Last Stardust is - without a doubt - one of the most memorable insert songs in the Fate/stay night franchise and I have been asked for numerous times, whether I will ever upload a piano arrangement on my RUclips channel. Well, today is the promised day!
I listen to Aimer's music a lot in my free time and her deep, yet strong voice is absolutely fascinating. The most exciting part of Aimer songs are always the chorus part, because you can really feel the power in her voice. Sometimes, I feel even the sound of an entire grand piano is not powerful enough to do Aimer's voice justice (笑)
This arrangement is also based on an improvised version I have played in my Animenz Live concerts in the past. But compared to the live concert version, this final version is much more polished, has a vastly improved musical flow and is technically also more challenging, especially the piano solo section near the end [4:46].
The most difficult part to arrange however was the super long bridge section, starting at [2:46]. The music is building up its tension nonstop for a whole minute and I really had no idea, how translate it to the piano without sounding too repetitive.
I have been experimenting again and again with different voicing on the piano and it took me a long time to figure out the best balanced way to make the piano sound as exciting as possible. It is basically a roller coaster of emotions, using the entire musical keyboard of a Steinway Grand piano.
I also used a unique technique for the final chord [6:20] of this arrangement: by releasing the notes one by one, you can create a very interesting effect on the piano. It sounds like the notes are slowly dispersing in the air.
To be honest, there were many times where I just want to give up arranging this song. I couldn't see how to improve this arrangement even further, despite my best efforts. I could technically just "upload it as it is" long time ago since most people probably won't notice all the small adjustments I did in the arrangement.
But I know that deep down, I can do even better. I just have to try hard enough.
In a way, this "Last Stardust" is the spiritual successor of my "Brave Shine" arrangement from 2016 ( • Brave Shine - Fate/sta... ), because I dedicated my entire musical knowledge into arranging this song for the piano in the best way possible. I hope my feelings in the piano music can reach the audience as well this time...

Aimer songs are always something special to me, so I was thinking for a long time how to make the piano sound even powerful than ever. This piano arrangement was so close to being dropped multiple times, because I was trapped in my own perfectionism again, trying to meet the expectations of everyone. I am glad I sticked to the end and finished this arrangement after all. Thank you everyone for listening!
As a non-classical pianist myself, the techniques you employ in every video never cease to amaze. Dual voicing, LH drum beats, and the "note fade-out" technique at 6:20, amazing! I wish my channel can grow to the likes of yours one day.
Of course, the nagging whispers of perfectionism will always persist, but the cheers and support from fans like us will always come out louder. Even if you aren't satisfied with some of your works, we can tell that you poured your heart into it!

This is, without a doubt, one of the best arrangement you've upload this year yet. I've tried to arranged this piece myself in the past, so I can relate so much to your struggle. This song repetition is very hard to balance in the piano, and Aimer's voice is just so strong that without a proper consideration, a mere piano solo won't do it justice at all. As someone who has tried and failed to make his own version satisfying, I know full well how much hard work has went behind the creation this masterpiece, it is simply inspiring.
There is so many lovely attention to details that makes the arrangement sounds very polish : The varying LH rhythm at 0:37 gives the piece a very proper start and buildup, the double melody at 0:50 is very well implemented. The dreamlike passage at 1:37 to brilliantly transition to second verse. The second verse variation just sounds so natural and refreshing.
My personal favorite part is definitely the bridge and final chorus build up (2:46 - 4:15). It was simply phenomenal. The attention to detail at the first part giving, the gradual buildup to a powerful transition, the soft chorus melody as a buildup. This part gives me the feeling just like in an original song. The magical moment that tells you that "no matter what happen, you will be alright" I haven't experienced this feeling in a very long time.
And of course, how can we forgot the ending. That is as you said, it is one of the most powerful and heart-wrenching passage from you since Brave Shine in my opinion, the powerful runs that leads to one last soft chorus melody before the song dying down, it allows me to imagine the character that is on his last leg, breathing his last breath, but he won't back down from this battle, he won't give up, no matter what.
Do you remember in one of our conversation that you suggested me that "the way to motivate yourselves is to watch other people and believe that you can do it someday"? Well, that person for me is you Animenz. The person who time and time exceed my expectation and show me the new possibility, the one who always stir up emotions and inspirations within me to keep going with everyone of your masterpiece. I have to thank you once again with this video, you've made my day.
Absolutely well-done man. Your hard work is well worth it! hopefully someday, I will be good enough to try arranging this song again, but until then, I can at least believe that it is possible, since you have proved it to me that it is.

Thanks for the feedback, CSM! Indeed, the repetitions in the original song was the biggest challenge, since it only works with Aimer's powerful vocals being added. But for a piano solo piece, I had to take a different approach and structure the piano arrangement in way, which makes it feel exciting from start to finish. Hard work always pays off (eventually), remember this my friend!

