Matthew Pham the main support was iron which isn’t good for blades that get pretty thin. Especially if they are to be made with holes throughout the blade.
While I agree, there is a reason spring steel is favored. I'm pretty sure had that material been readily available in the past, it would have been the gold standard then as well. And I for one just love Damascus so I can't really criticize anyone using it.
I think this is the normal mentality, and reality TV makes up the beef too. Think of how a random person would treat a stranger in a competition. He's more likely to behave with a basic respect or at least self control.
When the judges talking about your blade bending you know you have zero chance of winning, but with both blades having problems it was a hard choice for the judges to pick.
Yeah, I cannot remember what episode it was, but there was a sword that was so flexible that when it hit the pig it did not cut and basically bent around the pig. The other guy was looking like he had just won, but then on the first swing his sword cuts, hits the spine, and then shatters. Kinda a lame episode.
Do u know of any media or books that feature the akrafena (or African weapons in general)? I’ve grown fascinated with the sword but I’ve found only a few people focus on it
He had Asperger's or something. Notice when his opponents blade took a bend he giggled. Then when the second judge bent it back he showed concern and every time his own blade performed well he made a gloatful reaction. Kinda showed that he did not know how to provide any sympathy for his opponent or the situation he was in and cared only for leading the competition.
I wish Brock won. Like i see he went the harder route with what he made his blade out of and made it look more historic and pretty. He tried to stick to what it 100% was made out of and looked like. But idk man
I'm trying real hard to think of an episode where that wasn't the case. But most blades that end up with warps after the initial quench and the smiths don't do a second heat treat/quench end up bending or breaking during testing. Do the second quench guys!
Dude! I've been watching Forged and Fire for a week now on RUclips and today I recognize Brock who I've actually hung out with. His booth is a few doors down from mine at the Caroline Renaissance Festival. That's awesome!
Noise is vibration we pick up in our ear and transferred via electrical signals to the brain so we can perceive it as "sound", so technically accurate lol
Historic Fact: The Ashanti captured rival tribes and sold them to be shiped to the New World (the Americas) as Slaves and were a key player in the international slave trade.
@@russianbot3512 true, but let's also not forget that slavery in Africa was different than that which came to America. In Africa, most people were enslaved for a certain amount of time and released, while also having certain rights around their treatment. Chattel slavery (in which one is perceived as literal property) became more popular with the transatlantic slave trade. of course two wrongs don't make a right, but there were differences and important nuances to acknowledge in the overall treatment of slaves in Africa vs. Europe/the Americas.
@Bob Smith The nuances are important because the transatlantic slave trade resulted in much of the racial hierarchy/inequalities that are seen today between white and black Americans, and people of colour globally. Yes, all slavery is barbaric. Yes, chattel slavery was in Africa before European involvement. But it was far less common and became the main form of slavery once people were being sold to the Americas. And black people/people of colour (Natives were sold, too) became characterized as less than human to support this system in which slaves had no rights at all or hope of gaining freedom. Prior to helping with civil rights, "straight white males" added to the babarism of slavery and we are still dealing with the ramifications of that. I think that's important to note, but go ahead and keep praising yourself for ending universal slavery, as if people of all backgrounds didn't fight for that lol.
I've been binge watching forged in fire clips for 4 days now. 😂 To the point that when I eat, when my knife cuts meat, I whisper "it will cut." still working on KEAL tests but my dog keeps running away.
To be fair, it's a pretty terrible weapon design to begin with, both in material components and construction. Victims likely died of tetanus just as much, if not more so than from blood loss with this weapon.
Thats not fair to their actual skill level...being told to make any weapon like this in 4 days is quite a task and doesnt prove the bladesmiths actual skill
@@nickkeirn4638 I don't think he was being too harsh. If someone is carrying a drinking horn in their hip in the forge, then their focus is clearly more on posing than smithing.
It's episodes like these where I wish we had a more fleshed tournament system. Sometimes you have 2 master smiths in the finals, and sometimes you have 2 average smiths. Although I understand that doing so would probably up the production costs too much.
Both designs look great, but with a major historical flaw: this weapon/symbol of authority is meant to be used the opposite way. The edge should be inside, i.e. on the inward curved portion of the blade, as a sickle. Strange that nobody notice that. Great episode thought. G.JEAN, African arts historian.

personally think they made the wrong call here. the other dude had pieces missing from his blade while the other only bent. You can re-harden and temper a blade, you cant fix chips unless you reforge the while sword
Funny how chain guy did better in almost in all tests, first test he took bent but damage was deeper, second test was good and nothing happened but other dude got chip on blade and last test his weapon cut almost 3 ropes and other guy blade couldnt even cut 1 rope and he won? I disagree that he won
@@teewithey5879 The editing is really bad. It just shows it bouncing off the final rope. Then the tester says it cut through 8 and you can see that when they pan out. Just not a well edited clip. I went back a few times thinking the same thing.

When Brock said he was gonna use iron I was like oh that’s gonna bend.
I didn't help that he put a diamond shaped hole in the middle of the blades length either. That's exactly where it bent.
There’s a reason why most swords are made of steel and not pure iron. Having said that, I’m pretty surprised at how well it held up in the tests
For iron, it did very good.
He used high carbon steel for the edge, so it shouldn’t have bent that much assuming good heat treatment. Unfortunately, that was the problem.
