So cute to know that the recording is conducted by Shostakovich's son and played by his grandson. That's like 3 generations to come up with this performance - composer, conductor, pianist
I've been looking for the sheet music of this wonderful piece for a long time and I can't find it anywhere, and I always ask to make a synthesia video, but no one pays attention to it. I remember when someone did a full synthesia version of Prokofiev's third piano concerto and I was so excited and happy
14:45 I’m sorry but what I did not expect was the theme of one of my Grade 8 pieces to be in the trumpet part, almost note for note. ruclips.net/video/0FqCqwaoXVg/видео.html it’s a Haydn Sonata.
This concerto has multiple references to other pieces, most of them being of the classical period. It's almost like a sarcastic parody dialogue between the orchestra, piano and trumpet as they weave and improvise through different pieces.
This is just a guess. The trumpet soloist is James Thompson and the pianist is Dimitri Shostakovich Jr. The conductor is Maksim Shostakovich. The orchestra is I Musici de Montréal.
A hodgepodge. Goes from serious to cutesy too many times because it cannot hold interest otherwise. Know it is a sarcastic statement but don't need to hear it.
I'm afraid I agree. Yes, it's cute and silent-movie-ish but many of the notes are purely arbitrary, drab and grey. The 2nd Concerto is miles better IMO.

yeah so true!
The composer himself recorded both Concertos.
So happy for family endeavors, but the concerto stinks.

I'm playing that same Haydn sonata! When I heard it I was shocked too xD

Saw Yuja play this in concert and she slams her forearm, and the audience laughed, so you're not alone!
Formidable.
Fascinating concerto. A pity however, that he doesn't develop this little "passionato" idea here: 4:31

I checked the album covers and James is the trumpetist.

Am I being crazy or is that piano out of tune? Beautiful recording nonetheless. Love the video!
Yes I think it is out of tune