The reason why I regard Animenz as the best leader of the entire anime piano community on RUclips:
From my perspective, this upload is a very special one. This represents an experiment which have taken him few years to finish. Animenz is always trying his best to make his music perfect by making repeated attempts. I first heard this piece on one of Animenz’s albums(Anime Piano Works vol.3.) and I was amazed instantly.
But this arrangement is even way more amazing.
1. Animenz has added a very quiet part at the very beginning compared to the one he played at Animenz Live. This allows audiences to “slowly get into music” without sudden.
2. compared to the Animenz Live version, he has switched the connection part between the first chorus and the second verse to an octave above. (1:37)Which feels quiet and enjoyable. And that allows audiences to take a break after listening to a piece of strong melody.
3. compared to Animenz‘s album version, he added three-hand-technique to the second verse(1:48). By doing this, he successfully made each part has its own special characteristics.
4. by switching the fast arpeggios to a big glissando at 2:19, it becomes way more direct and straightforward. I love it.
5. the additional three hand part at 3:55 has given me the feeling of stars, which is fantastic.
6. The special technique used at 4:32(Idk how to call it lol) is also very fantastic. I feel like it is similar to some part from HERE which is also arranged by Animenz. The whole arrangement reaches to the climax at that part. It is just amazing.
7. Although the ending part is referencing the beginning part, Animenz has also made some little changes to the chords. To make it sounds “the same but different “
Animenz is the one who tries his best to bring the most beautiful anime piano pieces to us.

Animenz is the one who persists in doing anime piano arrangements without giving up.

Arrangement thoughts:
Wow. I can really tell how much arranging energy you put into varying the techniques and phrasing in this song. It started off soft and simple. But the second the octave jumps came in at 3:43, i instantly felt the nostalgic Animenz energy and style come rushing back until the end of the song. I got chills at that moment. The descending sixths at 4:51 reminded me of the run at the end of the bridge of your Sayonara Memories cover (albeit more spaced out pattern). The jazzy grace note teased at 5:13 led into a beautiful jazzy closing cadenza. And then the classical style descending run at 5:39 brought back the classical feel from your older works. Overall, a fantastic and complete work. Great job!
The dynamic control is also quite exceptional on this particular cover. There is a clear distinction between the nuanced touch of the pianos and the forceful energy on the fortes, especially the descending run at 3:40. The evenness on that run really took me by surprise.

I too, agree that nothing can quite replicate the power, timbre, and uniqueness of Aimer's voice. Every one of her songs is a gem.
Last Stardust is indeed a mix of everything I have learned so far as an Arranger! Both the "early" Animenz with the classical music references, the "jazz" decorations at the end, as well as the current "improvisational style", they are all included in this arrangement. Thanks for your feedback!
I don't watch a lot of anime (all I know is Naruto and One Piece), so I've never heard this song before. I'm also not a pianist, I don't play any instrument, so I can't explain what I'm thinking in the "right" way, but I must say, I really enjoyed the way you play this song. Just hearing the piano sounds gave me goosebumps without even knowing the lyrics. I heard the original song and read the lyrics after watching your cover, and I have to say, you beautifully translated the music into your arrangement and really managed to capture the emotions of this song amazingly, just like the singer. That's why I love hearing you play, your arrangements are marvelous, you make me like lots of Anime songs even though I've never heard the original. I have been following your channel since 2014, and you never cease to amaze me. Also, I think this is my first time writing a comment, all this time I only gave a thumbs up on your videos hehe😉

This is honestly my favourite piano arrangement by Animenz.
As a kid, I was not interested in piano at all. I would only practice enough times for the "exams" because my mother was the one who wanted me to learn the piano. Eventually I gave up piano after I entered high school. I have always been an anime fan and listening to a variety of Anisongs.
When I saw Animenz's arrangement of my favourite song, Last Stardust, I decided I should give it a shot. I never thought I would pick up piano again but hey XD My basics were really bad owing to the fact that I seldom practiced my scales and arpeggios when I was young and now this is haunting me again XD
Until now, I have been practicing every day for 1.5 months and I can finally reach full speed except for a few parts. The process was very tough but I enjoyed it very much. I just want to say thank you to Animenz for making me fall in love with piano! With more practice, I hope I could play this song entirely in the near future :D

Hey boss. You know, Fate has a very special place in my heart, especially UBW, and as an Aimer addict I'm really glad you provided us with such masterful arrangements of Brave Shine & Last Stardust. In fact, even as an experienced pianist, I've been struggling for a long time over your Brave Shine arrangement, and I'm finally getting close to the "vaguely sounds like music" stage. I still have a long way to go, but giving it all on the chorus really gives me chills over the keyboard.
You've been spoiling us over the past few weeks with fantastic arrangements of legendary songs. The gift of sheets you used to offer us is one that was so miraculous, it is hard not to feel a spark of frustration when it gets taken from us. Of course, I'm sure you know this, and likely are trying to find a solution. It is not a complaint; being able to listen to and enjoy your play for free is already much more than we could ask. Just know that as long as anime fans exist, you will have followers willing to grind the hell out of your supremely difficult arrangements, and who will be grateful forever of getting a challenge combining their love of anime, music and piano.

