If the tiny stems are cooked, heated they aren't poison anymore! I like the freezer method when I have room in the freezer.. I just filled mine with local meat and peaches💃Love your videos... Gonna make jelly and a the leftover juice to bottle!
We are harvesting elderberries for the first time ever this year and this was just the perfect information that we needed 🙂👍 thank you so much for sharing!!
I love it! Try, research, try again research, try again! Thank you for sharing the past fails as well as success... Oh man, those pour lids are great. I'm definitely putting those on my must have homesteading list. I've been canning syrups for years and never knew those existed!
This is my first year harvesting elderberries and I took forever de-steming them about half way through the season I started to freeze them. I am freezing my berries so I can make small batches of syrup through winter. I also put arrowroot in mine to thicken it as well as add other beneficial properties. Thank you for the video.
Great video!! I will be using your recipe! My daughter been buying the syrup for my granddaughters, but I will be making it now thanks to you!!! Plus if I make it I will know what’s in it and how it was preserved...
Thank you! Adding this recipe to my home herbal! And looking forward to trying the homemade V8. My tomatoes didn't start making this year until a week ago!
I've been making jelly & syrup for years. Discovered syrup when I forgot the acid while making a batch of jelly. My youngest made some real good wine from elderberries one year.
I don’t can or freeze and never did, but this looks very interesting for those that do. I’m sure it’s very helpful. You are such a smart women.God bless you, your family, and your farm.
We have always used a steam juicer for ours! We make jelly and syrup from ours. Unfortunately live in east central New Mexico now and there are none to be found without a long drive. but we had a few good years so we still had some juice leftover from 2 years ago.. God Bless y'all
Good morning Annie Farmer's Farm. I hope you don't mind me stepping in to help out, but if you go to the video that Andrea produced on May 23, 2019 called: WHY YOU NEED TO LOOK FOR FREE ELDERBERRIES NOW, Andrea shows you not only the elderberry bush, but also the flowers. There are lots of on-line photos of the mature fruit clusters, as well as fruits from assorted varieties. Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA -- 8/12/2019.
It looks yummy! It’s very rare that any of us get sick, so I’ve never looked into anything like this. But, I may give it a try. My husband doesn’t mind being my guinea pig 😂😂
Great video Andrea. I love the information you share. I have a quick question after watching this. You said the stems and such are toxic. What do you do with those when you are done with them? Are they safe to compost? Should you add them to your burn trash? And what do you do with the juice mixture once you strain it? I hate wasting anything and love to know the best way of disposing of things.
Appreciate the information rich video Andrea. You do a really good job. I love that you research things like you do too. We don't have black elderberry here sadly. The blue that do grow here are not the same but make yummy jelly. Nurseries here don't carry the American native elderberry you have. With that said, where do you recommend getting dried elderberry?
bulk herb store is good and I like this brand too. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RR27PHU/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=vwff0f-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00RR27PHU&linkId=c6fd6c222d7e20c845904c5ee6a9232a
This is so interesting to me! Does anyone know if elderberries grow in Minnesota? And u say u bought dehydrated elderberries before...where did u get them? Does Azure Standard sell organic elderberries? I really want to try this...this was a very good informative video to follow....I just need to find organic elderberries. Thanks!
It appears that most of the dried Elderberries ive seen for sale online are imported from European countries and are then probably the European variety of Elderberry but most people in America that are growing their own berries are growing the American varieties , so im wondering if the lighter color juice is all because maybe the American varieties of berries are causing this difference.
Thank you Andrea! I am making my.first Elderberry syrup right now. I ordered a bag off of Amazon and there are a bunch of little stems in there. I have plans on planting my own elderberry bushes on the spring. Hoping to get my whole family to take it. Doubtful, lol
I just comb very ripe berries off the stems with a plastic hair pick. Works like a charm and moves quickly. Then, when I wash them, I run them though a colander to to get any tiny stems or trash out.
Just FYI! I used needlepoint canvas that I got at Walmart. I cut them to fit my dehydrator trays. They work well, and are so much cheaper than dehydrator trays liners
Thanks for the video. I would like to know after using the elderberries for syrup the first time how can we preserving the pulp to reusing again and if so how long can we store? I made some and put the pulp in a jar in water and stored in the refrigerator. Thanks for the help.
Okay so just ignore my question from your other elderberry video on your 3 methods of removing them and dehydrating them. I will use your preferred method this year. I will update you. Thanks! 🙏👍❤😁
We planted 3 elderberry bushes of the "Ranch" variety. We purchased them from an Oklahoma farm. 360 Farms grows Oklahoma native elderberries. They have over 7000 plants in production. Next year I will need to process them so this video has been very helpful. 👍🙏❤😊
Very timely! I recently harvested elderberries for the first time (from my neighbor's pasture ditch!) and have a ton in my freezer ready to shake off the stems. Last fall I scored a steam juicer at the Habitat re-store for $3.00 and can't wait to use it. I did learn the hard way to wait until the berries are fully ripe because picking off the green ones is a total chore. We bought some elderberry syrup at the Shindig from Broussard Homestead that was so good it didn't last a minute, so I'm eager to make my own. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing all of your trial and error wisdom! Your video came at just the right time--we picked fresh elderberries for the first time a couple of days ago, and although I have made elderberry syrup from dried berries before, I had never started the process with fresh ones. Thanks again!
Cant stand cloves..smell or taste. Will not using them make a difference? Found lady local that makes it but no way im paying $40 for a qt. If i can make my own.
I cook fresh or frozen elderberries and it always comes out dark. I don't mix honey in mine when I jar it, because I water bath can it. Then we take a tsp of each juice and honey per day. Also elderberry jelly has the same benefits as the juice, win win.

