Get that Volvo saved ! My dad has been working for Volvo the past 32 years, pretty rare car too ,would be so happy to see it saved and have it get a new caring home.
5 cylinder turbo? Doubt it could pull more than 130mph out of the factory. James James - what do you mean unheard of in Europe? This is a European car. You think we haven't had BMW's and Mercedes and Audis and VWs until recently? You know they are all European cars....don't you?
Just write "TURBO", "RUNS, DRIVES GOOD", "COLD AC", and/or "400 OBO" on the windshield and somebody WILL ask for it and hopefully pick it up! Interior needs lotsa help but the engine and exterior need a lot less workin' on for now. ^^ Let us know if someone takes it away Jay! That Buick Park Avenue looks like the one Hoovies owns, try a video on that! Maybe the Dodge Dakota or the Nissan pickup in the background? The Hyundai if you're feelin' good?
Sadly it's the low pressure turbo not the full fat T5 otherwise that would fly out the yard for $400. I've had two 850s and I remember them being fantastic cars that never gave me any problems.
The Swedish Brick...excelled in safety and reliability! I still see these old school Volvos in New Jersey. Someone in my neighborhood has a late 80s red Volvo station wagon and it runs like a champ. This video's Volvo owner took mighty fine care of it. I assume it's crushed now, bummer.
Did you take her up and down the highway a bit??? Things that can do in a car of that age you don't know about until you get her up to speed, nice and hot, stuff like a blown head gasket, maybe a transmission that slips in 3rd or 4th gear going up a hill at 60-70mph. Stuff that isn't obvious if you are just driving around the lot. Still it sounds healthy for that many miles. This was Volvo's first FWD car sold in the US(the 400 was slightly smaller, FWD, debuted in the 80's and was a Euro only thing). A lot of Volvo enthusiasts say this was kind of the beginning of the end for built like a tank Volvos, the ones from the late 90's/00's were a lot more fragile.
My life painting professor Dan has a '94 240 Wagon with 500k on it, He had it since he was a teen, literally his first car still runs but a little noisy. Jay you should probably save this Gem, a little detailing she'll be good as new.
With some love and a clean it would be good for another ten years. I bet it would make it to it’s 400,000 mile badge too If I lived in the states I’d come buy that
TBH I thought that volvos was one of the worst cars but after seeing this I now learned that volvos are really tough cars I'm sorry volvos I was wrong you are one of the best cars ever
man that thing sounds like it runs good, clean it up and see what it needs, it didn't even have a CEL on, that car has another 100k-150k in it easy if taken care of
This car was probably a trade-in. The amount of time and money the dealership would spend prepping it for sale would probably cost them more than their selling price of $1200.00. So they're better off junking it for $200.00.
RenoMan probably been taken care of a lot of people will do anything to keep the ac working in their vehicles, i personally havent seen a volvo WITH working ac or a Mercedes or even a BMW for that matter after living in 2 states.
Exterior straight, interior ratshit. I like those five cylinders. Sounds weird but distinctive. Still a good looking car. Bastard to repair I have heard.
A brick to me is a 240 or 740. 850 to us old school Volvo folk (I.E : ME) are the less long lived ones, lol. 301k. HAH! I had a 1981 244 GL that had 804,000 on it, was forced to retire it due to RUST. Had another 1980 244 with 531,000 miles on it, had to retire it because I couldn't get a title for it. I'd still rock a 850 from that era though. Sounds like it still runs quite well!
When I think about more, a 7/9 series is a Grandpa series, a 240 is the brick as you say and the 850 is disqualified due to FWD. While I always will prefer a 240, the 7/9 series are indeed the better car even if they aren't as much of a drivers car as the 240 is. I'm talking about these cars being a little bit modified from stock. Otherwise, they are just good ol' trusty nuke proof beasts that get the job and then some. Ironic I'm driving a Buick Roadmasher and Audio Quintro 1.8T these days. I think I needs a brick or Grandpa Series or even one of those Eight Fiddy Turblows.
I commented the same thoughts, before I read your comment. 'Bricks' were the 2 series. Volvophiles hated these when they came out and replaced the 240 in '94. I guess non-turbo 7 series from 80s and early 90s were good, as well as basic, non-turbo early 9 series.
Agreed, the ultimate 'brick' is a RWD, redblock powered 240 with the huge 'commando' bumpers. I have one in DL trim, she's almost 40 years old but with only 74k is barely even run in. One or two patches of rust (driver's door bottom, front of hood) but the arches and underside are squeaky clean. She turns more heads than any modern car; I wouldn't swap her for a 740 (nice cars that they are) far less an 850.
As far as the 850 series, it does have a few rarities. Examples would be: A dashboard that's still tightly mounted & doesn't rattle., ECC or Electronic Climate Control (It was optional.), Condition of the leather seats, Cold Climate package (Optional) which includes front heated seats, headlight wipers & heated rearview mirrors. Unfortunately, the passenger front seat is not a 7-way power seat. There was also an OEM heater block that came as an accessory as well. However, it probably needs A LOT OF BASIC MAINTENANCE ITEMS, such as: PCV replacement, turbo rebuild kit from Mitsubishi, rear main seal, front lower control arms, upper strut mount plates, engine mounts, etc.
Richard Unicorn I use to think the same thing man, but not any more. Those are on our list for most scrapped car to date. The 3800 are so damn picky, one late oil change and they’re toast.
my friend in college head is Mom's old 850 Turbo and I remember somebody smashing the parking lens with a shopping cart. The dealer was only one that had the part and it was $750 just for the plastic lens assembly. My Camry cost $42 for the similar part LOL
Awesome! the AC works and it starts right and the odometer works! Imagine that over 300K miles and it runs! 1996 850 Sedan. Actually worth fixin up and driving.
