. could you tell me what is this from, means what as a symptom? thx~ I really like your video
Does this same thing apply to the snow blower? I have a Honda HS 520 and the pull cord is shredded. I'm sure a certified repairman will charge an hr or two so I want to attempt it myself.
The ropes are usually between 18-22 inches long. Most people have a 15-18" pull . If it's too long the rope will fill the pulley and cause problems and too short means you won't get enough pull.
when I turn the three nuts on top to loosen them, the screw turns with them so I can't take them off. Is there an easy way to fix this? seems like I have to access the bottom of the housing somehow to make sure the screws don't turn.
The nuts are threaded onto studs that are threaded into the block and are used to mount the entire blower housing. Sometimes you can use an impact driver to get the nuts to come lose. If that doesn't work, remove them with the studs and separate them once you can get to both sides. Once you have the studs out I like the Red Locktite on the threads and screw them back into the block.

should I get a starter rope specific to Honda? or are there generic ones that would suffice?
what does it mean when the rope is hard to pull/won't come out more than a foot? it is a Honda but not same model as yours, just says Honda. also, I turned it over and pulled all dried grass out from underneath then tried to start it; the rope came out a bit more easily (still hard to pull though) but did not go back in. could you tell me what is this from, means what as a symptom? thx~ I really like your video

Great video; very well imaged and explained. I have an HRR 216 - is it basically the same process?
Does this same thing apply to the snow blower? I have a Honda HS 520 and the pull cord is shredded. I'm sure a certified repairman will charge an hr or two so I want to attempt it myself.
is it the same as 216 model
Excellent presentation.

I purchased a rope and handle from home depot but it seems short, how do i measure the right length? "i dnt have my old rope"

and cause problems and too short means you won't get enough pull.

what if ur starter dosent want to recoil???
+Travis Kueneman If the recoil is not binding up and spins freely, you may need to remove the rope and tighten your spring another turn.