As I've continued learned this arrangement, the amount of detail put into each note and chord is simply STUNNING, to say the least. This is indeed very beautiful. You make this much more enjoyable for me (personally) when I see that different kinds of techniques are added into the playing in order to play all parts of the song out. That's one of the biggest things I absolutely love about you when you transcribe different kinds of anime songs I like into piano, so that one day, when I'm good enough, I can actually learn the and right now, listen to them. Vielen vielen Dank für dieses Stück, hab seit Brave shine nur darauf gewartet, Last stardust auf dem Klavier zu hören :)) Einfach nur unglaublich, was für techniken und verbesserungen dahinter stecken.
Ich bin dankbar dafür, dass du mich dazu motiviert hast, wieder klavier zu spielen! Nach einer jahrelangen Pause habe ich durch die videos auf diesem Kanal eine leidenschaft gespürt wie selten zuvor! (Ich als otaku war davon fasziniert, so hochqualitative adaptionen von anime OSTs auf dem klavier zu hören) Dank dir habe ich wieder mit Klavier angefangen und habe das Ziel verfolgt, irgendwann Anime OSTs auf dem Klavier spielen zu können! Vor allem war Unravel eines der ersten Stücke die ich hier gesehen habe (und Tokyo Ghoul einer meiner ersten animes), seitdem bin ich ein absoluter fan der arrangements hier auf dem kanal!
Das Konzert in Berlin 2018 war ebenfalls fantastisch, ich bin froh, dass ich dabei sein und die schönen Stücke live hören konnte!
Und zuletzt, als fan der fate-serie, insbesonders UBW, bedanke ich mich für Brave Shine und Last Stardust, 2 sehr symbolische Songs aus UBW. Mein ohrwurm davon wird wohl nicht verschwinden XD
Jedenfalls, einfach nur herzlichen Dank für die tollen Stücke, die eine besondere Motivation für mich waren und öfters meinen Tag gerettet haben :) Ich war schon besorgt, weil letztes jahr sehr ruhig war (habe mitbekommen, was für eine schwierige Zeit es für dich war). Für die Zukunft wünsche ich nur alles Gute und freue mich auf die Uploads, die dieses Jahr noch kommen werden!😁😁
P.S.: Ich bereue es zutiefst, dass ich nicht zum Konzert in Seoul letztes jahr kommen konnte! Als Koreaner, der in Deutschland wohnt, wäre es ein echt cooles Erlebnis gewesen bei beiden Konzerten dabei sein zu können😄

Brave Shine and Last Stardust were the first Aimer songs I've ever listened to. They were so powerful and I loved them so much that I started listening to every Aimer song, anime songs or not. It's been a couple years since I consider Aimer my favourite singer and I love everything she sings, but Last Stardust is still one of my favourites. I also happen to love Piano and your arrengements.
This one hit me so hard that it didn't take long for the years to start to come. By the end my eyes were red and aching. I guess it was out of pure love for this song and specially your arrengement.

Hey, I noticed all the small (and large) changes you made from your live performances, it makes a huge difference in the feel. Especially that last chord, I've experimented with that before but never achieved something as beautiful as that chord. Beautiful arrangement, amazing performance!

animenz... in all seriousness, I genuinely have no possible idea how to tell you how much I love this song and your arrangements. It's so powerful and dynamic and nothing feels repetitive and akfjlafjka oh my goodness I love it so much. The countless times I got goosebumps listening to certain parts of the arrangement. I loveddd the jazzy undertones at 5:13 but how it circled back to the classical-styled run at 5:39 which truly made the piece feel like it was authentically arranged by no one other than you. And also I absolutely adored the run at 3:40 it was so amazing (no like actually I think my soul left my body at 3:40) I honestly think this might be one of your best arrangements and definitely one of my favorite ones. There are so many other things that I loved about this arrangement but we'd be here all day if I went on. But anyways, I love every single one of your covers and you genuinely inspire and motivate me to become a better pianist. Loved the arrangement and you're so amazing.

This version is way more beautiful that is beyond what I can imagine. some of the texture ideas that you used in your left-hand part is absolutely gorgeous, Thank you for posting this out and arranging sound like a kind of music that is only possibly appeared in heaven. If you do not mind, I wanted to transcribe some parts down, then transform into my original composition by using my own creative path.