not sure if you do requests but I would love to see more of those Buick's and the Impala and what appears to be a Rodeo or Passport in the background but most importantly why was the Impala scrapped? not sure if you have videos on the vehicles in the background but would be neat to see them and that old volvo should not be in the scrap pile! looks like the prior owner of the Volvo just parked it and forgot about it then scrapped it?interesting video for sure!
Too good to scrap. Just needs a clean. These are great cars. I’ve just put a 96 850 back on the road with 230,000 on the clock. Easy to fix and maintain and very reliable.
I always thought 'the brick' was referring to the previous 240 series than ran through '93. Those 850s were considered new tech when they debuted, and were actually frowned upon by the loyalists at the time. Always heard that the 240s and the non-turbo 7 series were the ones that would go forever. Don't think they're worth a damn anymore, tho. Volvos from the last 10 or 15 years seem to be dirt cheap all over Craigslist listed as "mechanic specials", and the leather must be as thin as saran wrap, as they're all to pieces. Of course, now 50 ppl will comment above saying that their 2009 S60 turbo has 600k miles, perfect leather, and never broke. LOL
Amazing , sometimes a manufacturer engineers a car so well,850 was expensive when new, my old Subaru Legacy AWD wagon from 1991 was with me for years to 2015,bullet proof for me.Time marches on.
My mother had a 94’ model that she bought as a demo back in the day, I don’t believe it was a fancy turbo model like this one but it had leather and a sunroof. She sold it not too long after I was born but she swears she wants another one just like her 94’ PLEASE KEEP THIS BABY
There is a guy in my town that has one of these.. it’s a built sleeper and is super quick. I used to think these boxy styles were ugly but they are growing on me.
This is genuine VOLVO, not the crap manufactured in Asia today masquerading as Volvos????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!This was a European quality product. Leader in safety, way before its time. Agreed looks not so great. But good car in its hay day.
The UK supplied NEW Volvo's are built in Sweden...owned by the Asians but most not built there. More worryingly is that the new S60 is to be built in America...I bet people will suddenly say they are good again because of people's narrow minded thoughts. They still lead the way in Safety, Comfort and Style. The new cars are great and winning award after award so why do people say they are going to be crap? Well, about 90% of people on here that say that just can't afford a new one so they will slag them off instead. How are they masquerading as Volvo's when they are designed purely as one in the first place? You could buy an Audi which is also a VW, a Seat and a Skoda - all on same platform. Thats masquearading
He scrapped it for $200 but bought a new Volvo? They would've given him far more than $200 on trade. But I digress---I'd power wash it, do a light cleanup on the inside, and put 'er back up for sale. It's worth it to someone to find the missing interior trim
My family used to have a 95 Volvo 850 non turbo with a 5 speed. I’m not sure how many miles we had before we scrapped it but I remember for a good 2 years, it sat in our driveway not running. We scrapped it in 2008
My neighbour back in the 90s had this car. He was a Malaysian Chinese eye specialist. Went for a ride a few times, my brother and his kids, drove like a nutter. Really lovely interior but it is rare to find one today in good condition.
While every time I go to Gary's You Pull It (A scapeyard in Binghamton New York) I see at least 3 or 4 of these things, normally because of rust and sometimes a wreck.
A couple of years ago my dad had a '92 volvo 850 GLT automatic and it drove like a dream with more than 200k miles on the clock, But on day my dad accidentally put it in P while not a complete standstill and it destroyed the transmission and was too exensive to fix it.
I've done it before working as a truck driver so shifting gears for 9 hours a day to get into my car that's an automatic and slamming it into park whilst still rolling as if I was just putting it into neutral with the 18 speed.
Yup, this video is ironic considering i actually just bought a Volvo on the day you posted. Same colour too. Only ours is an '06 S80 D5 with a mere 190k on the clock :D Not quite the same legendary build as the 850, one of the last of the true old-skool Volvos, but still a sight more durable than most cars from this millennium. Hope someone saves the old girl, but if not i think a proper Viking send-off on the back 40 is the most appropriate thing for such a car.
Save it, It dont deserve to die
*Doesn't
Nikola Nikola does gaydo
That car has definitely done its job with 300,000 miles. Then the fact it runs and the AC still works. Clean it up, save it, and resell it.
Yes
Let Robert DIY know. His Volvo is near 500,000 miles and still running. That'll be a good project for him. Save it! It's a good car.
This would be right up Robert's street just needs a general clean up and some TLC :D
really? i have an 06 camry been thru so much random shit has 400k still runs just needs manual but auto is just a little slow but it runs fine
Robert DIY would love this car!
It needs more than you think, but it would be worth it! As long as Jay doesn't drive it for too much longer it should be fine.
That's still a perfectly good car everything works and it sounds like it runs fine too. I'd say that's a keeper. Just needs some tlc
Yes
"Look at all those chickens!"
Best cars ever made. My 93 940 wagon has 445k on it. I drive it every day.
So true so true...
Sad many miles left on it
Agreed. My 95 wagon has a bit over 500k which is also my daily, but the odo/speedo is broken again and I can't get it working for some reason.
Also 1993 945 nearly 500k 😛
BTC my dad has a 2008 with 85.000 miles on that car
My brother used to have a 98 Volvo V70, and we still have it as a family backup car. It has 212,000 miles, and still runs and drives pretty good!
I usually don't really care if you crush a car or not but please keep her alive. She doesn't want to die. Clean her up and treat her nicely.
Get that Volvo saved ! My dad has been working for Volvo the past 32 years, pretty rare car too ,would be so happy to see it saved and have it get a new caring home.
Don't crush it.
Richard Unicorn i couldn't crush it. It deserves to live
If it did get crushed, the crusher would break.
Lol

