It would have been really nice if you two iwould have offered something in return as a gift to the monk. It’s all about the flow... energy should be exchanged. That’s a true balance. It’s not about taking without gifting back... really good lesson from the monk. His heart is in the right place even if his energy exchange has not been reproccitated.