We are harvesting elderberries for the first time ever this year and this was just the perfect information that we needed 🙂👍 thank you so much for sharing!!
I'm in the UK. Could one let us know the drying out method please. Would a regular cooker be able to perform the same task?
Perfect timing for me being the first year to harvest my own. Appreciate the info. Love and prayers ❤
My mother-in-law made elderberry pie when she was in her 80's, sooooooo good!
What a wonderful video! Andrea you are the best at explaining things. Thank you so much. I am going out today to pick elderberries.
The very best jelly I ever ate was Elderberry Jelly.
My husband's cousin was living in Missouri, picked the wild blueberries and made the jelly. Yum!
Elderflower fritters are great too. Obviously a very beneficial plant to have in the garden.

Just FYI! I used needlepoint canvas that I got at Walmart. I cut them to fit my dehydrator trays. They work well, and are so much cheaper than dehydrator trays liners
Can you use parchment paper?
jelly or pancake syrup, wine good, too. :-)
I love your grease dripping jar on your stove where did you get that at if you don’t mind me asking
I think it came from a flea market years ago. Thanks!
Yarrow Willard the Herbal Jedi uses a fork to pull them off. He’s got some great videos on here about it
Thank you! I'll check that out!
I had someone bring me elderberries today but they aren’t black. They are purple green and red. Should I trash or juice

I haven’t done that. Usually mine is pretty spent. Let me know how it goes.

Won't the water bath canning destroy the honey?
1/3 cup of dried elderberries is equal to the weight of 1 cup of fresh. I use 4 pounds of fresh and 1 gallon of water
Love your tee-shirt. Does canning the elderberry syrup kill the benefits of the honey?
Thank you! Probably so.
How much sugar would I substitute the honey for if I wanted to can this mixture for the shelf instead of refrigerate it?
I am not sure. I haven’t done that before.
do you think adding alcohol vodka or bourbon in place of half water would extend shelf life?
Not sure 🤔
Okay so just ignore my question from your other elderberry video on your 3 methods of removing them and dehydrating them. I will use your preferred method this year. I will update you. Thanks! 🙏👍❤😁
How long does the syrup last in the refrigerator?
I’ve had it last for months and months.
I order from Azure Standard also. But they don't list dried ginger root only powdered. How much powdered should I use. thank you
I would order some on amazon as the powder might make it chalky.
@@VWFamilyFarm i found it. Thank you!
I just read that u can use the elderberry juice for second ferment in making kombucha....have u ever tried that?
Oh how I would love to do both. Syrup and kombucha... I need the berries.
yes it is good but not sweet on it's own without honey.
Second yr on new elderberries plants have not got a berry yet how many yrs does it take to get berries
hmm mine had a couple the first summer but I had planted them in the winter.
Where do you get already dried elderberries if you don't have access to fresh ones???
So weird the dried berries I bought from an herb school,
smell like dirty feet?
Andra I thought u added rosehips also. Wasn’t it equal hips to elderberry
I don’t think I added any in this recipe. Not sure the ratio. Thank you.
How long does it last in the fridge? And can the syrup be kept out of the fridge? if so for how long??
Thank you x
I haven’t had it go bad yet. It last for months. You could probably can it and keep it out of the fridge but not just at room temp.
VW Family Farm thank you very much for replying. Have a great day x
Will elder berries grow in north central Texas?
Yes
Destem fresh ones with a fork
yuse a forck
I just cut the whole stem and made jelly

Thank you! Just harvested our first from our homestead. We have taken it for 2 years and we swear by it!
Finally! I was wondering how you did this!
I've made elderberry tea from online. The bag contains dries berries & leaves.
Is that just as beneficial as the syrup?
Was very expensive.

I've ordered from Mountain Rose Herbs before.

You can use a fork to pull them off I just planted this year 4 plants but I'm going to hydrate some they say to wait for the 3 year to use them