I love those body style volvos...
Jay this one pains me because I love Volvo’s especially old ones they are so strong!! PLEASE JAY SAVE THIS CAR!! She still runs!!
Auto climate control, traction control, heated seats, leather, this thing is hooked up better than some economy cars today..
IN safety it was way way way ahead of its time.Full of bells and whistles. Unheard of at the time in Europe.
Sure as hell faster than an economy car. This car will do an honest 145-150 mph. They handle and have great brakes too.
777jones 150kmph surely, not 150mph HAHA
5 cylinder turbo? Doubt it could pull more than 130mph out of the factory. James James - what do you mean unheard of in Europe? This is a European car. You think we haven't had BMW's and Mercedes and Audis and VWs until recently? You know they are all European cars....don't you?

Good wash and vacuum and you'd get about $600
joey ledford i agree
joey ledford round here about 600 to 800 in south carolina
In Spain you could sell it for 2000-3000 euros if it looks new. ( That's equal to almost the same amount in dollars)
new center console too. you can find them on ebay
drive it another 306K miles!!!!
Yooooo Jay I'll give top dollar for that my dad has been looking for cars like this for ever.

Wet Lettuce It's a T5.. Has the extra turbo gauge.
I have a 2001 s60 non-turbo 2.4 with 340k. Drive it 100 miles everyday. Original motor and trans, never rebuilt!
I've got the 2002 S80 with the NA 2.4 engine going on to 252k miles no problems :D
keep it and drive it,,,sounds great to me...dont scrap good cars man....keep em alive if u dont want it,,sell it,,,but dont kill it

Old Volvo’s= unkillable
Chris F The turbo ones are faster than most cars on the road

You have to restore that thing! It doesn’t deserve to die like that if it runs and drives!

Energetic Fox Studios most likely, not
Any Volvo newer than 2000 is shit.
nope
that's a negative, wasn't Volvo bought out at some point??
Nope. anything 2005 and above doesn't had that good old "unkillable" charme to it anymore.

Really lovely interior but it is rare to find one today in good condition.
never in a million years I thought I see a brick in your scrap yard
While every time I go to Gary's You Pull It (A scapeyard in Binghamton New York) I see at least 3 or 4 of these things, normally because of rust and sometimes a wreck.
Love Volvos man!
my co worker had a Celica GT that finally quit on her at 333,000 miles on it
A couple of years ago my dad had a '92 volvo 850 GLT automatic and it drove like a dream with more than 200k miles on the clock,
But on day my dad accidentally put it in P while not a complete standstill and it destroyed the transmission and was too exensive to fix it.
That's tragic :(
Wet Lettuce he always drives a manual and then changing to an automatic takes some adjusting and a mistake is easly made
I've done it before working as a truck driver so shifting gears for 9 hours a day to get into my car that's an automatic and slamming it into park whilst still rolling as if I was just putting it into neutral with the 18 speed.
Excellent cars.
Save the Volvo!!!! Volvo for life
You should build a brick wall with it .
